Customer Reviews:
Liked it, could have been better.......2007-06-15
Some of it seems a bit like filler, but overall it's a great addition to the Styx/Dennis DeYoung fan.
MUCH Better Than I Thought It Would Be.......2007-06-05
I've been a Styx fan since "The Grand Illusion" days in 1977. From that album on, not only did I buy their next few albums, but I also purchased their earlier albums, also. What a tremendous musical legacy the Styx lineup of the 70s and 80s has left us.
I can only imagine that those who gave this CD a bad review didn't actually listen to it. If you like the Styx of old, the Styx songs on this album are especially terrific:
"Lady" - beautiful piano & vocal
"Eine Klein Nachtmusik/Lorelei" - brilliant, especially the transition between the songs
"Light Up" - great
"Babe" - tremendous vocal
"Show Me the Way" - perfect acapella harmony
"Castle Walls" - ideal use of the symphony
"Don't Let It End" - really good all-around performance
"Mr. Roboto" - same quality as the original studio version
"Rockin' the Paradise" - good performance
"Black Wall" - heartfelt and powerful newer song, dedicated to veterans
"Desert Moon" - gives me chills, just like the original studio version
"Suite Madame Blue" - awesome (my high school band played this song, one of my favorites)
"Best of Times" - really good ballad
"Come Sail Away" - good song, though the sing-along is somewhat distracting
As other reviewers have mentioned, Dennis's voice is amazing on this album. He was 56 or 57 years old when these performances were recorded, and his voice sounds as good as it did 30 years ago. What an amazing feat!
The only disappointment for me on this album is the performance of "Grand Illusion," because Dennis definitely turns the song into a Vegas show-tune. Also, I consistently skip over some of the non-Styx stuff, like the songs from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Other than those, this album is nearly flawless.
I don't know all the behind-the-scenes drama between Dennis and the other members of Styx. And Dennis may be the biggest egomaniac in music; I don't know. All I know is that Dennis's voice is remarkable, his backup singers are great, the musical performance of most of these songs is brilliant, and this CD is worth $20. Now, if Dennis would only come play a concert in Kansas City!
It doesn't get more pretentious than this!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-05
Yes, now there are TWO different CD releases that feature symphony orchestras playing the generic, overblown music of Styx. Can you imagine what it would be like to devote your life to playing really complex, subtle classical music, only to wind up playing power chords behind Dennis DeYoung's massive ego?!! It must have been a dehumanizing experience for all of those musicians. Hiring an orchestra to play Styx songs is like hiring a great artist to paint your garage!
What a surprise!.......2007-01-21
I had been a huge Styx fan back in my teenage years, and was terribly disappointed when they broke up. I was especially sad to hear that there was apparently bad blood between the members, so a reunion didn't seem to be in the cards. I knew Dennis DeYoung had been the driving force behind the music but since I had liked ALL the members in the band, I was skeptical when my husband got me this disc as a gift. I initially listened to it thinking it would be Styx elevator music. Boy was I wrong!! It is incredible! I had to check the cover just to make sure I hadn't accidentally put in an old Styx disc. It is definitely as powerful as the original band. I left thinking, "Were there actually other guys in this band?" While there are several cuts of Dennis' solo accomplishments, most of the disc is the music of Styx. I love this disc!
Deyoung At His Best.......2007-01-13
After Deyoung was kicked out of Styx he went back to doing solo shows. He and his 6 piece band eventually started performing with various symphony orchestras around the country. This album is a one take performance recorded at the Chicago Theater in Chicago with a 40 piece orchestra and chior. The majority of the album consists of Styx material, but he does throw in a few solo songs as well, along with two new tracks. If you liked Deyoung in Styx you will probably love this CD. The performance is strong throughout and Deyoung's voice is flawless. He has not lost an iota of range as have many of his contemporizes. The orchestra works well for the most part. Deyoung is wise enough to pull out some of his more prog-oriented material for which the orchestra is a perfect fit. "Grand Illusion", "Suite Madam Blue", "Come Sail Away" and especially "Castle Walls" all are outstanding. The album also features two guest vocalists on tracks from Deyoung's musical "Hunchback Of Notre Dame". These tracks are very Broadway / opera - ish in nature, so if you are looking for a pure rock album they might put you off, but they are both done very well. Deyoung also includes a few tracks from his solo albums with the Vietnam anthem "Black Wall" and his solo hit "Desert Moon" being standouts. There are 3 new studio tracks included. "Hello God" sounds like he might be taking a stab at Christian rock and is a decent tune. "Goodnight My Love" is typical Deyoung shmaltz, but "My God Can Beat Up Your God" is a keeper. All of the big Styx hit are here "Lady", "Lorelei", "Light Up" (done partially in a reggae style), "Babe", "Don't Let It End", "Mr. Roboto", "Rockin The Paradise", "Best Of Times", and a cool a capella version of "Show Me The Way". Some of Deyoungs in between song chatter gets a bit corny at times, and some of the ballads are pure cheese, but overall this is a very good live album for fans of Styx and Deyoung.
