Over a recording career that spans three decades, Canada's Bruce Cockburn has established himself as a passionate social advocate, a deft guitarist, and an adventurous musical spirit. Though nobody would characterize him as a singles artist, this collection of tracks originally earmarked for (and often ignored by) radio presents his often earnest, occasionally elliptical song craft at its most accessible. Cockburn's rhythmic insistence and airy arrangements--punctuated by jazzy violin and saxophone--redeem "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" and "A Dream Like Mine" as more than sloganeering, though the stridency of "Call It Democracy" belabors the message at the expense of the music. Bookended by two new cuts, this anthology anticipates a reissue series of Cockburn's catalog through his new association with Rounder Records. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Very Best of Cockburn.......2007-02-22

I am just newly acquainted with the powerful lyrics, melodies, and beat of Bruce Cockburn. I now own 6 CD's, but this one, my first, is my favorite. All strong winning songs and 16 in total. I feel guilty enjoying his social commentary songs like "When A Tree Falls," as much as I do, for they relate to our failures in dealing with the environment and other peoples as things to abuse for our benefit. I guarantee you will not be sorry you bought this CD.

4 out of 5 stars All the Good Stuff on One Disc.......2006-07-18

Anything Anytime Anywhere: Singles 1979-2002 puts some of the best Bruce Cockburn songs all in one place. From early favorites like "Wondering Where the Lions Are" to more recent gems like "Pacing the Cage" and "Last Night of the World," this album features a great mix of songs that are fairly well-known. The only song that I miss in this collection is "One of the Best Ones." Bruce's beautifully crafted lyrics and melodies make him an inspiration for burgeoning singer/songwriters like myself.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce is amazing.......2006-05-21

This is a nice compilation of tunes, old and new. My Beat is great, and so is Tokyo. They are all terrific, really. I highly recommend this album!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Poetic Lyrics and Captivating Music.......2005-08-17

This is an excellent collection. Bruce has a knack for getting to the heart of world political matters through song. He does it with love and care and the soul of a poet.

I highly recommend this CD. I am enjoying it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best Introduction.......2005-07-04

I love anything from Bruce, anytime, anywhere, but you could do better than start here. The new cut, "My Beat," is a waste of bandwith, and I hate it when they add one song to get you to buy an album. No wonder everybody is downloading. This is a best-of from Stealing Fire on (ca. 1984). From that period you'd be better getting Nothing But A Burning Light (which contains the excellent "A Dream Like Mine"), The Charity of Night ("The Coming Rains") or Breakfast In New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu. Or better yet, go back to 1979's Dancing In The Dragon's Jaws or 1980's Humans. Everybody has their beef about a pet song that's left off a compilation. I've got about 20, but I'm keep them to myself. Bottom line is: you owe it to yourself to stock up on this excellent songwriter's backlog.

5 out of 5 stars His 29th Album.......2004-12-16

Now if you ask me, and a lot of gospel quartet fans do, this is a good way to expose yourself to The Fairfield Four. If you ain't never had the pleasure of exposing yourself to The Fairfield Four, then now is the time and this here is the disc.

While this is the 6th compilation album after Resume (LP Only), Mummy Dust, Rumours of Glory (Germany Only), Waiting for a Miracle, and If a Tree Falls (Australia only), this is the only one what features a cut with The Fairfield Four on backing vocals and that alone makes this album worth the price.

However, that said, if you are one of them folk what get upset when the marketers do this to us, i.e. put out a best of album and throw in a couple new tracks to bait us lemmings in to paying for the songs all over again, then buyer beware... that's what this is. It gets even worse, if you are willing to cough up an additional $4 you can get the Hybrid SACD version that contains one more added song, albeit not a new one (Rumours of Glory). After six compilation albums you'd think the trick would have run its course and we wouldn't be seeing such flim flannery going on with such a wonderful artist... but here we are again looking at the same old game.

I will admit that I made the purchase of the CD when it came out because I didn't want to allow those two new songs to go by without having them in my collection, but I am just as happy to play them two and none others because I already have all the other ones on the original releases.

I'm trying to be discreet here because I know fellow members of The Chesterfield County Chapter of the Bruce Cockburn Fan Club (dues $28.50 per year, meetings quarterly at the Sons of Herman Lodge or any time a new release comes out) will eventually see this review and they might get upset if I'm too harsh. On the other hand, some of them folk would do better spending their money on something more critical such as that four month past-due rent payment a certain person in Chesterfield County is neglecting. (Erma Collinsworth!)

5 out of 5 stars Great sound - plus bonus "Rumours of Glory" on SACD.......2002-08-02

Amazon is incorrect in saying this disc REQUIRES SACD hardware, since it is a dual layer SACD/CD disc it will also play back on a CD player. The SACD layer is notably superior in sound quality to the CD, plus you get the bonus "Rumours of Glory" track.

SACD's are definitely an underpromoted media format with a sound quality both warmer and far more detailed than CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound - plus extra song on SACD.......2002-08-02

Amazon.com is incorrect in saying this disc REQUIRES an SACD player - since it is a hybrid SACD/CD it will play fine on either an SACD or regular CD player. Sound quality of the SACD layer is notably superior to the CD, and you also get the bonus of "Rumours of Glory" included on the SACD layer.
