When the departures of original frontman Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis a studio trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, few could have expected the band to climb to greater levels of commercial success. But that's exactly what happened, and Genesis' left-field rebirth as a unlikely pop act began with this album, which introduced the newly slimmed-down lineup. But that's not the whole story. While the haunting love song "Follow You, Follow Me" introduced the band to the singles charts, elsewhere the group's penchant for accessibly complex composition and evocative lyrical dramas is in force on tracks like "Deep in the Motherlode," "Burning Rope," "Down and Out," and "Ballad of Big." --Scott Schinder

5 out of 5 stars A turning point for the Group.......2007-07-14

Well it came down to this one, which was essentially a sink or swim for the remaining trio. I love this one. It seems to me that the trio set out to prove a point- that they could make a quality album and boy, they did just that. I think this is very strong and certainly on a par with Duke. The tracks , the production - it all came together for them. An absolute deleight to listen to. Rutherford rises to the challenge and shines on the guitar(ala Deep in the motherlode is brilliant let alone the other tracks).Banks performs to his usual excellent standard(Undertow, Burning rope, Many to Many, The lady lies.)To say that Banks and Rutherford dominate the album is incredibly ignorant.Collins cowrote a few tracks and participated significantly in the others.Oh yes ,for students of fine drumming, listen in to how its done.
The guys rose to the challenge and put together a gem with this one and never looked back-to bad it is often overshadowed by Duke.

5 out of 5 stars Mr Phil Collins.......2007-05-26

what do you say about the band!there just a great "rock & roll band" there words & music say it all...........

5 out of 5 stars they were three and they sounded great.......2007-05-15

Anyone who liked "Wind and Wuthering" would enjoy this album, it's as good as any of the previous post-Gabriel era releases.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Album.......2007-04-19

And Then There Were Three is, as the title suggests, the first album made by Genesis after they were cut down to a three-peice. It is evident that they had not yet quite decided what direction they were going to in the album, but at the same time there are a number of good songs.

Tony and Mike each wrote about half of the album, Phil only helping on a couple of the songs. Both Tony and Mike wrote some very good songs and some just okay songs. For me, the highlights of this album are "Undertow", the instrumental section of "Burning Rope", "Deep in the Motherlode", "The Lady Lies", and finally "Follow You, Follow Me", that last song being the band's first big pop hit. It is a beautiful song-the best love song they ever wrote.

Though this album wasn't as good as it's amazing predescessor Wind & Wuthering, nor as good as its successor Duke, it is still a very good album and it is a worthy addittion to any collection of good music, an essential for Genesis fans.

4 out of 5 stars Genesis - I Still Enjoy This One.......2007-04-09

"And Then There Were Three" marked a major transition point for Genesis. Steve Hackett was gone and the band were down to just three original members, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. The result of this would find the band moving in a more commercial direction and somewhat away from their prog rock roots. The majority of the material on "Three" is shorter with the longest track clocking in at slightly over 7 minutes. Most of the rest of the songs reside in the 3 to 4 minute range. The album was also the first to find the band breaking into the top 40 singles charts in the U.S. with the album closer "Follow You Follow Me". Mike Rutherford took over the guitar duties from Steve Hackett. While Mike is a competent guitarist he is not in the same league with Hackett which somewhat diminishes from the music here. This is somewhat made up for by Tony Banks wall of keyboards, and Phil Collins outstanding drumming. This album gets slogged by a lot of Genesis fans as a "sell out" bowing to the lure of big money and radio airplay. Personally I have always liked it. The album is probably not as strong as it's predecessors, but most of the songs are good and there is still enough progginess here to please the hard core fan. Highlights include "Down And Out", "Snowbound", "Burning Rope", "Deep In The Motherload". All of these are solid and there really are no songs that I don't like on the disc. The single "Follow You Follow Me" closes the album and almost sounds like something that was tacked on at the end. It really does not fit all that well with the rest of the material in style. None of the songs on this album have become what most fans consider classics with very few of them played in the Genesis live show very many years after this album's tour. Still, this is one of those discs that I don't pull out very often, but when I do I am always pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-09

As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17

I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.

