The Who's avatar was galvanized by the punk movement when he penned the 10 songs for this 1980 outing, his most commercially successful solo release. The album's opening track, "Rough Boys" (dedicated to the Sex Pistols), puts his viewpoint on the safety-pinned insurrectionists on the line: "I want to bite and kiss you," Townshend barks. In "Jools and Jim" he scolds bilious upstarts who "don't give a shit Keith Moon is dead," while the title track finds the "aging" punk godfather (he was 35 when the record came out) dismally admitting that "life is useless." Elsewhere, Townshend returns to the spiritual concerns that dominated his 1972 Who Came First solo debut, notably on "And I Moved" and "Let My Love Open the Door," Empty Glass's hit single. Musically, Townshend resurrects the rhythmic synthesizer patterns he concocted for Who's Next while also drawing on the drive of those punks whose devotion and contempt he so openly pines for. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Pete's solo classic!.......2007-06-28

Though it's often downplayed thanks to his experimental leanings, Townshend had a knack for writing the perfect pop-rocker that stretched from "I Can't Explain" and "The Kids Are All RighT" to "You Better You Bet" and "Athena". Empty Glass is, basically, an album full of those perfect pop-rockers. It doesn't make any significant advances past the Who's hard-rocking, synthesizer-driven, intelligent sound, which is my only complaint, and a small one at that. The whole album is just filled with some of the best melodies I've heard - top 5 "Let My Love Open the Door" is only the best known example; the ambiguous "And Then I Moved" (which casts Townshend's sexuality in a questioning light - not that I mind); rock critic insult "Jooles and Jim"; "I Am an Animal" and "Rough Boys" are similar: solid melodies, hard-to-forget refrains, lots of fun synthesizer parts. The hard-rocking side of Townshend's still here too: check the slide-and-harp blues "Cat's in the Cupboard" or the guitar-heavy title track and "I'm Gonna Get You". And every song is at about that level, which makes Empty Glass a must-have for Who fans. Interestingly, Townshend's voice has dropped an octave or so - no longer high and clear, so you can't expect him to hit the same notes as he did on "The Song Is Over" - instead, he's more at "Eminence Front" level. While I prefer the high-pitched Townshend (it just sounds so different! And I like different!), he's still a fine singer on this album.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-06-21

If you want buy only one cd of Pete from the discography, this is the one, the best!

5 out of 5 stars Pete Townshend's Best Solo Album.......2007-04-22

EMPTY GLASS is Pete Townshend's best solo CD. The opener, "Rough Boys", is about a 35-year-old rocker coming to terms with the punks he helped inspire, as is "Gonna Get Ya", "Jools And Jim" attacks critics who don't give artists a fair shake, and many other songs on this CD are the work of a person reflecting on past missteps, and have inspired me to hang up pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to repeating these errors of behavior myself. Get this album in any form you can.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2007-03-10

This is the very first LP I ever listened to back in 2002. It was my favorite. Then I went to Amazon.com and bought the CD. My favorites are
5. Rough Boys
4. A Little Is Enough
3. Jools And Jim
2. Empty Glass
1. Let My Love Open The Door

5 out of 5 stars Great music, mediocre remasters!!.......2006-12-12

I don't like most modern remastered discs. They sound harsh, flat , two dimensional, in other words they sound more like an average cd and less like the master tape or the original LP. When a remaster is done correctly, it can be superb, so I'm not against all remasters. I am a huge Townshend fan, but I find the original releases of these cd's to be much less fatiguing, more musical!! Why?, because they are exact dupes of the LP"S. They just sound more anologue-like!! The other little trick they pull with new remasters is to pump up the level so the it sounds louder than the original at the same volume setting, but louder is not better!!!! Turn the volume up on the original and you'll find the sonics are acutually better. They play much louder without compession or harshness! It's a shame, glad I held onto my original cd's and LP"s. Just an analogue lover's viewpoint.
Five stars for music, 3 stars for sound.

5 out of 5 stars A Rock Classic!.......2004-03-22

This is a beautiful and powerful work by Pete Townshend. This recording, as well as Rough Mix and Who Came First are three of the finest offerings by any rock artist. Empty Glass contains some of Townshend's most evocative lyrics and goose bump inducing rock and roll. The recording quality is superb. This is a true rock classic with great songs such as Rough Boys, Let My Love Open the Door, And I Moved, Empty Glass, Gonna Get Ya, A Little is Enough and others. Each piece is a love song to belief in a higher power and at the same time is a celebration of human fraility. Rock and spiritualism mix and as a result, may have found their apogee together.

