The pinnacle of his jazz-rock work of the early '70s, One Size Fits All boasts some of the most memorable songs of Frank Zappa's career performed by one of the most beloved Mothers of Invention lineups ever assembled. This cast of musicians' musicians--including George Duke, Ruth Underwood, and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson--blasts through the groovy sci-fi world of Inca Roads, the hyper-charged blues rock of "Pajama People," the lounge majesty of "Sofa" and concert mainstays like "San Ber'dino" and "Florentine Pogan." An integral part of any Zappa Collection. --Andrew Boscardin

From the Label
The fourth FZ release in a row to reach the Top 50, this is a mix of studio and live tracks (some from the production of FZ's TV special A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME). Another whitewater excursion to the apogee of rock/jazz/satirical fusion, with a terrific band including keyboardist George Duke, drummer Chester Thompson (later of Genesis), and percussionist Ruth Underwood.

Lyric approach ranges from the topical, recession-era "Can't Afford No Shoes," to the giddily surreal "Sofa No. 1 and 2;" plus the obligatory display of instrumental wizardry on "Inca Roads." Other track highlights: "San Ber'dino," Florentine Pogen," and "Po-Jama People." Originally released in 1975.

5 out of 5 stars Zappa still has not been outplayed!.......2007-04-22

If you are one of those people who say they dont like Zappa buy this CD. The guitar solo's on Inca Roads and Po-Jama People are enough to convert anyone with the slightest bit of taste into a Zappa fan. The music is great on this album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Zappa's best album of the 70's.......2007-02-25

This album is the culmination of Zappa's work of the 70's. Its predecessors: "Over-Nite Sensation" and "Apostrophe" were fabulous, but had not matured to the degree of excellence as this album did. Zappa assembled a group of veteran musicians. The refined and consumed madness of its jazz-rock sound makes this album a monumental treasure. "Inca Roads" transports us in Zappa's Jazz oriented mind where the lyrics and the drum-beats share the same tight-rope, then its guitar solo confirmed that once again Zappa was not only a superb musician, but he was also full of surprises and charms. The four songs: "Po-Jama People," "Florentine Pogen," "San Ber'dino," and "Andy" prove how Zappa was such a sarcastic and iconoclastic son-of-a-gun. Johnny "Guitar" Watson's vocal contribution in two songs makes this album even more special. In closing, "One Size Fits All" may also be described as Zappa's signature: "Music is the Best."

5 out of 5 stars One Size Does Fit All..........2007-01-12

If you are into Zappa's mid-seventies, George Duke-influenced, funk...then look no further. This is by far Zappa's funkiest entry, and if you get a chance to buy Bongo Fury which was recorded live at about this time, the two complement each other perfectly. Andy, in my opinion an underrated song, is classic and unrivaled on this album. Sofa's 1 and 2 are both interesting pieces; San Ber'doo, for Californians especially, will make you laugh; Florentine Pogen is exceptional. If you do not like his 'poppy' stuff of this time period, you might give this one a try because it is still solid, and in my opinion, better than Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe.

5 out of 5 stars 5 estrellas.....no hay mas???????.......2006-09-26

5 out of 5 stars It's been said before but I'll say it again...Zappa's best!.......2006-08-20

...and that's saying something. Before I get into my review, I just wanna say "Thank You!", to all of you readers out there. Any newcomers who are interesting enough to open this page, thanks! It's good to see that there are still plenty of people in the world who love the work of Frank Zappa. Through his six-volume "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" releases to his countless post-humous albums, the man's done it all, but this takes the cake. Along with some other works around this time, "One Size Fits All" is an absolutely essential Zappa tape that should be one of the first in this genius's world of music that should be added to your collection.
How to pull off a feat of making the best of a 60+ discography? Simple. Write some great lyrics, work on some impossible songwriting textures, techniques and tempo changes and hire a virtuoso musician that adds up to almost every popular instrument known to man.
If I'm exaggerating, I apologize, but stating this album for what it's worth, well then: It's worth the price and then some! In only nine tracks, Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (though this is the last title to include), they pull off a flurry of genres that, when combined together in the right way, makes a leviathan of an album! You have the jazzy, 9-minute opener "Inca Roads", for example. This is one of my favorite Zappa tracks, and included are some impossibly fast marimba/flute work, funny lyrics and a 2-minute plus guitar solo from the man himself! Actually, I love the solo here, not only because it shows how talented Frank Zappa was, but it's memorable, almost to a lusty extent if I may be so bold. I can't get enough of this track, and neither will you if you're looking for some classic Zappa.
"Can't Afford No Shoes" is a pretty basic, amusing and straight-ahead rock track with a great guitar/drum/piano combo and lyrics that will make you laugh. Both the "Sofas" are jazzy and romantic; the second one includes lyrics in German, which makes sense, considering Frank Zappa is German. However, I must admit I like Sofa No. 1 a bit more.
Even though I normally give a track-for-track review of most of the albums I review, and I've left you hanging to see how some of the other songs are, I think I'll just let you find out for youself. After all, there's nothing wrong with a surprise, and it's important to get the heads-up on songs like these for yourself. But if you wanna get into Zappa, this is a positive MUST-BUY.
Overall: A few words to describe this album: Epic, Fantastic, Timeless, Romantic, Lyrically Witty, Instrumentally Dazzling, and at the top of the Zappa tapes (I refer to Frank's work as "the Zappa tapes" with my guitar teacher sometimes). To speak in a direct way, I, like many other Zappa fans, consider this to be one of the greatest Frank Zappa albums you're gonna get. So, if you are interested in a number of music genres, are looking for something that's not your typical rock album, or just want to discover the magic and the genius that is Frank Zappa, add this to your list and I hope you'll love it. I know I did!

