The Presidents of the United States of America scratch that itch that you can't reach. They do and say all those things that you'd like to, but fear what people might think of you. They are your inner-child, but stinking drunk on a half-case of cheap beer. And, with the youthful appeal of the Dead Milkmen, the off-kilter storytelling of Primus, and a razor-sharp sense of irony, they are utterly undeniable.

Try, if you will, not to sing along with "Lump." It sticks in your brain after the first chorus and won't leave until you hear something supremely catchy just to scrape the chorus out of heavy frontal lobe rotation. Musically, they keep everything very minimal (they have only five strings between bassist Chris Ballew and guitarist Dave Dederer) and use their incredibly twisted wit to engage the listener. From the punkish "Lump" and "We Are Not Gonna Make It" to the funky "Boll Weevil," the Presidents are the perfect antidote to the serious, heavy-handed rock perpetuated by their Seattle brethren. --Adem Tepedelen

3 out of 5 stars She's lump, she's lump, she's lump - she might be dead!.......2006-08-29

I grew up on these songs! Kinda fun, kinda catchy, but nothing unbelievably special.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Kicks Out The Jams!.......2006-04-10

This is probably one of my favourite albums, and I kinda feel inclined to give it a track by track review. Enough blabbing, on with the show...

1. Kitty 8/10- Quite a catchy track, and quite funny too, especially the line "F*ck you kitty/you're gonna spend the night outside!" Not the best track here, but tends to go down well at live gigs.

2. Feather Pluckn 10/10- Very good track, probably taking it's cues from nonsense poems, as the song itself makes no sense. Very catchy guitar lines and chorus.

3. Lump 10/10- One of the best songs on the album, catchy as hell (like most of this album) and a great single. Seemingly a love song, but still pretty bonkers.

4. Stranger 10/10- Slow start, but with a killer chorus. Lots of weird uses of speech, but original, as you'd expect from PUSA. Tells the story of a love affair with a stripper, with plenty of humor.

5. Boll Wevil 9/10- Very funky, telling the story of trying to get a bug "friend" outside. Not the best again, but great bass, and the ending section is killer.

6. Peaches 11/10- The best track here, a song about- you guessed it- Peaches! Again, kinda nonsense, but endlessly catchy! The guitar riff echoes the poppier side of punk-pop acts, such as Dookie-era Green Day. No bad thing.

7. Dune Buggy 9/10- This track has grown on me immensley, at first I thought it was rubbish, but now I like it quite alot. A strange song about a spider driving a dune buggy.

8. We Are Not Going To Make It 11/10- The 2nd best here, very, very catchy, short, but sweet. A go at a "proper" punk song, and one of my favourites.

9. Kick Out The Jams 10/10- Cover of the MC5 song, speedily done, but thriling, fun and overall- ace!

10. Body 10/10- Very funky guitarbass and basitar here (as their instruments are dubbed) with another killer chorus, in the same style as Stranger. But better.

11. Back Porch 9/10- A weird, catchy number about being old, it seems. Very weird choice of guitar style and seems slightly folk-influenced, but all the better for it!

12. Candy 5/10- Shame about this track, the only not-so-good song on the album. Might grow on me, I'm not sure.

13. Naked And Famous 10/10- References to smurfs and 3D billboards in this great track. A fantastic closer with a sweeeeeet guitar solo. A great way to end the album.

Overall, it just rocks, end of story! Well worth getting (I got my copy for 99p off eBay) and just a fantastic album, great fun.

4 out of 5 stars A New Sound.......2005-12-07

I dug through a bargin bin i saw this and said,i'll try it.
I listened to the first track and the meowing bothered me beyond belief.I turned it off.I thought i waisted money,so i wanted to relisten to it since i was being so shallow.I was amazed.

This is a band from the 90's with no echoes of the grunge scene. The vocals seem so common, but they were put in a way that they are rythmatic and catchy. The opening song "Kitty" threw me off, but after the lengthy intro it seemed alot better."Lump" is the big hit on this album. It doesn't feel over polished, so not a single song seems outta place. Many bands that have that one over polished song makes their other pieces look like crud or below its standards. In this case this album doesn't suffer such a cruel fate, and avoids the matter entirly.

The guitar lacks ,it feels like it's more of an ambience then it does part of the actual song(With few exceptions). Each song has enough momentum to keep eachother flowing and making it fun.Not one song seems so much like another on this album that you feel trapped in one long song. For the most part the songs are slow to medium pace,no punk thrashing speed wich isn't bad.The bass has catchy hooklines like in "Boll Weevil".Some songs point out the obvious so much they are halarious."Peaches" made me laugh listen and you'll know.

The cover doesn't give you a good depiction of such a couragous band.
Don't be fooled this isn't another Everclear or Soundgarden knock off.Really good album, i don't know how common this is, so don't fuss if you can't pick it up.Just keep searching for it.

