Editorial Reviews

Though it may not have been clear at the time, Chicago's fifth album marked something of a turning point for the most successful American rock act of the 1970s. V was not only the band's first single-disc release, but, incredibly, its 11th LP worth of music in just three years. That Herculean workload may have watered down their previous studio album (III), but it also seemed to teach them a few important lessons as well. Here they manage not only one of their biggest hits (the joyous "Saturday in the Park"), but a stubborn, focused retrenchment of their most adventurous musical instincts in the bargain. That notion is clear from the intentionally ironic opening of "A Hit by Varese," through cuts like "While the City Sleeps," "State of the Union," and the autobiographical "Alma Mater," which bristle with the band's jazzy instincts and avant-garde influences. Even the album's other Top 30 hit, "Dialogue (Part I & II)," remains one of its more unusual chart entries. This digitally remastered new edition contains three bonus tracks (a Terry Kath noise-guitar-powered, previously unreleased studio take of "A Song for Richard and His Friends," the gritty outtake "Mississippi Delta City Blues," and the original single edit of "Dialogue") as well as Don Heckman's new liner notes, which feature insightful comments from several band members. --Jerry McCulley

I actually asked for this set as a Christmas gift & enjoyed it so much that I ordered the same CD's for a good friend of mine.
The collection of songs is outstanding and makes road trips or just an afternoon of kicking back an absolute blast.

Unlike many men, Alligator Records never forgets an anniversary. "The country's largest contemporary blues label," as it rightly bills itself, has released multidisc compilations celebrating its 20th, 25th, 30th, and now 35th years. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, only tracks recorded for an artist's first Alligator disc are chosen for this chronologically presented summary of music that stretches from Hound Dog Taylor's electrifying 1971 label debut to Mavis Staples's in 2004. Although the imprint made a tentative stab at reggae in the mid '80s, its roster generally upholds the "genuine houserocking music" credo Alligator has boasted as a tagline since the early days. Whether reviving the careers of blues rockers (Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, Lonnie Mack, Elvin Bishop) or ageing icons with plenty of gas left in their tanks (Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Katie Webster, Mavis Staples, James Cotton, Guitar Shorty) or finding new blood to carry on the traditions (Michael Burks, Corey Harris, Dave Hole, Tinsley Ellis, Shemekia Copeland), Alligator sets the standard for what an independent label can achieve. These 35 nuggets extracted from a catalog of 225 albums only begin to tell the label's story, but there's not a weak one in the lot. Founder Bruce Iglauer's intriguing and insightful liner notes for each act add depth to the tunes, making 35x35 a representative sampler that's also an exhilarating listening experience, and a fascinating overview of American roots music. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

35 X 35 is not just another best-of compilation. Alligator founder and president Bruce Iglauer and staff chose to spotlight songs from the Alligator debut release from each featured artist. From "She's Gone" (the very first track on the very first Alligator album, 1971's Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers) to the legendary Mavis Staples' chilling "A Dying Man's Plea," 35 X 35 is effectively a chronological history of Alligator, a story told in music highlighting every style of blues and roots music the company has released. From the searing hard blues of Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, Albert Collins, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy to harmonica-driven workouts from Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite and William Clarke to the Gulf Coast piano blues of Professor Longhair, Katie Webster and Marcia Ball to the acoustic music of Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women and Corey Harris, it is clear that Alligator Records has been, and will remain, at the forefront of modern blues music in all of its many shades. With personal notes on each track from Iglauer in the accompanying 40-page booklet, 35 X 35 is proof of the staunchly independent label's single-minded vision for all these years: to record nothing but deeply rooted "Genuine Houserockin' Music."

great retrospective. true blues - soulful, raw & edgy, fun, smooth, heartbreaking - it's all here. highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous bargain.......2007-02-26

You're paying about 35 cents a song for great contemporary blues performances. I don't think there's a better bargain on Amazon. Very guitar centric, some good harmonica solos too. Grab it if you like electric guitars playing blues.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine Soul Rockin' Music.......2006-09-07

