Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Best known for the infamous "Dinah-Mo-Hum"--a tale of sexual depravity and bovine perspiration--Over-Nite Sensation is a flawlessly executed collection of jazz-rock Frank Zappa classics. The seven-song set, which includes backup vocals by Tina Turner and the Ikettes, equally showcases Zappa's unique penchant for storytelling and the abilities of his studio-musician sidemen. Zappa's guitar work is also some of his finest, flaring up on "I'm the Slime," "Zomby Woof" and "Montana." --Andrew Boscardin

From the Label
Yes, this is the one with "Dinah-Moe Humm" on it....The first of a series of FZ's rock-jazz-guitar-horn-reed recordings to thrill hundreds of thousands of turntables worldwide and stun Rock Monsters everywhere until they were un-concho. "Montana" worked dental floss into the collective consciousness; "I'm the Slime" said all that needed saying about TV, and "Dirty Love" introduced those immortal sentiments, "the poodle chews it." Lest you think this one's all yuks, the Mothers at the time included the likes of George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty and Ian Underwood.

4 out of 5 stars "Goin' to Montana, goin' there soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon".......2007-07-25

This is one funny album. Totally tasteless, totally immature frat-boy/locker-room humor. But it's funny, so I could care less.
I have four absolute favorite songs on this album. First is I'm the Slime (oozin' out of your TV set...), which is a great protest against TV and the idiots who watch it. Zappa's satiric sense of humor is dead-on, and that's a great chorus! Another one I enjoy is Montana, with really funny, extremely weird lyrics that nobody but Zappa could come up with. Either this or I'm the Slime is my favorite song on this album, I'm not sure. Zappa gets a lot more raunchy with the X-rated riff rocker Dirty Love, with some disgusting lyrics ("A tacky pamphlet in yo' daddy's bottom drawer" is one of the milder lines), a great riff, cool backup vocals, and a hilarious ending that's totally perverted. NOT a song for family time. Neither is Camarillo Brillo, which takes on a similar perverted direction. I think this one would've gotten a lyrics sticker (lyrics stickers suck, by the way - so does censorship) had it been released today.
My issue with this album is that a couple songs don't get anywhere. The only tune I truly dislike (which translates to "hate with a passion") is 50/50 - vocalist Ricky Lancelotti ruins the song for me, because it's a mildly funny attack at budding pop stars otherwise. Zomby Woof is really a stupid song that gets nowhere, but it's not bad or anything: same goes for the infamous Dinah-Moe Humm, which has frankly offensive sexist lyrics that are not funny at ALL. But it's got a decent melody. And stupid sexist lyrics. The two cancel each other out, and we're left with a middling song. Zappa's band is, as always, dynamite, and the best lyrics here are a real trip, so while this isn't as great as the first few albums, it's a nice place to go when you've heard all of htem a million times over.

5 out of 5 stars "...past her fuming incense stencher...".......2007-07-25

This album is an astonishing piece of work. The arrangement, pacing, vocals, song selection, everything on this CD is rock music at its finest.

Zappa was a musical genius and it shows in spades on this album. The tragedy is that essentially none of these cuts received any amount of commercial air play. Compared to most songs that get saturation air play every 10 minutes these seven are nothing less than golden nuggets of musical brilliance. Zappa's lyrics are at times funny, intelligent and witty, and his timing is always perfect. He seems to know exactly when the appropriate moment is to interject his legendary guitar play into various sections of these tracks.

I own seven other Zappa CDs with this one easily being one of the best. Of course he has such an eclectic catalogue that it's impossible to single out one particular album as his best work. Over-nite Sensation is definitely in the top five.

3 out of 5 stars A tad too explicit........2007-07-24

I was tremendously fond of this album when it was released. "Camarillo Brillo" and "Zombie Woof" had great humor and fit the times. "Movin' to Montana" still plays in my head. The performance by the accomplished jazz players here is daunting and arresting. Still, the lyrics are at times way to obvious and you don't want to play this when your young kids are listening. It's hard to be credible about sexual responsibility when your playing this album, but hey,I expect many people would find this tame today. I agree with others that Zappa was reaching for the main stream with this effort and he new that "sex sells"; so give them a healthy doze of what they want. The disc exudes a strong cynicism that shouts "Frank Zappa". Probably it is his most accessible work.

