As they celebrate a thirty-year career of filling arenas, selling tens of millions of albums and playing songs with which a generation of rock fans came of age, visionary rock legends Rush decided to have a little fun with the music they grew up with. Featuring covers of songs by The Who, The Yardbirds, Love, Cream, Buffalo Springfield and more, the trios new EP Feedback is a rocking good time for anyone who loves Rush or just classic rock & roll. Drummer Neil Peart, in the albums liner notes, explains, "It was April of 2004, but Geddy, Alex, and I were channeling back to 1966 and 1967, when we were thirteen- and fourteen-year-old beginners. We thought it would be a fitting symbol to commemorate our thirty years together if we returned to our roots and paid tribute to those we had learned from and were inspired by. We thought we might record some of the songs we used to listen to, the ones we painstakingly learned the chords, notes, and drum parts for, and even played in our earliest bands. The tracks on this collection are songs we liked from the era that we thought we could cover effectively (meaning not too many backing vocals), and have some fun with. The music celebrates a good time in our lives, and we had a good time celebrating it."

30th Anniversary Rush EP Chockful Of Classic Covers!!!!.......2007-07-17
Summertime Blues - Excellent rendention of the classic Blue Cheer (right?)tune. The vocals are a little rough and the song sounds like a recorded jam done live. Perfect.
Heart Full Of Soul - Killer Yardbirds tune. If I hadn't been nudged by Rush to seek out the original, I never would have done so. A great song.
For What It's Worth - I always liked this haunting Buffalo Springfield song. The boys from Toronto make quick work of it and it works out quite well. One of my personal favorites here.
The Seeker - The fact that these particular songs were chosen is awesome. Each one rocks out loud. This was always one of my favorite songs by The Who, now i get to hear one of my all time favorite bands doing it! Excellent!
Mr. Soul - Another nod to Buffalo Springfield. Lesser known song. It's obscure, but intense.
Seven And Seven Is - This is another great song. Driven. Grooving. Great.
Shapes Of Things - This Yardbirds song has been covered by so many people and yet it still rocks hard. Gary Moore, David Bowie, etc.... Now Rush. AWESOME!
Crossroads - A great Cream song. Alex shreds here. Very f*cking cool!
Overall, this is a great little EP to tide over the Rush fans and give a little tribute to the bands they admired when they were young. The 30th Anniversary tour was awesome! They played like 40-something songs. I love Rush and have since I was like 13 years old. That was a long time ago and I still can't think of anything I'd rather do than jam out to one of their album. It's been a great, glorious, ilustrious 30 years, and I hope they continue for another 30.
Dig it!

Cover Songs .......performed by Rush.......2007-05-09
1 Summertime Blues 4/5 sounds like The Who version....nice try
2 Heart Full of Soul 4/5 good
3 For What It's Worth 5/5 sounds better than the original that's abused
4 The Seeker 5/5 better than Townshend...Alex
5 Mr. Soul 5/5 love how they start this song...awesome...one up on Young
6 Seven and Seven Is 4/5 least favorite, I like the original...missing last part of this song..I gave it a 4 though, my wife likes it
7 Shape of Things 4/5 not bad...better than The Jeff Beck Group version
8 Crossroads 5/5 Pretty good here...one on Clapton here..or Robert Johnson
This album goes good in the continuous play of any other Rush album, especially Snakes and Arrows, or even Vapor Trails.
Another lame album of covers - well played though.......2007-05-01
At least with Rush you know the playing will be phenomenal (which it is) and the arrangements will be precise (which they are). If you don't already have these songs by their original artists, go ahead and get this album. Otherwise, skip it.
And actually, they ARE covering the Who's version of "Summertime Blues", but with a little Blue Cheer thrown in. The *ORIGINAL* version of the song was done in the key of E by Eddie Cochran in the late 1950s. The Who transposed it to the key of A, and Rush does it in the key of A as well, and they're doing the faster, harder version popularized by the Who. The intro sounds more like what Blue Cheer did, but BC did the song in the key of C.
This is a fun album.......2007-04-05
I am a huge fan of the original versions of "Heart Full of Soul" and "Crossroads", and I think these two songs are the highlight of this album (also "The Seeker" and "For What it's Worth" are very good), particularly the great guitar work of Alex Lifeson on "Crossroads".
If you're a Rush fan, or a fan of any of the originals (or covers of the originals) on this album, then you should buy this, as you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.