5 out of 5 stars Fungible Presidents?.......2005-06-22

Unlike years ago, they say, when FDR and Truman were Presidents, the recent past has been filled with what America might call "fungible Presidents." You've seen one, you've seen them all, so to speak. The reason that most people shove them all in the same basket is that the rhetoric is amazingly the same, what gets done is relatively elusive and tends to be here today, and gone tomorrow - the pattern of Presidents that come and go. Even the brighter lights are folded into the pages of history with amazing obscurity. It's possible that the White House of today isn't run the same it was in the days of more prominent Presidents, or perhaps longer terms are necessary to augment the common demeanor that is so much a part of public protocol in fulfilling their duties. Far from spectacular, most have been what the public senses as mediocre, momentary alpha characters drawn from a flurry of political insiders hoping to garnish their day in the sun with a style too often the same, an endless array of suits to accompany the suits of today and yesterday. Perhaps the weakness is in the American people, fed ever heightened genre of action films that renders Presidents more ordinary than not, or maybe Americans have simply seen too many come and go. The ability to retain a memory often resides with the spectacular now, or rooted in war zones of the men who fought there. In the endless parade over a lifetime, as we see from history, only history tends to remember their names, much less their records. Passing into the night, few retain former prominence or popularity without the constant, continuous beat of their drums......for those who will listen......unique soldiers of their own fortune, and of America's effort to make progress in an ancient world. Should they be more, a greater model of humanity, perhaps, or the wise sage of the past that envisioned the future? Possibly, but is the public willing and able to allow that persona to develop wings when they know that in four years, or eight at best, it will be yet another soldier at the helm?

5 out of 5 stars Pressies Rule.......2005-05-19

'smartest reviewer' my ass. This is one of my favourite albums simply because the tunes are hellishly catchy and the guys refuse to take themselves seriously. This CD belongs in everyone's collection and since the Pressies are currently touring (and I was lucky enough to see them) there's no better time than the present to brush up on the biggies - Kitty, Lump, Peaches, Boll Weevil and Dune Buggy. Great stuff for those of us who don't take life too seriously

5 out of 5 stars Great music, even if you didn't see the movie.......2007-05-31

First, let me say that I have seen Dead Presidents many times. Hearing the soundtrack brings back memories of each corresponding scene. The artists and the songs comprising this disc are some of the greatest artists of the late 60's and early 70's. Walk on By has been remade so many times that it is great to have the original version. It's sad so many people only know Isaac Hayes as the voice of the Chef on South Park. This song, along with Never Gonna Give You Up by Barry White and If You Want Me to Stay by Sly and the Family Stone are some of the greatest songs of the 70's period.

This is an excellent addition to the music collections of those who love 60's and 70's R&B.

4 out of 5 stars Fly A** Walk Thru The 70's.......2007-03-29

I've seen the movie Dead Presidents many times and enjoyed it but the music throughout the movie blew my mind! So I had to have this soundtrack. I was born in the 80's but the music from the 70's basically set the trend for the music we hear today. Today's artists copy beats from 70's music and this CD explains why. Sit back, relax and fantasize hanging out with Foxy Brown or Superfly. Just listen to Track No. 3 and hear why the world fell in love with James Brown and will forever miss him. This IS real music. I just wish the CD had more tracks.

5 out of 5 stars "...Nixon Talking About Don't Worry..." - Mayfield.......2007-03-06

I never saw the film, but the soundtrack is simply superb, it's definitely a must have.

This album's been lodged in my car's CD player for a few months now and just keeps pumping out great stuff over and over again. About five or six years ago I used to listen to it a lot while driving, for some reason I put it aside and never got around to listening to it much after that, now I'm back listening to it all the time.

Isaac Haye's version of Walk on By is excellent; however the two songs that stand out are The Spinners' I'll Be Around and Mayfield's If There's Hell Below. When I'll Be Around kicks in it's impossible to ignore the beat and harmony upon hearing that initial rhythm guitar and background drums. It's easily one of the catchiest records to come out of the early 70s.

Mayfield's ode to a possible pending apocalypse is simply sensational with its driving base beat and quasi rap feel. Lots of great lines fill up the lyrics of that song.

In my book, if there's a 'must have' CD this one is towards the top of the list.

5 out of 5 stars Hot just like the movie.......2007-01-06

There is no words to describe this soundtrack. For those who don't know, this soundtrack has one of the hottest line-ups of 70's artist there were. I love the ole' school. If you like ole' school too, you need to get this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Old school... and great!.......2004-01-19

You want great 70's music??? This is the soudntrack for you. It will take you back in time wihtout skipping a beat. One of the best soundtracks of oldies I have heard yet.

It's come to my attention that the Presidents of the United States of America really seem to piss-off some people. Seems the Seattle trio are just not depressing and dour enough for those who have become accustomed to the miserable angst polluting MTV and radio stations nationwide. Well, if the PUSA have their goofy, little way, everyone will loosen up a bit and stop taking everything so seriously. When did music stop being about entertainment?

It hasn't in the Presidents' tweaked, adolescent world. Like their political counterpart, Bill Clinton, these happy-go-lucky boys just want to make everything OK in the world. What better way to do so than the welcome handshake of "Ladies and Gentlemen Pt. 1" to start things off right? "Good evening ladies and gentlemen, are you prepared to rock?" they inquire and then repeat quite definitively, "Let's rock," just so you know they mean business.

