Sometimes you find the gems, and sometimes they seek you out. This one plopped through the mailbox with a note saying it reminded someone of Talk Talk--at least, that was what they thought. They were wrong; it's much better than that. If you can imagine Nick Drake arranged by The Blue Nile, you'll have a pretty good idea where Duncan's coming from. And while that may not be the most cheerful place in the world--the overwhelming shade of the album seems to be blue--it produces some lovely songs. Sheik has one of those husky, whispery voices that makes emotions almost transparent, and the spare arrangements that frame it are like windows. Sounds airy, I know, but it's true. And since his songs happen to be damn good, the view, thought bleak, is one you can't take your eyes from. While there may never be a new Nick Drake, in Duncan Sheik there might just be a worthy heir. --Chris Nickson

Who would have thought that Duncan Sheik would succeed where Paul Simon and Randy Newman failed, successfully transitioning from the pop-rock world to the Broadway stage? With Spring Awakening, Sheik and book writer/lyricist Steven Slater (who had already worked on Sheik's 2001 album Phantom Moon) have created a thoroughly exciting show that incorporates a contemporary art-indie idiom (including a small rock band instead of an orchestra) into a dramatic musical-theater context. The unlikely setting is that of a Frank Wedekind adaptation, but as it turns out, teenage angst is perennial, whether it's in contemporary America or in a 1891 German boarding school. Songs such as "The Bitch of Living" ("with nothing going on, asking just what went wrong"), "The Word of Your Body," "I Don't Do Sadness," and "Totally Fucked" ("You're fucked if you speak your mind and you know you will") resonate with the rage, frustration, confusion, excitement, joy, anger, and of course budding lust of those hormone-driven years. The show is greatly enhanced by its youthful cast members (they're all pretty close in age to their characters), who sing their hearts out. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Decca Broadway presents the cast recording for the acclaimed new Broadway production, SPRING AWAKENING. Written by pop music composer Duncan Sheik and playwright/lyricist Steven Sater, the musical explores emotional earthquakes in the lives of teenagers.

SPRING AWAKENING is based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 drama, which was scandalous in its day for addressing sex violence and suicide. The story, dialogue and costumes suggest the 19th Century, and are perfectly wedded to a beautiful alternative pop music score by Grammy® nominated singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik. The creative team also includes Tony® Award Winning director Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and legendary choreographer Bill T. Jones.

2 out of 5 stars What's all the hype?????.......2007-07-23

This one totally escaped me...I can't believe it won so many Tony Awards. Most of the music sounds the same ...without a real melody to be found. A Rent wannabe that falls way short.

1 out of 5 stars Spring Awakennings? I don't think so!!!.......2007-07-23

Having seen the musical of Spring Awakennings at the beginning of this year I would strongly reconsider purchasing this broadway cast recording. I am a theatre goer (at the age of 29) and have seen the majority of the lastest musicals for example, Grey Gardens, and The Pirate Queen. Anyway I was discusted with the musical of Spring Awakennings; why is it cool to show a couple simulating sex and watching a ploke pretending to toss off? constant swearing etc... - How sick is that!!!!... and you call this a musical worthy of nominations (of the year awards)! What is the world coming to! and what drugs are these so called critics taking?

In my opinion buy something else with your money such as 'The Pirate Queen' which has no longer showing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best musical soundtracks ever!.......2007-07-22

My favorite tracks are "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind", "The Song of Purple Summer", "The Dark I Know Well", "My Junk" and "Totally F*ucked".

3 out of 5 stars Buy it on itunes.......2007-07-21

This is a great CD and i listen to it all the time but i would not recommend buying this on amazon cause I bought this on itunes and it was only $9.99 and you dont have to even pay for shipping so buying it here is just a waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Tantalizing taste .......2007-07-20

The jacket notes explain the writing group's angle on musicals: People don't spontaneously break into song and revert to speech. New option: Rock music for internal dialogues (prevalent part of teen life). Awesome. If only it was the complete show.