As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11

This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.
cheers
KZ

4 out of 5 stars One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01

Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly underrated album gets wonderful treatment.......2007-06-10

Just don't understand how even the band members themselves don't speak too highly about this album. The songs are solid and are definately some of the best in the whole catalog. Don't be put off by some of the other reviews here - the sound on this particular album is a significant improvement over the '94 remaster and the cd loaded into my computer without any problems whatsoever. As for the songs, "Snowbound" is the one the stands out the most to be. Nick Davis brough the drums out and really have them stand out to deliver the power of the song. SOOOOOO much better than on the '94 remaster. If you compare the 2, you'll be amazed. "Deep In The Motherlode" is amazing as is "Many Too Many." Every fan should have this new issue.

2 out of 5 stars Audiophiles Beware.......2007-06-05

The compression scourge has struck again! I was really looking forward to this remaster series coming out, but I'm totally disappointed. As with any compressed audio, it is harsh and fatiguing to listen to. The '94 remasters sound better, so there's no need to buy this unless you want the videos. Don't bother thinking about the European hybrid SACD's either because they're mastered by the same person that did this one - I know - I bought them too. The remix, on the other hand, clears up the muddiness of the previous mix, allowing you to hear things that were buried before. This could have been a revelation with less compression.

2 out of 5 stars Computer Catastrophe!.......2007-05-19

I was very excited to hear the remastered sound of this CD by first playing it through my computer speakers on my iMac and then hurriedly transferring it to my iPod. One major problem: the CD would not even load in my computer. I tried three times but it ejected the disc every time! Anyone else having this issue............?

By the way, I did give it two stars in place of the four that I thought that I would be giving it based on my familiarity and happiness with the music.

5 out of 5 stars First Genesis album as a trio gets long overdue sonic makeover.......2007-05-16

Genesis released their first album as a three piece appropriately titled And Then There Were Three in March of 1978.
Three would prove to be the band's magic number.
When the departures of original frontman Peter Gabriel in 1975 and guitarist Steve Hackett in 1977 respectively left Genesis a studio trio of Phil Collins handling double duties of drums and vocals, Tony Banks on keyboards and Mike Rutherford alternating between guitar and bass, few could have expected the band to achieve Gold success in the US. However, that's exactly what happened with this album and the band's rebirth as a unlikely more pop sounding act began with this album, which introduced the newly slimmed-down lineup.
The haunting closing love song "Follow You Follow Me" (penned by all three Genesis members) introduced the band to the singles charts here in the US and caused And Then to go Gold in May of 1978 (eventually Platinum).
Aside from this track, the album had other great tracks like the haunting "Many Too Many" (penned by Banks), the great Rutherford number "Deep in the Motherlode", the epic "Burning Rope" (penned by Banks, which had some great guitar work from Rutherford whom is a great guitarist although not near Steve Hackett caliber) the fast-paced opener "Down and Out" (penned by all three Genesis members) and the funny cowboy number "Ballad of Big" (also penned by all three Genesis members).
The highlight is really the Banks piece "The Lady Lies" which goes for about six minutes and is a great art rock/pop track.
The album's other pieces "Snowbound" (penned by Rutherford), "Undertow" (penned by Banks), "the whimsical "Scenes from a Night's Dream" (penned by Rutherford/Collins) and Rutherford's torch song "Say It's Alright Joe" are also great tracks though overlooked.
This album paved the way for the decade Genesis would reign, the 80s.
I first bought this album in October of 1997 on cassette and played it constantly. I eventually bought the remastered CD a month later (which was sonically superior to the original album, cassette, 8-track and CD).
Now in May of 2007, Rhino/Atlantic re-release the album as a CD and DVD set. The album is remixed on CD in stereo for excellent sound (kind of like what was done to The Who catalog in the 1990s). The new mixes are AMAZING and I hear things in the new mixes that I have not ever heard before. Also, it comes with a DVD which has the album mixed in 5.1 plus the two promo videos for the album (Follow You Follow Me and Many Too Many), new interviews with messieurs Collins, Steve Hackett (who explains why he left the band), Banks and Rutherford and the BBC documentary Three Days With Genesis (which covered the band's 1978 European tour climaxing with their Knebworth performance that year).
Highly recommended!