And let there be no doubt, the Presidents are dead serious about not being serious. We find the usual assortment of odd character's ("Froggy," "Little Indian Princess," and others) and wacky scenarios ("Tiki God," "Puffy Little Shoes," "Bath of Fire," and "Lunatic to Love"), but the best lyrical webs spun by frontman Chris Ballew are trivial little vignettes turned into irresistible anthemic pop songs. The PUSA are the finest proponents of mindless escapism of the strangest variety. So, leave all your worldly troubles behind when you pop this baby in the CD player, and take a trip to the Presidents' world as they beckon, "This is the show, we are the band, sometimes it just takes you by the hand." --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Let's Rock.......2006-08-12

Well, every PUSA album is great, you really can't compare them cause everyone has such a great hit, it's really just amazing. The first song on this album is so simple that it's really ingenius, it has a very simple meaning: "Let's rock"-with a great tune. And really the first 6 songs are just great hits that anyone will enjoy, but after that it's not as good but stil awsome. I think this album has the most hits of any Presidents album, but I can't say that it's my favorite, cause each album like I said is spectacular, but I'd have to say Freaked out and Small is my favortie, and this might push in at 2nd, but anywho.

So go out and buy everyone of the Presidents albums..NOW (just get the albums used like me..haha)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's ever........2004-12-08

The Presidents manage to pull off their wonderful, elegant blend of silly yet intellectual, on an even better level than before, in II (which I consider to be their best). The clever Elvis-metaphor of "Froggie" make it one of the best songs on here. I also got great pleasure out of finally memorizing all the words in "Volcano". If you like PUSA you MUST get this CD, especially with prices here such as 1.15 used. One-click ordering. Just do it.

5 out of 5 stars ..........2003-08-03

I must have listened to this CD more than 20 times in the past week. The Presidents' music just makes you happy. Most of their songs have no meaning, and it's refreshing to listen to them and let go of all your worries and have a good time. A bonus for Washington residents is that a couple of the songs are about or at least make references to places in Seattle and the state. Excellent music, fun to sing along to, and I can't seem to get tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best PUSA Album.......2003-06-29

This is definately the best PUSA CD...here's the lowdown:

1.Ladies & Gentlemen Part 1: 9/10-A great way to welcome the audience to the album!
2.Lunatic To Love: 10/10-A very funny tongue twister song!
3.Volcano: 9/10-Catchy lyrics and great guitar sounds.
4.Mach 5: 8/10-It's okay,but at least the video's pretty funny.
5.Twig: 100/10-In my opinion the best song ever written by PUSA, the lyrics are so funny and the guitar sounds are hillarious!
6.Bug City: 9/10-Another great song....but sometimes i skip it.
7.Bath of Fire: 7/10-Eh, the lyrics are kind of funny.
8.Tiki God: 10/10-Another one of my favorite PUSA songs. Na na na na na na!
9.LIP: 10/10-The chorus to this song is very catchy.
10.Froggie: 8/10-Again the lyrics are clever, but the song gets somewhat boring...this is another one i sometimes skip.
11.Toob Amplifier: 10/10-A short and sweet little song about their equipment!
12.Supermodel: 9/10-I personally like the Supersonics version better.
13.Puffy Little Shoes:9/10:Longest PUSA song ever...and funny...especially when the crowd screams ROCK AND ROLL PLACE!
14.Ladies & Gentlemen Part 2: 10/10-A great way to end a great CD! I like the harmonizing by Dave and Jason.
15.Basketball Dream: 9/10-Clever 15 second bonus track featuring Chris' nephew Tony.

This is definately PUSA's best CD. It features so mant great songs.

4 out of 5 stars What wasThe World Thinking!?!.......2003-04-19

I'm sorry, but I dissagree with just about the rest of the worlds population...This is a great album. Sure I got bored with the first album after it was seriously overplayed, but in 2002 I started listening to Naked and Famious again. I played it on my own show and people began to rave about the Presidence once more. Then I picked up II and it was GREAT. The songs haven't lost their touch, although Puffy Little Shoes isn't that great of a song; if you need an album to just jam to, and you're not looking for anything serious...This is tha album for you! Although you can catch the agony of the one-hit-wonder in Froggie, and sure singing about getting a golf club (Toob Amplifier) is goofy, but this is a good buy!

Album Description

The Presidents Of The United States Of America's 1995 debut went double platinum in the U.S., rocketed all the way to #6 on Billboard's Top 200, produced three Top 40 hits & a #1 single on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart, and garnered two Grammy nominations and a gaggle of critical praise. You either loved this record or…you loved it.

The band is back and, believe it or not, they once again own this album. They've chosen NAIL to distribute it, which is in line with their renewed esprit de corps and desire to keep things friendly and local this time around. The album is on the band's own PUSA Music label, headquartered in their hometown of Seattle, just up the road from NAIL's Portland HQ. Getting the rights to this classic debut back from Sony precipitated the band's recent much anticipated reunion.

The Presidents played their first show in five years on New Year's Eve 2002, and in the last year and a half they've continued gathering steam. The new songs originally recorded for the re-release of their debut became a whole new album, 'Love Everybody,' which produced the current radio hit "Some Postman." The band has been touring the U.S. this summer and fall in support of that release, and will continue with dates in major markets through the end of 2004.