4 out of 5 stars Great for casual Duncan fans.......2006-11-06

(4 & 1/2 stars) This is an excellent collection of songs for people who have an interest in the music of this talented and unfairly neglected singer-songwriter. It has Duncan's one chart hit, "Barely Breathing," as well as several other tunes that should have been hits ("Genius," for instance). With two discs, it is a very comprehensive overview of the man's work. The title's homage to Nick Drake has already been mentioned in another review. Of course Mr. Sheik previously did an entire CD of Drake-inspired music, Phantom Moon, derived from Drake's Pink Moon. (Sheik and pal Spooky Ghost also did a series of shows in NYC where they covered the entire Pink Moon album.) For the more dedicated Duncan-heads, this collection does have a few rare or unreleased tracks, including a nice cover of Joni Mitchell's song "Court & Spark," but it's more valuable for getting so many great tunes all in one place. There will be the inevitable quibbles about songs that could have been included but weren't (I can think of a couple myself), but that's always true with any collection like this.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this anthology and make yo'self a Duncan Freak.......2006-11-06

This anthology is fantastic. I had been wondering what Duncan Sheik album to get recently, and I was in a local music store, and I saw "Brighter Later" on the new release list. I was curious, because "Bryter Layter" is my favorite Nick Drake album, and when I looked it up, lo' and behold, I saw it was just what I had been looking for. I picked it up, because well, I had heard "Barely Breathing" on the radio at work and had been wanting a Sheik fix since. This really fit the bill.

Disc 1: Brighter, has the instantly recognizable song "Barely Breathing" and pretty well known "She Runs Away." This disc is lighter, and is great for driving. The opening song "That says it all" is a great piece and fun to listen to, catching the musician names and song nods within. The Joni Mitchell cover "Court and Spark" is fantastic as well, and never having heard it, "Lost on the Moon" was a nice surprise for me. There are good songs to bring the mood up here, "Genius" "Bite Your Tongue" and "On a High." I wonder why these didn't get airplay, they are fantastic.

Disc 2: Later is "darker" and more "moody." I use those words, yet, not as a turn off. It's just quieter and more acoustic music. This disc is great for fans of acoustic music and the song writing is just as solid as what appears on disc 1. "Memento" is a great opener, the styles are so different. The electric backing as it turns into strings, then they both merge and the end result is great. The rest of the disc is good, "For You" being my next favorite. Disc 2 is good for a change in mood, but I just really happen to be a bigger fan of the pop and radio friendly "Barely Breathing" Mr. Sheik.

This collection is great and shouldn't be missed.

3 out of 5 stars Peaks & valleys............2007-01-18

I bought this album off the strength of "Barely Breathing" and "She Runs Away", and was neither surprised nor disappointed after giving it a listen. There is a sad and dark theme throughout, although at times Sheik struggles to maintain it. The album starts off strong with the hits mentioned above, begins to trails off (thanks to some uninspired lyrics and a somewhat redundant sound that starts wearing thin), and then returns to full strength at the end. "The End of Outside" is slightly more up-tempo song featuring a catchy hook, and "Little Hands" is a darker, acoustic song that helps end the record on a positive yet sinister note. Fans of Sheik's radio hits should feel right at home with this one, although don't be surprised if you find yourself reaching for the Forward button during the middle tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A keen ear for the subject.......2006-08-12

Some artists dazzle with virtuosity, impress with cleverness, or overwhelm you with profundity. Duncan Sheik's eponymous album does none of these. He has the knack of catching a certain situation or mood, and playing it back to us perfectly. In the chorus to 'Barely Breathing,' he captures that moment of tension between heart and mind, between the ability to discern the probably unhappy outcome and the inability to act on it, with the perfect timing of the last line: "...I could stand here waiting, a fool for another day - I don't suppose it's worth the price, the price I'd have to pay...but I'm thinking it over, anyway." He gently airs the despair and frustration of cleaning up someone else's mess in "Absence of Sun." It's not an upbeat album; if you're in the dumps, it won't pick you up, but it might reassure you that someone gets it.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the mantle of Jackson Browne..........2006-08-07

Duncan Sheik is one of those artists from the 90s that makes this reviewer from the 70s believe in the return of the singer songwriter. His melodies are sweet and provacative, insightful and heart-wrenching. The production is good on the album, and it's something that's both good driving music and yet not too driving in its bass line for the office. Check him out if you're 49 or 29-I think you'll like him...

5 out of 5 stars Deceptively Simple.......2006-02-24

Sweet gentility offered in sorrowful loping of songs. Without any particular structure to his songs except a repeated slow-burn effect in his arrangement, if you simply enjoy a man with his guitar, and sparse string arrangement with piano, you should find this album endearing. The debut album of Duncan Sheik offers a range of genre driven interests.

