Their debut album went gold in record time and the initial hype from the Beatles' own label (Capitol) was that this was the group destined to be the next big thing--which they were for this one album. "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" were the big hits. But the hype and their overnight success set off a "Nuke the Knack" backlash that saw their subsequent records fail miserably.
Get the Knack, however, is great power pop. "Your Number or Your Name," "Lucinda," "Oh Tara" and "That's What the Little Girls Do" are all top notch pieces of songcraft, brought to their fullest potential by the flawless production by Mike "Commander" Chapman. --

From 1978 on, I've been off and on in following modern music, which resulted me in not being aware of groups until I heard their 10-30 year old songs on the radio and then learning who they were, such as a song called "My Sharona". During that time I saw some promos for groups/singers, some of which I had no interest in just from looking at the band, such as "Get The Knack". (When I heard "My Sharona" and heard it was The Knack that did it, I had forgotten the album cover that made a poor impression and confused the Knack with the Tubes.)
Then, in 2005 I watched the short lived TV series "Hit Me Baby One More Time", and made the connection. I enjoyed their performance and sound. I finally listened to the original project. No, they have not moved up to being my favorite band (I prefer groups like Missing Persons, Berlin, Little River Band, Village People, Boston, and Styx), but I love "My Sharona" and like the Knack over all.
Besides the song that I don't need to mention over again (you know what song I'm talking about), I also enjoyed "Oh Tara", "(She's So) Selfish", and "Frustrated".

Richard Lester's The Knack...and How to Get It captures the mystique of London's Carnaby Street days. Composer John Barry matches the subject with a perky to pensive score that juxtaposes Alan Haven's sometimes bubbly, sometimes funereal pop organ with strings, xylophone, and a blanket of female voices. The result is an often haunting backdrop that strangely conforms more to waltz rhythms than the expected discotheque beat. As usual with many Barry scores, there are variations on one melody (often in a minor mode). Here the tracks provide an eerie musical picture to Lester's foray into the alienated and sometimes twisted psychology of '60s youth. Included are snippets of incidental film dialogue and a vocal version of the theme song by Barry's singing protégé Johnny De Little. --Joseph Lanza
Customer Reviews:
One of Barry's best.......2005-07-24
I haven't seen the film in 30 or more years (and suspect it's dated, as all Lester's 60s films have), but Barry's swinging score has often been on my mind. I bought the vinyl mono soundtrack when it was out and later was lucky enough to find a stereo version. It's just great - Lester's visual style freed Barry up and this is score is more sheer "fun" than anything he wrote before or since. It's hard to pigeonhole. I guess these days it would be categorized as "lounge music," but with its ultra-cool organ solos, it kinda sounds like roller-rink music for the ultra hip! The expanded CD seems to include dialogue from the film, which I'm not sure is a good idea. Too bad it appears to be out of print again ... grab a copy while you can find it.
Swinging!!!.......2005-02-04
This charming and uplifting soundtrack is fast becoming my favourite John Barry score and believe me there's a lot of contenders for that title!
Even without the visuals from the very individual movie which spawned this music, you can't help be transported to the popular image of 'Swinging' London in the 1960's.
As with many Barry scores most of the tracks are variations on the title theme, but each has its own identity. With Alan Haven's groovy jazz organ to the fore it's one of Barry's more overtly jazzy scores. There's some great arrangements with Barry's tradmark swooping strings, bold brass and that sexy muted trumpet used so effectively in his mid-Sixties output. In fact many of the musical styles he used for the Bond soundtracks like Thunderball are evident and there are times when you can almost visualise a tuxedo clad Connery prowling a casino.
If you want to hear well crafted melodies equisitely arranged and performed then look no further than The Knack.
groovy soundtrack!!!!.......2004-06-27
This movie was made by Richard Lester...in between his 2 Beatles films, A Hard Days Night & Help. The movie captures the same feel as his other movies. Very uplifting!!! Great movie and soundtrack!
A TRULY 5-STAR CD OF THE 60'S SWINGING JAZZ.......1998-07-14
The movie THE KNACK--AND HOW TO GET IT was awarded best picture of the year 1965 at Caines Film Festival. An important reason for this award was the music score by John Barry. The movie almost serves like a music video or a format to present John Barry's score. Rykodisc accomplished a nearly unbelievable enhancement of the sound quality in this CD. It sounds like a recent recording made with the latest technology!
As to the music itself, it captures a swinging jazz style very reflective of the 1960's in England. And the music is truly 5 stars! Everyone I have ever shared this music with absolutely loves it!
Since John Barry is the original James Bond composer, there are elements of the music that are wonderfully reminiscent of the early Bond music. But John Barry is a master of a wide range of different types of music; therefore, the music is also quite unique.
Every track on this CD is great! It is one of those "must buy" CDs.

Sentimental journey.......2002-04-24
We bought this album not long after it was released and we have recently bought the CD (which to my knowledge has never been for sale in the netherlands, at least not until a few years ago).
We like it so very much because we like the beat and it has the real music on it with real instruments. To me it sounds like the music of the sixties with the knowledge of the seventies. Although it is ofcourse different again, it for instance reminds me of the music of the KINKS. Real honest music.
If the beat of the sixties is your music be sure to buy this CD. You don't want to miss it. I don't want you to miss it.