It's understandable when artists want to grow their fan base in order to more easily make a living and also reach a larger group of listeners. The trick, of course, is how to do this without releasing artistically compromised records that, well, suck. L.A. underground vets J5 were almost a supergroup from the start, combining the formidable talents of the Unity and Rebels of Rhythm crews. If anyone deserves to move beyond the backpack clique, it's them (well, and Aceyalone). And while no one's going to condemn the band for pulling a Black Eyed Peas here, it's hard to imagine really listening to this album as much as its two predecessors, either. Take the lead single, "Work It Out": the jam has a smoove, down-tempo vibe that's nice enough, and the Dave Matthews vocal on the chorus is pretty excellent. But the lyrics--which deal with not only let's-get-back-together-baby material, but also vaguely PC hip-hop--never gel. It makes one yearn for the actual Daisy Age. There are a few outstanding tracks, but overall this is a hip-hop album that sounds as if it were written by a corporate committee--each song directed at a particular demographic--rather than a mini-manifesto crafted to get your fists pumping and/or your feet moving. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
still laid back hip-hop.......2007-07-24
Decent, but disappointing.......2007-01-03
It's not just that they are missing Cut Chemist, although that sure hurts. It's also that DJ Nu-Mark's beats are quite a bit cheesier than usual, veering away from his usual jazzy complexity, and running dangerously close to the dance club pulse of MTV-land. The album does feature the inexplicably catchy DMB collaboration Work It Out, which I have been singing under my breath for days, but let us remember that catchy is not the same as lyrically great.
So if you're a J5 fan, instead of Feedback, I suggest you pick up Nu Mark's solo album Hands On, which serves both as a showcase of his spinning talent and a rich museum of jazz, funk and world music. In fact, with support from Chali 2na, J Live and a few other hip-hop artists, that release comes a lot closer to the original spirit of J5 than this stuff.
These ARE the same guys, right?.......2006-12-01
There are a few live performances that impress though, like "Turn It Out" and especially the album's opener, "Back 4 U". The latter gives you the idea that this will be another stellar J5 journey, but immediately following that song is the blatant "Radio". And the problem isn't that J5 is trying to become mainstream because as reviewer DJ Benny pointed out, they've always been on Interscope (kinda like people calling Dilated Peoples underground yet they're on Capitol Records); it's the fact that a lot of the songs are so different from their usual style that it's a little hard to stomach.
I don't think the lead single "Work It Out" (with Dave Matthews Band) is all that bad; the only problem I really have with it is that even though Dave is only singing the chorus, the music makes it feel more like Dave Matthews Band featuring Jurassic 5 instead of the other way around. But as other reviewers have mentioned, female-oriented songs like "Brown Girl" and especially "Baby Please" fall flat. The latter also isn't helped by the speed-rapping, OR the sample of Al Green's "Love & Happiness" for the umpteenth time. And there's absolutely no excuse for "In the House"; well, unless this was 1983.
One song that everyone seems to like is "Red Hot", but the chorus to that song ruined it for me. Songs that DO impress include tracks 8 and 9: "Where We At" and "Get It Together". Another highlight is "End Up Like This". The song has the chorus: "How did we end up like this?" which is exactly what I'D like to know. Maybe the guys in J5 don't realize that it's best for the MTV generation to jump onto their bandwagon because they realize the music is good, not because the artist pathetically changes their style to fit the mold. Hopefully they'll realize that the next time around because right now if most people were to download a lot of these songs, they'd probably want to send the feed back.

