Mannfred Mann's Earth Band formed in 1971 and is a later incarnation of Mannfred Mann.

For the "charming original" of "The Mighty Quinn" get Mannfred Mann's Greatest Hits instead. I prefer the version here; it's from the "Watch" album.

The Earth Band had a lot of hit or miss material in the late '70's and '80's. I still drag out "Angel Station" from time to time and play a couple tracks from it, but I'd skip it unless you have time and money to blow to mine for the good stuff.

Get "Roaring Silence" and "Watch" and you've pretty much got their best.

yeah,yeah,yeah!!!i've always loved blinded by the light as i've been listening to that for about 3 years and i think it is one of my favorite songs really. BLINDED BY THE LIGHT,REVVED UP LIKE A DEUCE ANOTHER RUNNER IN THE NIGHT BLINDED BY THE LIGHT!!MANFRED MANN does it a lot better than BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

Very mistitled album, hardly the best of MMEB........2005-09-08

When I ordered this CD ages ago, it was the only Manfred Mann's Earth Band CD available here in the States. When it arrived, I was horrified to discover that as a "Best Of", it completely skips the first five MMEB albums, focusing instead on the "hits" from the later era of the band. How they could call this the best, when they completely ignore the classic "Solar Fire" album? Nothing from "The Good Earth", nothing from "Messin", "Glorified Magnified" nor their self-titled debut. If you can get past those glaring omissions, the songs that are here are all good. MMEB never really released a bad album between 1972 and 1980, so you can't go wrong with any of the material from that era. This is a nice collection for their biggest hits and it's usually very cheap, so definitely worth a listen. However, for the real deal, skip this and just buy "Solar Fire", "Nightengales & Bombers", and "The Good Earth". Those are the classics. Anyway, this is completely mistitled and almost criminally misleading. Not the best by a long shot. Buy and learn at your own risk.

Digitally Remastered Anthology Comprehensively Surveys the Entire Recording Career of One of the Most Endearing and Enduring Figures in Rock Music. The Tracks Date Back to 1964 with the Group Manfred Mann's First Single "5-4-3-2-1" to the Earth Band's Unique 2004 Version of the Super Furry Animal's Song "Demons" (Retitled as "Demons and Dragons"). It also Includes a Rare Recording by Mike D'abo of Manfred Mann of "Handbags and Gladrags", which He Composed and Became a Hit for Rod Stewart as Well as the Stereophonics a Generation Later as Well as Finding Fame as the Theme to the Hit TV Show "The Office" .

wow...thorough retrospective...........2007-01-12

considering Manfred Mann was much more of a chart success in the UK, this collection has all the hits a US audience will ever need, including Do Wah Diddy, The Mighty Quinn, and the full length 7 minute cut of Blinded by the Light. It also has some of the more minor radio hits of the late 70s and early 80s by the band, including Runner--which is, surprisingly, an edit that is a minute shorter than the LP version. The hard to come by Lies (through the 80s) is here as well. The only glaring omission is the song Make the World Go Round, another of his pseudo-synthpop tracks from the 80s era of music. While most of the music is broken into separate discs, 60s on CD 1, 70-80s on disc 2, there are also some odd newer recordings, like a 1997 cover of the new wave track "Pleasure and Pain," originally recorded by the Divinyls in the early 80s.

The mastering is excellent--but there are absolutely NO liner notes past the general track information. You'd think with such a career spanning set there would be some brief history inside.

Here is one of the more eclectic collections that devoted followers and new fans of Manfred Mann's Earth Band will truly appreciate. Chock filled with hit singles, rare b- sides and killer album tracks, Best of Volume Two 1972-2000 Remastered is a fine overview of a three decade hit making career. As a wonderful companion piece to the Warner/Rhino hits compilation from a few years ago, Best Of Volume Two covers the whole history of the band from 1972 to recent recordings from this decade. As a deep and thoughtful collection for the fans, Manfred Mann and Co. truly delivered some important music over the years as supported by the great line up of songs on this CD.

For starters, you get the Bob Dylan interpretations that only Mann could make his own: The rare single version of "Father of Night, Father of Day" makes it's appearance here from the classic Solar Fire from 1974. From Glorified Magnified, the rare 1972 single "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" debuts for the first time in over three decades his North America audience. How about a live reading of "The Times They Are A Changing" from the recent Mann Alive double disc set, as well as the first time North American release of "Shelter From The Storm" from his European only release Soft Vengance.

Being an astute musician and songwriter for many years, Manfred Mann knew how to discover new talent with his many fine interpretations over his decades of work. Al Stewart's "Eyes Of Nostadamus" receives the five star techno treatment originally found on the long out of print 1982 Somewhere in Afrika album. Manfred Mann's Earth Band's most successful chart topping effort, The Roaring Silence is represented with the fan favorite "Singing The Dolphin Through." Complete with Chris Thompson's vocals and the song writing expertise of Mike Heron.

In addition to the above song titles, Mann reached into the vaults and found b-sides like Tribute from 1972, a very rare 12" version of the Eddie and The Hot Rods' "Do Anything You Wanna Do" from the rare Criminal Tango album. Also, one of the more requested rarities is the hard to find version of "Joybringer" from 1987's Masque album.

Rare and album tracks.......2006-12-28

On this set, B sides, rare tracks, alternate versions, and album tracks are gathered. There's a number of Dylan covers as all the Springsteen covers were on Volume 1. One can easily about argue about the selections and ommissions (Where's "Be Not Too Hard", "Solar Fire" "Circle") as well as the versions chosen but there's still a whopping 80 minutes of very good music here. Fans of MMEB will surely enjoy this.

There was nothing wrong with the album, but I was expecting more of the older style of Manfred Mann. Most of the cuts semmed to me to be more of the early 70's power rock long riff style. OK, but not what I was looking for.