5 out of 5 stars Nowhere near a sellout, just a contiunation of the brilliance..........2007-06-04

In a career of brilliant work, some Zappaphiles have called this album a blatant sellout. This is preposterous. This is not a sellout by any stretch of the imagination. It's simply Zappa, one of the most prolific and greatest musicians ever to exist in the US or the world, reinventing himself. There is not one song here that can be called a blatant attempt at top 40 airplay. Every song here display Zappa's sense of humour, sense of satire, and intricate musicianship. My favorites are I'm the Slime (which is still valid today), Caramillo Brillo, and the Zappa classic Dinah Moe-Humm. It's taken a while for Dinah to grow on me, but it has. Zappa once said that thanks to songs like Dinah (and Don't Eat the Yellow Snow and T***ies and Beer), he managed to get enough cash to make his orchestral work (the LSO album in particular). So the album was a hit, but it's still Zappa. It can't be mistaken for anyone else. This is great stuff, yet one more great album in the Zappa universe.

5 out of 5 stars masterwork.......2007-05-12

It is a pure masterwork, and also a very good introduction to Zappa's music. The band at this period is at its best, the repertoire is fantastic : to get immediately !

5 out of 5 stars Taking the long road.......2007-02-25

Ruthie Foster shows the full range of her musicianship on this remarkable recording, which captures not only her rich voice but her wonderful sense of humor and love for music that stretches over a broad range of genres. Whether playing on a tango theme or drawing from her wonderful dip bag of folk music, Ruthie never fails to please the listener, especially on this album.

5 out of 5 stars If you can see her live, then: get! If not..........2006-12-04

...then you owe it to yourself to buy this album. You won't miss her on stage again: expect goose bumps, and maybe some damp eyes, just listening to the CD. This is one of the best live recordings -- of anyone -- that I have heard. Buy it now, as the first in your collection, and you can tell your friends later: "Ruthie Foster? Oh yeah, I know her music!"

5 out of 5 stars The Best!!.......2005-06-15

Ruthie Foster is THE BEST pure singer I have ever heard. When she sings Walk On and/or Oh Susannah - chills...
I absolutely LOVE HER - not only her singing but her guitar playing also. Check out/download her video at Kerrville from the internet and see her perform. A genius who can sing anything: blues, folk, whatever. I LOVE her - she is my favorite singer. Both her Stages and Runaway Soul albums- whew!!
Wish she would perform on national TV...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Transcendently Beautiful!.......2004-11-11

A couple of weeks ago on a stiflingly sultry afternoon at the Texas Book Festival I heard in the distance this incredible voice singing the old Curtis Mayfield song, "People Get Ready." I moved quickly toward it and caught the last two minutes of Ruthie Foster's one hour set at the Entertainment Tent. In those two minutes, the gritty spirituality of her bluesy gospel rendition of that classic gave me the chills, and, I confess, watery eyes. She shook me. I told my wife that she was the greatest singer I had ever heard, and I'm not sure that I would qualify that even now. I ordered two of her CD's as soon as I could get to the internet and Amazon.com. The studio produced "Runaway Soul" is truly great, and I highly recommend it, but "Stages" is as close to perfection as any human has a right to expect. I agree with the other reviewer. It's the best live CD I own, with the possible exception of "James Brown at the Apollo!" Her rendition of "Oh, Susana," is revelatory. Foster discovers beneath the hokey joy of the tradition tune a transcendently beautiful lament. It is a shockingly insightful performance. Haunting. I could go on and on about other great numbers on the CD, but won't. Just buy it and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Stages is Awesome.......2004-08-09

This is simply the best live album I have heard! Having seen Ruthie Foster live at the Canmore Folk Fest - Stages stays true to her performance and gives the listener insight in to the fabulous range and style of Ruthie Foster - highly recommended.