Even though this package only compiles material from Alligator Records, you probably won't find a more fascinating tour through the history of the Blues over the last 35 years. Of course, Alligator has a knack for signing up the most interesting Blues maestros. This compilation shows the development of cutting-edge Blues over the namesake era, ever since Alligator's inaugural release with Hound Dog Taylor in 1971. During much of this era, the Blues was still progressing, before settling into the respectful revivalism of recent years. In the 70s, Alligator was at the forefront with new artists who added flavor to tried-and-true styles, like the sinister Son Seals or the groovy Lonnie Brooks. Also during that decade, Alligator brought several veteran masters back into prominence, with powerful new material by the likes of Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, and Professor Longhair (noteworthy for his authoritative New Orleans style). As this compilation rumbles along, we hear a surprising amount of experimentation and progression in the 1980s, as interesting new artists expanded the basic template of the Blues, including some great finds like Lil' Mo & the Blues Imperials and Little Charlie & the Nightcats. The songs here from the 90s and 00s show that even the genius artists at Alligator followed the trend in Blues to solidify the classic template, with technical chops becoming more important than innovation - notwithstanding intriguing gospel-inflected works from the Holmes Brothers and the queenly Mavis Staples. But thanks to the impeccable expertise and taste exercised by Alligator when signing masters both new and old, this compilation is a must for any fan or historian of modern Blues. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars A great range of great artists.......2006-06-02

This double-CD set has great artists, great selections from the artists, and a killer set of liner packaging. You get some choice information and showings by legendary cats as well as non-household names, with explanations as to why they were great (as if the music wasn't doing that job already). And at the price, you can't beat the value.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection for anyone.......2006-04-27

If you're just getting into contemporary blues or you've been listening for awhile, you're going to love this collection. Alligator has been one of the class acts of the indie labels for a long time and these discs give you an idea why they are so well thought of. 35 artists doing the first track from their first Alligator release. Marica Ball, Coco Montoya, Lonnie Mack, Johnny Winter, William Clarke and the list goes on with not a weak cut in the carload. These type of samplers are great if you're just getting into this type of music since you do get a wide selection of artists and styles. Alligator has released double disc anniversary sets in honor of yeas 20, 25, 30 and now, 35. They're all great to listen to, so grab one or all of them and have yourself a party with genuine houserocking music from people who know how to do it.

"Sounds nice," Bo Diddley tongue-in-cheekily observes of his music in "The Story of Bo Diddley," one of three self-named tunes on this 20-track examination of his classic '50s and '60s Checker Records sides. Not only was the former Ellas McDaniels rhythmically sharp enough to have a beat named after himself; he had a great guitar sound and a seemingly endless supply of shaggy-dog stories, lover-man boasts, silly jokes, and complaints with which to fuse them. His Best boils down the two-CD Chess Box, including signature pieces like "Bo Diddley" and "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" alongside unjustly obscure tunes such as "Pills" (later covered by the New York Dolls) and "Dearest Darling." Great. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Bo Diddley.......2007-07-19

This is a nice introduction to the work of Bo Diddley. The liner notes say: ". . .you can't judge a book by its cover, but you can sure tell something about how important a musician is by the artists who do cover versions of his songs." And a lot of musicians covered his songs or were influenced by his work.

Some of the songs on this album well exemplify his art:

"Bo Diddley": This eponymous work lays out the classic Bo. What a romp! The rhythm is infectious and his guitar work is solid. He shows off a nice blues and rock voice. This is, of course, classic Bo Diddley. And it is one of the great blues/rock songs of the ages.

"I'm a Man": The B side to "Bo Diddley" when 45s were the nature of the recording game. One of the best B sides of all time! Compare with Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy." Tough to choose between them! There is a wonderful basic instrumental tune with great blues vocals from Bo. Classic!

"Hey Bo Diddley": A nicely done variation on "Bo Diddley." Good rhythm.

Finally, "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover": There are nice lyrics here, with Bo playing nice variations off of the title. Well done indeed. The rhythm and guitar work is wonderful. The beat is infectious.

This is a wonderful introduction to the corpus of Bo Diddley, one of the major founding figures in rock and roll as well as a nice blues contributor.

5 out of 5 stars Bo Is The Real Boss! .......2007-04-15

Bo is to rock and roll, what Strauss is to the polka. Bo is to rock and roll, what Waylon is to country. Bo is to rock and roll, what BB is to the blues. Bo is without peer! The CD belongs in the library of everybody who has an ear for music. I'll bet you'll open it a second time!

5 out of 5 stars Immensely Influential.......2007-01-03

Few artists have ever had such an impact as Bo Diddley. He left his mark on all rock that followed. Bo's music really shows the evolution of blues into rock. He often gets tossed in oldies bins, but this stuff is timeless, and some of it has more bite than anything one would expect from the time; for example, the awesome "Pills" is one of rocks' first "drug songs" and one of the best rock songs ever written. So many of these songs have been covered by popular artists, and so many original compositions still owe a large debt to Bo Diddley's work. Diddley was a true pioneer, in fact, the originator of a beat so distinctive that musicians know it as the "Bo Diddley Beat." Bo Diddley is not just music for those wanting to learn about the roots of rock though, it is truly vital and irresistible. For those looking for a good place to start, this is essential Bo Diddley and essential music: PERIOD!

