Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All of their best songs, and I received them quickly........2007-05-13

I'm so impressed with this CD.
It's got all their greatest songs.

5 out of 5 stars all good.......2007-04-30

This cd set has all the familiar to US listeners songs, plus many that were not heard in USA, but they are all good, this cd set is an excellant value and a great pleasure to have and listen to.I highly recommend it for Herman fans and British invasion fans.

3 out of 5 stars Some hot... some not .......2007-01-06

There are some real gems on this CD but there are far too many duds in between. If you are interested in the whole range, it's worth hearing all the way through... once.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a listen.......2006-09-03

If you believe the insert notes to this album, and Noone and Whitwam's websites, the Hermits were third only to The Beatles and Stones in the pantheon of British sixties pop. Well, that's not how I remember it. In terms of critical acclaim and enduring public support, The Who, The Kinks, The Hollies and The Tremeloes were up there, while the Hermits were distinctly second league. That's nothing to be ashamed of, I'm just saying let's not exaggerate. They became big stars on both sides of the pond and sold over 50 million records, so they deserve attention, but let's not pretend they scaled the musical heights - they enjoyed a brief romp in the foothills.

They had just one British number 1. That was their first release, I'm Into Something Good. This Goffin/King song is very characteristic of the time, with its teen-love lyrics and catchy tune, and remains the trademark Hermits song. The other tracks are a mixed bunch. The arrangement and harmony singing on Years May Come, Years May Go are embarrassingly trite. Equally ludicrous are the ill-judged attempts to scramble onto the social comment bandwagon, with The Man With The Cigar and Here Comes the Star. But when they stick to tuneful, unpretentious pop, like I'm Into Something Good and Sunshine girl, they are well worth a listen. Track 8, disk 1 (Dream On Dream On) and track 21, disk 2 (I Gotta Dream On) is actually the same, the former being a remastered version. The Noone 1971 solo, Oh You Pretty Thing is interesting because it features the song's writer, David Bowie, on piano.

They were never Herman's Happy Hermits, as a look at the rival websites of Noone and Whitwam will testify. The Hermits were talented and wanted to progress musically. Instead, they remained the backing to Noone's frothy pop. Briefly, in the sixties, they billed themselves as Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits, betraying the behind-the-scenes disputes. Today, groups headed by Noone and Whitwam still appear separately and very confusingly as rival Herman's Hermits.

Peter Noone (Herman) was a child star of a British soap set in his native Manchester. His was a cheeky, cheerful, chirpy appeal, and any picture of him not grinning broadly would have been dismissed as a forgery. Last I heard, he was in a daytime soap stateside, and still going strong.

It was in Manchester that I saw actor Trevor Peacock in Waiting For Godot and it comes as quite a shock to learn that he wrote the Herman's hit Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter. This was one of a trio of quaintly British novelty songs - along with Leaning on a Lampost and I'm Henery the Eighth I Am - that were the mainstay of their US success but were quite rightly never released as singles in the UK. There, they would have been seen as old material that had already been performed better by other artists. George Formby fans in particular will consider the Herman's version of Lampost as nothing short of sacrilege.

It was another irritatingly cheerful Mancunian with a permanent grin and limited singing talent, Davey Jones of The Monkees, who spelled the end of the Hermits' US success. The market was not big enough for both of them.

Despite these negative comments, the Hermits were an essential part of the sixties scene and this is a comprehensive, good quality, good value collection of their work. So it gets 5 stars and a 'relax, enjoy it, but don't expect it to change your life' recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD FOR A GREAT 60;S BAND UNDERRATED.......2006-07-30

I'VE BEEN A HERMAN HERMITS' FAN SINCE THE MID-60'S AND ALTHOUGH I HAD 45'S AND ALBUMS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE, I REALLY WANTED TO FIND A GOOD CD THAT HAD ALL THOSE SONGS ON A AND B SIDES OF THOSE 45'S AND ALBUMS. I HAVE FOUND ALL OF THAT AND MORE ON THE "VERY BEST OF HERMAN HERMITS'".

And to those of you that haven't had the privilege of seeing Peter Noone in concert then or now, you should be very pleased after seeing the energy and fun the Herman and the (new) Hermits project live in concert. Well worth going to.

5 out of 5 stars Best songs Album.......2007-01-10

The songs are very rhythmic and dance able.

This collection of Herman's hermits hits is great and happy and some a little mellow.

A classic treasure of their music and times.

4 out of 5 stars What's here is good, but..........2006-09-01

What's here is good, but it is missing some of their hits like "Leaning On The Lamp Post", "Museum" and one of my favorites "Don't Go Out Into The Rain". It seems to be common practice when record companies release "greatest hits" collections to leave off a few hits and replace them with some forgettable album cut or B-sides that never received air-play. I don't understand what they are thinking when they do this. With 25 songs on this CD, they could have included ALL of their hits and still had room for some of their better non-hit songs. Their "Retrospective" CD is better.