THE YESTON AND KOPIT STAGE VERSION IS NOTHING LIKE LEROUX'S NOVEL, BUT THE MUSIC WAS WONDERFUL! WITH HITS LIKE MELODIE DU PARIS, HOME, AND YOU ARE MUSIC THIS VERSION WOULD BE A GREAT OPPONENT TO ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER! TOO BAD HIS CAME OUT FIRST SO NOW EVERYONE IS BIASED TO IT...ANYWAYS, THIS VERSION IS VERY ENJOYABLE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

5 out of 5 stars Phantom.......2007-02-19

This is a great musical! It is too bad it rarely shows. The songs are great too!

Melodie de Paris - It has a smooth melody that rocks back and forth! It truly is the "Melodie de Paris"

Paris is a Tomb - This one has a dark melody to it. It is not my favorite one on the CD.

Dressing for the Night - This one is jumpy. It's like a fun-filled melody.

Where in the World - This was a good song! This is one of my favorite songs on the CD! The Phantom was looking for a girl with a nice voice.

This Place is Mine - This is a another jumpy song. Carlotta's voice is a little animated. I think it is just part of her role.

Home - This is my 2nd favorite! It has a smooth melodie that just makes you want to sing along with it!

Phantom Fugue - This song is fast. I find this one really fun to listen to!

You Are Music - This one has a nice melody to it. It didn't hit #1 though.

The Bistro - This is my 3rd favorite! "Sing!" has a nice melody. It doesn't last long. "Paree is a Lark" is sung by Carlotta. It is the same animated voice. "Melodie de Paris (reprise)" is just as nice as the first "Melodie de Paris"!

Who Could Ever Had Dreamed Up You - This song is #4 on my list. Phillipe didn't really thrill me. I liked Christine's part though!

Without Your Music - This would have to be #5 on my list. Richard White (The Phantom) does good for this song! There is nothing wrong with it!

My True Love - This is one of the #1's on my list! I love the melody. I listen to this one all the time!

My Mother Bore Me - I love the melody in this one! This is another #1 on my list!

You Are My Own - This is obviously, the last #1 on my list! It is a nice song. It is also sad because Erik is dying. Gerard is telling Erik how he is his father.

You Are Music (reprise) - This is the song where Erik dies. This is the saddest song on the CD. It is another #2 on my list.

This is a great CD! I highly recommend it! If I could, I would give it more than 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars It Was Okay.......2005-10-19

I bought this on a wing, hoping a little more than I got. I saw the women for Christine as Mariane Paroo in THE MUSIC MAN at Bass Hall, and loved her. So I looked at her biography and saw this. I bought it and was a bit dissapointed. The music is good, but not exactly memorible. So if your wanting a change from Webber, this is the thing to get. If your expecting spmthing close to Webbers version, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A truly excellent musical.......2005-09-09

It is a shame to learn that Kopit and Yeston purchased the rights to the Pantom of the Opera but were usurped by Andrew Lloyd Webber as it was in the public domain in Enland. Otherwise, we would have this marvelous music to listen to as much as we now listen to Webber's work. In a way we are fortunate that Webber's work can be heard as well as Yeston's work as the latter was allowed to publish in the US. Still, it is sad to realize that the public mainly ignores this work as they think first, that it even exists and second, that it is inferior to the Webber's work. The fact is that Phantom is excellent in its own right and has great songs such as "Home", "Melodie de Paris" and "Who Could Have Dreamed Up You". I highly recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Another Phantom.......2005-08-17

I'm quite happy with this masterpiece. Glad to hear something different than Webber's Phantom.