5 out of 5 stars 10 years on and still improving with age.......2005-08-22

I bought his album ten years ago when it came out first. It was special at the time, singles like 'peaches' and 'lump' matched my energy at the time. It seemed like there was only one song that summer, 'peaches' and it lasted beyond. The songs on the original are great summer party songs and they still are. I lost my original a while back and the summers just werent the same - this album has a great energy and this summer was made complete with this release. The added material is interesting but a little desparate, there are some good alternate versions of the originals and some demos. The demos are interesting to see how the process involved in songwriting works and then to compare with the finished product, as i said interesting but i could have done without half of the bonus material. The original album hasnt lost any of its vibrant, headbopping energy and the sometimes complete childish idioacy of the lyrics makes the music special in its genre and still makes me grin. Yes, i am that old fart in the office, 2 stone heavier, and thinks that nightclubs are to noisy - reliving the lost pleasures of youth and fond memories - it works for me. This album is good fun both 10 years ago and today. enjoy the fun.

4 out of 5 stars Cool CD.......2005-07-29

I sent this cd to a good friend who's an avid PUSA fan and he liked the album so much that until now he never fails to say thank you (that's 2 weeks since I gave him the cd). I like their 2 songs, Peaches and Lump. A good ol' punk CD. :)

5 out of 5 stars Everybody Wants To Be Naked And Famous.......2005-02-06

Talk about nostalgia. I wore this album out back when I was 14. When I got a couple years older, I sold most of my CDs because I needed money and wanted to put off getting a job for as long as I could. Unfortunately, this album was one of those I sold. I downloaded this album a few months ago and fell in love with it again. I remembered and sang all the words to every song with a huge, beaming smile on my face the whole time. Song to song, this album is a complete blast. It's brilliantly simple, tons of fun, and outrageously sophomoric. If you're looking to hear social commentary, look elsewhere. In this country run by these Presidents you'll hear songs about animals, chicks, dune buggies, and 30 foot smurfs. Being that my last name is Peach, I feel like I have some sort of connection with these guys, even though it got to be annoying during high school when the song "Peaches" was big. Now being 10 years older and in the "real" world, I listen to this album and it transports me to a time in my life when I didn't have a care in the world. It's the type of album you put on when you're wasted or when you're just plain lurking to rock out. I'm excited that they got back together and they're making music again. Looking forward to hearing more stuff and hopefully seeing them on tour.

5 out of 5 stars THEY"RE BAAAACK.......2005-01-07

I loved this CD when it first came out, i was a freshman in high school. It was stolen from me and i have been searching for it since then. I went to the local CD store, where they can order any CD you can think of, only to find out that it was out of print. I was bummed! Then i thought, about AMAZON and how they have new and used figuring that someone had to be selling a used copy. I was elated to see my favorite CD not only back in print but enhanced by a bonus DVD. To my fellow generation, buy now, relive those fund days of High School when these guys rocked our world. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow!

5 out of 5 stars YEAH, THE PRESIDENTS ARE BACK!.......2004-11-06

Finally, after many years, the Presidents decided to re-release their 1st album. It went out of print a little while ago, just as I was getting into these guys. And now, they have brought it back on their independent label. Now we can all get our daily dosage of ROK!

Album Description

In the midst of an unpredictable election year, what better band to resurface than the once and future leaders of buoyant, absurdist rock - the Presidents of the United States of America? The newly reunited PUSA has been in the studio cooking up a new platform for playfulness in rock, featuring 14 songs including the already hit single "Some Postman."

Since the band's split in December 1997, fans have been sending letters and e-mails urging them to reunite and asking why they broke up in the first place. Twelve months earlier, the Seattle-based trio has released II, the follow-up to their wildly successful 1995 self-titled Columbia Records debut. Initially released on the idie label PopLlama, The Presidents of the United States of America went double platinum, rocketed all the way to #6 on Billboard's Top 200, produced three Top 40 hits and a #1 single on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, and garnered two Grammy nominations and a gaggle of critical praise. Their videos blanketed MTV, they toured the planet, played a live MTV concert at Mount Rushmore, and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Howard Stern Show and Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve. As if that weren't enough, II spawned another Top Ten modern rock hit, "Mach 5," and the band contributed a rocking cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star" to the platinum-selling soundtrack to Adam Sandler's The Wedding Singer. At the end of the line, Pure Frosting included a cover of the Ian Hunter song "Cleveland Rocks," which was used as the theme song to the Emmy-nominated Drew Carey Show.

For their new album, the band recorded basic tracks at Egg Studios with Conrad Uno (Posies, Supersuckers, Young Fresh Fellows) and at Jupiter Studios with Martin Feveyear (Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan). The new songs run the gamut, though one tune, "Some Postman," has already proven itself after being leaked onto Seattle's KNDD and subsequently turned into a highly-requested local hit. The band will also re-release their eponymous multi-platinum debut this fall along with a DVD including their hit videos, live and interview footage. Nine years later, songs - smart, tuneful and exhilarating - from The Presidents of the United States of America still hold up.