Dare I Say It, They Lacked The Knack.......2002-04-21
When `My Sharona' first appeared on the pop music scene, it sounded like a monster and Knack mania was born. The problem was, the real tendency of the times was against this sort of corporate power pop, and the inevitable backlash crushed the band as quickly as they had arisen. It became hip to hate the Knack, and pretty soon everybody did. Truth be told, the most amazing thing about them is that such an uninspiring band generated so much hoopla. Only by comparison to the torpid arena rock of the late seventies could the Knack have seemed exciting, and only because of the anti-corporate rock hype of punk era could so many have felt compelled to condemn the band with such fervor. This is why their subsequent albums and the inevitable 90s reunion generated nearly a fizzle. In retrospect the Knack just seems monumentally uninteresting. Sure `My Sharona' had a catchy hook, but you can satisfy your urge by listening to the Weird Al version and frankly, his lyrics are more interesting. The only other song of real note here is `She's So Selfish' but it ain't enough to recommend the album. In the end, it's more interesting to talk about the Knack than to listen to them. Frankly, they deserve to be forgotten.
The only half way decent album.......2002-02-28
I remember buying this record in 8 Track tape and during the summer of 79 listened to this album over and over. At the time my favorite song was "My Sharona", but eventually I got tired of hearing it. In fact, just about every song on the album sounded the same which revealed the limited talent of this band. Although this album sold well, the bands second album bombed and the band essentially faded into oblivion. It was, also, interesting that the Knack was, at the time presented as if they were the "Beatles" reincarnated. Obviously, they weren't and became another one hit (or in this case a one album hit) wonder band. I have no desire to listen to this album and believe that it adds little if any value to your record collection. The Rolling stones worst album out does the knack by a mile. This is definately an album and band that could be skipped. If they were to do a reunion concert, I doubt at this stage if the band would be able to sell out the Parking lot of a White Castle or a Dunkin Donuts.
The Best Pop Rock album ever recorded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-01-02
I've bought alot of Pop records in my lifetime But "GET THE KNACK" really stood out in front of the pack in "1979" and really held up Great over the years, it still sounds excellent to this day, the songs are very melodic and catchy with great hooks. I know the comparison to the Beatles probably hurt them but this first Knack album really did capture the excitment and energy of the early Beatle records. "GET THE KNACK" will ALWAYS be one of my favorite albums of all time.
They Don't Make 'Em Like This Anymore.......2001-09-01
Ah...the Summer of '79. More than 25,000 punch-drunk baseball "fans" partake in the apocalyptic mayhem known as "Disco Demolition Night" at Chicago's Comiskey Park. Disco, the antithesis of rockers everywhere, dies a symbolic death in a fiery explosion that hot July evening. Meanwhile, the Knack's "My Sharona", a naughty, blistering ode to teenage sexuality, owns the # 1 spot atop the charts for weeks on end. Unbeknownst to anyone, the hands of time were cruelly ticking and the Knack's fifteen minutes were nearly over. Call it blind optimism, but we rampaging juveniles thought these guys would rule the universe forever.
Yes, Capitol Records shamelessly cashed in on the Beatlesque qualities of this energetic L.A. quartet and yes, it was all so brutally calculated. But, who really cares? And more more importantly, who really cared in 1979 when the only two pop records that mattered were "Get the Knack" and Cheap Trick's "Live at Budokan" ? We ate this stuff up. And for good reason. It rocked. It tugged at our hearts and stroked our raging teenage hormones. And most of all, it shredded everything else in that homogenus gutter known as Top 40. It was part punk, part Liverpool and for that one glorious Summer it was all ours. "Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" were mega-hits, but every tune on the LP (as we called them back then) is pure killer power pop. The guitars slammed, the drums were punchier than a drunk brawler in a Sunset Strip bar and the hooks were unforgetable. "Oh, Tara", "That's What the Little Girls Do" and "Lucinda" were all catchy enough to have charted. Heck, they even pulled off a dynamite Buddy Holly cover with the infectious "Heartbeat".
Twenty years later, they're are plenty of gutsy, rockin' bands just like the Knack. Problem is, no one knows about them. Record companies won't touch 'em. No, they want serious stuff. You know, stuff like rap/metal, sappy singer songwriters and teenage creampuffs. Oh well, you can't beat 'em, so go ahead and get the Knack and rejoice in the pleasure that is/was rock-n-roll. They don't make them like this anymore!

