5 out of 5 stars thank goodness this cd is in my life.......2007-04-03

My story with this CD begins with my friend and I going to a high-end audio store pretending that we were going to actually buy something. My friend had worked in a recording studio for a couple years, so he knew the ins and outs of what the guy was saying, but I just stood there drooling over all the pretty things I could neither understand nor afford. Near the end of the tour, the two of us and the saleman went into a room with a couple chairs, a recliner, a couple amazing looking turntables, and a set of speakers in the front of the room. Of all the CDs, my friend pulls this one out. After making sure the speakers were perfectly balanced (of course I couldn't tell the difference) we popped in the CD. I nearly fell off my seat. Then my friend offered the recliner to me, which was situated directly in front center of the speakers. I had NEVER heard anything so beautful in my life. It made me tear up right there in the store.

I love this whole CD, from that amazing harmonica to the percussion spectacle in the middle of "Desire". My friend was right in saying that he's ruined me for life. The production and emotion of this album can only be truly appreciated blasted on decent headphones or speakers. One part of me wants to buy a bazillion copies of this and air-drop it over the world so everyone can hear it, but another part of me likes having it as my own personal gem. An incredible piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Not your mamas new wave! .......2007-03-27

Talk Talk to many are remembered as a sort of Fixx-like new wave synth rock band with their big hit Its my life and a few others. What many people dont realize is that TAlk TAlk ditched their "new wave" sound and dove headfirst into ambient freeform art rock with classical overtones and produced two of the best albums of the last 20 years- and in the case of Spirit of Eden the best sounding and most uncommercial pop record of the eighties. THe first song or piece here is over 20 minutes- moving from hushed ambient rock into almost jazzlike like moodiness(think Miles Davis ala In a silent way). The music weaves in a dark underbelly of despair and redemption with Singer Mark Hollis's odd mixed low voice rising and falling at the right times. The effect is stunning- but dont expect instant satisfaction. This is an album that needs to be listened to in the darkness or a sunday morning with ears and mind wide open. The whole mood is downtempo- sometimes bleak but always uplifting. Its littered with guest musicians and exotic and classical instruments- great fretless bass and brush drums. Sprit of Eden is TAlk Talk's masterwork which is just slightly better than the very similiar Laughingstock- another excellent album and the bands swansong. Seriously- you wont even think this is the same band and in many ways they no longer wore. A desert island disc without a doubt.

5 out of 5 stars this is the one.......2007-02-21

This is the album. Back in the 80's, there was a "Talk Talk" album that I LOVED! I remember it to be "It's My Life", which is a terrific album, but when I came back to this album, I realized that this was my cherished album by Talk Talk.

If you at all familiar with "It's My Life", please do buy this album right away. "It's My Life" is the detail painting for "Spirit of Eden". That feeling you get from the songs on "It's My Life", those feelings are refined and poured into a romantic, modern vessel of aural beauty. As I listen to it at this very moment, I wonder at its beauty.

There's a beautiful plaintive appeal to the singer's voice that the listener appreciates as s/he realizes how few vocals there are on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-02-01

My friend let me borrow her CD. She said to listen to it at around 10pm at night, in candlelight or with the lights dimmed. She said it would change my life. :) Not quite sure about that, but this CD is great! And all of the other top reviews for it helped convince me to get my own copy. Glad I did. Thanks, to the reviewers, and my 'noid friend LS. :)

5 out of 5 stars Visceral, Cathartic, and Sublime.......2006-12-08

I'm reticent to give away five stars to any album. I find we tend to overidolize music and neglect the richness of such a wide field with our petty squabbling over uncritical simplifications like "good" versus "bad." However, "Spirit of Eden" rises above the pack and warrants attention as a classic work of music. Normally I'd discuss music on its own merits, but I'm given to understand that the mastermind behind the album Mark Hollis has stated that work is derivative by nature.

The first section is a twenty-three minute long monstrosity called "The Rainbow / Eden / Desire" that dominates the album. As I listen to the album, by the time the last note of Desire fades away I'm in a total meditative state for the duration of the last three tracks. There's little point in even attempting description of the music without resorting to simile.

