They say this CD was recorded between 2001 and 2004 "at home and on tour, in bedrooms, hotels, moving vehicles, parking garages...." But despite its name, this isn't an album of sketches, lost tracks, and other detritus. Instead, Artifact is a haunting document of ambient designs, trippy lounge, and cinematic atmospheres that occupy STS9's first new CD in five years. The "home" recordings are actually verité vignettes providing connecting tissue for songs like "Better Day," a haunting lament with breathy guest vocals from Audio Angel (Rashida Clendening), and the space-age lounge music of "Somesing." A band that plays as much as it programs, STS9's compositions have a natural flow and integrity, as if they were grown as much as computed. "Tokyo" is a hypnotic jam of slide guitar and electronic atmospheres lashed together on a kinetic groove sliced by dream sequence logic. Imagine the Grateful Dead going glitch on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and you have a good sense of STS9's sound and why they've played events from the alternative festival Coachella to jam-band gatherings like Bonaroo. Artifact doesn't look back, but forward to a horizon still a few moments in the future. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03

I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!

2 out of 5 stars just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09

loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06

Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.

2 out of 5 stars Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04

I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05

Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-05-06

Regardless of their stature as a live act, this is a wonderful recording. Strong, interesting songs, beautifully played and produced, make this album an easy 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Studio STS9.......2006-04-29

It is always difficult to listen to a great live band confined to the studio, but STS9 seems to bridge a gap. While I can easily say that STS9 is curently one of the strongest bands on tour today, studio work sometimes will take a second seat. However, in the case of Artifact, the tribe seems to weave a layer and texture of music that is often lost on traditional records. Innovation, energy and spirit define STS9 as best as i can. As the leaders of the "innovation generation" of the jam band scene, a la Disco Biscuits and Brothers Past to name a few, STS9 gives an energy that can't be matched. "Artifact" is just another step in blazing the ever evolving sonic soundscape that is Sound Tribe Sector 9

5 out of 5 stars Lush Livetronica.......2005-09-08

Far from being sleep inducing, new age, elevator fluff, this is an uplifting, atmospheric album. Imagine a less brooding Massive Attack or a more adventurous Thievery Corporation. The music here is rich with sophisticated (but accessible) beats, a strong sense of musical exploration, and yet, capable of the wistful moments found in Kevin Shields' Lost in Translation soundscapes. This largely instrumental affair does feature a handful of melodic and soulful vocal tracks reminiscent of M.J. Cole, Koop, and Zero 7. Fans of Tortoise are easily encouraged to experience the wide array of musical ideas and sonic textures that Sound Tribe Sector 9 have produced.

Rather than songs engineered by those with a technological approach, musicianship plays the key role on this warm and intellectual electronica. Supposedly, STS9 are wonderful on stage (I admit to never having seen them live) but this review is based on the album in question and not on the group's direction or capabilities beyond the studio. A truly refreshing and lyrical album, `Artifact' is worthy of investigation.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Effort.......2005-09-05

I was really excited about this album and I can not even begin to express what a total disappointment it was. I kept thinking the next track would have some life or some beat and it never got going. Before you invest in this maybe pick up a live show somewhere --if they allow taping of course-- and see for yourself if you can stomach STS9. Still can't believe how overwhelmingly BORING this album is/was. And believe me I have an open mind to the type of cutting edge experimental music this is trying to be.

2 out of 5 stars Much Better Live.......2005-08-02

STS9 has defined a new genre with their latest studio work: Elevator Trance. This album works better than a studio album. I came back from a concert festival fresh from a stunning STS9 show. I thought they were awesome, so I picked up this album. Yawn....use it as a sleeping pill if anything.

Product Description

"Artifact: Perspectives" is a collection of remixes by some of Sts9's favorite artists they've encountered along the way. "This could have been a box set if we went after everyone we wanted to connect with. We finally had to say 'enough is enough,' there will be other records." In mastering, the disc ended up being three minutes too long for production, resulting in a last minute cut, and a collection of exclusive remixes available only from 1320records.com. "The best thing about this project for us has been making some new friends and the prospects of more music and collaborations in the future." The new, full-length album "Artifact: Perspectives" features remixes of ARTiFACT studio tracks from Bill Laswell, Slicker, Ming+Fs, Elliot Lipp w/ Leo123, Mr. Lif, Richard Devine, Machine Drum, Karsh Kale, Collective Efforts, Genetic, Metrognome,Lowpro Lounge feat. ill 45, Bassnectar, Sub-ID, & Eustachian.