His title tracks 'Drowning in Your Eyes' and 'Barely Breathing' are obviously intended to engage the wider audience who enjoy soft-rock structure and mildly generic if beautifully sung romantic lyrics, they are the pop songs of the album.

But Duncan quickly recants this direction with `Reasons for Living' which offers enveloping, gentle and gorgeous lyrics which builds slowly with electronic influences in the background. Followed up by `Days Go By' which is a string piece with native/tribal drums, structured beautifully, it is an outstanding acoustic piece, which unfortunately really is only hindered by a synthesized production.

November, Home and Little Hands are directed mainly at the folk/guitar lover, with simple and intricate guitar picking giving a lullaby effect, Duncan shows his ability as a guitarist, not, with technical skill, but with appreciation of the smaller melodies that drive songs, obviously the end tracks of the album were placed there because quite simply these songs were never going to attract a big audience, but most notably these are the tracks which seem to grow on people the more they listen, and become personal favourites.

Don't be put off by the reviewer who disliked this album on the pretence of appreciating `good' music, which this in their eyes apparently isn't, they unfortunately undercut themselves by showing their values, this, is indeed, music you could play to a wide demographic without offending any of them, it is no where near the indie/hipster scene, it does not represent the `classic' artists which are again terribly trendy to know in the right crowds, but not so trendy as say the Postal Service which comes from good indie roots and are now being renounced for selling out... the fiends... ahem... if you are looking for a musical identity to impress or hold over others with, Duncan Sheik will not help you, his music is soft, beautiful, utterly unpopular, and ultimately, only for people who listen to music because they enjoy it, with no other ulterior motives.

2 out of 5 stars Monument to Mediocrity.......2006-01-31

I was recommended this album by a friend who listens to him feverishly. I'll be honest with you, this simply is not good music. The lyrics are extremely bland and teetering on level of outright childish. This faux poetry seems to be taken right out of the narration of a bargain bin supermarket romance novel.

"I only taste the saline when I kiss away your tears
You really had me going, wishing on a star
But the black holes that surround you are heavier by far"

From "Barely Breathing", its most popular track, is a prime example of this artists' arrested state of development. I tried to get this friend to open her eyes, but it just wouldn't work. This isn't about "My music is better than your music", whereby most of the music I listen to know was recommended by other friends. The fact with Duncan Sheik is that he produces very mediocre music. Usually I don't poke fun of voices, but this guy has no quality. His voice is flat, almost to the point of whiney. I don't like the way the lead singer of Coheed&Cambria sings, but I'll at least give him props for uniqueness. Duncan Sheik, however, is nothing to marvel at.

I'm not terribly selective about my music either so it's not a blatant attack on Duncan Sheik as if it's something personal; I just desire an artist to have fresh and intricate lyrics, as well as good melodies. This, in turn, opens doors to a wide range of artists such as Yo La Tengo, The Smiths, Mos Def, Muddy Waters, and the The Clash. This, I believe, includes genres ranging from the soft "chill" type music (Yo La Tengo) to hip-hop (Mos Def).

If you like "soft rock" only, which I suppose Duncan Sheik represents, there's much better music out there representing that specific genre. I mentioned before Yo La Tengo, but maybe even the The Dears, The 6ths, or even the overrated Postal Service. These bands offer a much better introduction to the genre.

If you're looking for witty and deep lyrics as one reviewer proclaimed Duncan Sheik to possess, seek rather The Smiths. The Smith's usually cheerful melodies are incredible, only to be combined with comical yet morbid lyrics, which together is something not to be ignored. With Duncan, you get these elementary fantastical lyrics backed with rather boorish tunes.

This is the type of music you'd play a party with a wide range of demographics, the company of such people like grandma, new neighbors, workers get together . . .etc. The reason being is that it's not offensive; the lyrics are not intellectually stimulating, and the beats tamed. Even Nun sister Ann wouldn't take offense to Duncan Sheik. This is what appears to be the downfall of Duncan sheik: We've heard it all before. On another note, because of its unoriginal tame sounds and lyrics, a mass audience will accept Duncan Sheik's work. Like Ron Howard is for the massive mutli-megaplex suburban movie going horde, Duncan Sheik is for those very same people's stereos. I believe Duncan can do much better, I think he just sacrafices his artistic talent for the masses just like Ron Howard. I'm not saying Duncan reaches that level of mass publicity, but if marketed enough, it could certaintly reach that level. I'm just giving you an idea here of the persona surrounding this kind of music, just listen to the sample tracks on Amazon.