4 out of 5 stars Herman's Hermits - 'Very Best Of Herman's Hermits' (EMI).......2006-06-19

As it turns out, this is the one-disc version of the 2-CD title of the same name, but with a different cover(see my review).A good collection of the British Invasion band's repertoire, but how many time must these labels put out 'best of' compilations? As I put the CD in my player,I checked out the twenty-five cuts,as usual, with a few of the highlights being "I'm Into Something Good","Wonderful World","Sunshine Girl","Dandy",etc.By today's standards, this is pretty innocent material.Pretty much aimed toward the completists.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous Charm.......2006-01-22

I well recall singing "Henry VIII" in the playground. It was the 1960s, and Herman's Hermits seemed to be everywhere: on the radio, on the jukebox, on home hi-fi stereos. It was a very popular band, so much so that it was often mentioned in the same breath with The Beatles--and indeed the two bands had a fair amount in common when they first began their careers. But where The Beatles would mutate with the passing years and grow into several unexpected directions, Herman's Hermits remained exactly what it had always been: a charming pop band with a fresh-faced and boyish-looking lead singer. His name was Peter Noone.

Truth be told, it was really Noone who made the band; although the rest of the boys certainly appeared on stage with Noone, they were seldom used to any extent in the recordings that made Herman's Hermits such an unqualified success on both sides of the Atlantic during the "English Invasion." Noone had a rather plantive voice with working-class accents and he gave his vocals a light touch, eschewing long notes, high notes, and other showy expressions--and the result was almost conversational and truly charming.

Then as now, tastes in music differed between England and America, and while Herman's Hermits scored numerous hits in both countries during the 1960s they were not always the same ones. This inexpensive compilation makes the best of worlds, presenting most of the bands hits regardless of on which side of the Atlantic they occurred. While both American and English listeners will recognize a good chunk of the songs, each will discover ones they never knew existed.

In terms of sound, the recordings date from the 1960s and they show it, but they've been brushed up quite a bit for this release and the result is a nice if not always top-notch sound. Whatever the case, it's all a lot of innocent, 1960s pop fun, and while it may not convert modern youth to the sound, those who recall the band's glory days will enjoy it greatly.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated........2005-08-18

This is the band that the Who blew off the stage on that 67' tour ...but in reality, Herman had better songs...THE WHO JUST HAD THE BETTER STAGE ACT...AND IN THE LONG RUN, WHAT THEY SAY IS TRUE....You gotta' knock em' dead Live !...but Herman gets my respect...lots a hit songs ...and even some angry punk like (sorta like the Turtles and Hollies) garage band rocking...NOW TRYING TO ROCK WITH THE WHO...NOW, THATS A BAD IDEA...and after that tour , little was really heard again from Herman...and lots was heard from the Who, still...I'll always like Herman...'NO MILK TODAY' AND 'LISTEN PEOPLE"....CRAPPY POP AT IT'S FINEST !...Really goes good on those sunday afternoons with the barbeque at 251 with the BH....alongside cool stuff from maybe Headquarters by Monkees...give your money to these guys at amazon...not Rap or some MTV pap like Coldplay.

1 out of 5 stars Another "ca-ca".......2005-06-21

Yes sir. This re-recordings are another 'basura'of Herman's Hermits. Why this guys has so many re-recordings?. You have to be very carefull when selecting what you want to buy it. I have thrown away two non-original HH CD.

2 out of 5 stars "Faithful Renditions".......2004-10-16

I can't tell you my disappointment to learn this was NOT Herman's Hermits, but close copies (and sometimes not so close). Guitar work is not the right sound for the times. Many songs are played faster than the originals. The quality is good; if you just like the songs you may be happy, but I am a musician and I wanted the originals- and this is not it.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive CD.......2006-10-30

The CD "The Vert Best of Hermans Hermits" finally offers a complete collection of all of their hits on a double
CD. There are so many classic album cuts that, that alone makes this CD one that you have to have in your
collection. You get all the hits in good sound quality. My only critique is that you still are unable to get their
music in stereo. Despite this one flaw, after listening to a few songs you become embellished in their music.
You forget that it is in mono because the songs are so good. You get 51 songs plus 5 bonus songs. This is
the only CD you will ever need by the Hermits. Buy it. You will be glad that you did. There numerous standout
songs that normally don't appear on their Greatest Hits packages, Dream on Dream On, Take Love Give Love,
For Love, Nobody Wants To Know, It's Allright Now, and I Gotta Dream On. Songs 13 & 14 on Disc 2 are presented in stereo.