3 out of 5 stars Great to See Them Back but the Album Seems a Bit Rushed!.......2006-09-24

The President of the United States are definitely one of the most unique sounding bands out there and that unique style is more than recognisable on this album. However the quality of these songs is not up there with the original albums they had before their retirement. It is almost like they have been enticed to come out of retirement and written these songs in a couple of days to get an out of retirement album out there in the market place. I can't see them having a big hit off this album but the songs do grow on you a little bit after a few plays. Great to see them back, a lot of the original fans like me will buy this just to hear something new from them but they'll have to put a bit more effort into their next album to attract new fans and survive.

5 out of 5 stars The Presidents of Pop-Punk.......2005-07-14

Much like coming out of the Seattle grunge scene in the early nineties, laughing in the face of all that was over the top gloom, dread, and misery in music; The Presidents of The United States of America (or POTUSA) have once again arrived at just the right time. While most bands are getting their kicks on emo, POTUSA is back with hooks so catchy, and lyrics so hilariously clever, it'll send any self-righteous scenester running for the hills.

Highlight songs include the perverse "Drool At You" Which hilariously walks the line between creepy obsession and pure cuteness, and one hell of a catchy synth line to boot. "Some Postman", another song about sick obsession packaged with sweet pop goodness. Honestly there is not one song on this album to scoff at, unless you are some uptight music snob afraid to have fun.

This is the most impulsive and fast POTUSA album yet. Anyone turned off by songs about little bugs or the country twang in the debut should be very pleased to hear that "Love Everybody" delivers a brand new sound right off the bat. Songs like "Shreds of Boa" and "5,500 Miles" spare the silliness and bring the rock and roll. Those who loved the sound of self titled, well at least you'll love the old school themed track, "Munky River"

The fun and tongue-in-cheek humor never lets up on this album, making it hands-down the best pop-punk album since Mr. T Experience's "Revenge Is Sweet, And So Are You". It's a great album to get if you want to get under the skin of that emo kid who lives down the hall. Blast those geeky tunes with pride, brave music fan; and to the Presidents, I salute you.

3 out of 5 stars I am an Extreme PUSA fan, so take it from me..........2005-04-07

this CD is okay. i love the presidents and this CD was still a good buy but you would be much better off buying a different one... "Shreds of Boa" and "Poke and Destroy" are really good though...

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Refreshing.... and Fun.......2005-03-17

The Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA) were one of my favorite bands of the large litter of off-kilter 90's bands when I was younger, and it's very refreshing to see a great 90's band such as these guys make a great album these days in an industry composed of bland, talentless rock, especially when most of their peers from the 90's have been rather disappointing as of recent.
The album is stacked full of hit songs ('Love Everybody', 'Zero Friction', 'Highway Forever', 'Surf's Down', 'Munky River', and of course 'Some Postman'). It's amazing that after nearly a decade and a few albums along the way, PUSA have managed to maintain their style and finesse and make an album that as always, is FUN to listen to. Their songs's quirkiness and funny/catchy lyrics are what has always embodied their music, and made PUSA who they are.
The album is not as good as their debut, but is a close second in my opinion, and a must-have album for not only a PUSA fan, but for anyone who's into good music that rocks.

4 out of 5 stars Holy sweet awesome Batman!.......2005-02-18

Once upon a time, I discovered the Presidents. They were simply amazing. Then they left, and my world was a little darker... But now, they are back. "Love Everybody" is freakin' sweet. Buy it. Buy it now and buy a copy for your friend. Share the love. Seriously though, it's amazing how PUSA has stayed true to their fun, goofy songs about basically nothing while still keeping completely involved with their music. I'm not sure if the previous sentence made sense, so allow me to rephrase: BUY EVERY PRESIDENT'S ALBUM EVER. Love Everybody has so much to offer and, just like all of their other albums, there is not one song that I don't like. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. That is all.

Other note: I give this album five stars, but for some reason stupid amazon wouldn't let me change my rating.

Pure Frosting, the Presidents' farewell/B-sides-and-outtakes collection is consistent with--in fact, as good, or better than--the band's two proper studio albums, not hard for such an enjoyably slight outfit. The Seattle pop trio's last recordings include typically, entertainingly goofy considerations of subjects like "Mobile Home," a waitress at the "Love Delicatessen" and touring "Japan." "Man (Opposable Thumb)" turns out to have more going for it than a great title, proving a clever dissection of both machismo and human nature. Live versions of three cuts from their platinum debut are redundant, but fit with the record's agreeably slapdash nature; a sophomore-effort number, "Tiki God," is included here in its bongo-driven "lounge" incarnation. And while a CD-single version of Plastic Bertrand's immortal "Ca Plane Pour Moi" isn't here, two other great covers--"Video Killed the Radio Star" (a staple of the group's live show cut for The Wedding Singer) and a torrid, totally apt rendition of Ian Hunter's "Cleveland Rocks" (The Drew Carey Show's theme)--do end up highlights. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album.......2005-09-21

If you are not already a fan of this band, make this your first album. I've had it since it first came out and it's still the best CD I own. Usually when playing a CD, I only listen to the 2 or 3 songs I like, then turn it off. This is a CD to turn on, sit back, and enjoy. It's good start to finish. The only possible exception is "Sunshine" which just doesn't seem to belong on this album. On the whole, though, I can't recommend this album enough!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Sweet.......2005-02-17

I highly disagree with the few reviews on this page. There are absolutely ZERO low points on this album. I suppose that Slip Away could be considered a low point when put in perspective, if Teenage Girl is %1,000 awesome, then Slip Away is only %457 awesome, but they're both way more than awesome. I'd also like to say to the people who say that PUSA has never done anything like Tremelo Blooz: What about Back Porch and, to a lesser extent, Froggy? However, I do agree that this is a must have for any PUSA fan. Even if you're not a PUSA fan, buy this album and the other four and become a fan of one of the greatest bands ever.