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2006-11-10

If you are in anyway interested in either Chicago/Mississippi blues or the roots of rock and roll this CD is a must have item.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-28

Bo-Didley's names says it all? Best collection of his music. I will recommend to anyone who is fan of people who have tried Bo's style like Stones, Eric Burden etc., to give a listen to this. An excellent investment for your music collection.

The unwritten rules for doo-wop groups were deceptively simple: name your group after a bird (the Wrens, the Flamingos) or a car (the Cadillacs, the El Dorados), practice your two-, three-, or four-part harmonies on a neighborhood street corner or in the back of a candy store, and sing songs about how much you love your baby. It might have seemed like an obvious formula, but getting it just right was never easy. When it worked, that formula created some of the most joyful and unforgettable music of the 20th century. From the Orioles ("It's Too Soon to Know") to Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("I Want You to Be My Girl"), this four-CD collection is without a doubt the definitive introduction to the rock & roll vocal music of the 1950s and early '60s. --Percy Keegan

5 out of 5 stars Doo Wop Box is a necessity for collectors and fans.......2007-03-26

Although the Doo Wop craze is before my generation, I've always had a fascination with the music and the stories behind the music. This collection satisfied my craving for both great music and wonderful stories about the artists and the era. If you are even a casual fan of this genre do yourself a favor and get this collection-I looked at several others and I'm so happy I went with this one.

5 out of 5 stars the original era of rock music.......2007-01-19

Can u imagine life as a teenager before 1953? having to listen to your parents music? THe andrews sisters? Yuck. These artists contributed not only to MUSIC but the state of world culture in an unimaginable way. They are certianly unsung heros that put way more on the line than white boys from England ever did.

the booklet alone is worth the price. i paid 60 dollars originally for this. One of 3 in a series. I have all 3, the only 3 box sets I own. I do a college rock radio show in LA and these gems are fun to squeeze into the show.

4 out of 5 stars Doo Wop.......2007-01-12

This was the best collection of music from 1948-1987. It brings back memories of the vocal groups we have maybe forgotten their names but the music we can remember. My favorite era for this music was 1955-57. All of us remember the strong emotions of some love we had at the time when we listen to Why Do Fools Fall in Love or Devil or Angel. I am so thankful that some company or group of people are preserving this music. I even listen to it with my grandchildren and they can sing some of the words a musical hertiage to pass on.

5 out of 5 stars Upgrade to old LP record.......2007-05-30

I have just upgraded my worn out record to a CD because this band still sounds good after over 30 years. Suggest those younger than 30 give it a try and hear how big band music really should sound.

4 out of 5 stars Marred brilliance.......2007-01-22

When Chicago V was released in 1972, the US was still at war in Vietnam, and Richard Nixon was nearing the end of his successful first term as president. But fatigue was gripping the nation and the band as well, which had been in the pop-musical spotlight for the better part of four years. Some of that fatigue is apparent on this, the first one-album release since the band's formation.

Listening to this album now is a different experience that it was when I was a high school sophomore. Then, I was more excited by the band's big hits like "All is Well" and "Saturday in the Park" (whose opening piano chords even I could play!) but less excited by jazz and experimental music. Now, I can measure the change in my musical tastes by my appreciation of the cuts that did not become hits. "A Hit by Varese" is (mostly) a classic piece of energetically-syncopated brilliance. "While the City Sleeps" has a phenomenal show of triple-tonguing brass technique and neatly expresses the 70s paranoia that "men are scheming new ways to kill us and tell us dirty lies." But something new has crept into the lyrics of several songs -- the disappointment that many Americans are still compacent about issues the band cares about. The disparity of reactions is expertly rendered in "Dialogue" in which Terry Kath and Peter Cetera play two faces of the American political divide. Kath, as the activist and anti-war voice, tries to goad Cetera into expressing upset over the continuing war and poverty. Cetera plays the happy college grad student oblivious to social ills, who only "hopes to study further...and...keep a steady high," presumably with illicit drugs. That Cetera wins over Kath (and that the song is seemingly shut off mid-riff) has the intended unsettling effect.

"Chicago V" has serious flaws, even in its hits. "All is Well" is a sweetly-harmonized and doleful look back at the painful end of a love affair. But the horn solo that Jim Pankow inserts into this graceful tune is mechanical and inappropriately edgy. And it doesn't take a PhD in musical theory to hear the opening bars of "Saturday in the Park" as flatfooted and unsophisticated. That the producer spared the red pencil on the badly-performed ad lib horn solos in the middle of "A Hit by Varese" is emblematic of the album's problems.