5 out of 5 stars The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

5 out of 5 stars A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

5 out of 5 stars I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Just as great as I remember. It was a replacement as my original got lost. Great service from Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar-Driven, Innuendo-Laden Hard Rock.......2007-07-05

George Lynch's sonic guitar work leads the charge of Lynch Mob's "Wicked Sensation" album. I got this disc way back when it first came out and it quickly became one of my favorite hard rock albums. The title track and "All I Want" are two of the most obvious sex-tinged rockers you'll run into from the early 90's. "Dance of the Dogs," "She's Evil But She's Mine" and "Hell Child" are all excellent rock tunes as well. "Rain," "Sweet Sister Mercy" and "Through These Eyes" are especially good and highlight Oni Logan's vocals.

The entire album is a wonderful treat from the era that Grunge killed. If you've never heard it before, I highly recommend you check it out. Fans of Dokken, Motley Crue, and Skid Row will definitely enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars George Lynch!!!!.......2007-04-09

Besides being a mega Dokken fan,Lynch Mob is right up there. Bought this album for the first time on cd and it rocks!!!! Standouts are ,"Wicked Sensation","River of Love","Sweet Sister Mercy","Hell Child","Dance of The Dogs" and "For A Million Years".Too bad,the album wasn't a smash, because it should have.Lynch is great!!! One of the most underrated guitarists ever,in my opinion. If you are a big fan of Dokken or for that matter,George Lynch, pick this one up.It will amaze!!! Brings back great memories.
Long live Hair rock!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Lost Gem.......2007-02-08

I picked this up just yesterday on CD but actually had bought it on Cassette when it first came out in back 1990. This album as a whole is really good so I'm surprised that it didn't do better than it did. My personal favorite tracks are "Wicked Sensation" which I believe there was a video for), "Sweet Sister Mercy", "All I Want", "Dance Of The Dogs", & "No Bed Of Roses". So if you like "Dokken" or just like heavy blues rock 'n roll, do yourself a favor and pick this up..the whole album is good. I might also add their second album simply titled "Lynch Mob" is pretty good as well, they do a killer version of "Queens" "Tie Your Mother Down" on that one.

4 out of 5 stars A good follow-up.......2007-01-17

A good follow-up to their debut album. If you mix the two albums together and play all the songs, you won't hear any difference.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun tunes for fun people.......2006-07-24

The Mel-Tones' "Surf Sensation" smacks of retro '60s surf culture. Each of the album's 33 tracks is a punchy little 2-minute surf vignette with a personality of its own. "Surf Sensations" boasts rollicking, uptempo rhythms, lush reverb guitar sounds, and the occasional gleefully shouted word. Highlights include "Kung Fu Saturdays," "Surfin' Natasha," and "Curl Rider Stomp." The music is vaguely reminescent of Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, but with a fresh new flavor. It occasionally strays from surf to spy, martial arts and spaghetti western, but all while maintaining the same distinct instrumental sound. Hard to believe the Mel-Tones hail from Canada, eh?

5 out of 5 stars Superb up-tempo surf.......2006-07-10

If you like up-tempo surf with a 60s flavor, along the lines of the Astronauts, and early Jon & The Nightriders, then you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another essential cd for the surf music fanatic!.......2006-03-29

I had to savor the content of this cd for a couple months before reviewing it. One thing for certain- you don't need to be living in California circa early 1960's to write/perform great surf music. The boys from Montreal are no exception in "Surf Sensation". Tracks such as Kung Fu Saturdays"," Breakers at Hanalei","The Last Papaya","Distant Shores", and "Cabo Del Cabo" are amongst my favorites. Excellent guitar melodies throughout accented with tasty trem picking, trem dives, muted arpegios, with the manditory drenching of Fender reverb! I don't proclaim you'll like all 33 tracks; you have to listen in order for them to grow on you. No words in the music to anoy or offend you. Surf Music-it's a good thing, very cool, and the Meltones/Surf Sensation is all that!!!

