5 out of 5 stars I simply love it. Cyndi Lauper rocks!!.......2007-05-27

this is her best album in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars An essential.......2007-05-21

One of the greatest female artist albums of all time, in the pop/rock genre. I have never tired of listening occasionally. (The haunting "Time After Time" is one of my favorite tunes of all time).

Nicely remastered and there are 3 bonus tracks of live performances of songs that are on the original album playlist: "Money Changes Everything", "She Bop", and "All Through The Night". I prefer the studio versions, but they are on there too. If you are not familiar with this album, I'll just say that there's something there for everyone. Not much "filler" here.

The original recording quality was exceptionally strong in my opinion, and I'm not quite sure if this reissue is of that level. But it seems to be quite good and this is certainly a 5 star product.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Cyndi Just Wants To Have Fun On Her Debut Album.......2007-04-29

This is Cyndi Lauper's debut album, released in December, 1983. This album catapulted Cyndi into stardom with such hits as "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "She Bop" and "Time After Time". As of 2002 & counting, it has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. The album peaked at #4 on the U.S. Billboard pop albums chart. With a series of quirky videos, Cyndi dominated MTV for several months. Her bizarre fashion, consisting of multiple layers of thrift store clothing and dozens of accessories, influenced fashion for the last half of the 1980s. "She's So Unusual" received mixed reviews on it's release (it's sole Grammy was for Janet Perr's Album Package). In recent years, however, the album has been re-appraised by the music media, and songs like "Time After Time" are considered pop classics. In 2003, the album was ranked number 494 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Highlights include every song, especially the first six. The three live bonus tracks, even make it more special.

P.S. - Better late then never.

Listening to this cd brought back fun memories.
This cd is one of cyndi's best.

5 out of 5 stars Still Cyndi's best............2007-02-19

I'll never forget the first time I heard "Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)" It was 1983 and I was just out of Junior High. I thought it was a bit cheezy at first but then it grew on me. Still does, in fact. Then I bought the cassette. When I heard "Money Changes Everything" I was mezmoried. WOW! This album rocks. There were times when listening to the entire album a few times in a row was not unusual. So when it came time that I bought a cd player this was one of the first albums I got. All of the songs on here are classic 1980's. Even her little diddy "He's So Unusual" is great, complete with 1930's style. "Time After Time" still brings a tear to my eye with it's haunting backround and wonderfully sung vocals. This is Cyndi's defeying moment! But my favorite track has to be "She Bop" With it's classic 80's style synth and Bangles influencing chorus this track rocks. Way to go Cyndi. You have created a masterpiece!!

If Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual evokes memories dominated mostly by her cartoonish image, then try to get over it so you can pay attention to the music. Simply, Cyndi Lauper has a wonderful, emotive voice. Her vocals have an impish quality, but there's also tremendous strength, articulation, and nuance. Who would disagree that "Time After Time" (later covered by both Everything but the Girl and Miles Davis, if you need further proof of her credibility) is as heartstring-tugging as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is frivolous, or that "All Through the Night" is as longing as "She-Bop" is intense? The instrumental arrangements are quite inventive and rich, and although the musicality is pointedly '80s, the album sounds more winsome than dated. The title of Lauper's debut isn't self-deprecating or even self-parodying; it's self-congratulatory. Listen to it again, and you'll find this pleasure to be far from guilty. --Beth Bessmer

4 out of 5 stars SACD review.......2005-04-11

This is a terrific album that still holds up pretty well when played 20 years later.....but how I wish this SACD release was in multi channel format! It sounds terrific, but with some proper care, a 5.1 mix of this could be awesome. Alas, maybe one day someone will do it properly

5 out of 5 stars classic 80's.......2005-03-17

I believe the first time i heard this album I may have been 3 or 4, i dont remember. What i do remember is that i loved it. I remember dancing to "All Through the Night" & "She Bop". Hearing this cd again, now that im in my 20's really takes me back to the days of the 80s, when i was little, and music was good.