Anyway, enough griping. Even longtime Chicago fans like me who have outgrown their youthful infatuation with the band will find gems here. The brass solo in "Now That You've Gone" is as bright and breezy as any of the band's best. "Dialogue," heard in the context of a foreign war waged by an unpopular president, (sadly) resonates today with the same wicked insights as it did 35 years ago -- undoubtedly the reason Chicago still plays it in concert. "State of the Union" and "Goodbye" are solidly-constructed and listenable in spite of not being hit material.

Suggestion: don't buy the CD for the bonus tracks alone! "Song for Richard and his Friends" is an expressionistic anti-Nixon piece that attempts to satirize the administration's pomposity and overreach with extended improvised feedback guitar. Listen to "Free Form Guitar" on the band's first album for a better example of Terry Kath's guitar genius. "Mississippi Delta Blues" is evidently a first attempt at the piece, but Kath's tentative stabs at shaping the tune's melodies sound nothing like the wonderful result that eventually landed on the band's 11th album. And only the most devoted fan wants to hear any of the band's hits (the marvelous "Dialogue," in this instance) diced and sliced to fit the procrustean bed of AM radio's infamous 3-minute slot.

Nevertheless, "Chicago V" has terrific music that can be admired by fan and non-fan alike. Like them or not, Chicago was a terrific band whose combined talents occasionally crossed the line into musical sublimity. And for that, I am grateful and a still a fan.

3 out of 5 stars has a gem that you never hear on the compilations.......2006-09-05

I like this b/c it has "dialgoues I and II" which are my favorite Chicago songs. The rest of the album is all good but those songs stand out.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago's "Sgt. Pepper".......2006-06-11

In the summer of 1972, I had just finished 6th grade. Everywhere you went that summer, every party, every event, you could hear this album playing. My brother, who had just gotten his driver's license, had the 8-track of it, and played it non-stop. It was part of the soundtrack of the summer of '72, that short "feel-good" interlude between the anger of the 60s and Watergate. Counter-culture was going mainstream, gaining acceptance, and Chicago was at their craft writing the music.

It was when stoners and "bandzies" all loved Chicago at the same time, not to mention critics and the record-buying public.

Everything good about Chicago comes together on this album. Only they could protest while making us smile.

When "A Hit By Varese" opens with a Terry Kath Free Form into, you are about to hear The Original Seven at their creative and professional peak. Another reviewer said it best - this is hard, driving rock-jazz with a vengeance.

This timeless album deserves to be in every music-lover's collection. I love the Rhino reissue with extensive notes and bonus tracks.

I give it a 5-star because there are no 6-stars. There is not a better album by anybody, anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars While The City Sleeps.......2006-05-23

This was the last "good" CHicago album, before they pandered completely to top-40 tastes and drowned in sentimentality.

The lower brass is great here, especially in "Hit by Varese." This song challenges the band's followers to think about musical forms outside the "new norm" - just like Satie on BST's second album.

But, anyway, my favorite is "While the City Sleeps." I was working the midnight shift in a factory in Chicago at the time of this song's popularity, and it was exactly the same rhythm as a large hydraulic machine which ran all night long. Tis music, for such an unlikely reason, is part of the soundtrack of my own life growing up in Chicago.

But it was the last time the band tried to create and maintain a dialogue..."We can make it happen." We really let the boys down, I guess...but then I guess that they let us down, too.

This type of release from Alligator records, is good for two types of electric blues fans. The first type, is for the novice, just getting into electric blues. You can get an assortment of blues artists, with one small investment, and get to hear 12 "full" blues tunes. That's much better than hearing countless 30-second samplers. 30 seconds, at the start of an electric blues song, could just be some basic notes on a guitar, that may not even be, the actual beat and rhythm, that is the heart of the song. The second type, is for someone like Shaq, "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer". Good, new, electric blues, is very hard to find. And I spend, an enormous amount of time researching, new, and old electric blues. I bought this CD, with the same goal, that I bought, previous Alligator CD's of this genre. I felt, if I could find one artist, that I hadn't known about, or that I had heard about, but never got to hear much of, the ridiculously low purchase price was well spent. It's from CD's like this, that I "discovered", Luther Allison, Dave Hole, and Koko Taylor, among others. This CD, has a great song from Luther Allison (Will It Ever Change). A great one, from one of my six all-time favorite electric blues guitarist's, Albert Collins, (Get To Getting). It has one of the rockiness' songs, I've ever heard from Little Charlie & The Nightcats, (You Got Your Hooks In Me), it includes, a great Lonnie Brooks cut, (You Know What My Body Needs (Live)), and a guy I have never heard of Lucky Peterson, who has a song "Don't Cloud Up On Me", that is good enough, for me to practice, what I just preached to you, and investigate him further. All this for under $8.00! How can you not take a chance and buy this? Isn't your time, worth more than $8.00, to try and find new and unknown (to you) electric blues artists, in one swoop? Instead of listening to countless 30-second sound bites? Plus, Shaq just lessened your risk, by sharing this review with you! You can thank me, by rating this a helpful review. I've made this purchase, for you and me. I'll let you know, in future reviews, how my investigating turns out. P.S. I wish I had someone to help me like this.