Brilliant, just brilliant, what more can I say. For lovers of 70's Genesis, just brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars DVD is great-CD is...not so much.......2007-05-31

I first listened to these new remasters in the car late one night coming home on a long drive. On this release in particular, I noticed that everything, especially the drums, seemed either re-mixed, or just mastered so hot that it was overdriven sounding. Something didn't sound right....it wasn't as clean, and the separation seemed lacking. I'm no audiophile, I'm a drummer and long time musician/music lover, but I don't have the $10,000 system at home. I knew something sounded not the same with these re-masters. Sure enough, I got home and A/B'd it with the 1994 re-masters, and the difference was obvious. The older remasters actually sound cleaner to me, the drums sound undistorted and natural....unlike the new version, which almost sounds like it was re MIXED, not just remastered. Granted, I love the louder volume in most remasters, but this isn't just louder, it sounds like the original recording was tinkered with. Maybe I'm imagining things, but I don't think so. Needless to say, I've kept the old versions to listen to, and am keeping the new ones for the great DVD content. Bummer. I don't even have surround sound to check out the 5.1 mixes.

2 out of 5 stars CD Layer: Audiophiles Need Not Apply.......2007-05-30

What can I say...I'm so disappointed. I was hoping that some of the reviews for the new Genesis remasters on Amazon UK were wrong - but unfortunately they're not. Compression has once again tarnished a classic title, and this time it's been done to a disc that is targeted at audiophiles (hybrid SACD). What were they thinking?! The remix, on the other hand, clears up the muddiness of the previous mix, allowing you to hear things that were buried before. This could have been a revelation with less compression.

I bought this version, out of the four that are currently offered, because I've been very pleased with the CD layers of all the hybrids I've purchased over the last few years. DSD is the way of the future, whether for redbook CD or SACD, and it's the superior transfer method at this time, but the people who were involved in this project obviously weren't audio purists. They had the tools (DSD) available to them that would have allowed them to make a beautiful remaster, but they screwed the pooch instead.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07

As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

5 out of 5 stars an uncanny blend of pop-rock and heavy duty prog.......2006-03-26

"...And Then There Were Three" was originally released in March of 1978, and it's the first Genesis album following Steve Hackett's departure from the band in 1977.

Now, don't get me wrong here--I'm not denying Hackett's compositional talent or his distinctive fluid guitar style. However, many fans have grossly overstated the importance of Steve Hackett's departure from Genesis. The sound of "And Then There Were Three" is very, very similar to that of the previous album "Wind & Wuthering". Okay, so there aren't any classical guitar spotlights a la "Blood On The Rooftops" on here, but overall, the albums are very sonically similar, and Hackett just wasn't spotlighted enough on the two previous albums, either compositionally or performance-wise, for his loss to be felt all that much.

Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford had such an incredible working relationship and chemistry together, as Genesis' 1978-1991 output monumentally demonstrates, that Hackett's leaving the group was undoubtedly for the best. That's not to say things wouldn't have been interesting had Hackett stayed. What seems to be overlooked by most of the fans who accuse Genesis of 'going pop' following Hackett's departure, is that Hackett himself basically 'went pop' in his own right on his 1981 solo album "Cured". All that said, it seems obviously clear that Hackett didn't leave Genesis due to them becoming 'too poppy', he left because he felt suffocated by the other guys and wasn't getting enough of his own compositions in.

In any case, "...And Then There Were Three" finds Genesis brilliantly carrying on without Hackett. Mike Rutherford was a fine guitarist in his own right, and even Banks played guitar (although not on this album if I understand correctly), so filling in the guitar parts was no big deal. And either way, you've still got the dense layers of keyboards from Banks and the tremendous drumming from Collins.