DIRTY still sounds FRESH .......2007-04-03
Always changing their sound, this is their grunge effort. Very upbeat with a natural rock coolness that includes propulsive layers of sound and fury. DIRTY is the second shot of shorter pop songs in the same way "Goo" was produced. Both Goo and DIRTY sound more accessible w/o the long instrumental guitar noise passages that graced earlier albums
ESSENTIAL SONIC YOUTH along with Daydream Nation(which sounds completely different) and EVOL- I also LOVE Murray Street, Sister, Thousand Leaves + 2006s Rather Ripped. I am also a REALLY BIG fan, I had to buy all of their albums.
DIRTY shows a wonderful transition for Sonic Youth still sounds fresh and clean - 15 years after it's release.
another very solid SY release.......2007-03-14
There seems to be two basic problems with Sonic Youth releases. On some, the production is way too obscure and lacking to let the beauty of the album be heard, and on others, the soaring sections of feedback and reverb can sometimes wander off into obscure directions with seemingly no purpose. Both are aspects that I do not criticize too harshly, because I think of Sonic Youth as artists rather than musicians, throwing the ugly in with the beautiful to create a very realistic picture. Reguardless, these flaws do bring down the overall release somewhat.
In 'Dirty', there are no throw out tracks, great (but not too great wich is a good thing) production, and the feedback sessions are shortened and too the point. This is a very straightforward release by Sonic Youth standards, but also a very dark and atmospheric work at the same time. Everything seems in place here, a classic SY release. The only complaint I have is that in some places, 'Dirty' may be a little too straightforward. Not quite a masterpiece such as 'Daydream Nation' or 'A Thousand Leaves', but a very solid, and entertaining album as a whole.
I Don't Get It.......2006-04-14
If I wanted to hear this I could go down to the local foundary yard and listen to them cutting steel.. FOR FREE.
I could go into a blow-by-blow for each track on why it's musical murder but that would be a grand waste of my time. Horrible.
This is one band that the indie snobs made it "uncool" to dislike, so everyone looks around like "wow this is flippin genious" while in their heads they can't believe that everyone else likes them and they don't. GET OVER IT. You want arty music, go listen to Sigur Ros or Godspeed you Black Emperor.
Dirty sounds, but dirty is nice isn't it..........2006-03-05
Musically it may not be as interesting as their 'Daydream Nation' or masterpiece 'Sister' but there are great songs on here. Without a doubt this is their best collection of songs.
'100%' was an MTV hit and could rival with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', the track following that 'Swimsuit Issue' (Gordon) with strained and coarse vocals has a great break and suddenly slows down.
A dreamer side of SY can mostly be found in the songs sung by Kim Gordon like 'PR' or the thumping, metallike 'Drunken Butterfly'. 'Shoot' is carried by Kim's voice and a rolling bassline.
Best song on the album is the brilliant 'Sugar Kane' with some great moments of pure musical genious, clarity, chord changes. I could go and on. Similar songs like 'Chapel Hill' and 'Purr' come close too.
Even know almost 15 years later there is so much you can still discover in the album, it surely shows that Sonic Youth are the godfathers of all the indie/underground bands that followed. Husker Du and Dinosaur came close, but in importance to alternative music only the Beatles, Neil Young and the Velvet Underground are above Sonic Youth.
Their approach to music is almost jazzlike, and like many jazzartists, after a while they started making fully rounded songs but of a scary quality.
If you are interested in buying a Sonic Youth album but never heard anything before get this one.
Not as Dirty as it sounds.......2006-01-27
100% - GREAT. rocks. 'nuff said.
SWIMSUIT ISSUE - really like the lyrics of this kim number. "don't touch my breast / i'm just working at the desk"
THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD - good vocal by thurston here, but the title really does it justice. it's a sound-world of waxing guitars.
DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY - this song even sounds like its title, and is one of my favorites on the album. kim sings ' i love you i love you i love you whats your name?' quite appropriately. grating riff.
SHOOT - another good Kim song, about domestic violence in some way, it seems. but maybe that's my over-literal interpretation. "you only hit me when you wanna be pleased".. kind of a sad, but in the end, vengeful song. i like it a lot.
WISH FULFILLMENT - another favorite on here. like the lyrics a lot, and good vocals by lee. check out the rehearsal recording from the remasters as well, for an interesting take.
SUGAR KANE - really great song, rocks hard. brings back a lot of good memories of someone i used to have feelings for, probably because they liked this song so much.
ORANGE ROLLS, ANGEL'S SPIT - don't listen to this one. just too obnoxious for me.
YOUTH AGAINST FASCISM - i really want to like this song, but..
NIC FIT - no. this reminds me of being a 16-year-old at a TRUCK GRIND YOUR FACE show, not wanting to have people spill beer on me anymore.
ON THE STRIP - another great kim song. dark feeling, reminds me of SHOOT.
CHAPEL HILL - one of the songs i liked a lot when i first got this album because it was immediately accessible, and it still is pretty rocking.
JC - a high point of this album, definitely. something about this song is hypnotic and captivating, like you don't want to leave its presence. great lyrical work here and sonically it's just so fresh.
PURR - good song, but not -that- good.
CREME BRULEE - eh. like i said.

