The songs on Restless Soul offer lyrics of uncommon honesty and depth and speak eloquently to listeners everywhere. According to Charlie, "When you become specific, you become universal. You write about your own life and make your own observations. People who worry too much about appealing to everybody miss the point. If you write sincerely, and identify with the feelings of other people, you'll catch the ears of people who want to go beyond our accents or our points of view, whether they're inside or outside of Scotland." About the Restless Soul title, Craig adds that it reflects how the Reid brothers see themselves. "I think the song 'Restless Soul' is about myself and other people who can't chill out and just sit back and relax and not worry about the next thing," he says. "The album continues what we have done in the past--traditional song structures and varied subject matter--but the production is slicker," continues Craig before pausing. "I never thought I would have used those words to describe a Proclaimers album. More time was taken over the arrangements and it's a bit more controlled than previous albums." Restless Soul was recorded in London with producers Mark Wallis and David Ruffy, who have worked with the La's, the Smiths, U2, Talking Heads, Travis, the Go-Betweens, Rooster, the Ruts, Atzec Camera, Sinead O'Connor, Prefab Sprout, and Kirsty McColl. Craig and Charlie said, "We really enjoyed the experience, Mark and David were great to work with. Their technique for making the instruments sound big by recording them at a low volume was new to us and helped us develop as musicians in the studio. The atmosphere was very relaxed and we believe they got the best out of us and the other guys in the band." Joining the Reid brothers on the album are Stevie Christie on keyboards and accordion, Zac Ware on guitars and pedal steel, Ross McFarlane on drums, and Garry John Kane on bass.

my favorite twin tone SA album.......2006-06-26
MTBB starts w/ the only track on their greatest hits album "Tied to the Tracks." In my opinion it isn't the best on this album, but still has a great uptempo beat to it w/ that classic Dave scream.
"Ship of Fools" could be a ballad if slowed down, but I don't think the boys were quite ready for that, so instead they create an equally great tune w/ the message of the album I think "brokeness." I think the meaning is that the ship of fools is all the girls guys try to pursue that turn out to be just another mistake.
While "Can't Go Back," is a song about not going back through time, so you eventually will just waste time. It's just a great lesson about how time effects ones life w/ past experiences played by a great tune.
I think "Another World, Another Day" is basically the introduction to the rest of the album as it leads in hypnotic 2 minute festival of rock.
The title track has a quarky country upbeat aura to it which displays an almost rebellious side to Dave w/ the lyrics. "The rules were made to broken" chorus might attribute to that theory.
A good storytelling song that Dave perfects is in "Never Really Been." More or less telling us that what the future might be, if there was ambition.
"Whoa" is really just a nice scream fest saying well...um whoaaa
I'd say the closest song to the new sound later to follow soul asylum is "New Feelings" it sort of leaves that punk/raw feel, and just is a plain out rock song. Kinda short though.
I'm not sure what "Growing Pain" is really saying. Perhaps Dave is angry about something and needs to let out his frustration.
My favorite tune is "Long Way Home." Although rather a short list of lyrics, they are very meaningful. You get so far with something and realize it wasn't worth the time in the first place to do it, so then you have to go back home and start somewhere new.
Another 2 minute punk fest lies in "Lone Rider." More lyrics than "Whoa," and not as extreme, but rocks out.
The longest song, yes folks at 3min and 34 seconds is "Ain't That Tough" which has a great guitar beat, and good lyrics as well. Not as edgy or rough.
I'd put "Don't It (MYTSS)" before "Aint' That Tough" for the last song, but honestly this might seem out of place for this album, but nonetheless it still isn't bad.
Most devout fans should pick up this album, and most fans of the Columbia days should not, unless you do want to explore their roots such as I. What makes MTBB so great is that there is isn't just punk or just rock or just ballads. In fact there is a little bit of everything. There isn't exactly a "Runaway Train" type song on here seeing how most are under 3minutes and the album just being over 30 minutes or so. What's good is that you can put it on repeat and never get too extremely bored b/c each song is uniquely different. If you can get by some of Dave's screaming and catch all the lyrics some are simply mindblowing yet simple. A great album for 1986.
Rough 'n' rowdy...but is it ready?.......2004-04-10
But according to the band, Bob Mould was a valuable mentor to Soul Asylum while recording their first two albums, even if they did end up sounding like Husker Du. Soul Asylum was essentially a live act that tried to put their sound down onto tape. And even with Bob's studio experience, you just can't put a round peg in a square hole.
A majority of the songs are good, including Can't Go Back, Tied to the Tracks, and Whoah! But New Feelings and Lone Rider have only their attitude to stand on, and they almost don't hold up. Most of the guitar riffs border on overachievement and David Pirner is singing as if the world is coming to an end tomorrow and he won't have to worry about his vocal chords then.
So all things considered, Made to Be Broken's swaggering big sheet of noise is just one tiny step above Say What You Will, but a few notches short of While You Were Out and Hang Time. Only then would Soul Asylum learn how to work in a studio.
That stuff is hard.......2004-02-08
I was in a band in the mid to late 80's and I could barely focus on playing anything other than songs from MTBB and Hang time. These were unique albums in a way that the derivative post grave dancers' stuff cold never be.
And live they were even better!
R Williams from SF, CA has got it perfect...the decline of SA wasn't overnight and there were moments in each of the later albums (I tried for a long time to let them grow on me but couldn't get past the sugary sweet bit).
This one is from a time when they mattered!
classic album.......2002-12-27
Later fans may have trouble with older SA albums such as this, but this and While You Were Out capture a special time in Minneapolis and indie music that "college music"-oriented fans would no doubt appreciate. These are must-haves for any broad-range music collection.
Also, as a very enthusiastic fan of older SA, I find some redeeming aspects to ...And the Horse they Rode in On (some songs vaguely reminiscent of the 2 albums mentioned here) and even a few songs on Grave Dancer's Union, but after that, forget it. It was a slow, but steady descent, but MTBB is raw, fun, young, and inspiring.
The "Critic's Review" is WAY OFF!.......2000-06-17
Mould and Pirner may have been the original screaming but melodic pop punk frontmen, precursors to Cobaine. This album captures that totally, with sometimes mindblowing songwriting such as in "Tied to the Tracks" and "You Can't Go Back".

