Abdel Wright

Abdel Wright

Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
The newest Jamaican musician signed to a major label and the most ‘unknown’ Jamaican ever to make it to the forefront of international attention. Abdel’s music is not dance hall, but strictly roots with a modern flava that returns to the cultural origins of reggae as social commentary and spiritual inspiration with sensitive lyrics and guitar-led rhythms.

Abdel Wright was born in Trinityville, St. Thomas. His single parent mother was diagnosed with mental illness and he was taken as an infant to live at several Government children’s homes before ending up at SOS Children’s Village – a foster home in Stony Hill run by an Austrian charitable foundation and heavily sponsored by the late singer Johnny Cash. Cash owned a villa in Montego Bay and when Abdel was moved to the SOS Children’s Village in that city, he came in contact with the celebrated singer who often visited the home, playing his songs and accompanying himself on the guitar. For the fatherless Abdel, Johnny Cash was his role model. "I always wanted to be like Johnny Cash," he admits with a smile.

Plans for Abdel by his music company include many tours, as well as collaborating on an album with U2’s Bono. With the attention and admiration of such major music stars, Abdel will not remain an ‘unknown’ for much longer.

Product Description
In the most unconventional of Cinderella stories, Jamaican singer-songwriter Abdel Wright has risen from total anonymity to the brink of international acclaim. With his brand of socially conscious, rootsy reggae, Abdel has already garnered the attention of major label Interscope and superstars like U2’s Bono, who called Abdel the "most important Jamaican artist since Marley." Keep your eyes and ears open for his self-titled debut album this fall and a 2004 tour.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-06-22

U2's Bono described Abdel as the most significant musician to come out of Jamaica since Bob Marley. If he continues releasing albums of this quality, that will prove very true. I bought it after hearing Quicksand, and expected it to be more or less reggae. It is reggae in some ways, but owes just as much to acoustic folk and even country music. I don't know what to call it but "good"... I certainly hope he generates enough commercial success to ensure a steady flow of albums and tours, because this guy's music is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-04-23

I'm thoroughly impressed. I received this CD as a gift, and psuedo-reggae light rock isn't really my thing, but this CD blew me away. When I think I've found a favorite song on the album, another one comes and surprises me. I really recommend this for anyone looking to branch out into pleasantries.

5 out of 5 stars great new reggae arist, and cd.......2005-10-18

Abdel Wright is great! His politically fired lyrics and topics show what corruption is still in the world today. The hit, Quicksand, has a great sound with harmonica, drums, and other instruments. The whole CD is great for any fan of reggae or music in general. It has a soft sound with good words.

5 out of 5 stars Time will tell.......2005-08-29

I have had the honor of seeing Abdel Wright perform live and while it may be felt that his importance goes only as far as 'record sales or distribution ranges' i attest to Abdel's passion and depth towards the messages in the music and the realities of Jamaica. It may also be said that the music is 'radio friendly' but the music of Bob Marley that is heard today was also made radio friendly by Chris Blackwell when he marketed Marley to the world as he too understood that sometimes people only listen to real talent when they are coaxed. I believe that indeed time will tell and people will one day see how true and real Abdel Wright really is.

3 out of 5 stars Bono just don't know know.......2005-08-29

Sure this album is easier to ingest than the vast majority of jamaican exports, and cross-genre experiments are always fresh and interesting; yet this artist's message and delivery are in no way comparable to Bob Marley. Bob Marley was a timeless performer sharing the roots reggae movement with the world. Mr. Wright makes pop music that is radio friendly internationally. The importance of the artist means so much more than record sales or distribution ranges. Don't get me wrong, the album is pleasant; but time will tell its importance.