If you like childish elementary style lyrics with cheesy romantic qualities, backed with "huddle around the lone guitarist in the frat/dorm room" guitars, then by all means, Duncan Sheik is for you. This is simply boring music for boring people, or people that hasn't heard good music before.

To end my review, I'll alter a quote from the novel Catch-22.

"Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Duncan Sheik it had been all three."

Album Description

A poetic lyricist, accomplished multi-instrumentalist, expressive vocalist, charasmatic performer, and Broadway composter, Sheik honed his sophisticated interplay of melody and mood over the course of his career. This collection of his finest tracks--Sheik's first ever single-CD retrospective--is an essential overview of his inspired work.

All his great songs on one album. An essential collection for any Duncan Sheik fan or the perfect first album for anyone not familiar with his work. His first self titled album is his best but this album captures that album in addition to the standout tracks from all his others. I have all his works and still purchased this one, which is played and enjoyed the most.

Adapted from the novel/screenplay of Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Cunningham (The Hours), Colin Farrell gives an inspired performance as a tragedy-stricken youth whose search for identity and happiness forms the core of its unconventional friendship and romance. Its warm, admirably eclectic song-based soundtrack echoes the film's two decade arc with selections that span both era and emotion, from the innocence of Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'" and Yaz' infectious "Only You" to the angst-ridden classic rock-era bookends of "Somebody to Love" by the Jefferson Airplane and Patty Smith's epochal "Because the Night." The score's classical selections continue that thread with excerpts from Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte and contemporary minimalist Steve Reich's vibrant Music for Eighteen Musicians. But it's the half-dozen warm, introspective new tracks from Duncan Sheik that form the soundtrack's evocative emotional core, with melancholic, production-rich standouts like "Something Somewhere" infusing it with a smart, contemporary atmosphere in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

With score composed by famed singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik, A Home At The End Of The World also features songs from the '60s and '70s through the '80s, including tracks by Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, The Band, Yaz, Patti Smith, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro and more. Sheik's emotional score captures the essence of the characters' journeys through their lives and the relationships they develop along the way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ok that's it !!!.......2007-04-28

GET OVER IT!!! the Laura Nyro songs aren't on there, it's not the end of the world, no pun intended. Plus the fact I hardly think that the 5 minute scene, if it's even that long, that features "Gonna take a miracle", and "Desiree", MADE THIS MOVIE THAT "EMOTIONALLY RESONANT". Duncan Sheik's scoring and 2 new songs are extremely moving, these songs are peppered throughout the WHOLE picture. This means the WHOLE movie, which is what they were recorded and used for, not for one freakin' scene. For the fans of the actual MOVIE, this is a must have. For the fans of Laura Nyro, don't buy it then! THE END.

4 out of 5 stars CUSTOM HOME.......2007-04-23

The previous review couldn't be more correct, Laura Nyro's "Desiree"
and "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" should be on the soundtrack [a contractual problem, no doubt] Do what I did and download the
songs on itunes for 99 cents each. While you're at it, download
Yaz's early 80's electronic gem, "Only You" too [background music
when Jonathan was cruising the village] I also resequinced the songs
in order that they appeared in the film. Problem solved!

5 out of 5 stars a great buy.......2006-10-24

If you are a fan of Duncan Sheik, this is a must buy. Fantastic music all around, but especially from Sheik.

I loved all the pieces on this soundtrack and I definitely rec this.

3 out of 5 stars Where is Laura Nyro?.......2006-08-11

Laura's music gave the film so much in the way of soul, hard to believe it's missing here. Hmmm...anyway, I'd still recommend the film and soundtrack!

4 out of 5 stars COMPELLING.......2005-07-28

With its flavorful mix of new and original music (but sadly lacking the poignant Laura Nyro songs that made the movie so emotionally resonant), this disc is absolutely worth listening to -- and it has a power all its own. Recalling the sweetly, deceptively simple movie, it has a folky, sublime, melancholy quality.