If all Sonic Youth albums pretty much sound alike, as skeptics grumble, some Sonic Youth albums definitely sound more alike than others. And Sonic Nurse is one of those. Practically Sonic Youth concentrate, the disc manages to sound like a distillation of the band's career and a promise that they can keep doing this forever. Sonic Youth has trimmed away its more direct hooks, while also curbing its artier indulgences. That isn't to say that melody or noise is absent--especially when it's Kim Gordon's turn to rant on cuts such as "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"--but that these elements are carefully balanced and defer to an overall sound that's richer than ever now that newest member Jim O'Rourke has fully integrated himself into the band's gestalt. The mood may be pastoral and domestic, but often, as on "Peace Attack," it's grounded in an undercurrent of concern. --Keith HarrisCustomer Reviews:

A tribute to the electric guitar.......2006-01-27
PATTERN RECOGNITION - this song just kicks ass, no way around that. i love the riff, the lyrics, kim's vocals, everything.
UNMADE BED - this might be my favorite song on the album, but that would be hard to say for sure. not too much noise or experimentation here, just a very poignant song that is sonically blistering and beautiful, and has excellent arrangement, touching vocals, and amazing feeling. the guitars are just unbelievably great. short, but packs so much into it.
DRIPPING DREAM - i've heard a lot of good things about this song, and i think it was one of the first ones i liked when i first heard this album, but now it doesn't seem as good as i thought. it's good, just.. it gets better.
MARIAH CAREY AND THE ARTHUR DOYLE HAND CREAM - oh, wait.. did they change the name? oh, i see. it's now KIM GORDON. probably afraid of offending ole' miss carey. not a bad song, they played this when i saw them on tour for murray street. it's enjoyable, but nothing amazing.
STONES - this would have to rival UNMADE BED for favorite on the album. the guitar work here just blows my mind, and the bridge and climax of this song just send me into sonic ecstasy. due to misfortunate events, i didn't get to see them tour on this album, but i had REALLY wanted to hear this song live. there is so much intensity in the playing.
DUDE RANCH NURSE - this song is really good as well. i mostly like it for its lyrics, and thought the album should have been called this instead of sonic nurse. kim really grabs you with her vocals in this song, "Let nurse give you a shot!".. it's very erotic in some weird way that only some of us could understand, haha.
NEW HAMPSHIRE - a good song, somewhat autobiographical for thurston, i gather. good lyrics, good vocal, great guitar work once again.
PAPER CUP EXIT - another high point of the album, but i'm not sure what to say about it. love the lyrics, love the guitar work, yadda yadda. i sound like a broken record. this is a lee vocal, and one of his best ones. one of the more political songs on the album, and a bit less obnoxiously so than the last track..
I LOVE YOU GOLDEN BLUE - somewhat in the vein of 'SYMPATHY FOR THE STRAWBERRY,' and although i like the other better, this does a good job. starts out with the noisy part like 'sympathy,' and then goes into a sultry kim vocal. very haunting, beautiful. but also, somewhat hopeful at moments. very good song.
PEACE ATTACK - i really liked this song when i first got the album, and i still think it definitely has a good point, and the climax of the guitars is pretty kickass. it just seems a bit kitsch now.
so overall, this is one of the best albums, like, ever. buy it. steal it. whatever you have to do, if you're a fan of the guitar, get this album.