5 out of 5 stars More TV Than Airplay.......2003-07-16

It's a shame that PUSA never recieved much radio airtime after their first album was overplayed. This is a great album and a must for any Presidents fan. Love Delicatessen is a great opener, then it's followed by the never great Video Killed The Radio Star (a mediocre song from the start), but the bouncy Mobile Home boosts the beat. Japan is simply a rock song with a good beat, while Sunshine is a change; not for the better or worse, but something different for the band. The Live Version of Back Porch is jus enjoyable to hear (for those of us who never saw them in concert). Man is just odd, it starts out fine, then changes styles completely. The original Tiki God was better, but this one has it's place. Teenage girl is another rock song. Slip Away is a low point, but is worth listening to. Tremolo Blooz is a fun Delta Blues/Western tune and is one of the highest points on the album. Wel all know Cleveland Rocks, and the Live version on Lump surpasses the original.
Overall GET THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars Probably PUSA's second best CD........2003-06-29

This CD features songs that have been released on other various recordings including two live songs of Back Porch (excellent version) and Lump. Some songs on here have never been released before. And some of these songs are in movies/tv shoes. Video Killed the Radio Star was featured in the Wedding Singer, and Cleveland Rocks is the theme song to the Drew Carey Show. Both of those songs weren't written by PUSA. And another song known to the fans would be Tiki Lounge God, but in a totally different style, it is pretty much acoustic with bongo drums.

All in all, a great CD to end the career of a great band!

5 out of 5 stars Pure frosting, extra frosting you'll eat the cake.......2003-05-20

The final episode of the P of USA album trilogy. This album's main hits were sensational cover versions of classic songs. Video Killed the Radio Star and Cleveland Rocks (as heard in the opening credits of the Drew Carey Show) are superb.

Original songs on here such as Japan and Love Delicatessen are pretty good too. There's also a few live songs on here as well which may be a real bonus if you never bought an singles or album versions with bonus live tracks. The P of USA were pretty good live.

If you can get the version of this album with the Extra Frosting bonus disc you'll get all the hits from their previous two albums so if you don't have them and only want to buy one album then this one is for you. If you do own those then the bonus disc doesn't have much to offer you except putting those all on one disc. This is still a great album to buy without Extra Frosting.

Somewhat unfortunately, it's impossible to access Smoosh's arresting debut without taking into account the ages of the group's two members at the time of its release: keyboardist/vocalist Asya is 12 and the drummer is her 10-year-old sister, Chloe. Try to get past the pre-teen status of the duo and listen to She Like Electric on its own terms and you'll encounter a striking collection of 14 playful, adventurous, eclectic indie-pop originals. Recalling everything from Ben Folds to Quasi to a young Joni Mitchell, Asya exhibits talent that's matched by considerable ambition as she glides through songs that draw on pop (the bouncy "It's Not Your Day to Shine), punk ("La Pump"), hip-hop (the truly rad "RAD"), and, honestly, `70s No Wave (the shrill, screeching "Bottlenose"). Strikingly unselfconscious and inventive, and yet oddly mature, She Like Electric delights at every turn. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

Seattle's Smoosh are a sister duo who make exceedingly endearing, piano/synth-based indie pop and have shared the stage with Death Cab for Cutie, The Presidents of the United States of America, Cat Power and Sleater-Kinney. Oh… and they're 10 and 12 years old.

But these self-directed musical prodigies can hold their own against any fully grown bands. ROCKRGRL magazine compared their sound to "a stripped down version of the first side of Pet Sounds." Seattle's The Stranger puts it even more succinctly in saying "Smoosh is awesome." We think you'll agree.

She Like Electric, their debut album, was recorded at the legendary Egg Studios (Posies, Young Fresh Fellows, Presidents of the USA.) in Seattle in a mere three days (with 2 more days for mixing) under the steady hand of engineer/producer Johnny Sangster. And, yes, every note of this album was written and performed by Asya and Chloe with no adult intervention.

The band has already gained a wide following of fans, including Cat Power's Chan Marshall, who has been finishing her shows of late by lip synching to a live version of Smoosh's song "Rad."

From the joyful and contemplative ("To Walk Away From") to the silly and giggly, ("The Quack") to the angry and bittersweet ("But Now I Know"), urgency prevails.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Well..........2006-09-27

I don't know. They tried...but failed. 'Bottlenose' was just...it actually reminded me of the music they put on those Anime shows. It was crazy...really...the rapping is cheesy...what else? I have to give 'em props for the music they actually play. They are good at that. But otherwise...I just don't know what to say.