Originally written off as a nonthreatening rejoinder to Jeff Buckley, Duncan Sheik has quietly redeemed himself since his self-titled 1996 debut. Trading in the airy detachment of previous releases for a more immediate sound, the New York singer-songwriter's fourth album fizzes with electronics, distortion, and a newfound pop sensibility. Producer Patrick Leonard (Madonna, Jewel, Elton John) keeps things bright and breezy, forcefully shaking Sheik's predisposition for Nick Drake-style moodiness on wonderfully optimistic numbers like "On a High" and "Start Again." But the most surprising twist comes from "On Her Mind," cowritten with Mick Jones of Foreigner, a track that fully dramatizes Sheik's desire to breathe new life into his folk-rock roots. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc.......2005-12-31

It took me a little while to warm up to this one, but it is great. I have noticed, almost as a rule, that whenever I play this CD often, I find myself more creative and inspired. The lyrics speak of very real subject matter, and the collective power of the CD builds up to an awe-inspiring climax with the final song. I thought blasts of energy like this wee only possible in the live arena. Duncan Sheik seems to have a tendency to break the rules of what I think the limits of pop music should be. And that's a welcome releif.

4 out of 5 stars a pleasant surprise..........2005-10-14

Duncan's most recent cd is a nice blend of his previous, airy mood music, and ambient melodies. But here also is an introduction to more of a pop sound, and procession of a fun beat. Duncan remains a good storyteller, and gets thru the songs in his typical fashion.

Hi lites here include the reflective and somewhat sarcastic "Genius." There's a new bit of attitude to his music brought in with track 3, "Start Again." Track 5 includes some of his best vocals, ranging from deep bass to incredible falsetto. On A High, track 6, would have to be the most radio friendly tune on the cd, and is quite fun. Another "story" is told in "Magazines," and this song is superbly drawn out, and may be the best on the album. Track 9, you begin to sense a bit of political satire with "Good Morning."

The other tracks are nothing special, but hold up alright to the rest of the cd. A very nice surprise, and glad I gave it a chance!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2005-03-04

I will admit that I lost interest in Duncan after his first release and did not pick up another of his albums until Daylight. WOW, I'm glad I happened upon his music again. Other reviewers have characterized this album as pop-oriented and dumbed-down to appeal to a wider audience. I'm not sure I agree. But, if that is true, then I must be part of that wider audience. I love it!! I think of Daylight as being an album full of tracks which have the same appeal as did the track, Barely Breathing. It is upbeat, but mature, and maintains a fantastic "groove" throughout. I really enjoy the flow of the album from one track to the next. If that makes me a part of the mindless masses - so be it. I still love the album!

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected.......2005-02-26

It seems pretty clear, after years of trying to obtain some level of success, Sheik, although still not unfettered by his pursuit of "gold" has at least extended himself enough to get out of a rut of self-obesession. Although a lot of the sound is largely "pop", it has a clever and diverse side to it which, unlike a lot of his other albums, makes it interesting enough to listen to without straining to keep yourself from pushing the "next song" or "eject" button. I have this feeling that if he didn't try SO hard, and just let his creative juices flow a little more easily, he might actually get what he wants...

3 out of 5 stars Good three songs, the rest sounds all the same to me.......2004-11-26

So i heard about all the reviews aplauding Sheik, and I decided to give him a try. I loved Genius, Half Life, and Good Morning, but I didn't think the rest of the songs were too good, there was no distinct melody line, and the songs aren't something you can constantly sing too. It's good for sleeping though, so turn it on when you wanna relax.

"Barely Breathing," the hit single from Duncan Sheik's 1996 debut, remained on the charts for a record-breaking 55-week spell, but his follow-up album is far from being the sequel to those tortured love songs. This time Sheik visits his art-rock influences with an honesty far more brutal than emotional. With the studio as his playground, he toys with layers of strings, meticulous arrangements, and that familiar, almost haunting voice to create songs--like "Nothing Special" and "Bite Your Tongue"--that say as much about Sheik's own backlash against his romantic image as the larger social issues he's addressing. Humming, laced as it is with anger, is refreshing in its bite. It's not an easy first listen, but that's the whole point. --Rebecca Wallwork

3 out of 5 stars Thoughtful lyricism and Introspective Sophmore Release.......2005-04-15