Pretty much any serious listener can tell you the same thing. I hear Miles Davis and his rythmic organic compositions. I hear Kevin Shields and his whispered lyrics and screaming noise. I hear Brian Eno and his self-conscious introspection. I hear vintage Pink Floyd and another little twenty-three minute long beast called "Echoes." I hear Vangelis and Yes and their inability to go quietly into a box. I hear nameless blues masters lost to the mists of time. "Spirit of Eden" is all these people and none of them. It's as if a fertile soil was planted with these musical seeds, and what grew from them twisted together into a tree called "Spirit of Eden."

The album isn't perfect. But that's not important. What's important is that the music has been crafted well enough to accept its own flaws. It is a masterpiece; visceral, cathartic, and sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Best way to collect Talk Talk.......2006-11-18

For those of you who know Talk Talk only by their radio hit It's My Life, you have missed out on one of the most progressively artistic bands of the era. Their music constantly evolved with each album. The artistic depth on these albums is really worth experiencing. This collection is probably the best way to get 60% of Talk Talk's album collection at a manageable price. Here's a break down of the albums:

It's My Life - Obviously this is the album that has the hit single on it. While I can say by a margin IT'S MY LIFE is the best song on the album, it isn't the only great song on this album. This is the album where Tim Friese-Greene came into the picture and introduced some amazing musical techniques using instruments to simulate environmental noises (remember those seagull sounds on It's My Life?). Add to that some nice layers of instruments and you get songs that you can really lose yourself in. SUCH A SHAME and IT'S YOU are aggressive sounding. TOMORROW STARTED and RENEE are dark and moody with themes similar to Talk Talk's first album. Then you have fun songs like the reggae vibe in DOES CAROLINE KNOW and THE LAST TIME. All in all a very lush range of moods and music.

The Colour of Spring - Here the band starts moving away from the new wave/new romantic synth-pop genre and into something much more progressive and ambient. The switch to a more acoustic sound actually fits in very well with the band's sensibilities. LIFE'S WHAT YOU MAKE IT is the Phil Collins-esque anthem song that hits heavy with the drums and guitar (great song to get your night on the town started) and LIVING IN ANOTHER WORLD is a big as life number with a more upbeat tempo. You also get songs that play up the instrumental ambience with HAPPINESS IS EASY and CHAMELEON DAY. All in all I consider this album Talk Talk's best.

Spirit of Eden - This album is a pretty big departure from any album they did previously. It's very avantgarde and ambient with it's intense focus on subtle sound textures and dynamic range. I admit this album isn't for everybody. However I BELIEVE IN YOU is still a very approachable and laid back song and DESIRE gives you a nice double play by being laid back and then very aggressive all in one song.

I'm rather picky with my music, and when I see the words "remastered" I expect some real remastering. Many remasters don't do much more than adjust the midrange and kick up the overal volume (original recordings done back in the 80's called for a boosted midrange to get a better sound out of vinyl records). Not so in this collection. While the improvemements vary from CD to CD it is to be sure that what you are getting a true remastering of the original source.

Of all the albums on this collection I believe It's My Life benefits the most with the new remastering. This album was the one mastered for vinyl and the original CD was a little muddy in the midrange and really needed a clean up. There is a night and day difference with this remaster, which I am so very happy about. Colour of Spring and Sprit of Eden both had enhanced mastering back when they were released so the remastering isn't as noticeable, however the subtle improvements are there. Be rest assured, though, all that means is all three albums come out crystal clear and full of high fidelity. You're getting the best masters on this collection.

Listen for yourself. I challenge any of you who do not know Talk Talk to check out some samples of their music. If it sounds appealling then it would be in your best interest to get this collection. The remastering alone makes it worth it, especially for It's My Life. You'll thank me once you get these CD's, put them in a good stereo system and lose yourself in the music.

5 out of 5 stars Remastered box set - The way to go.......2001-06-01

Quite a steal, especially since the remastered albums are not available in the U.S. My old copies of these CD's have found a new home on the shelves at the Used CD store. These three, along with Laughing Stock (a non-EMI release, are indispensable. They cover the evolution of the band as they progressively strayed from the pop-huckster-wannabe sensibilities which dominated their self-titled debut, eventually building pieces which are more about atmosphere than recycled Duran Duran cliches. This is exactly the style of music which benefits from a top notch remastering job. I also highly recommend London 1986, a live CD from this period. Amazing that this band could not only replicate, but exceed, what was done in the studio.