5 out of 5 stars In Love With This Unusual Artist.......2004-08-09

In 1980, Cyndi Lauper released an album with the band Blue Angel, which she led. In the US, it flopped. Then she was forced to quit because she lost her singing voice. Doctors didn't expect her to sing again. This almost shattered her dreams of success in music. In the following years, she proved them wrong namely in 1984. Those who know these events are amazed by her miraculous recovery as they listen to her sing.

When Cyndi Lauper released her debut album "She's So Unusual" and her first single "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", she instantly took the world by storm. She was often compared to Madonna, who was also newly emerging at the time. More than just her wild image and wild antics proved that she is a true work of art. Such quality led many critics expecting her to stay on top for many years. She later earned the Grammy for Best New Artist for 1984.

The wild pop music, which matches perfectly with her image, keeps listeners smiling through every note. Its funky and dance additions keep the music unique and timeless. Therefore, this is an album that capitalizes the 1980's. The catchy beats remain catchy today. Her throaty vocals blend perfectly with the theme and offers the added fun theme. She never loses her edge with any song as she sings odes (...), girl power, love, and more. Through the wildness, she rooms two ballads, which are performed beautifully: hit singles "Time After Time" and "All Through the Night". Despite the mellow theme, the emotional value never loses its touch.

Her overall musical quality have many fans looking beyond her image and crediting her rightfully as a true artist. "She's So Unusual" is the essential album for any Cyndi Lauper and/ or 1980's music fan. This will surely keep listeners dancing for many more years. Those interested in hearing a Cyndi Lauper update should also buy her 2003 successful release "At Last", which launched her as the biggest comeback of that year. This combination makes for great musical enjoyment.

3 out of 5 stars An Icon While She Lasted.......2004-06-19

Cyndi Lauper was indeed a poster child of the early 80's, and was indeed one of the women who changed the face of music. Her voice, while lacking in soul and sultriness, is of incredible range, and no one could ever sing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" like the Cyndi did with her thin, annoying, peachy voice. I do like her very much.

But I must say that Ms. Lauper has never been able to transcend her original comedy, and has never been able to reinvent, like another female icon of the early 80's, Madonna. While it is true that Cyndi possessed a vocal range Madonna could never reach, it is not completely fair to accuse Mrs. Ritchie of never being a good singer. Her voice was indeed at one time powerful and rich and dark, filled with African American influence, but lacking in octave capability (which came about later in the Ray of Light Era). Please do not compare Cyndi and Madonna, each has given their share in their own way.

Other than that, even though Cyndi has not been able to become an enduring Icon, she was still one once. And even though the spotlight has dimmed, Ms. Lauper has indeed retained her original punkiness and comedy.

5 out of 5 stars missing songs.......2000-11-07

I also have a request for "Goonies R' Good Enough", but does anyone remember "I've Got A Whole In My Heart (That Goes All The Way To China)" from the extremely rare Vibes soundtrack? It might be fun to hear the theme song to "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" also. I hope that Cyndi comes out with an even better boxset that includes those songs. This stuff is really good though.

4 out of 5 stars Nice package, but not the required box set.......2000-05-16

Someday there will be a proper box set of Cyndi Lauper material. In the meantime, this "three-fer" will suffice for most listeners. It features the two 80s releases that most of her fans know and love--plus an early 90s recording ("Hat Full of Stars") which deserves to be heard.

And of course, the price is right. But the lack of inclusion of anything from "Night to Remember" is disappointing. The rock-crit establishment has spread the word that Cyndi's third release is a one-star affair. In reality, it's a vocal tour de force, which leaned on the pop side (which I guess in some corners is anathema) but was a perfectly valid step for someone who considered herself first and foremost a singer.

The ideal box set would also pick up some of b-sides of her singles ("Heading for the Moon" would be a must, but also "Cold"), live tracks and yes, of course, "The Goonies." That'd be good enough for me.

4 out of 5 stars The Goonies???.......1999-02-26

This would be the Cyndi Lauper CD to get if only it included "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough," which is out of print and very hard to find!

5 out of 5 stars An trip in the time.......1999-02-02
