In the opening seconds of this solo outing, former Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness peels off the line like a Chevy hotrod. Combining gritty punk attitude, honky-tonk toughness, and rockabilly swagger, Ness spins tales of depravity ("Crime Don't Pay," "Ballad of a Lonely Man") that would be downright depressing if they weren't so foot-tappingly catchy. A world-weary tough guy--equal parts Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Rotten--Ness is a true homegrown talent, combining his trademark growl and wire-taut guitar playing with dramatic, captivating storytelling. Appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Brian Setzer, and members of the Royal Crown Revue add to this record's already formidable mix, but Ness is really the star, proving at every turn that there can be life after punk without coming anywhere close to selling out. --Donovan Finn

5 out of 5 stars A great solo cd for Mike.......2007-01-25

I LOVE Social Distortion! I didnt think Mike Ness could have done it solo but I was wrong. This is a GREAT cd! If you love Social D, you will love this cd!

3 out of 5 stars MIKEY CONFESSIONS.......2007-01-03

Another musical face of Social Distortion leader, composer and front man. Sad, sometimes depressive and naturally filled with the rebel lyrics for which Ness feels so much passion and spiritual afecction. Only for Social Distortion fans...

3 out of 5 stars its not my thing..........2006-06-14

being a social distortion fanatic at one time, i picked this up at a used record store...now i knew it was going to be more country, jazzy, and classic rock-ish, but i was expecting something like "somewhere between heaven and hell" i suppose. i mean i respect mike ness' influences and his music, but this solo effort isnt my cup of tea...don't think twice is awesome though!...i would like to see him use this johnny cash/rockabilly inspired country to make some killer social distortion albums such as their early 90's albums...to me, this sounds very choppy much like the clash's sandinista.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Crap.......2005-10-03

I've never really heard too much of Social Distortion's music, but stumbled upon this album by way of Hank Williams III's message board so I'm quite partial to the cover of Hank Sr.'s You Win Again. This is quite possibly the perfect album. It seems to be the soundtrack to damn near everyone's life. It holds so many different emotions and moods in just 15 songs. You can't not love this album. It's just not possible.

5 out of 5 stars Grows on you. Recap.......2005-09-12

My son (age 15) heard that Mr. Ness was an extremely decent singer/songwriter and this cowpunkbilly release was worth having a listen. He bought it on vacation this summer at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (! ) in Cleveland. It hasn't come out of his player since than. And I, as a second hand listener, have come under the spell. Highly recommended.