5 out of 5 stars immaculate surf tunes.......2004-10-11

If you are surfing amazon.com for some surf music gems to buy, you have found one right here! This is a stunning and exciting collection from these masters of surf guitar from Canada! The interplay between these two guitarists is incredible, showing a true mastery of the surf music sound. All the songs sound very vintage and totally authentic. Listen to this alblum and you are indeed transported back to the early 60's. This surf music has a darker, aggresive theme to the songs as you can hear from the samples. If you liked some of Dick Dales early surf music you will indeed love this alblum by the Mel-tones. I actually think these guys are better than Dick Dale! You will not find a better surf guitar alblum at Amazon.com, and I give my word on that.

1 out of 5 stars Where's The Irish Music?.......2007-07-21

This group is from Ireland but they aren't singing any Irish music, just
"New Age" music that gets quite boring.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever!.......2007-05-05

This long-awaited new addition to Anuna's discography is a major treat. The ensemble sounds better than ever, and the album's name "Sensation" is particularly apt for the selections on this recording. As always, Michael McGlynn's compositions and arrangements here are breathtaking and extraordinarily atmospheric as performed by this unique choral group. "Shining Water" is one of the most intoxicating tracks, with its hypnotic 5/4 motion and inclusion of recorded Cetlic harp played backwards in the background. "The Road Of Passage" is another major highlight, which has a soaring soprano solo and overlapping chords. The disk comes to a truly stunning close with "O Maria", a densely layered piece with a goosebump-raising repeating progression and electrifying embiance.

4 out of 5 stars Review of this album by All Music Guide.......2007-04-23

Sensation, the 10th album by Irish choral ensemble Anúna, brings together a wide assortment of music, all of it arranged or composed by its conductor, Michael McGlynn. While McGlynn's treatments may rankle purists, who, for instance, only want to hear Hildegard von Bingen performed by unaccompanied women's voices, when taken on its own terms, his cross-pollination of musical styles is never less than intriguing and is most often beguiling.

McGlynn's sophistication as a composer accounts for much of the album's appeal. The title track, featuring a speaker reciting an idyllic Rimbaud poem, accompanied by violin, harp, and women's chorus singing a sensual, impressionistic setting of the same text, vividly captures the serenity and eroticism of Rimbaud's imagery. McGlynn's setting of the medieval text Maid in the Moor Lay is disarming in its folk-like simplicity and purity. His O Maria is harmonically and texturally complex, but never sounds "difficult," and conveys an otherworldly and enveloping serenity. Other pieces, such as Silver River and Shining Water, bring a new age sensibility to the Irish folk tradition.

The other factor in making this album so sensually appealing and rewarding is the extraordinary technical prowess and secure musicianship of the singers. The ease and precision and musicality of their performances of extremely demanding music puts them in the ranks of the very finest chamber choirs. It would be a pleasure to hear them bring their formidable strength to the broader repertoire of exceptional (and exceptionally difficult to perform) choral music that is being written today.

Review by Stephen Eddins

5 out of 5 stars Musical Perfection..........2007-01-02

Anuna could sing the phone book and it would make me cry. Michael McGlynn is BRILLIANT; his arrangements are so, so rich and full...there's nothing like it.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!.......2006-11-10

At long last, Anuna returns with an album of all-new compositions by choirmaster Michael McGlynn. If you're viewing this item, chances are you're already familiar with Anuna's work, and this new album is definitely another masterpiece. The overall mood is quiet, meditative and enchanting. Some fans may miss the more energetic sound of songs like 'Salve Rex Gloriae' or 'Dicant Nunc' from past albums but the mystic mood throughout gives the album a cohesive sound which works perfectly. Top recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

