This is a true duet album, not simply a singer being backed by a stellar accompanist. Petra Haden's vocals, alone or with some judiciously deployed overdubbed harmonizing, move with a fluidity that is perfectly mirrored in Bill Frisell's guitar phrasing and sonorities. Playing covers (with a pair of originals) further celebrates the common ground they share. All of the songs are linked by their melodic bearing, whether originally performed by current bands like Foo Fighters and Colplay or such contemporary writers as Tom Waits and Stevie Wonder. They also looked beyond the realm of the rock world with twentieth century standard bearers George Gershwin and Henry Mancini. Drawing from jazz, folk, pop, and rock, this album bridges them all, tossing aside labels with the same gentle confidence that informs the music.

No one would have seen this coming, but it's as natural as loving a great album can be. Petra Haden renders the classic album, The Who Sell Out, in its entirety -- fake commercials and all -- and she does it a capella. She has a voice and sensibilities to make this work as she performs both the lyrics and components from the Who's instrumental tracks. It is the latter which is particularly affecting, her choices addressing how many fans of the original album would also identify a song's key characteristics. Townshend's guitar parts in particular are sung with virtuosity and unmistakable glee. Far from being a mere stunt, this set works on its own as well as giving one pause, reconsidering the original work in a new light. --David Greenberger

Album Description

One of the triplet daughters of legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden, Petra grew up in a world of music. At a young age, she developed a remarkable talent to perfectly mimick the sounds of instruments she was hearing around the house from Captain Kagaroo to the Cocteau Twins. She developed complex arrangements in her head and could interpret all sorts of songs. Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out is the latest chapter in the always provocative, often unpredictable yet never less than fascinating musical career of Ms. Haden. The impetus for the project came from her friend, bassist mike watt, who suggested that she attempt to re-imagine this classic Who album as an a capella tour de force (this at least a year before any news of Bjork's Medulla leaked to the press). He gave her an 8 track cassette tape with the original Who album recorded onto one track and the other seven empty, for her to fill with intricate vocal harmonies reinventing not only all The Who's singing and instrumental parts - including drums - she also recorded all the mock radio commercials so integral to The Who Sell Out experience. The final result is a technical tour de force that highlights The Who's own achievement, bringing all the elements of chorale music, vaudevillian schmaltz and Renaissance chamber ensemble playing powerfully to the fore.

2 out of 5 stars not so hot........2006-08-17

this is just another chick with no original songs of her own trying to ride on the coatails of a great band. a few songs were ok sounding but in all it's a weak attempt at a classic who lp. it also figures that this is the daughter of a famous composer. these people usually are related to someone in the biz who can easily get them studio time instead of a true talented unknown who will never get opportunities like this.

5 out of 5 stars Petra Haden sings Who Sell Out.......2006-08-15

Sell Out is my favourite album by The Who so it was fascinating to hear an acapella version . This is truly brilliant. Hats off to Petra!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Tribute to a Classic Album.......2006-03-16

Sell Out was one of the first Who albums I got 25 years ago and have loved it since. It's still my favorite of the lot. I read about this album on Pete Townshend's site and decided to give it a try. The samples here don't do most of the tracks justice and this sounds like a very well-studied tribute to the original Sell Out. In fact, I found myself filling in the parts that were missing while I was listening to it in the car. Which brings up a point... Yes, there are some parts that were dropped (like the final "Heinz Baked Beans" tag on that track and the subdued intro for "I Can See For Miles"), but I supposed when you record 9 or 10 vocal tracks yourself, it's hard to remember everything.

I can see how some of the fans of mainstream a capella music would be disappointed. I would imagine that this would appeal more to fans of Todd Rundgren's "A Capella" album than to fans of Take 6 or any of those groups. Luckily, I fit into the former category.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful rendition of the Who.......2006-02-17

Excellent A Capella version of the old favorites. Petra's voice brings a new verve to both the dated and the old favorites.

Her "percussion" backing is effective, although not up to the standards of "The Wise Guys", "Die Prinzen" or "Les Swingle Singers". But these groups have years of experience at being human percussion.

5 out of 5 stars Initially Speechless.......2005-11-17

Received a taped copy across a bar from a friend in an unmarked brown envelope saying "You'll understand". Played it and
yes I do! As a Who fan and fan of the unusual this is FANTASTIC, even forked out for my own copy !........ enjoy !

4 out of 5 stars Good enough to want what could be better.......2007-01-13

I've been listening to Bill Frisell for years. Some of his "doodles" and "zigzags" don't appeal to me, and some of his blues rock doesn't stand out from the crowd, but his country/folk and ambient work (e.g. "Family) sets his music off into the realm of "art."