4 out of 5 stars Second album from indie proggers.......2006-08-28

Images of Eden started out as a one-man project years ago, led by Gordon Tittsworth. However, it slowly grew and turned into a real band with the addition of several members over the years. The band released their independent debut Chapter I in 2001, and after that in 2003, they released a three-track demo called Beyond the Horizon, all of which made it onto their new release Sunlight of the Spirit. Of these three songs, "Beyond the Horizon" is a groovy number, utilising plenty of rhythm changes, light-heavy dynamics, acoustic guitars, keyboards, soaring vocals, and melodic guitar lines. "Aladdin" is comparatively uneventful in the way that is serves as a precursor to the album's huge "Spirit of the Sunlight" trilogy. Still, it is important because of its bluesy hard rock leanings and keyboard-generated atmosphere. On the other hand "I Remember When" has been chosen as the middle chapter of their three-form trilogy.

Without doubt, the three pieces that constitute the title track are ambitious and offer a rather different aspect of Images of Eden whose first album was more hard rock with progressive touches. On their new disc, the band uses perfect synth work by Dennis Mullin. "Part I - Emerald Rain" boasts a great orchestration, nice organ sounds, unusual percussion, and a very impressive delivery by Tittsworth. However, the second part is the centrepiece of this long composition. The drumming is tight and the vocals very emotive. They actually evoke Blackie Lawless circa The Crimson Idol (which is a very good thing!) and Gordon Tittsworth's voice works quite well in a tasty symphonic landscape. The piece is finalised with the atmospheric "Part III - Through October Skies", featuring lush acoustic guitars, subtle keyboard layerings, and an overall solemn mood.

The first half of the album is more hard-rocking, with tracks like "Kaleidoscope" that harkens back to the band's earlier days and the catchy "To Live Another Day", highlighted by a melodic interplay between guitars and keyboards. On "Dream-Catcher", the band is at its best. Clocking in at over eight minutes, the song begins with solo piano, picks up acoustic guitars and searing electric leads respectively, with lots of 80's style AOR synths woven in the mix. The meticulous production shines, as nicely plucked acoustic guitar underpin multi-instrumentalist Gordon Tittsworth's guitars and powerful vocal harmonies. There's even a great bass walk at the very end of the piece following a peaceful piano break in the middle.

Images of Eden have improved a lot since their debut. This is decidedly a more progressive release, but still highly melodic and hard-rocking. You need to check them out if you've never heard their music before.

I love the songs on this CD. Sister Renetha is an anointed woman of God and singer. I love her voice and the music behind it.If you like Gospel Music, you should get this. When I listen to the CD, I feel like God takes away the troubles and worries and fills my room with calminess, peace and happiness. These are the reasons why I listen to this CD almost EVERYDAY! I will rate the following songs:

1.THE LORD REIGNTH: I give it a 5/5 because the song makes you want to sing, clap your hands, and dance.

2.HALLEJULAH FOR THE LORD OUR ALMIGHTY REIGNS: I also give this song a 5/5 because of how the song flows and has a tune to it that also makes you want to sing, clap your hands and dance.

3.OH GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD: I give this song a 5/5 because I love hearing it.

4.EVERYDAY WITH JESUS: I give this song a 6/5 because I think this is a beautiful song and I enjoy singing along with it. This is my favorite song.

5.SWEET HONEY ON THE ROCK: I also give this song a 6/5 because this song is beautiful as well. I sing along with it.

6.PRAISE TO THE KING: I give this song a 6/5 because this song is peacefully and beautiful. I enjoy sing with it as well as hearing that I push the search button more than once. This is my second favorite song.

7.FEET ON THE ROCK: I give this song a 5/5 because I love the words and the tune to it.

8.YOU ARE MY EVERYTHING: I give this song a 7/5 because I LOVE this song. I love the words and how Sister Renetha sings it as well as the tune. It is so peaceful that whenever I have a bad day, I put the CD in and immediately go to Track 8 (this song). There are times I feel a sense of calmness and sometimes I fall asleep to this song and wake up feeling peaceful and great. Out of all these songs, this is my most favorite song.
