What Billy Joel Does for an Encore.......2007-05-21

Hot on the heels of the smash hit that "The Stranger" was, Billy Joel deals us 52nd Street. It is a capable , listenable product, but the material here leaves me not as enthusiastic as that in the previous album.

The album opens with "Big Shot," a tough rocker with a bitter attitude about a misbehaven girlfriend. The aggressive power-riff guitar introduction leads into this mean-spirited rocker. But then that is followed up with the sappy, bitter "Honesty". Even though not his best, he's still ahead of the pop music game even when he's not in top form. The hit "My Life" is on this album, too; here's Joel's seemingly blunt statement about self-assertion. "Zanzibar" is an uneven, but ultimately fascinating long piece; it has blatant jazz overtones in it up to its jazzy trumpet solo. Don't expect the same kind of thematic music here that you got in the previous album's Italian Restaurant." In Rosalinda's Eyes, Joel references latin sounds with rather cornball effects; still, the end result in infectious enough.

Despite it not quite being up to the high standards of "The Stranger" the album still sold millions.

Fantastic.......2006-11-07

As the follow up to Joel's breakthrough The Stranger, this album suffered in comparison to the hit-packed Stranger. However, with 27 years of perspective, it is time to acknowledge the true genius of this album.

As always, Joel tries to be all things to all people. There are the obligatory top 10 hits ("Big Shot," "Honesty," "My Life.") There are some smooth jazz riffs ("Zanzibar," "Stiletto," "52nd Street.") There's even a little Latin music ("Rosalinda's Eyes.") The real hidden gem here, though, is Joel's unexpected Righteous Brothers tribute "Until The Night."

All in all, this deserves a worthy spot on any "Desert Island Disc List."

Billy Joel's best by far.......2006-08-07

I read in a book once that Joel Would find it difficult to come up with a follow up to the breakthrough album "The stranger-" and what to call it "The Stranger 2" or maybe "Son of the Stranger-" nah that would be boring....
Instead Billy gave us analbum totally different in concept to that of its predecessor but with the same energy and purpose.
As with "The Stranger" this album sounds like Billy Joel is really enjoying himself, unlike his first couple of albums.

52nd Street is an even more mature sound than the sound captured on Stranger and demonstrates not just Joel's superb musicianship but his influence all musical genres including Jazz, broadway and The Beatles.

The album kicks off with a bang on "Big Shot," probably the rockiest of Billy's numbers, then progresses through arguably the best Mcartney tribute on the beautiful "Honesty" and on to one of the most well known Joel songs in "My Life"

From then on, the album takes on a real Jazz feel with plenty of brass and latin percussion, including a guest appearance by jazz legend Freddie Hubbard on "Zanzibar"

The album's closer and title song is probably the only weak point of the album, sounding like a bit of a filler , although as with "keeping the Faith" on his 1983 album "An Innocent man" it's probably provides an explanation of what Joel's intention on this album was - "To have a party with the album, create music with more of a Jazz feel and once again to demonstrate his musical abilities and to proove to the critics that he is not a wandering piano balladeer.

This is the best Billy Joel album by far and if any Billy Joel fan hasn't got this in their collection (I would doubt they wouldn't" then they should NOW!!!!

Billy Joel in his best moment, no doubt about it!.......2006-07-13

Billy Joel is a gifted composer and musician. "52nd Street" shows Joel at the peak of the mountain in both ways. Even when I have the 4-CDs BJ boxed compilation, it lacks for "Rosalinda's Eyes", "Honesty" and "Until The Night". If you don't have it, get this album ASAP, you'll never regret about it!

The quintessential Billy Joel album.......2006-01-31

Don't listen to the idiot professional critic Peter Blackstock who downgrades this 52nd Street cd. This is even better than it's predecessor The Stranger, and a lot better than Glass Houses also. This is the first Billy Joel album that I listened to all the way through (my sister had a copy of this on vinyl). I might regard this so highly because it was the first Joel album I ever heard, but really this is just a brilliant album, and I know several other people who regard this just as highly also. I would also like to let you know that the remasters of 52nd Street don't improve the sound at all, and I would really say that the sound is noticeably worse than the first issue from back in 1983. This is in the top 10 or 15 of the most played albums that I've ever owned, so I really know the sound quality of the first issue, and when you know the album like the back of your hand, you can tell that the remasters are worse in quality, so you Amazon customers, look under the different entries of 52nd Street and look for a seller that says that they have the original issue because I promise you that it's better.
Every track is a 10 on a scale of 1-10, so disregard what Peter Blackstock (or whatever the dumbass critics name is who gives a short review right under the song list above my review) has to say, because I doubt that he's a fan of Mr. Joel or really knows anything about him either. My favorite songs on 52nd Street are "Rosalinda's Eyes", "Zanzibar", "Stilleto", "Half a Mile Away", "Until the Night", and "Honesty". Billy's at the top of his game with this superb offering, and if you liked The Stranger, I'm sure you will fall in love with 52nd Street. ENJOY!!!