2 out of 5 stars Incredible talent that's still developing..........2006-09-14

I have listened to this band only during their interview with Nic Harcourt on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. I just think that it's awesome that some kids with potential and some success don't have huge egos and are still pretty wholesome. I don't think it's appropriate to compare their music to the other indie rock bands out there, being that they're 12 or 13 and they don't have any pedigree or training. The interview says it all. They're just starting out. I look forward to their music five years from now when they've had more experience.

"Free to Stay"
by Smoosh
Barsuk Records
3½ (rounded up to 4)(out of 5) stars

When one looks into the genre of young musical groups, most of what you'll find is fluffy pop fare. Groups from Boyz II Men to Hanson to Britney Spears have become commonplace on today's musical radar. That's one of the things that make Seattle's Smoosh so impressive. They've managed to shed the fluffy pop sound of their contemporaries and do something wholly original. They may be the first mainstream child indie rock band.
Smoosh, a duo featuring thirteen year-old Asya (their parents refuse to give out their last names to try and grant their children and a normal childhood) on keyboards and vocals and her eleven year-old sister Chloe already have a resume that would make the most seasoned musicians blush. They've still got a few more years before they can drive, but they've already opened for Jimmy Eat World, Rilo Kiley, Sleater-Kinney, and spent the last summer touring with the eels. Their newest release, "Free to Stay" has been released on the quickly emerging Barsuk Records (also home to They Might Be Giants, Rilo Kiley and Death Cab for Cutie).
Asya's keyboards roar with a grungy flair closest to fitting a Sleater-Kinney record on the opening track "Find a Way". Songs like this is what makes young teen bands stars. With their big sound and catchy melodies, Smoosh picks up right where they left off from their debut album, 2004's "She Like Electric". Asya's sound is quite overpowering, especially using to two different keyboard effects at once. This creates a beautiful wall of sound behind Smoosh. Smoosh manages to make music that has an eccentric mix of Sarah Sleans, voice, beautiful harmonies, and piano-work, Hanson's incredibly smart, radio-friendly pop, with Le Tigre's grunge-movement rock. The record is never really groundbreaking (especially in lyrical continent), but it's great pop music from a duo with nothing but infinite possibilities of ahead of them.
Drummer Chloe's work, while not being very technical is very clean. She has a lot more control than drummer I've seen that are twice her age. Tracks like "Organ Talk" showcase both the bands humor and their musicianship as we can the start of the band branching off, ever so slowly, into other genres.
The record does have it faults though. "I Would Go" has some blatantly auto-tuned vocals. Asya's voice is still developing and with some more work, she's dto do more with her voice, but she seems a bit bound by her lack of experience. Tracks Clap On", would greatly benefit from Asya throwing in a bit of gravel into her voice. The sloppiness of the record, for the most part, offers irrereplacable charm, but can be a bit too much for musical perfectionists. The lyrical content is also very repititivie, but the fact is, Asya's a better writer than people three times older than her. Once these early emotions, the ones that a there in every teenage child grow up, she'll be better for it and finally read to leave foll
I recommend Free to Stay for any pop junkee. It's a good listen, a good record, and a lot of fun. I've gotten this record many spins before finishing this review and I'm likely to have many more in the near future. Shortcomings notwithstanding, music like this is exactly what the state of modern music needs right now. And just think. Their eight year-old sister just started bass lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Smoosh are Smashing.......2006-07-10

The pure innocence of this project is most appealing. In a day & age when provocative images and negative messages prevail in music, Smoosh are very refreshing. But never mind that, these girls ROCK! Highlights for me are "Pygmy Motorcycle," which demonstrates solid, sophisticated song writing, "Make it Through," a brilliant catchy single, and "The Quack," a playful creative cut that just makes you smile. The entire album shines, but I just decided to highlight a few personal favorites. Smoosh are extremely talented, fun, and passionate. The older you are, the further back they take you to a day when life was more simple and fun. The song writing is even better on the 2nd album, but this is an incredible debut. Good show, girls!

4 out of 5 stars Great job!.......2006-04-19

I found this album to be honest and genuine. Many of the tracks display real budding talent and intellect that is not often seen in 9 and 11 year olds. Other tracks are silly, with screaming and giggling, and there are moments when Asya doesn't sing on-key or mumbles the sometimes-repetative lyrics. MTV material they are not. But one thing I can't call them is bad. For a pair of youngsters who accidentally fell into the music scene with zero formal training, this is a fantastic piece of work. No, the songs on this album won't be winning any awards, but compare them to your average teen/pre-teen pop singer, and Smoosh is a refreshing breeze. If you're looking for manufactured-sounding music, digitally enhanced vocals, and generic love songs, look elsewhere, because what you're going to get with "She Like Electric" is two girls having a lot of fun.

Since releasing this album, the girls have grown up a bit, and their musical skills have improved vastly. Catch them live, or find some footage of them live on Google video or YouTube. "Sucks"? "No talent"? I think not.

Great job, girls; eagerly awaiting your next album!

Album Description

How come you've never heard of this record by a band that's sold millions? And why did it only sell 25,000 copies when it came out on dot.com startup Musicblitz.com in 2000?

Well, it wasn't because the record isn't great. 'Freaked Out And Small' got rave reviews in CMJ, Alternative Press and All Music Guide, among others.

