Over a recording career that spans three decades, Canada's Bruce Cockburn has established himself as a passionate social advocate, a deft guitarist, and an adventurous musical spirit. Though nobody would characterize him as a singles artist, this collection of tracks originally earmarked for (and often ignored by) radio presents his often earnest, occasionally elliptical song craft at its most accessible. Cockburn's rhythmic insistence and airy arrangements--punctuated by jazzy violin and saxophone--redeem "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" and "A Dream Like Mine" as more than sloganeering, though the stridency of "Call It Democracy" belabors the message at the expense of the music. Bookended by two new cuts, this anthology anticipates a reissue series of Cockburn's catalog through his new association with Rounder Records. --Don McLeese

His 29th Album.......2004-12-16
While this is the 6th compilation album after Resume (LP Only), Mummy Dust, Rumours of Glory (Germany Only), Waiting for a Miracle, and If a Tree Falls (Australia only), this is the only one what features a cut with The Fairfield Four on backing vocals and that alone makes this album worth the price.
However, that said, if you are one of them folk what get upset when the marketers do this to us, i.e. put out a best of album and throw in a couple new tracks to bait us lemmings in to paying for the songs all over again, then buyer beware... that's what this is. It gets even worse, if you are willing to cough up an additional $4 you can get the Hybrid SACD version that contains one more added song, albeit not a new one (Rumours of Glory). After six compilation albums you'd think the trick would have run its course and we wouldn't be seeing such flim flannery going on with such a wonderful artist... but here we are again looking at the same old game.
I will admit that I made the purchase of the CD when it came out because I didn't want to allow those two new songs to go by without having them in my collection, but I am just as happy to play them two and none others because I already have all the other ones on the original releases.
I'm trying to be discreet here because I know fellow members of The Chesterfield County Chapter of the Bruce Cockburn Fan Club (dues $28.50 per year, meetings quarterly at the Sons of Herman Lodge or any time a new release comes out) will eventually see this review and they might get upset if I'm too harsh. On the other hand, some of them folk would do better spending their money on something more critical such as that four month past-due rent payment a certain person in Chesterfield County is neglecting. (Erma Collinsworth!)
Great sound - plus bonus "Rumours of Glory" on SACD.......2002-08-02
SACD's are definitely an underpromoted media format with a sound quality both warmer and far more detailed than CD.
Great sound - plus extra song on SACD.......2002-08-02