5 out of 5 stars Overflowing with Brilliance.......2007-01-03

Pete Townshend has always been one of my favorite songwriters. He never flinches away from saying whatever he feels like, and never fails to impart that notion with exactly the right musical notation. Empty Glass spills over the brim with excellent songs and emotional rantings. It staggers and sways through a room full of musical ideas and brings them into your consciousness with sobering ease. If you were to only buy one Pete Townshend record... find a way to buy more. But if you have to settle, this would certainly be a good place to rest your ears. Not that you'll rest easy. It rocks and rolls and tinkers it's way into sounds in and out of subliminal focus. Rough Boys, Cats in the Cupboard and Gonna Get Yer will shake the very foundations of your soul, while And I Moved, I Am An Animal, Let My Love Open the Door and A Little Is Enough will lift your spirits up into the wild blue yonder, and somewhere between it all floats the ethereal rocking beauty of the title track. Whether you view it as the Greatest Who record that isn't, or simply a great record, it's certainly a recording worth more than you'll probably pay for it. The Mona Lisa at this price is a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars Better with the Who together............2006-03-21

Although this is only one of a few of Pete Townshend's solo works, I personally feel that Pete was a much better songwriter with the Who than without. As a solo artist, there are only a few songs on this CD, "Empty Glass" that caught my attention; namely "Rough Boys", "Let My Love Open The Door", and "Gonna Get Ya". While Pete can still rock on this CD, he doesn't show the bravado as he did on the early Who works, like "Live at Leeds", "Tommy", "Who's Next", and "Quadrophrenia". In my mind, THAT was The Who I want to remember; that had consistently good songs throughout the album that qualified them as mega-rock-stars. Pete can still rock on the few cuts from "Empty Glass" I mentioned, but doesn't do as well elsewhere on the CD. Dang, I miss the old Who....

4 out of 5 stars the same.......2006-02-04

A gold CD edition of the same...unfortunately not much better sounding but more expensive...

5 out of 5 stars Great first "Real" Townshend Album.......2006-01-23

Who Came First and Rough Mix are both great albums, but weren't true "Townshend debuts" due to technical reasons; Who Came First was mostly demos and left overs, Rough Mix a collaborative effort. Here Pete does all the song writing, and devleops his solo personality.

This album also shows that Pete was mostly interested in his solo career, as comparing the two Who albums after Moon's death with this show where the most care and attention was lavished. This album is diverse, energetic, often startling and engaging; the post Moon Who albums, while often being very worthy, are not as good as this. A shame.

Some beauty (And I Moved) mixed with hard rocking (Rough Boys; both songs that are startlingly homo-erotic) pure pop infection (A Little Is Enough, and Let My Love Open The Door, easily his most famous solo song) to strikingly honest self confession (the heart breaking title track, done in a more stripped down arrangement, as opposed to The Who's attempt, but still effective). One of Townshend's best albums.

5 out of 5 stars Post-rock Who-pop perfection.......2005-08-23

Who can argue with an album that contains two of the most perfect rock songs ever recorded? And that's not even counting the hits ("Let My Love Open the Door" and "Rough Boys")! "Jools and Jim" is Pete's strange, stirring challenge to punk rock and rock criticism of the late 70's and also, along the way, a sad meditation on the death of Who drummer Keith Moon: "Typewriter tappers/You're all just crappers/You listen to love with your intellect" is sung over the most propulsive, explosive music Pete ever created outside the Who. "I Am an Animal" is even more powerful, with Pete lacerating himself, in a voice that veers into falsetto (echoed by adventursome bass runs), over drums like rolling thunder: "I was always here in the silence/But I was never under your eye/Gather up your love in some wiseness/For every memory shall always survive/And you will see me!" The rhythm section on this album (Tony Butler on bass, Mark Brzezicki on drums) went on to become the rhythm section of band Big Country, but the best moments of "Empty Glass" are worlds more sophisticated and powerful than anything Big Country or the later-day Who could hope to achieve. Transcendant, pounding, powerful, beautiful stuff.