Great SACD release, Mutli-channel is really well done........2007-05-07

I would have to disagree with the reviews on the 5.1 multichannel not being as good as "The Stranger" SACD release. It's it's equal easily.
The real issue is that "The Stranger" is just a better album to listen to.

52nd Street loses it it's strength after the Stilleto track and Stranger on whole is stronger from start to finish. Hence my 4 star rating versus the 5 I gave to Stranger in SACD.


Differences here for 52nd to a normal cd:
1) entire album sounds better. I never really liked Zanzibar, but changed
my mind after hearing this.

2) stand out tracks: Honesty (Vocal is exceptional on this one), Zanzibar(you can hear all the instruments finally), Stilleto (still think the Kohlept version is best though, it's got more kick and he seems to nail the feeling right)

Definitely worth buying.

Not worth buying, "Innocent Man" on SACD.

Better Sounds On DVD.......2005-01-06

Let me start off by saying that I don't actually own the SACD version of this album (and I don't believe the first reviewer did either).

Now that we got that out the way. I'm a huge Billy Joel fan and this one of my favorite albums by him (Nylon Curtain still gets my #1 slot). But that's not why I'm writing this. I wanted to inform any of you out there that for the absolute best surround-sound job I've heard of Billy's work is The Essential Video Collection.

Even though you only get the greatest video hits (including some surprises), you get a phenominal surround sound mix of everything on here. I don't have any idea why the SACD of "An Innocent Man" is only done in stereo. The video contains all of the videos off that album remixed in true surround.

The video/audio that stands out in my mind the most was "Pressure". During the solo break, you will hear instruments omitted from the album release and panned all around your ears. It's pretty amazing, and of course, I would love if they did an entire SACD Surround for "The Nylon Curtain". Unfortunately, it doesn't look like SACD (or DVD-Audio for that matter) is really going to catch on as much as some of us audiophiles had hoped.

The Essential Video Collection is not to be taken as a greatest hits collection of early stuff (It has "Piano Man", not the video version but the live one from Yankee Stadium). It does not have any selections off of "The Stranger", but yet it has footage from "Turnstiles". It doesn't matter, the DVD is great and having the surround sound only adds more appeal.

The DVD is a must-have for every fan. Pick one up as soon as you can.

Out On The Street.......2004-11-19

After Billy Joel hit the big time with The Stranger, he had the unenviable task of following up that classic. While 52nd St. isn't as good as The Stranger, it is still a tremendous record. The album opens up with the venomous and hard "Big Shot" and then does a complete 180 with the quite "Honesty". "My Life" is the big hit off the album and it bounces along while "Zanzibar" is the best song on the album. It has a smoky, jazzy feel and is one of the most interesting songs Mr. Joel has ever done. "Stiletto" has some slick piano work and "Rosalinda's Eyes" employs a Latin sound. "Half A Mile Away" is full of horns and verve and "Until The Night" is a slower number in which Mr. Joel stretches his vocal muscle. The title track closes the album out on a jazzy note. 52nd St. proved that Billy Joel was no fluke, as the album became his first chart topper and won the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Not quite up to The Stranger SACD.......2004-02-28

Not a bad SACD by any means, and definitely superior to the CD version, "52nd Street" on SACD still isn't as good as its predecessor. It's still easy to use and fun to play with though. As for the music itself...

After the mega-hit "The Stranger", which spawned hit after hit, Billy Joel released "52nd Street". It's a solid album, and essential for fans of the Piano Man, even if it's not quite up to the standards he raised for himself with "The Stranger".

The album opens with it's top three songs, "Big Shot", "Honesty", which is easily one of his most meaningful songs, and "My Life". Other standout songs include "Stiletto", "Rosalinda's Eyes", and the title track, but to be entirely honest (no pun intended) the album tends to taper off a bit after an incredible start. (hence 4 stars and not 5)

Still, a B+ album from Billy Joel is still going to contain some great music, and "52nd Street" is no exception. There's more here than music for die hard fans, and the Piano Man continues to please.