This nurse can take my temperature anytime!.......2006-01-13
Upon intitial listenings to "Sonic Nurse," one can be forgiven for thinking otherwise. The songs are generally long (only two clock in under 5 minutes) and some have relatively little--or none--of the free form sonic freakouts that are supposed to be the band's stock in trade. Heck, some of Thurston's offerings here have more than a little of a certain hippy-ish vibe. On "Stones" he even sings "the dead are alright with me." Wait, is that as in the Grateful freakin' Dead? The full lyrics are of course too eliptical to tell for sure, although they seem to be about endurance in the face of adversity and death, so there's a definite acknowledgement of getting older, anyway. Mind you, song titles like "Peace Attack" with its "nature sex" refrain (at first I thought it was the more punkish "nature sucks") can worry even hard-core SY fans. Thurston has described "Sonic Nurse" as a cross between Black Flag's "Damaged" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors," and one can argue that it's too much of the latter, but give this one a chance to sink in and you'll be hooked.
Not everything is peace n' love, thankfully. Kim Gordon has turned out to be the band's edgiest songwriter (check out her SYR project with Ikue Mori and DJ Olive), and her contributions kick those jams out the door, down the street, into your house and knock you over but good. The album's opening salvo "Pattern Recognition," about pro corporate trendspotters, buzzes and screams like some of the primo "Dirty" material, and what can be said about the puckishly titled "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"? It's a gossipy, hilarious take on recent events in the life of Mariah Carey ("how was your date with Eminem?/Did he bake you and then forsake you?") with the album's stormiest musical backing that is, in a word, fierce. Kudos also for name-checking free jazz great Doyle as well.
It should also be noted that despite the softer moments, the album is still loads more dissonant than most of what passes for "alt rock" these days. Sure, I love the Arcade Fire as much as anyone, but it's great to have a group that combines that level of songwriting prowess with the musical un-orthodoxy bred of punk, free jazz and experimental musics. Sonic Youth are still more than relevant, my friend--they're necessary. No Wave? Try Now Wave.
Sonic Youth keeps it going........2005-09-08
So as a whole, this album really is a pleasure to the ears. If you like noise rock, Sonic Youth, or just good music at all, I strongly recommend "Sonic Nurse". It's one of, if not the best, album of 2004.

Sexy.......2006-04-24
Starting with the previous unexplored world of acoustic lo-fi, which was relatively big in the indie scene back then, in 'Winner Blues' comes an instant SY classic, 'Bull in Heather'.
For some reason this song is perfect for around 5 am in the morning, it just has that scary feeling, but in a seductive, sexy way that borders on the pornographic when Kim is droning up numbers. Kim's songs are very good on this album by the way, 'Doctor's Orders' having a great chorus you can sing along, and it could almost be a Nirvana chorus.
There are some swing-and-misses, it could have done without 'Androgynous Mind'
In line with 'Dirty', there are some great Thurston Moore songs, if you can call them that. While never reaching the level of 'Sugar Kane' or 'Chapell Hill' songs like 'Waist' and 'Screaming Skull' (with a great riff as a break) have their moments.
It may not be the best SY album, but it's still very good and worth listening to over and over