So it was my search for more Bill Frisell art that led me to this collaborative effort with Petra Haden. I like the album. Petra's vocals are good but not great. It has made me itch for a more satisfying piece of art.

I'm waiting for Bill to line up a different vocalist(or set of vocalists). Petra, do you have the vision and ability to put out another album that exceeds what you've done here with Bill?

2 out of 5 stars Didn't make it for me.......2006-03-21

I enjoy both Petra Haden's voice and Bill Frisell. In this case, the combination of several weak songs and few suprises on the stronger material combined to make this a disappointment. I could see what they could be getting at, but I was underwhelmed.

3 out of 5 stars Early Petra Haden.......2006-02-17

A sweet, pure, voice, singing songs which bring out Petra's fresh qualities. A little reminiscent of Hailey Westnera's Pure. Hopefully this is a springboard to more mature quality as she goes beyond this and "The Who sell out"

5 out of 5 stars Simply gorgeous.......2005-12-09

This music is simply gorgeous. Petra Haden's vocals remind me a bit of those of Elizabeth Fraser of the (equally sublime) Scottish band, the Cocteau Twins, though perhaps a more Americanized sounding version. Here she puts her vocal talents to very good use, with extraordinary input from the great musician Bill Frisell. The combined effect makes for a wonderful, warm, continuously listenable recording, one I will be listening to for years to come. I particularly like their take on "I don't want to grow up," a song the Ramones rocked; here, the song is rendered into a lullaby.

3 out of 5 stars She's good... but not great.......2005-10-29

Petra Haden has a lovely voice, but then, so do thousands of other singers out there. What she doesn't have is a unique style, or a way of interpeting music that makes you say yeah, that's Petra Haden, the way you might say hey, that's Sinatra, or that 's Sarah Vaughn.

The choice of songs is ecelectic, you might say, in that there's no unifying theme. Frisell is always brilliant, but here he's mainly just an accompanist- something he does as brilliantly as his solo work- but it's not the sort of unique style that might draw someone to a Frisell record.

What we're left with is a collection of pop songs done more than competantly, but in a way that just left we wondering why they bothered.

Petra Haden's uncanny vocal harmonies and graceful violin are two of the best about That Dog, a Los Angeles pop combo also featuring her twin sister Rachel. On her first solo project Petra loops together interlocked vocal strings that "ahh," "la-aa" and "tra-la-la" in such a childishly engaging manner that it'll melt years of cynicism off your slimy trunk. Primarily an a capella venture, Imaginaryland pops in a few numbers where Petra plays violin and viola, as on her father's slippery composition "Song for the Whales" and on a cover of Enya's "Watermark." Even though most of the album has the feel of a hypercreative kid bubbling away into a tape recorder between classes, Petra is obviously well-schooled (her father is Ornette Coleman bassist Charlie Haden), as her take on a Bach choral piece and the transofmraiton of her bouncing-ball vocalese into alluring and hypnotic madrigals ably demonstrate. If your eardrums (and patience) wear thin from too many guys with guitars, Imaginaryland could be the aesthetic panacea you've been looking for. --John Chandler

This is a refreshing musical masterpiece taking the listener on a refreshing and wondrous journey through time and sound. If you are tired for the "same old, same old", this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars A sweet album by a sweet girl........1999-02-23

I've never written a review for anything but here it goes... Imaginaryland is one of those albums you want to listen to the whole way through. Petra has a beautiful voice and uses it very well in her album. It struck me as a very sentimental album and those are always the best. Something your ears will thank you for. I hope she does another one cause it's really quite beautiful.

Violinist Petra Haden and accordionist Miss Murgatroid (née Alicia Rose) make a startling duo. Rose's accordion sounds church-organ big in some parts and then like the fiercest '60s-era electric keyboard in others, while Haden, formerly of That Dog (and the daughter of jazz bass virtuoso Charlie), wields a beautiful tone, terse but rich. Certainly some of the unrest originates in Rose's unorthodox take on her instrument, which she plays with a touch of Pauline Oliveros's sense of tuning and intonation but a far larger sense of volume and intensity. Her sounds, elongated or clipped, gritty or soaringly clear, are aided by an array of pedals and effects. It's far more than intriguing and much more intense than intimate. This is a wonderful recording. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ptitchitza likes it wilder.......2002-03-21

Miss Murgatroid's approach to accordeon playing is the most adventurous since Kimmo Pohjonen (a brilliant Finnish musician). The entire CD is adventurous in concept and pleasant in execution. Personally, I would prefer more "drama" in the music - the mood of the CD is too uniform for my taste to fully enjoy its 40 minutes of playing time.