Impressive Mutichannel SACD!.......2004-02-05

"52nd Street" was Billy Joel's first #1 album,thanks to the jaunty #3 hit "My Life" and two other big hits "Big Shot" and "Honesty".It also won the Grammy for 1979 Album Of The Year and became the first CD ever pressed in 1983.Musically speaking,it was a extension of "The Stranger",pushing into both jazzier("Zanzibar","Stilleto","Rosalinda's Eyes")and rockier("Big Shot","Half A Mile Away")territories while remaining widely appealing and radio-friendly.Song for song,it may not match "The Stranger",but there are no weak songs either.Billy Joel had quickly established himself as the most talented and consistent hitmakers of the late 70's and early 80's,and "52nd Street" is a strong testament to that indeed.The 5.1 SACD mix isn't quite as good as the mix done on the "The Stranger".The sound is a bit flatter and duller than on that one,but I guess that was the result of the remnents of late-70's production values than of the sound quality of the SACD itself.That said,this transfer is superb for the most part,providing an excellent clarity,rich and spaciousness to such songs as "Honesty","Until The Night","Rosalinda's Eyes" and "Stilleto" that isn't available on the standard CD.All in all,this version of "52nd Street" is surely recommened,just not as much as "The Stranger" 5.1 SACD.

Why is Joe Lovano's retrobop revival record different from all the other retrobop revival records? Because 52nd Street Themes, which is dominated by five Tadd Dameron tunes, shakes off the musty museum reverence of such efforts and makes a very personal statement. Lovano's two most influential mentors in his native Cleveland--his father Tony and the album's arranger Willie "Face" Smith--both played with Dameron. So when Lovano plays a Dameron piece, he's not merely studying history, he's expressing the emotional debt of a son to a father, of a student to a teacher. Moreover, the saxophonist and leader has the kind of thick, creamy tone that does justice to the seductive melodies created by Dameron, Thelonious Monk, and Billy Strayhorn. And yet Lovano is a thorough modernist; no sooner does he evoke these old tunes than he pulls them apart and puts them back together again. There are seven nonet pieces (with Smith's wonderful, Mingus-like horn charts), two sextets, a quartet, a trio, a duo, and an unaccompanied sax solo. An enjoyable album from beginning to end. Great ensemble players. Swings for sure. Wonderful (if familiar) tunes. Well recorded. Lovano's one of the best saxmen today.

As others have noted, nothing terribly new or innovative here. But so what? It's still a very fine, emotionally engaging CD.

Do yourself a favor, buy the originals.......2001-01-18

Hey, I love and admire the Tadd Dameron, Miles and the gang, but their music is still available and generally of better quality on their original recordings. Great line-up of musicians but my collection just doesn't need another re-work of say, "Tadd's Delight." So you want to hear "If You Could See Me Now" pick up "Send in the Clowns" by Sarah Vaughn and Count Basie - it'll blow your mind. Beyond that, Joe just doesn't cut it here artistically. His sound is off and he just seems to have nothing new to add. This one got old real fast for me.

Museum Piece.......2000-08-15

I couldn't disagree more with the official Amazon review. Not only is this a museum piece, it's a museum piece par excellence. Right down to the "live to analog two-track" recording. All heads are turned to look back and re-create some fine jazz from the past. And they succeed. It is good jazz. And it's a good museum piece. If you like your jazz in a museum.

Compare it to almost anything you can think of in the same traditional jazz vein. (Clark Terry's similar efforts for example -- try "Having Fun" which also has Lewis Nash on drums) or a more forward looking example (Steve Swallow's "Always Pack Your Uniform On Top"). Something vital is missing here, a spark, an edge, some sense of challenge, of looking ahead. Even a sense of enjoying the music. This one will sell millions and we'll all hear it in department stores and on elevators for a long time.

Museum piece par excellence.......2000-08-08

I couldn't disagree more with the official Amazon review. This is very much a museum piece. Right down to the retro recording technique - live to analog two-track. Even the arrangements have a historical feel. Oh it's fine jazz and it's a fine museum piece. It looks back lovingly and never looses focus. But something is missing. This music is stale. Because it is so focused on the past, the musicians are at ease. They are so much at home there is no sense of excitement, no edge. No fun. No challenge to the listener. It is sure to sell millions. Compare almost _anything_ in similar setting: e.g.Clark Terry ("Having Fun" even has Lewis Nash on drums) or similar bop vein: Steve Swallow ("Real Book" or "Always Pack Your Uniform On Top") The past should propel the music, not hold it captive.