I've listen to duncan sheik ever since i was in highschool. That has been a good 8 or 9 years since i first listened to Duncan Sheik Self Titled. I've always believed this album wasn't the best Duncan Sheik album. In fact i believe it is the worst up to Phantom Moon. Don't get me wrong this album is a must have for any Duncan Sheik fan i could not live without some of these songs in my record collection. The album starts out with a few seemingly superficial lyrics in songs like In Between, Rubbed Out, and Bite Your Tongue(Only hit off of this album). Duncan Sheik is a clever song writer but sometimes i feel he is over the top on how he says things. This album that aspect is really obvious and is style is immature compared to that of his first release. Alibi is the first song that really touches all aspects of what i believe is good in Mr. Sheik. Varying Degrees of Con-Artistry, That Says It All, & Everyone Everywhere are good songs as well. I don't particularly care for songs where a song writer name drops he does it all in one verse in that says it all, this however used to be one of my favorites. Everyone Everywhere is an inspiring spiritual ballad. A Body Goes Down is one of my three favorites on this album one of those "i can't live without duncan songs." Nothing Special is a pop tune that i liked right off when i heard this album in which the singer calls himself out in the end. This makes it ackward but uniquely duncan. everytime i listen to this album i think to myself "don't say it" and he does "I Am the snake that bites his own tail" he doesn't something like this in Daylight when he says the F word i just roll my eyes. The Real Gem in this album i believe is House Full of Riches. Powerful introspective love song not about the object of his affection but of himself. Nichiren is a great too. and there is a special hidden track that i won't ruin for you. ;) This is a must have for any duncan sheik fan but definately not a first album for a prospective fan. Get Phantom Moon or Duncan Sheik-Self Titled, or if you're more into a pop'py' music get Duncan Shiek Daylight

5 out of 5 stars Sheik offers sweet, smooth moods.......2004-09-26

I loved Sheik's debut album. There's something comforting about his watery voice. On his first album, he knocked me out with Barely Breathing and the enchanting She Runs Away, but Sheik offers something different on Humming. I consider this album one of my classics. Sheik paints a drury portrait of life just out of the sun's warm reach. It's a step just outside the realm of peaceful optimism that sends the listener into a state of thoughtful self-reflection. Sheik's voice is sweeping, biting and occasionally sardonic in its tone and scope, and I never get sick of hearing it. It's just so surreal to listen to someone I can relate so easily to. I actually enjoy the simplicity of Sheik's vague philosophizing. Besides, to a certain extent, isn't that what we all do, all day?

Favorites of mine here are In Between; That Says It All; Everyone, Everywhere; Nothing Special; and House Full of Riches. Regardless, Humming is a load, play, and eject piece of art... there's never a reason to skip around. Beautiful.

1 out of 5 stars this is a bad record.......2004-08-29

the vocals need a lot of work, i was let down...

5 out of 5 stars The magic continues.......2003-09-27

While not as immediatley popular as Duncan Sheik was, this album has a much more interesting musical style. With a perfect mix of pop and slow songs, Humming is a joy to listen to. Standouts include "Nothing Special" about the shallowness of the music business, and "Bite Your Tongue" about the "well, it's not my fault" mentality.

I definetly recommend this CD to anyone who has ever heard a song by Duncan Sheik.

5 out of 5 stars An album like no other..........2003-06-23

I didn't get this album at first...I listened, but nothing really happened. After more and more listens, however, I started to really understand it a lot more. Though I am not explaining it well, and though I am not going to go song-by-song and tell you what's good and what's not, I truly believe this is the greatest album of all time. Tracks like Rubbed Out, That Says It All, and Foreshadowing are the most incredibly amazing songs ever written and I am grateful to Duncan for letting the world hear them! ~~ Joe ~~ ...

Album Description

Duncan Sheik became a household name with his very first single, the smash hit "Barely Breathing" from his Grammy®-nominated gold-selling debut album. But his mainstream success may belie the depth of his work; he has scored for film and the stage, produced ambitious records for other artists, and captured audiences around the world with his remarkable voice and songcraft. 'White Limousine' is Sheik's most realized work yet - a set of catchy, thoughtful compositions that are pro-love and anti-war, both perfectly simple and breathtakingly vast. Included in the 'White Limousine' package are two discs, labeled MINE and YOURS. MINE is Duncan's version of these songs; YOURS is a DVD-ROM enabling listeners to create their own versions. Using the software provided, the listener can isolate and remix 'White Limousine''s many sonic layers. This may be the first time a recording artist has released the entire contents of his or her album, instrument by instrument, giving listeners the ability to re-imagine the songs as they see fit.