Presidents guitarist Dave Dederer offers a full explanation: "In 2000, the Presidents didn't even exist. We'd been split up for almost three years. A family friend of mine was doing A&R at this startup, and he offered us some dough up front to go in and cut a record for a download-only release. We told him we weren't a band, we weren't reuniting, we weren't going to play any shows, we weren't doing any promo and we'd make whatever the hell record we wanted to make. By the time we were making the record, Musicblitz realized that the web thing wasn't going to work. They decided overnight to become a brick-and-mortar record company, something they knew nothing about. And then they went bankrupt just a couple of months after the record came out. Personally, I'm blown away that it sold as many records as it did. And I'm proud of the record - it's probably my favorite thing we've recorded."

The Presidents are, of course, reunited. They've been touring the U.S. since early 2003 and released a new album, 'Love Everybody,' in August 2004. All three of the Presidents' NAIL releases are on the band's own PUSA Music label.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Ok, what are the other guys here smoking?.......2007-05-04

I felt compelled to write a quick review after reading 3 5-star reviews. This album does not deserve 5 stars, it's by far the worst effort from PotUSA, and this coming from someone who owns every album, has seen them live 3 times, and pretty much grew up on them as my favorite band for at least 8 years. This album might be worth owning if you want to claim you have every Presidents album, as it's relatively unknown, but there was only 1 track that actually stood out for me: the last one, which I've seen used on MTV during a skating show. A few others might make you smile, but mostly this album shows how uninspired the Presidents were during this time period. Thank god they came out with Love Everybody, which isn't exactly an incredible album (the entire middle of the album is instantly forgettable, but with songs like Monkey River and Jennifer's Jacket it saves itself). 5 stars? Bah. I'm being generous when I give it 2.

5 out of 5 stars The Presidents at their BEST!.......2006-03-04

I own three PUSA albums already (I, II, and Pure Frosting). After purchasing this fourth, I have to admit that the Presidents get better with each album. I loved their more well-known hits from their early CD's, but "Freaked out and Small" has got some of their best songs yet.

Lots of goofy content here, some that I'm probably wise not trying to figure out. But some rocking songs like "Tiny Explosions," "Nuthin but love," "Last Girl on Earth," and "Jupiter." Also some neat slower songs in the mix. The demos are interesting - many are the same tune but with some major differences - instrumentation, tempo, etc.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for any Presidents fan (and anybody who loves fun, toe-tapping music).

5 out of 5 stars pure Presidents.......2005-07-11

This disk takes the Presidents to the extreme! Everything that make the Presidents the Presidents (the quirky lyrics, the simple and energetic beat, the blasting wall of sound, and most of all the whimsy) is exagerated as much as possible. Who else could write an ode to the Death Star which includes the phrase "so good they built it twice"?

You may think you have the disk on repeat, because the first half is the finished songs, and the second half is most of the same songs over again, in demo versions. This may be a little much -- the polished versions are all better than the demo versions. There's a reason why demos don't usually get released.

However, even if they hadn't included the demos this disk would be well worth buying. It's almost impossible not to dance to. It's also better than the recent comeback album. This was the Presidents at their peak -- at least, at their peak in the first go-around.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of 25k... .......2004-11-25

So yes, i was one of the few people who actually bought that cd off of musicblitz.com. (which i think is now a realestate page.) Anyhow, if you have heard any of the Presidents past albums, you'll love this one. This one is a bit more fun sounding as chris ballew adds more of his keyboarding-ness... If you never heard of PUSA, they are a great rock band who play fun songs. Its not punk, not hard rock, not grunge, its just fun to listen to. Peppy little songs about goofy little things that will just make you smile. Great tracks that will surely get stuck in your head. I'm glad to see that they are re-releasing it again to a(hopefully) bigger audience.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-05-30

The Presidents can do no wrong and this CD helps prove this. They throw in several original recordings of songs which is different to listen to compared to the final releases. Finally Novocaine Hurricane is just an amazing song and I feel that every P.U.S.A. fan should listen to it. Do yourself a favor and buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely enjoyable.......2000-06-06

The pleasure associated with listening to PUSA has never been a highly intellectual one, it's just about having a good time while the boys 'kick out the jams'. If you agree with this definition Rarities won't let you down. But I'll go further: the only problem I have with both of PUSA'albums is that they get a bit repetitive, most of the songs are played as fast as possible, and this speedy tempo sometimes does more harm than good. Here, the variety of the materials (demos, lives, and other non-released stuff) breaks the monotony of PUSA's studio albums, which is probably why I listen to Rarities more than to their other albums. A case in point is "Volcano": though it is OK in its album version, here, in its laid back demo-track version, it comes out as a really great song. The live versions are a bit uneven but they put across the wacky charm of PUSA very well, bad jokes and all. Last but not least, Ca plane pour moi is a very descent rendition of Belgian punk Plastic Bertrand's everlasting standard. Yeah, you can never be serious with those guys...

This is awesome! I love this CD. It rocks, I can't believe some people didn't rate it 5 stars. I mean with all the cool songs, Volcano, Peaches, Video Killed the Radio Star, Lump, they are all good. Anyway, I rate this the best CD ever.