The album starts off with the dynamite "Down And Out". An icy intro gives way to a frenetic rocker with manical Collins drumming on the verses which are in a 10-4 time signature, giving the song an incredibly powerful, hyperactive feel. This is heavy duty progressive rock, folks. The rumor is that the lyrics pertain to Hackett's depature from the band, but it seems to deal more with the band feeling at odds with the 'pop music scene' of the late '70s.

"Undertow" is one of those wistful, lyrically vivid Banks ballads, with his beloved Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano sound, and a soaring chorus--an absolutely beautiful song. Also beautiful is Rutherford's spiritually-oriented ballad "Snowbound", with Collins singing the verses in that incredibly tender, feathery 'little guy' voice that's characteristic of him for this era (although it would forever vanish by the time of 1981's "Abacab"). The melancholy "Many Too Many" is marred a tad by overly prominent synth-strings, but it's still undeniably moving, with stirringly emotional choruses; it's surprising that it's a Banks solo composition--it sounds very Rutherford-esque. And even if you're burnt out on the feel-good radio hit "Follow You Follow Me", there's no denying it's superbly melodic, and it's neatly enhanced by Rutherford's heavily chorused/ flangered electric guitar.

There's a surprising turn toward Wild West thematics on "Ballad Of Big" and Rutherford's "Deep In The Motherlode", great songs, each in the 4 or 5 minute range, with the usual huge hooks and dynamics that we expect from these guys. The fade on "...Motherlode" makes effective use of backwards reverb on the drums. Banks' longer, 7+ minute "Burning Rope" perhaps drags a tad, but that's splitting hairs--it's darn great, with a terrific intro featuring masterful Collins drum fills. The sprightly "Scenes From A Night's Dream" is a wonderfully catchy pop-rock flavored tune, with terrific ringing guitars and ethereal background vocals.

Banks offers another 6+ minute epic with "The Lady Lies". It's a story-song somewhat along the lines of the previous album's "All In A Mouse's Night". The lyrics, about a femme fatale, are fairly lame and highly obvious, but the music is a different story... The verses are naturally sly and insinuating, and this is contrasted with an absolutely gorgeous chorus, plus there's a spine-tingling mid-section with a great Banks solo spot.

All in all, despite some minor gripes here and there, I can hardly say enough positive things about "...And Then There Were Three". This is the start of an unparalled streak of musical brilliance from the Banks-Collins-Rutherford lineup of Genesis.

4 out of 5 stars Genesis begins the transition from prog-rock to pop.......2003-10-14

This was the first Genesis album I ever owned. It's still a sentimental favorite a quarter-century later, though there are better Genesis albums. Guitarist Steve Hackett had left, and the album was recorded entirely by the remaining members: drummer/singer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and guitarist/bassist Michael Rutherford. This album and "Duke" mark Genesis' gradual transition from progressive rock to the pop of the 80s. "...and Then There Were Three" is lyrically dark, but the music is less ponderous than on "Wind and Wuthering" and the songs are generally kept short. The band plays well but not showily; the only solo of any length is Banks' synthesizer solo in "The Lady Lies". Hackett's role in the band had gradually declined after Gabriel left, and Rutherford is able to fill it capably here (by the time of "We Can't Dance" and "Calling All Stations", his lead skills had atrophied).

The first half of the album is full of songs about mortality (and one about fighting over a contract with the record company, which may have felt like the same thing at the time). The best of these is "Burning Rope", one of those Tony Banks songs where he strung together a bunch of stray riffs he had lying around. The ballad "Undertow" is also strong. A cowboy dies in the "Ballad of Big", and a snowman in "Snowbound". The second half includes Rutherford's gold-rush story "Deep in the Motherlode" (along with "Back in NYC" and "In the Cage", one of three Genesis songs that start with the same shuffle-beat bass part), lost-love ballad "Many Too Many", Collins' sprightly "Scenes from a Night's Dream" (a tribute to Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comic strip of the early 1900s), the boozy "Say It's Alright Joe", and "The Lady Lies", in which a knight is defeated by a monster posing as a fair maiden. The album ends with the single "Follow You Follow Me", which is so much more cheerful than anything else on the album that it sticks out like a sore thumb.