Customer Reviews:
Originally this would have been a double album.......2002-06-16
I can't top kidamadeaus' review, but I can add the fact that these two albums of songs were written and ready to be recorded at the same time. The Knack wanted to issue it as a double album, but since it was only their first release, and double albums don't always sell that well, they were persuaded to issue half as "Get the Knack". That's why they were able to come up with another album just 8 months later after another super-fast recording session. These songs weren't as consistent as the first album, and contained no mega-hit songs, but there are a few gems there. The Kinks' "The Hard Way" is a nice cover. Combined, these albums are an unbeatable value.
Great Music - Excellent Value.......2001-05-08
In 1979, the album "Get The Knack" rocketed up the charts and became a staple of the airwaves with the hit My Sharona. Founding members Doug Fieger, Berton Averre, Bruce Gary, and Prescott Niles created a tight, hard-rocking sound that wowed audiences and critics. They were legendary in Los Angeles clubs for jam sessions with giants like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and The Doors' Ray Manzerak. When it came time to record, they wanted to capture the essence of their live performances. They hired producer (and former Sweet member) Mike Chapman, and created "Get The Knack" in 13 days, with minimal overdubs, and a budget of $18,000. What they created was one of the fastest selling hit records of all time...it went gold in 13 days, and platinum in 7 weeks. "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" went to #1 and #11 respectively. The album had an energy and craftsmanship of song that has rarely been equalled. A mere 8 months later, The Knack released "But The Little Girls Understand", and it immediately went gold. A Top-40 single, "Baby Talks Dirty", lead the charge but momentum was fading. Critics began to pan the band's meteoric rise in popularity, and turned on them. By the end of the year however, the group was nominated for two Grammies. Musically, this CD captures a firey band at the top of it's form. This band was very talented (Bruce Gary's drumming is amazing!), crafted excellent power-pop songs, and influenced music for years to come. It is also an excellent value for the price, as the production remains true to the original vinyl. A must buy for fans of pop, eighties, or just fun music. Highly recommended!!

A very, very impressive debut.......2003-10-06
I heard Greta performing on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's delight. I found it hard to believe that somebody this good didn't have a recording contract. This is a self-recorded, self-sold album that's (in my opinion) one of the best albums of the year. I puzzled a little over the Time Out comment about her sounding like 70s pop. More like timeless pop. Perhaps it's the Wurlitzer organ plays to wonderful effect.
Welcome To The World!.......2003-06-22
Uniquely like no one so much as herself, Greta Gertler's sterling debut of timeless intelligent song craft shapes a tellingly indelible imprint. Most notably charged with an alliance of her singular vocal charm and warmth. The beguiling melodies united with lyrical intimacy and passionate arrangments summoned by this Wurlitzer commanding pop mistress, foretell no restrictions to Gertler's considerably distinctive and generous talents. Featuring the grand and elequent sweep released from a multi textured production, alongside an inspired collaboritive ensemble cast, each song provides it's own inimitably desirable reward. Perhaps it is producer Noah Simon and Gertler's ambition to reveal something novel and gloriously incandescent with every visit. In fact they have delivered an unquestionable cause for celebration. For this Baby, dear reader, is the sound of a classic. The delightfully sensuous sound of an artist coming of age. Let us welcome her arrival-

Endearing Collection from John Barry's Early Films.......2006-09-28
This is a very good collection of John Barry's film music from the 1960's. Besides the various James Bond film themes, impressive selections such as THE IPCRESS FILE, KING RAT and THE CHASE are included. "Wednesday's Child" from the QUILLER MEMORANDUM is very good. There is not a bad cut in the bunch.
GREAT MUSIC BY A GREAT COMPOSER.......2003-11-10
IF THIS CD ONLY HAD "WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD", IT WOULD BE WORTH THE PRICE AND THEN SOME. I FIRST HEARD THIS ARRANGEMENT IN 1981 ON AN EASY LISTENING RADIO STATION IN CHICAGO AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. THERE ARE OTHER GOOD SONGS AS WELL ON THIS CD LIKE "FUN CITY", "WEDNESDAY'S CHILD", AND "NEXT TIME".
INVENTIVENESS FOR ORCHESTRAL COLORS, INFLECTIONS, RHYTHMS.......1998-06-25
After searching my music collection for my very favorite albums, I tried to locate the same artists at [Amazon.Com]. I really liked "The Living Daylights" a 007 James Bond thriller produced by John Barry (Warner Brothers 1987). Has anyone heard of John Barry? Evidently he is a quiet and secluded man but he has composed music for quite a few box office film hits, some in the James Bond series. All the tracks on this album are good but I especially liked Thunderball (Track 11) and Goldfinger (Track 17). John Barry is very versatile in his music style but several have that "suspense" feel and bold, base, brass leads. The insert describes his music as "inventiveness for orchestral colors and infectious rhythms; his gift for melody majestically sweeping or deceptively simple". I agree. You'll like this album - most likely all of the 17 tracks with 53 minutes of play.
John Barry revisits his classic themes circa 1968.......1998-05-20
This collection is culled from John Barry's brief association with Columbia records in the sixties. Dull cover art betrays the fact that this is the best John Barry compilation for your money. "The James Bond Theme" has never sounded better, and Barry turns his rather stoic theme for "The Lion in Winter" into a intensive workout for jazz organ. Other hard to find anywhere else themes include "The Ipcress File," "The Quiller Memorandum," and "The Wrong Box." The sixties really did swing!