4 out of 5 stars I wish there was a 3 and a half star button.......2006-12-06

I bought this CD kind of on a whim while i was at Best Buy, because I have been trying to order "Live at Home" from Amazon for like 3 months and Im not sure if they know its out of print or what. Anyways this Cd is decent- Its good background music good for driving and chilling out while reading or flying or whatever. Its definitely worth hearing although it gets a bit repetitive. And on a few of the songs this woman's voice just sounds horrible. "I wonder why they never tried to tell me" over and over droning in your head. Its kind of trippy, ethereal lounge music/ trance. At the beginnings of a lot of the songs it kind of sounds like it is looking for the right frequency in your brain and then it hits it right on! If you've, heard STS9 perform live you may be disappointed. I'm glad i have it in my collection but I wouldn't recommend it if you've never heard STS9 before.

5 out of 5 stars Head Music for Deadheads.......2007-04-02

If you just like the down-home, country-sounding aspect of the Grateful Dead's music, this probably isn't the album for you. But if you love the spacy, swirling, improvisational aspect (think "Dark Star" on Live Dead), this DEFINITELY is the album for you. Pick a quiet night, settle back in your favorite chair with your earphones and a nice buzz (from whatever), close your eyes, and feast your brain! RATING: 5 "DARK" STARS!

4 out of 5 stars This is something else, but a good something..........2006-02-24

Let me start off by saying that Greyfolded is NOT what you might think it is...the ultimate Dark Star. It is far from it. That said, however, it is a work of intense complexity, dexterity, and an amazing knowledge of the material. It was put together in much the same way that Anthem was done; that is, from various live performances of the Dead, except that Greyfolded is done so to the nth degree. As others have noted here, it is performed with an "orchestra" of the various Grateful Dead bands across time, faded in and out to often devastating psychedelic effect. There is even a chart at the back of the booklet showing where all of the differing performances come in and out. Greyfolded is like an alloy of these performances, producing a final product with its own properties.

Since Grayfolded is its own work, it is not the happy Darkstar that I like to bliss out on for 20 minutes at a time. However, it is nearly 2 two hours of intense Darkstar-based music and sounds, all performed by the Dead according to the meticulous arranging and puzzle-fitting efforts of John Oswald. For someone out there looking for the ultimate Darkstar, go elsewhere. However, if you want a really interesting experimental GD extraganza, pick this up! Because this doesn't deliver the ecstatic punch that Darkstar delivers, I only give this record 4 stars out of 5. However, this IS still an amazing work.

4 out of 5 stars four and a half, actually.......2003-03-17

I'd give this five stars, but I'd save that for a Dead show...like a Dick's Picks or full show. However, this album serves as a testament to Dark Star, which in my opinion is the greatest song of all time, at least I'd say it's my favorite song. The Dead being the greatest musical assemblage of musicians show how over 25 years they transformed this piece, and where they could go with it, and what it's potential was. It's a [good] tune, all around and is THE signature Grateful Dead song. What more can you say?

5 out of 5 stars Time Travel.......2002-12-11

For Dark Star fans(and I understand there are a few of us)this is IT(so far).
Almost two hours of the Dead doing what they did best, improvising. This is John Oswalds "version" if you will of the ultimate Dark Star.He has taken over a hundred hours of tapes from the Dead Vaults ,all of performances of Dark Star and compiled ,segued and overdubbed a symphony of the Dead. The most amazing thing is that although this set covers a thirty year timespan it sounds so perfect and so cohesive that it defies logic. It is as if we owned a time machine instead of a compact disc player as we hear Jerry Garcia in 1971 duelling with Jerry Garcia in 1991.This is the most exciting music I have heard since I bought the King Crimson ProjeKCs box set.
You know you need this set!.

4 out of 5 stars Fantasy Illusion Dream.......2002-03-27

A lot of people in other reviews say that this disc doesn't sound like the "real" dark star as played by the Grateful Dead back in the '70s. Well, it's not. This is a JOHN OSWALD album - NOT a Grateful Dead album. What Oswald did was use parts of the Dead playing "Dark Star" to create his own piece.
And what a piece he created. Nearly two hours of seamless music, and all of it sounding like the paintings of Jackson Pollock, or the ultimate pipe dream. My favorite moments are the end of disc 1 and the beginning of disc 2, especially the feedback solo on "The Phil Zone". And how about the transition from "73rd Star Bridge" into "Cease Tone Beam"? Great stuff.
In some pressings of disc 2, there are three minutes of extra music hidden before the Multiple Garcias shout "transitive nightfall of diamonds". To find them, start the disc and as soon as the CD starts playing, hold down the "Reverse search" button on your CD player. The thing that shows the time will start counting backwards until it shows -3:02. When it does, release your finger and listen.