are all fire just to name a few. The only problem with the album was it had too many skits and it was too long. Almost 80 minutes. It literaly was 1 or 2 songs away from being able to be sold as a double disc. Even some of the greatest rappers ever had problems dropping a album with this long and with this many tracks(Jay-Z for example with The Blueprint 2). If they would have trimmed it down to about 60 minutes with the best 17 or 18 tracks it would have been a CLASSIC!

Not their best but even slightly above average Proclaimers is better than most other band's records.......2005-09-24
The Proclaimers have yet to put out a bad effort, but I would put this one in the category of "great" instead of "incredible". It's probably their second worst, behind Hit The Highway. While that may sound like criticism, it's not coming from me. I consider their first two albums, This Is The Story and Sunshine on Leith, along with their 4th and 5th, Persevere and Born Innocent, to be near perfect examples of great songwriting and singing.
The production on this one is a little slick, but after the raw Born Innocent, it's a nice change. The humor is still there, as are the catchy hooks.
In short, pick this one up, and give it 5 or 6 listens before judging it. Soon, you'll be singing along and wanting to see them live, where they really shine! Enjoy.

Not bad for an EP of leftovers.......2005-05-07
The cover has the same graphics and the synopsis written on the back is derived from the same writing style of whoever wrote the notes on the back of Whipped Cream and Other Delights. And the naked Karl on the cover doesn't really help you take them any more serisously. The weird thing was, Herb Alpert was the president of A&M at the time that this was released from Twin/Tone. The fact that Soul Aslyum signed a contract with A&M proves either one of two things: 1) Alpert didn't care or 2) he never noticed.
So on to the music: these are all things that got scrapped from the Hang Time album in 1988. And considering that everything here fell by the wayside during those sessions, this EP is pretty consistent (perhaps unintentionally so). P-9 is similar to Twidlee Dee, which probably explains its exclusion from Hang Time. Artificial Heart is probably the most experimental the band ever became with all the disjointed riffs and straightfoward vocal delivery from Dave Pirner. Take It To The Root is funk-racket. Secret No More and Just Plain Evil are pretty standard punk-pop from Minneapolis, but Chains should have made the cut for Hang Time.
All in all, not bad at all. But the artwork makes it all worthwhile. To me, it's a riot because I think Herb Alpert is/was a joke.

Well into his 30th year of recording, Eric Andersen picks up where his 1989 masterpiece Ghosts upon the Road left off. His 15th album was eight years in the making, pieced together from collaborations with Rick Danko, Richard Thompson, Benmont Tench, Howie Epstein, and Bob Dylan bassist Tony Garnier. It demonstrates the virtues of patient songwriting in sensual love lyrics, sprawling wanderer's laments, and Beat-poetry-inspired litanies of sins and ecstasies. "He thought of his mother / He thought of the automat / The space shuttle / Jersey cows and poison lollipops / As the dry heaves rose in his chest," he intones over a smoky, funky groove. Of all the folksingers to find their way out of the '60s, only Dylan and Joni Mitchell have remained as restless and provocative as Andersen. His imagination has grown ever more sure, his voice has become an unearthly, stately whisper, and his songs are still shapes by a singular, exceptional artistic will. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