In the weeks leading up to this album's release, Robert Plant was the unlikely hit at the South By Southwest music festival, delivering such a scorching set with his band the Strange Sensation rockers a quarter of his age simply got back on their planes and went home without playing a note. This can most likely be attributed to the fact that, unlike most his classic rock peers, Plant has rarely settled since moving on from the Led Zeppelin behemoth. Over the course of eight solo albums, he's experimented with doo-wop, synth-pop and even drum'n' bass. But it's only at 56 that the Golden God is hitting his stride. On "Tin Pan Valley," he sings, "My peers may flirt with cabaret/ Some fake the rebel yell/ Me, I'm moving up higher ground/ I must escape their hell." Mighty Rearranger draws out the best qualities of his otherworldly voice, surrounding it with rich Middle Eastern textures, soft blues accents and gorgeous psychedelic swooshes. It's in keeping with the spirit of 2002's exotic and lush Dreamland, only it sounds more refined. The quiet bits are quieter and the loud bits are timely reminders that Plant was once a man possessed by a dozen dead wolverines. He's not kidding when on "Shine It All Around," he sings, "These are the days of my life/ Bright, strong and golden." --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

Robert Plant, perhaps the greatest and one of the most recognizable voices in rock and roll delivers MIGHTY REARRANGER, an extraordinary accomplishment from one of the most inventive, consistently daring and talented figures in contemporary music. On the album, Plant is joined by his band The Strange Sensation who worked with him on 2002's Grammy nominated DREAMLAND and have been vital in the development of Plant's musical growth. The record is an inspired collection of new songs that are raw and bristling with energy but also rich in texture and detail. MIGHTY REARRANGER recalls the drive and passion of Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin's strongest work taking the explosive riffs, compulsive guitar hooks and mind boggling arrangements that Zeppelin is known for and infusing the music with the modern influences of Portishead, Massive Attack and Roni Size. The result is a sonic tour de force and one of Robert's finest offerings to date.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Should be 10 stars!!!.......2007-03-21

One of the best things Plant has done...Plain and simple... Easily the best of any of his solo albums (and I have them all!!) and right up there with Zeppelin! I was skeptical even though I am a fan, but this cd put to rest any doubts I had. You can tell he's matured but still sounds fantastic!! I can only hope we get more albums like this soon because Im already on my second copy of this one!!!

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this........2007-01-05

This is a cd that I listen to over and over, especially in my truck. I played it for my boss and he immediately went out and bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Robert Plant Mighty Rearranger.......2006-11-10

For those of you who have been and always will be a Robert Plant fan, this is the CD for you to play everyday. The vocals and arrangements are excellent. On Tin Pan Valley you get to hear that awesome Plant Wail. I'll make it simple this a completely fantastic CD, Robert still totally has it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Robert Plant Album Yet.......2006-09-16

Simply put, Plant's best album to date. Despite his aging, unlike other classic rock vocalists, Robert's voice seems only to have improved over the past four decades. This album exemplifies Plant's fantastic musicianship. Also, the Strange Sensation is an extraordinarily gifted band, and would have to be, for Robert to choose them to back him up. Both the music and lyrics are exquisite here, and this album definitely deserved to win, though they didn't, the two Grammys for which it was nominated. Both "Shine It All Around" and "Tin Pan Valley" were nominated for 2005 Grammy awards. Mighty Rearranger was one of 2005's better rock albums. Here you will find a matured Robert Plant, who knows his current level of musicianship, and concocts a brilliant album by playing up to his capabilities. You will not be dissappointed with this CD. It features some amazing tracks such as, "Shine It All Around", which displays Plant's amazing vocals regardless of his 56 year-old voice, "Tin Pan Valley", which is a great hard rocking tune, "Brother Ray" which kind of reprises the album's tunes at the end, making for an excellent conclusion, "Another Tribe", which is a fantastic folk song, and "Freedom Fries", which is a great rock tune that makes a sound statement about America's current situation. Overall, this really is a must-buy album for any fan of contemporary rock, or for any Robert Plant fanatic. Even those who may have disliked the youthful, screeching Plant of the 70's, you may find that you'll like these tunes. I cannot think of any album from the past decade that matches the high level of musicianship to this album. Also, I would recommend getting yourself the Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation's Sound Stage DVD, from their PBS concert. It is a great live perfomance of the album's material, along with some updated versions of old Zeppelin tunes. Purchase yourself Mighty Rearranger, this is one of the greatest albums of all time!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good but certainly not great ...........2006-07-17

but then I don't think Plant will ever do an album that matches the height of his work with Led Zeppelin. What we get here is a contemplative, sometimes brooding album, in which Plant covers a wide range of sources (including his own) to create a pleasing but not all together satisfying album. He is still drawing from folk forms, but there is a pop strain to the music. I even detected a distant echo of "Indian Reservation" on "Let the Four Winds Blow." The lyrics are strong, however, ranging from his disgruntlement with his peers on "Tin Pan Valley" to an apocalyptic vision of things to come on "Another Time." Probably my favorite song on the album is "All the King's Horses," a beautiful ballad in which he contemplates the long road he has traveled.