4 out of 5 stars A Highly Underrated Artist.......2007-05-30

Duncan Sheik has proven once again that he is a master when it comes to writing sensationally melodic and beautiful songs. White Limousine is much more relaxed and less catchy than Daylight, so initially I was a little disappointed upon giving the album a first listen. For the most part, the songs are slower, highly orchestrated (which isn't too much of a change from his usual style), and filled with haunting/soothing vocals.

Now I've come to love the album and appreciate it for it's "chill" feeling. If you want to hear an amazing album to which you can just "kick back" and relax, please purchase this one.

5 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT!.......2007-03-28

Definitely Hymn is one of the best songs of this album. White Limousine contains rich lyrics full of messages. The variety of instruments remember me Phantom Moon even I donñt believe in ghostos could be labeled as a Phantom Moon b-side. Duncan's voice has improved too, he shows another perspective describing social situaciones but in the deep, we find feelings coming from inside claiming for compasion, love and understanding, yes nature and love!.

4 out of 5 stars White Limousine A Fun Drive.......2007-01-10

Mellow sounds grace the latest release from Duncan Sheik, with soulful lyrics and subdued grooves. Two favorites of mine so far have been "Hey, Casanova" and the title track, "White Limousine".
Also, if you have musical inclinations of your own, you'll enjoy the second disk in the set, which contains full bandwidth .WAV files of the different tracks on the album, which you can load into your favorite music application to remix as you feel inspired!

5 out of 5 stars mr. sheik is back.......2006-10-13

I was so excited when duncans self titled album came out. Finally a man that was writing and making beautiful rich music. Barely breathing was my least fav on that record, but the rest were true blue. That album followed with just mediocre ones but satisfied my "duncan craving" year by by year. Until white limousine came out. He is finally back to his early days creating quiet delicate ballads, with a full piece orchestra in the background. What am i waiting from duncan next? A heart breaking duet with dido. Ahh, pure pleasure.

2 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2006-07-05

I mean no disrespect, but why do I feel like everytime I
listen to a new Duncan Sheik record, I'm either going to
a funeral or coming away from someone's wake. And even
though the music is melodically interesting, the lyrics
take too long to get into. I feel I cannot to what he's
singing about.

Still remembered primarily for the catchy, but ultimately forgettable single "Barely Breathing" off his self-titled debut record, Duncan Sheik's Phantom Moon continues down the same, increasingly melancholic road he began to chart in earnest on his 1998 sophomore effort, Humming. Here, Sheik slows everything down and wrings bittersweet romance from these songs, which feature lyrics written by New York playwright Steven Sater. Embellished with pianos, strings, and occasional, understated drum work, the music Sheik puts around Sater's poetic stories is moody but not acutely passionate. While his expression is heartfelt, it always feels like he's just passing through these sentiments. Songs like "Mouth on Fire," while lovely and sonically intriguing, never attain those touches of intense individuality that mark the best troubadours. Nevertheless, Moon is a solid effort, and it shows off Sheik's growing musical prowess and confidence. Perhaps he simply needs life to throw him a few more low balls before his work finds the sad, brilliant heart it, for now, only alludes to. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars I don't know who I'm kidding, imagining you'll care, but...........2006-02-17

This is not actually a review of "Phantom Moon", but a mini-rant in the defense of Duncan Sheik's some-years-ago hit "Barely Breathing", which is described by the reviewer up top as "catchy but ultimately forgettable."

I realize that Amazon is not a forum for readers to argue with each other, but I just can't let that one pass.

There is no sense in dismissing "Barely Breathing" just because it is popular, any more than there is sense in overvalueing Sheik's successive work because it is not. While it certainly does not hold that "good" music will always succeed while "bad" music will always submerge into obscurity (actually I often think the opposite is true), in this case the song hit because it really was good. In other words, it has resonance because it resonated. That is why I still hear it on the radio, and rightly so.