The ageless Sonic Youth return with a new, yet familiar, excursion into their own particular brand of ultra-amplified, dissonant rock. The quartet's CD A Thousand Leaves evokes fond memories of yesteryear's noisy, now-classic, avant-garde approach, while retaining snippets of traditional pop elements heard on several of their previous major-label releases. As Sonic Youth's music has gained a larger audience, they've preserved doses of the crunched melody and meandering structure that has always been their trademark. The new release sounds relatively unabashed, with wandering songs like "Female Mechanic Now on Duty" spewing extended barrages of feedback and Kim Gordon's dry, unsettling scowls at the listener. Look deeper, however, and there's a quiet resonance among the racket, with tracks like "Sunday" and "Snare, Girl" making use of Thurston Moore's cooler vocal tone and jagged, cascading guitar passages. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

The short lived second edition of Spirit.......2007-04-13
The album the quartet recorded although not up to the standards of the band's first four albums, had promise. With the shift in personnel and the decidedly Texas flavored rock 'n' roll. The quartet's only album features some terrific tunes and Al ably steps into Jay and Mark's shoes while Christian although not the same type of guitarist as Randy, does a very good job. Many of the tunes have a Southern rock flavor to them very gritty and quite different from what Spirit had tried before. The boogie rock that this edition of Spirit did ironically wasn't that far different from what Ferguson and Andes did in Jo Jo Gunne.
Collector's Choice has done a service to Spirit fans by reissuing this overlooked minor gem. The mastering by Ken Robertson is quite good and the liner notes include comments from Cassidy and Locke about this line up and their experience recording the album with the late producer David Briggs ("Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" and a frequent co-producer with Neil Young).
The album has a few weak tracks (most notably "Mellow Morning" written by Al Staehely with Jo Jo Gunne guitarist Matt Andes)but overall, it's a worthwhile addition to the Spirit tradition with some truly outstanding tracks. This new edition has a b-side that added as a bonus track. "New York City" is a solid closer that would have sounded terrific on the album. Given time this line up could have produced music equal to but different from the previous incarnation. Jo Jo GunneTwelve Dreams of Dr. SardonicusThe Best of Spirit
Time is not always fair.......2005-11-04
But revisited decades later... hey, this is good, solid rock and good songwriting. And the instrumental tunes like "Trancas Fog Out" are stellar.
Tunes "Right on Time" and "Mellow Morning"..evocative of the year, and solid.
Overlooked gem. Not fantastic, but notable!

The loss of Randy California, Mark Andes and Jay Ferguson, and the addition of the Staehely brothers made for a unique `Spirit' album, that (as other reviewers note) stands on its own. Al Staehely doesn't sound like Jay Ferguson, but he does not suffer in comparison, and his bass playing is impressive. Younger brother Christian lays down some tasty guitar playing throughout. As one reviewer correctly noted, his guitar solo in Cadillac Cowboys is especially memorable. It's great to hear John Locke stretch out and shine, and the jazz-trained Ed Cassidy is excellent. There is an added, bonus track titled New York City. It sounds a bit like Cadillac Cowboys, with an interesting instrumental coda. However, the song is flawed with juvenile, sex-oriented lyrics ("I can't wait to get in your bed, can't wait for some good head"). Ripe and Ready offers similar lyrical gems.
Of course, these were young guys (well, at least the Staehely bros. were, as Christian was still in his teens), and many could identify at the time.
This is a really good album, perhaps even better today than it seemed in 1972. Maybe that's in part because of the lack of good rock albums over the years, or perhaps it just evokes a more pleasant time. One thing is certain; the sound quality of this recording is stunning. The instruments are clear, distinct and well defined in the soundstage. It sounds better, in fact, than my Mobile Fidelity Master copy of The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. Sony did a great job in this `Collector's Choice' line.
If you remember this album, and liked a few cuts on it, chances are you'll like it even more than you did back then. If you've never heard it, now's your chance. It's worth it.