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-05-07

I have liked most albums from this group. This is another keeper. It is a good combination of vocals and simple but creative music. The production is very good. Overall a very good CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Nylon's Finest Hour.......2002-04-28

I discovered the Nylons via this 1980's release over 15 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Both on stage and in these wonderful accappella tracks, the group lifts the listener to new heights, and in the process literally reinvents some of the classic songs we all know and love. The standout here is "Up the Ladder to the Roof" - originally a song from The Supremes - but given a new percolating lease on life in this superb arrangement, which shines unlike any other Supremes cover recorded before or since. Other strong cuts include "Please" "That Kind of Man" and "Prince of Darkness." Whether singing soft easy listening numbers or rocking gems, the Nylons will capture your audio heart in this shining album, which I consider one of the best vocal collections of the past 20 years. A superb addition to any music lover's library!

5 out of 5 stars Great voices, engaging songs.......2002-02-28

Very nice! I enjoyed all the songs on this album...which is uncommon as I usually find an album has about half the songs as "place holders". Unlike their album titles "The Nylons", the voices were in harmony, even in difficult passages they were on-key, the instruments were not over-powering...a great album. I will definitely try out more albums by The Nylons!

4 out of 5 stars Their best.......2000-11-13

It's for sure their best, catchy songs, fine arrangements and beautiful singing. One star off because Bumble Boogie is missing. I'm glad I still have original LP.

5 out of 5 stars Pop harmonies at their best!.......2000-08-16

One Size Fits All is a wonderful a cappella pop album that is aptly named because it is so widely appealing. This album is well known in high end audio circles for its natural vocals and superb recording. I bought my copy after seeing it in many audio stores during my college days.

This is one of my favorite CDs, not only because it impresses on my high end audio system, but the songs are downright infectious. Don't be surprised to find yourself humming and snapping your fingers even after the music stops playing.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Dont let the name fool you. These bro's can sing!.......2005-07-09

The Cleveland Oh based Men at Large, a group discovered by Gerald Levert, came with their sophomore album in 1994 and it was bumping right away. I just pulled this cd out of "archives" and it took me back to that spot 10 years ago when I running the streets and doing my thing before I literally settled down!

My favorite songs on this cd are: Holiday, where the guys talk about everyday of the year being similiar to a holiday.."its a holiday, its your special day..its not Christmas, Thanksgiving or Valentines...

Good things dont last

Dont Cry, featuring Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat

Feet Wet..I dont wanna fall in love, I just wanna get my feet wet...let me hit it, let me get it!!!

First Day...ever since the first day I met ya, I wanted to hit it..(I wanted to hit it) but you wasnt it with...I promised it that I'll keep it on the d-low

I wanna roll, which is a smooth mellow song with a good background beat for slow dancing or two stepping

Funny Feeling

and of course, Will you marry me, which is a classic, classic song....

this is a very good CD..I would say 10 of the 12 songs could have been radio hits....wonder what happened to these brothers.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!.......2004-02-03

I JUST LOVE THIS CD. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS CD FOR THE FOURTH
TIME,@ AMAZON.COM. THIS CD HAS SOME GREAT SONGS ON IT! MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE "WILL YOU MARRY ME","LET'S TALK ABOUT IT" AND
"HOLIDAY". SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2002-06-03

This was a great album. I wonder why I am the first person to rate this. I know plenty of people have heard about Men at Large. The whole cd is excellent. If it is still avaiable in stores, please get it! The brothers can sing. My favorites songs are "I Wanna Roll, Funny Feeling, First Day, Better Off By Myself. This cd is HARD! One Love.

Evenrude - One Size Fits All was originally released on the Mercury label back in 1989. MTM has just re-released it through their Classix series. Ole Evenrude is an accomplished guitarist as well as singer. Ole has worked with Dag Finn, Sha-Boom, Swedish Erotica and Return. He always puts alot of money into production for his CD's and he likes big choruses. At times he sounds like Alice Cooper from the Hey Stoopid album. Most of the songs are very catchy & he always has great guitar licks and solos. If you are a fan of Alice Cooper, Swedish Erotica, Dalton , Treat or Shy you will probably like this CD.
