On 1976's The Pretender, Jackson Browne confessed to enough distractions from his craft and disenchantment with the world around him to make a candid and contemporary rock album that set an optimistic stage for what was lying on-deck. And though Running On Empty would become Browne's quarter-century meal ticket, it was no favorite to the hard cores who found commercial contrivance in its "rock-star-on-the-road" concept. Yet nearly three decades after its release, the remastered and repackaged live album sounds as innovative and unsullied as ever (complete with a DVD that includes audio of two previously unreleased songs from the era). Recorded on stage, on motel room furniture, and aboard the tour bus, the songs served as Browne's diary of a mad musician, including womanizing in Danny O'Keefe's "The Road," drugs in the Rev. Gary Davis' sermonette "Cocaine" and the enduring anthem of roadies and crowd adoration (and a Top 10 hit), "The Load-Out." Though Browne's commercial appeal would never again rise to this level, his legacy in his generation of popular music was sewn, and the record that put him there is still running on endurance. --Scott Holter

Recorded onstage, backstage, in three different hotel rooms, and on a Continental Silver Eagle tour bus during a cross-country 1977 tour, Running on Empty is a paean to life on the road. Jackson Browne's sense of camaraderie extended to the road crew, if "The Load Out," a love song to his roadies, is to be believed. Browne is much more blithe here than in his earlier outings. But Empty also represents a fleeting lighthearted moment for the singer-cum-poet whose concerns became more political than personal after its appearance. Beneath its flippant surface, this disc is a look at the lengths Browne and his friends went to avoid facing the demands of the touring life. What with the frequent drug references, misogynistic references to on-the-fly pairings with women, and the sobering line in the title track--"I look around for the friends I used to pull me through / Looking into their eyes, I see them running, too"--one realizes that Browne was much more comfortable on the road than off. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars A mirror of the seventies touring life..........2007-07-03

A great album...I haven't any doubt. This album may be considered as a crossroad of the seventies' life of many artists (such as The Eagles). For first, the touring life, wich means to travel along many thousand miles away from home and family. For second, the drugs (problem already reflected in the Eagles' album "Hotel California" of 1976). For third, the emotional mixture of happiness and pain. This album reveals an important message: To enjoy as much as possible the life's best moments, wich are usually very short and pass very quickly...Think about a live concert. When the live concert of your favourite artist is over you can always remember it as an emotional experience, you can listen to the records and watch videos..."and you wake-up in your town" (the final verses of "the load-Out"). By the artist's side things are different. He moves through many towns wich begin "to look the same". When the live concert finishes "is just another town along the road". The only moment of relax and happiness is when the artis plays his songs on the stage, like a dialog between him ad his public, his fans, his friends. The touring life has its lightly moments during these meetings with millions of friends through the world, who love his music "tonight the people were so fine"..."We just pass the time in our hotel rooms and wander'round backstage...TILL THOSE LIGHTS COME UP AND WE HEAR THAT CROWD AND WE REMEMBER WHY WE CAME!" (from the song "the load out"). The same aspect it may be found in te song "the road", wich reflect a static moment of the touring life, when "the load out" reflects a dinamic, a traveling aspect (driving all night to another town)of a rock band's life. The indicated songs are the main guideline to enjoy the album...The other songs speak by themselves...specially by guitar, piano and vocal performances. One thing is for sure: Jackson Browne in this album sings by his heart.
I own it on CD and recently I recovered my uncle's 30 years old vinyl, wich I cleaned as best as possible and this one actually I use to play, to sense the past nostalgic seventies feeling.

5 out of 5 stars REMASTER ????.......2007-04-11

Fantastic work again from Jackson! My main purpose for entering this "review" is to plead with the label for a REMASTERED version....

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2006-11-04

I've never been a huge Jackson Browne fan, but Running on Empty isn't bad. The best cuts are the title track, You Love the Thunder, Cocaine and Stay. But songs like Shaky Town, Rosie & Love Needs a Heart are fillers. You've got to give the guy credit for trying something new with the live album, too - none of these songs had been released on a Jackson Browne album up until this point, and it's a concept album about life on the road. Not half bad, but I can think of better singer-songwriters (cough cough Joni Mitchel)

4 out of 5 stars Running on Empty.......2006-06-30

A classic I will always remember and love to sing along to.

5 out of 5 stars the experiment succeeds.......2005-10-31

there aren't too many artists who have ventured into the arena of live/studio mixes, quite like this one. the only other one i can really think of is rattle and hum. and compared to that one, running is vastly superior. this is because running on empty is vastly superior to most any other album in its own right. it just capture life on the road and jackson's own coming of age story in a perfect, succinct expression of seventies rock and roll. a perfect balance of the intimate and the grandiose in rock music.

4 out of 5 stars DVD-AUDIO VERSION.......2007-03-09

A classic album re-mixed in to multi-channel sound. I find the mix subtle but suitable for the music of this disc. The overall sound depth and clarity is a definite step up from the regular CD.

5 out of 5 stars thanks - i'll have a refill........2007-01-28

I don't know what I was hoping to find when I got this dvd. But whatever it was, I was left with the feeling I had found something even more precious. It's the odd glimpse of genius at work - "yeah, we could do it like that", the depth you reach as he shares every breath with you, then takes yours away. And that's just the music. Most of all it's Jackson's intensity, passion and vulnerability exposed in the photos. He is surrounded by great people - musicians, friends, adoring fans. And yet he is alone, empty, the grail for unquenchable thirst. You want to be his fountain. Take another look at this beautiful man. Get to see where the music comes from.

4 out of 5 stars Sound, packaging great! But..........2006-12-19

There's not much more positive to say about this release that others haven't already said. The sound is crisp, packaging great, the bonus tracks on the DVD-Audio disc are fun to have after all these years.

However, I have one major complaint that I'm surprised no one else mentioned: this remaster edits out the first 29 seconds of the lead-off title track. Why on earth would you do that? For those who know the album those 29 seconds are of a restless crowd waiting for Browne and his band to start the show. On an album whose goal was to give a vivid picture of a musician's life on the road, that intro was a crucial lead-off. I can assume the edit was to make the track more immediate; but it strips the power out of the opening for the sake of pandering to America's increasing short-attention span.

If you can live with that edit, this version of the album is well, well, worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Delighted with this DVD-Audio disk.......2006-08-27

I'm not a Jackson Browne fan, in fact I don't own any of his other recordings. The songs are of course familiar from years of FM airplay. What makes this disk so enjoyable is the outstanding sound quality of DVD-A. The performances were excellent, much of which may not have been quite so apparent until now. I own ten DVD-A's and this disk is among the best of them in sound quality.

If you like classic rock in general and Jackson Browne in particular, go ahead and buy this disk for your DVD-A player. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars DVD-A : Running On Empty - simply awesome.......2006-06-30

It was worth the wait for the release, the sound quality for the album is fantastic. Crisp highs, excellent bass. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars This Fox isn't "Running On Empty"!.......2001-09-10

Diana Fox has a blow-up hit with this track! It's getting major play time on the radio and at the clubs. She sounds similar to Robin Fox("I See Stars")or Marsha("Castles in the Sky")with her vocoded-vocals. The DJ Infinity remix is a smokin' track because it has a rollin' beat and cool synth-efx, but all of the remixes are great! The lyrics in this song are easy-to-learn and they will make you want to sing right along with them. If you are a DJ, I highly recommend picking this single up. It will be a great addition to your CD coffin. If you are from my area, checkout the CD "Craker Jaxx" that includes the above mentioned remix of this awesome song. Bottom line, Don't Pass This One Up! If my review was helpful to you, then don't forget to vote. THANKS!