A 2-DISK (STUDIO & LIVE) BYRDS SAMPLER.......2004-08-04
The first CD is probably the best single disk compilation to cover the band's entire career, and despite some curious choices it is for the most part very good listening. I love the opening programming sequence of the 5 "Tambourine" album cuts, and that promising start is sustained with growing excitement for most of the disk -- at least through "Sweetheart's" 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere'.
The only album not covered is "Dr. Byrds", which is represented by the overdubbed single 'Lay Lady Lay' issued in that period. It failed to make the original "Dr. Byrds" album in any form, and whatever your opinion of that single (which many find either hugely impressive or disasterous), omission of 'This Wheel's on Fire' (especially), 'Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man', or something from "Dr. Byrds" is for me a significant stumble -- after which the program loses momentum and fails (in my opinion) to adequately convey the quality of the later albums.
'America's Great National Pastime' especially is an unworthy conclusion to a Byrds career retrospective. Almost anything else from "Farther Along" would have been more satisfying.
Still I have to admit enjoying the way this program laces the obligatory cuts with unexpected choices like 'Lay Lady Lay' and 'I Trust'. This makes for a fresh listening experience to USA fans, where the first of these did not chart and the second was never issued as a single.
The sound quality is good but a little short of first rate, so I suspect these were compiled from European EQ masters rather than the originals. In fact there's a production error tip-off: the slamming door that opens 'Get To You' on "Notorious Byrd Brothers" appears here at the end of 'Wasn't Born To Follow'; the engineeer thought it closed the latter track instead of opening the former. Clearly, he was working from an EQ copy of the "Notorious" album, not the song's master. And 'Lady Friend' is a rarity, the original monaurel single, which may interest collectors. It sounds fine and you probably won't notice the monaurel track without headphones.
The second disk of live performances from "(Untitled)" is an entertainingly edited little excerpt that seamlessly melds 'Lover of the Bayou' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man' into a continuous performance, followed by the 16 mimute 'Eight Miles High' jam; as on "(Untitled)" the jam ends with a bridge song and McGuinn's farewell -- but this disk then edits in "Mr. Spaceman" as an encore brought on by the cheering crowd.
Overall I found this an entertaining album worth buying even for Byrds fans who have everything. The sheer volume of material rates four stars at the least. It's a nice alternate program for those times when you're in the mood for the Byrds from a fresh perspective, and not a bad introductory album.
I also like having a 25 minute Byrds live mini-concert on a separate disk.
However, as a full career retrospective of this band's long run on Columbia, "Definitive Collection" fails to beat out the 2 CD set "The Essential Byrds".

Genuinely beautiful dark electro-industrial.......2005-10-26
Admittedly, this doesnt burn up club floors, but if one has been listening to Darkangels, Laughingstocks and Soylent Greens over and over, this can be a very welcome change of pace.
Best songs: Dark-Star, Immortal, Atlantis, Reflect In Silence
Wonderful, if given a chance to shine.......2002-03-18
This is not to say that people shouldn't question something at first. Personally, I was torn on the album in the beginning, not really knowing what to think of it. I, too, thought that there might be something "wrong" because it didn't live up to that beat-driven potential. Later, however, for some reason unbeknownst to me, I actually sat down with the album and opened my ears. It was then that I heard the haunting beauty of this work.
With the combination of growling vocals and stylized lryics,Decoded Feedback again crafted something grand. Its eerie and yet beautiful and, quite frankly, hard to put a real label on. Perhaps that why I like it and still, after owning it for a while, still slip it in to my disc rotation. Listening to it, however, sometimes takes time before it grows on you. Despite being so good, I guess it wouldn't be for everyone.
One word: Boring.......2001-03-04

Melodic elektro with low bpm.......2001-01-18
It's the sequencing that stars on this album. It makes me play "Name That Influence." The title song has trace elements of early Depeche Mode. "A Kill to an End" makes me think of Kraftwerk in its syncopation. My favourite track, "Atlantis," reminds me just the teensiest bit of VNV Nation with its driving percussion. The vox works the best on this track; the growly vocals don't seem out of place alongside the minor chord melody.
Decoded Feedback seem to be making a progression toward synthpop, a trend I've noted for many industrial bands over the last few years. I don't mind this mellowing-out, but I would like to hear a few more harsher tracks. Perhaps their next album will have more variety.