Joseph Lamb, a white musician who lived from 1887 to 1960, was considered one of the major ragtime composers of his era. By the end of his life, he had fallen into total obscurity, and even the ragtime revival hasn't made him a household name. His rags are different in style from Scott Joplin's, generally briefer and simpler in construction but still filled with lovely melodies and unaffected charm. The "American Beauty Rag," from which this disc takes its name, is only one of Lamb's many delicious miniatures (most of them under three minutes). Virginia Eskin has the style of this music down perfectly. She plays with just the right tempos (a trifle faster than would be appropriate for most of Joplin) and a lyrical sensitivity that doesn't prevent her from showing rhythmic drive. We're used to more than 49 minutes of music on most CDs, but 20 of Lamb's rags in a row are enough for one listening session. Don't give up before you reach the last one, though; "Nightingale Rag" is one of Lamb's best. A fascinating byway in American music is effectively explored and presented in realistic sound. --Leslie Gerber

2 out of 5 stars American Sorta-Beauties.......2007-05-06

Ms. Eskin certainly can play piano. She can certainly read music. And she can combine the two well enough. What I found most distracting about this album, however, isn't the fact that she doesn't repeat many of the measures. It's that she tends occasionally to hit clinkers. After the first one or two, I found myself listening more closely for mistakes than actually enjoying the music. Another problem with this album is that her renditions are too bulky and heavy. I've heard much cleaner-sounding performances of Lamb's work.

I paid the money so I don't intend to return the CD. But it'll play well enough in my noisy car driving to and from work.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-10-10

I have owned this album since June 2000, and it inspired me at the time to find out more online and even to compose some rags of my own. It turns out that many of the melodies are made more "logical" by Eskin. However, she does use too much pedal, and she also does not take most of the repeats. It is unfortunate that she repeats only the first strain of "Ragtime Reverie," for there are no on-demand recordings of that work over the Internet.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-07-31

its a good album but not very good
first of all in several rags virgina doesn't repeat where it says it must. second she plays several rags way to fast. Joe lamb was just like the others that ragtime must not be played fast the feeling get lost in the a rag that is played to fast like ragtime nightingale. I have the sheetmusic myself and it says "slow march tempo" not fast like virginia it plays.
but its a good album she plays with flair and style

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!.......2002-12-29

Joseph F. Lamb is generally thought of as one of the three greatest of the classical ragtime composers, the others being Scott Joplin and James Scott. It's a matter of taste, but many rank him almost as highly as Joplin, and this exquisite album shows why. Lamb's rags typically soar with wonderful, reverie-evoking melodies, unmatched in the ragtime canon. These melodies are offset by original, exciting, brisk passages. Virginia Eskin executes these gems wonderfully. She presents them always at the proper tempo and as written, without the filigrees that are so common in ragtime playing (Lamb doesn't need them!). The only drawback -- and it is a very minor one -- is that she sometimes treads a little too heavily on the pedal. This album is essential in even a small ragtime collection. In my large collection, it is one of my favorite and oft-played treasures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Rags Played with Gusto.......2002-08-04

Up until Joseph Lamb, the only ragtime composer who could satisfy me was Scott Joplin. These rags are excellent and distinctly different from Joplin's, although both composers are obviously from the same genre. According to the liner notes, they even knew each other.

The pianist has a great love of the material, and it shows in her playing.

I highly recommend this CD to all fans of ragtime.