5 out of 5 stars right circumstances.......1999-12-06

I wouldn't expect many people to understand this sort of record. It's not party music, or music for kids who have been so brainwashed they think that Korn is Kool. It's meditative music--would have been revolutionary twenty years ago. It's trance-setting, watch your mind music that you can't expect entertainment from. Granted, that sort of thing isn't dominating the charts, but that's not the intention. You see, music lovers of the world, not everyone wants to be on the top 40 having Kasey Kasem spew out their name along with some anecdote about their lost kitten. Some people (gasp!) make albums of music they like, without worrying too much about what anyone thinks.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Journey through expression.......1999-09-24

This is by far the best of the Miss Murgatroid series. We now can see her true beauty complemented by the amazing vocals of Petra. This chilling work is a must for any avangarde music lover. The duo reaches deep within your soul and reveals this hidden place inside, so warm, so soft, so comfortable, you'll return again and again. Thanks Miss Murgatroid and Petra, the world is a better place for having you in it.

1 out of 5 stars pretty lame.......1999-09-06

i had a number of people recommend this cd to me, and so i thought it would be worth checking out, since i had to be out of town when murgatroid/haden performed at a local venue. the cd turned out to be an incredible disappointment. petra haden's violin playing is excellent, and it's obvious she's inherited some of the talent of her father. but why she would want to play with the talentless murgatroid is a mystery. lots of drones and repetition on cd, performed not very interestingly. maybe that's your thing, but sure isn't mine.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars pretty good, actually.......2004-05-14

it certainly seems like an evil alliance: a vocalist/violinist known for her quirky pop sensibility and rather unspectacular voice and a guitarist known for doing as much genre-bending as any artist since john zorn (who he played with). but they pulled it off.

now admittedly this album isn't for everyone. it requires a sort of melancholy mood. but it's perfect for those late night relaxations after a long day at work.

i especially like the cover of coldplay's 'yellow' (a song which i never really liked until i heard this version). also the version of stevie wonder's 'i believe' is spectacular. these two artists have put their own spin on these songs. their originality rivals the recent johnny cash cover albums (r.i.p.).

i recommend this disc. it's a good one.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent effort.......2003-12-10

This is another winning performance from Bill Frisell. Petra Haden is the nominal leader here, and the album reflects her musical personality. It is superior to her earlier solo effort, which had some very nice pieces but was almost too esoteric for extended listening. Frisell has accompanied singer/songwriters on numerous projects over the last few years, but this is his best work in that regard. The album has a very intimate quality that works well with the songs chosen. Their version of "Moon River" is the first I've heard to re-capture the girlish innocence portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast At Tiffany's."

These songs are all meant for the singing. They have sharp lyrics and they have memorable melodies. Each one is better than the best song in Rent, Wicked or The Flower Drum Song. I implore you to buy this album or fund a starving child, but please do one or the other.

5 out of 5 stars In the Year 2685 ... Pataphors, Fun and a Nod to Bowie.......2007-04-27

The title track of this 2007 debut begins with Avion singing: "Pop Music United ... This ain't genocide," which kicks-off the album's quasi-Orwellian futuristic themes. (As well as the nod to Bowie that runs through this terrific little collection of songs.)

If there is one message embedded in the music here, it is of unity and peace, as well as vivid imagination. The inside jacket, which features vivid portraits of Los Angeles in the year 2685, contains cryptic messages in a bright green computer font and apparently alien language. One such message reads: "Peace 2685." Possibly an ironic mention of how long today's various world peace processes may take. Or perhaps world peace is an actual event embedded in these songs.

(The penultimate track, "War is Over: Resolution Year 2685", begins with trumpets and cheers, indicating a more specific storyline may be at play.)

    - "Story of Life" is a spacey bossa nova number that recalls the heyday of mod jazz, with a wicked-sounding, jazzy solo at the end that makes this seem like a song that resides firmly in the present, not some archaic past.

    - "Have You Seen the Walking Dogs on Sunset?" is a tripped-out, country-fied number with hoots and hollers that vaguely recall Jimi Hendrix's lonesome blues-hippie odyssey, "My Friend."

    - And "Yes, I Wonder" (with its John Lennon-esque doo-wop vocals), "Stand-In" ('80s pop, with harsh lyrics to a camp counselor) and the title track are bona fide catchy classics.

All-in-all, this is an exciting record that shows that Mr. Avion is a promising talent indeed.

(It also stars Tanya Haden, who performed on The Silversun Pickups' Pikul EP.)

You might be interested to know that Paul Avion is also the creator of the pataphor.

And if you don't know what the pataphor is yet, start Googling the web, where you'll find a growing cult of art surrounding this concept, from poetry to short films.

According to their MySpace page, in summer (2007) Paul Avion & Band will be playing shows with a new band, which should help this CD acquire the attention it deserves.