5 out of 5 stars Shagging down memory lane.......2001-05-31

This is one of my favorite CDs.(OK, so I'm getting to the age where I'm sentimental.) I loved Beach Music when I was younger, and that hasn't changed. If you ever heard these songs on the Carolina beaches, you can't pass this up. It's worth every penny. If you recognize some of the songs, but never heard of beach music, you've got some catching up to do; but it's never too late! This one is definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars 1962 one of the great years in rock .......2005-07-28

Billboard has many great rock n roll hit compilations, but this is one of my favorites. Green Onions is a great instrumental hit, Duke of Earl is a timeless classic from doo wop, and Peppermint Twist Part 1 and the Locomotion were two of the most popular dances that year. All in their original versions!

4 out of 5 stars A good CD despite having only 10 songs - but BUYER BEWARE!.......2005-01-25

In 1988/9 Rhino introduced its superb "Top Rock'n'Roll Hits" (1955-1974) series featuring 20 years of music on 20 CDs at 10 songs per year / per disc. (Hey, neat-o!)

Then in 1993 Rhino reissued the discs in the subset spanning 1960-1969 thus creating two different versions of each in the process. Because these discs are available via Amazon Marketplace, who knows which ones you'll get if you buy them used! If this is important to you, be sure to ask the seller(s) before placing your order(s).

The most obvious visual differences between the two editions are the song titles on both the front covers and the actual CDs. The 1988/9 editions feature mixed-case titles. The 1993 editions feature uppercase titles.

The 1993 editions also have the songs listed on the covers in the same order in which they appear on the discs. The 1988/9 editions list the songs in an almost random order which can be very frustrating while the disc is being played.

The song selections are also different; some moreso than others. For 1962 only track 1 was changed.

1988 (1) The 4 Seasons, "Big Girls Don't Cry"
1993 (1) Booker T. & The MG's, "Green Onions"

In this case, I definitely prefer the 1993 edition because "Green Onions" is just so friggin' awesome! It's interesting that Rhino decided to swap out a song about crying with a song about onions. If it had been called "White Onions" there'd be no way those girls could hold back their tears no matter how big they are.

[Note: To my knowledge, the CDs spanning 1955-1959 and 1970-1974 have not been revised. One may also surmise that Rhino believes rock-n-roll died with the advent of disco since the title used for the discs spanning 1975-on-up is simply "Top Hits" - not to be confused, of course, with Rhino's other, similar series, "Top Pop Hits".]

4 out of 5 stars Stingy, stringy, stingy.......2004-11-03

Once again, we have 10 measly songs, all good ones. They were hits in 1962; I remember them well; I was there. They touched me. If you care about the chronology of hit songs, the times they represent, buy this CD. I just don't know why they don't charge $2-$3 more and double the number of songs on the CD. I can name 10 more just like them from 1962 but I won't bore you further. Four stars this time for too few songs.

5 out of 5 stars doo-wop doo-wop.......2002-06-30

Green Onions the cool hammond organ sound, one reason why i learned to play the keys
Duke Of Earl (before rap)
Soldier Boy the saxophone sendup harmony
Sheila tommy roe's buddy holly sound
Peppermint Twist-did you see joey d on the pbs doo-wop&pop special?
Locomotion written by carol king but i like the grand funk version better
The Wanderer hey its Dion's bad boy song
Breaking Up Is Hard to do, the 1st version by neil sedaka doo-wop style, great harmonies neil multi tracked
Johnny Angel a pleasing pop sound but does it try to hard for a dream?
Palisades Park a summer hit for the amusement park of that time
good listening in the car while driving

5 out of 5 stars A Variety of Classics.......1998-06-30

All these hits appear in their original versions with great sound quality.