Lovano's best.......2000-07-29

Joe Lovano delivers his best album so far, and that says a lot! This time Lovano focuses on the music of the forties and fifties, but as usual interprets it in his own way, along with a band that sounds so great you just end up playing the record over and over. Lovano, whose playing is rooted in the bebop tradition, here pays homage to his roots, and with so much heart and beauty and wit!

This is easily going to be among the absolute top jazz albums of the year!

If you're looking for beauty, classic elegance, lush arrangements, swing, cool phrasing, great songs and originality, look no further. Lovano is the man, and this is the album.

New Yorker sweetness.......2003-11-01

I don't often get to New York, only once actually. Australian is such a long way away. When I did visit I went to the Village Vanguard to hear Ron Affif. I just had to visit the Vanguard and he was the only one on at the time. Since I listened, as one of the few in the audience, and only a ten feet away, I became a fan. This CD is smooth and sweet. What more can I say. Ron is a musician's musician. Enjoy.

Makes you want to do it.......2001-03-05

This is my first Affif purchase. I heard him on Bob Parloccia's(sp?) show and it took me the longest time to figure out what and how his last name is spelled. Spears is enunciated and not hard to find. If what you desire is heartfelt virtiousity buy this record. This guy can play --from originals to standards he, and the incredible backing bass and drum, can do it all. This is what people are missing in their lives. If I could play guitar, and I can't, I would play like Ron Affif.

Exciting, bare bones guitar jazz.......2000-09-25

Excellent hard bop in the Jimmy Bruno/Mark Elf sphere. The trio plays with a verve as if it was discovering new relevations and seredipities in the classic Montgomery/Farlow form. It is surprising that up to now, no one has taken the time to review this absolutely engaging opus. Of particular note are "Bohemia after Dark", "Stompin at the Savoy", and an easy take of the standard "You don't know what Love is". This is classic guitar jazz that makes one jump for the re-play button. I will certainly check out his other work after hearing this.

Debuting at #19 on the Billboard Contemporary jazz Charts, the CD contains spellbinding remakes of such classics as "Walk On By", "Bluesette", and "'Round Midnight" plus two Fields originals: "Open Your Heart" and "Five Two Blues". The latter was written as a tribute to the legendary Joe Williams and the golden age of Swing. "Open Your Heart" is a response to the tragedy of September 11.

"52nd Street", recorded in September, 2001 at Blue Cherry Studios in San Jose, CA, follows the criticial success of Victor's debut CD, "Promise" and features performances by Chris Camozzi, Nelson Braxton, Jeff Lorber, Mark Levine, Chris Botti, Gerald Albright and the Oakland Interfaith Youth Gospel Choir.

Tantalizing and Uplifting Music!!!.......2007-04-11

Victor Fields has illuminated the music genre with his CD, 52nd Street. The smooth blending of words and rhythm in the variety of songs on this CD is very relaxing. One must own this CD, listen to the music, and allow the melody to calm the mind. The first song on the CD, "Five-Two Blues," sets the pace for the rest of the songs. The tone of "And I Love Her," moves the melody to a higher stage. The words of "The Look of Love" transition the CD into high gear for the final song, "Open Your Heart." As we all know, it's never too late for love to resonate into an open heart. What a delightful way to close this CD with an excellent song. This is a must get CD for singing along with the heart warming music of Victor Fields.

Music That Focuses on the Artist.......2003-02-23

This CD is for a true fan of music not someone who goes for the hype of today's hottest artists who have a "hook" but lack real musical talent.

Victor's Field's handling of such classic songs as Walk On By and Send In The Clowns will leave you mesmerized. If you are someone who remembers those songs when they where being done by artist in the 60's and early 70's, like I do, you will love this CD. That is not to say that this CD is for the over forty crowd because the songs are fresh yet classic, at the same time. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I truly wanted more of the classics. I could have gone for an entire CD of classics sung by Mr. Fields. Get this CD if you appreciate true singers.

Like the companion set, Hittin' on All Six (jazz guitar), this collection brings together a wide range of excellent records that date from the earliest jazz recordings going up though early modern. Some of the selections are predictable, some are obscure, but they all are interesting. Lots of Sid Catlett, for example, and excellent choices on the big band side in particular (Cozy Cole, Jimmy Crawford and Jo Jones, to name three). No Lionel Hampton, but the fabulous cymbal beat of Alvin Burroughs with a Hampton small group. And of course, Chick Webb's Liza, which features wonderful drumming but also a really fine trumpet solo by Bobby Stark (the 2nd solo).