One of my favorite writers, George Orwell, wrote that the best books tell you what you already know. What he really meant, of course, was that the best books tell you what you already felt, but were unable to bring into words yourself. The same goes for songs and song lyrics. Think about it:

I know what you're doing
I see it all to clear
I only taste the same when i kiss away your tears
You really had me going wishing on a star
But the black holes that surrounded you are heavier by far
I believed in your confusion you were so completely torn
It must've been that yesterday was the day that i was born
There's not much to examine there's nothing left to hide
You really can't be serious you hafta ask me why
I say goodbye...?
Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
Don't know who I'm kidding
Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
A fool for another day
I don't suppose it's worth the price worth the price
The price that I would pay
(But I'm thinking it over anyway)

Everyone keeps asking what's it all about?
I used to be so certain and I can't figure out
What is this attraction? I only feel the pain
There's nothing left to reason and only you to blame
Will it ever change?

Is there person alive that hasn't experienced this for themselves in their own love life? I sure as hell have. And obviously Sheik has too: what make it special is way he communicates that common experience. He knows he's a fool; he knows he should leave; it's ridiculous to pay such a price; yet he is "thinking it over, anyway." And after all this, "I've come to find/I may never know/your changing mind/is it friend or foe?/I rise above/or sink below/every time/you come and go/please don't come and go." Again, he expresses the thought we all have from time to time, that the person we're sharing our bed with is in the end a complete stranger to us; and that the power we voluntarily give to those we love can be used for pain as much as pleasure.

And that, my fellow fans, is not "forgettable."

Here endeth the rant.

5 out of 5 stars Phantom Moon Soars.......2004-07-27

This is without a doubt the most emotionally affecting new pop album I've heard in many years. Sheik's songwriting has established a new benchmark, and his soulful singing of Sater's exquisite lyrics make for a true classic. Unlike anything else out there. It restores your faith in the power of songwriting, and leaves you with a bigger feeling of your own heart.

5 out of 5 stars A rare album that can touch spiritually/emotionally.......2004-02-25

A powerful collaberative work.
The sculptures of the arrangements are worth many a listen alone. Incredible use of various instruments, voicings and layers of orchestral sound. Great open tuning guitar work and feeling.Duncans vocals are so powerful on Simeon...the song brought me to my knees. Whatever you did my friend I hope you can stay with it and be an integral part of more music with this type of depth, power and soul..

5 out of 5 stars a balance of beauty and melancholy.......2003-11-29

If what you enjoy about Sheik's music is the comfortable balance he strikes between beauty and sadness, then you will enjoy this album. I own all of his CDs, and this is the one I pick out to play on days when I feel like listening to something melancholic and even-tempered. The mood is reminiscent of Nick Drake's "Pink Moon", yet is purely Duncan Sheik in its somber yet soothing tone. I found a sound artistic partnership in this collaborative effort, with Sheik's music complimenting the simplicity and fragility of Sater's words. This album is a must-have for hardcore fans, but the more casual Sheik listener might first try picking up something that runs a wider gamut when in comes to tempo and mood, like "Humming" or "Daylight"

5 out of 5 stars Wow! So Profoundly Original it is shocking!.......2002-07-17

Spent some time listening and really falling in love with Sheik's first release recently-then went out and grabbed this cd. As good as the first cd is, Phantom Moon is one of the most wonderful creative and unique cd's I have heard in years. Sheik can get you into a rythym and change the entire direction of the music so subtly that you don't even notice. What a beautiful creation this is-now I have to run out a grab Humming....PS he also has a great website....

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful sentiment and wonderful music.......2006-05-19

It's hard to say anything but, everything here is wonderful. The performer (excellent), the lyrics, and the music. This CD gets listened to time after time--the songs are sublime.

Having said that: the music is not always of the "hummable" type, if that is what you are after--there is a modicum of edgy dissonance, at times. And the subject matter is adult (although lyrics are almost never explicit--I can think of only one double entendre)--the personal reflections, often relating to sex, of a gay man. But many, of both genders, single and coupled, and of all sexual orientations, likely will find resonance with the music, or otherwise will find the inner personal reflections of another human being of interest.

With that caveat, highly recommended, at 4-1/2 stars. I think that many will be pleasantly surprised by this gem.

I saw this show at the NYTW, and never dreamed that they would record it- but they did! And the recording is lovely. Michael Winther has such a fabulous voice- so smooth and expressive.
