For the casual fan, The Essential Billy Joel still does the trick. However, this five-disc set rewards fans who have stuck by the Piano Man through the last four decades. Packed with 66 tracks, 23 previously unreleased, My Lives includes rare solo demos, b-sides, soundtrack hits, unexpected cover songs and plenty of blackmail material. Before hitting his stride as a hugely successful pop artist, it turns out Joel put in time with psychedelic rockers (Lost Souls), pseudo R&B players (the Hassles) and a prog-metal duo (Attila). It's all here. What this collection reveals is that despite his fairly consistent mainstream output the singer never stopped experimenting. There is a reggae version of "Only The Good Die Young," a soulful reading of Leonard Cohen's "Light as the Breeze," supper club jazz with Duke Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood," even classical interludes from his later years. There's room to grumble about what did and didn't make the cut, particularly with the stray album cuts, but this is a great testament to the range and restless spirit of the songwriter. The DVD features a 1993 concert filmed in Hamburg. --Aidin Vaziri

For the serious Billy Joel collector/Fanatic.......2007-02-20
If this set was targeted for the serious collector, which I think it is, I don't see why we would need the album studio tracks of some songs such as innocent man, still rock 'n roll, since any fanatic of Billy Joel would have these songs on their original albums, and remasterd CDs, or even the great compilation.
In short, this box is for Billy Joel fanatics. Others would be served with "1973-97-Complete Hits Collection" much better.
Not that great.......2007-02-08
Add to this the fact that many of the tunes that are here are easily found on his "Greatest Hits" CDs, and that true fans of his work will *already have that.*
Another thing that was not necessary was the last disc that included a lot of his live performances. His live performances (to put it charitably) leave a lot to be desired.
There are things that you can't find on here, like "Why Should I Worry?", but this CD is MOST DEFINITELY not worth the purchase price if new and *just barely* worth the purchase price second hand.
The Rest of the Story.......2007-01-09
Billy Joel's musical life.......2006-10-04
Simply Awesome.......2006-07-27
I've always looked at Billy Joel's career as having three phases. The first phase is what I call "Old Billy Joel". This basically includes all of his material from "Cold Spring Harbor" through "Turnstiles". These are perhaps the strongest days as the piano sound, but they also contain most of Joel's least heard material. The next phase is what I call "Middle Billy Joel". This was his most successful period and covers from "The Stranger" to "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume 1 and 2". Joel would go through a transition during this phase - expanding his musical horizons and exploring different avenues. The final phase is the "Later Billy Joel" phase - this covers "The Bridge" to "River of Dreams". "My Lives" actually extends this by including what I call "Pre Billy Joel" - materials from the 1960s with "60s" bands he was associated with. It also includes material from Joel's classical album, "Fantasies and Delusions".
There is so much that this collection has to offer. Here are nine highlights to look out to:
1. The pre-Billy Joel material really gives us a good feel for Billy's roots in Rock. The early songs that make up the first 5 tracks demonstrate Billy's roots in "60s Rock" (psychedelic, R&B, Beatle-sque). These tracks include Billy as part of other bands (The Lost Souls, The Hassles,Attila)
2. Perhaps the strongest point of this set are the "Alternative Versions of Songs". These are recordings with different lyrics and titles that became Billy Joel classics and songs released on albums. Included in this collection are" "New Mexico" (became "Worse Comes to Worst"); "These Rhinestone Days" (became "I Loved These Days"); "The End of the World" (became the B-side "Elvis Presley Blvd"); "The Prime of Your Life" (became "The Longest Time"); and "Motorcycle Song" (became "All About Soul"). I think "Motorcycle Song" is the best of the group.
3. Another strong point are "Alternate Takes of Songs". These are modified demo versions from an arrangement and melody standpoint. Included in this collection are: "Piano Man"; "Miami 2017"; "Only the Good Die Young"; "Christie Lee"; "And So It Goes"; "I Go to Extremes"; "Keeping the Faith" (a 12-inch version); and "The River of Dreams".
4. One thing many people may not realize is how strong a cover artist Billy Joel is. "Shout", "All Shook Up", "A Hard Day's Night", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Hey Girl", and "When You Wish Upon a Star" are the strongest covers that are included. Despite not including the "whole song", "Shout" might be the best cover Billy has done.
5. The live DVD from "The River of Dreams" tour is very good. It focuses on more of Billy's material from the second half of his career. The video quality is outstanding. I really enjoyed the inclusion of "No Man's Land" - an underrated track. Billy picking up the guitar for "We Didn't Start the Fire" and "A Hard Day's Night" is amazing. The only negative is that the disc doesn't show enough of Billy's sense of humor that he normally demonstrates in concert.
6. The collection does include several album cuts. I'm not sure if they are put in for filler or not, but with the exception of "It's Still Only Rock and Roll to Me" - these are cuts that haven't been seen on any previous "greatest hits" collections.
7.The 4th Disc includes a "hidden track". Billy has always demonstrated a sense of humor and this "hidden track" is a promo from 1980 for his "Glass Houses" album that I found very entertaining.
8.When it comes to Billy's work with Elton John, there isn't much out on the marketplace. It was nice they included live duets of "You May Be Right" and "A Hard Day's Night" with Elton John. (It should be noted that "A Hard Day's Night" was recorded in Frankfurt and is included on the DVD, but the DVD version doesn't have Elton John).
9.A good boxed set is always going to include a good booklet and "My Lives" is no exception. There is a detailed discography of the tracks as well as a list of awards. There also superb write-up on Billy by Anthony DeCurtis as well as some testimonials by people who knew Billy.
This "anthology"-style collection is as good as it gets. This collection not only will keep the serious Billy Joel fan happy, but even keep the casual fan entertained. Highly recommended.

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.
I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...
good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24
Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29
The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.
When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.
Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

Modern worship for youth and adults.......2007-05-16
Nothing is quite original on this album but it still moves the soul, which is often enough for any worship project. "Endlessly" makes its way onto this album in a much more laid back fashion, and "Promises" retains its pop song feel. "Here In Your Presence" is another noteworthy song in the line of increasingly popular 3/4 rock ballads; it runs over eleven minutes and ends on a swelling repetition of the bridge. "Live to Worship" is perhaps the album's strongest song -- a simple worship ballad that sounds like it's been done, but its familiarity and melodic strength are to its advantage.
The album could've used a few more fast songs, and strangely, I noticed the drummer simply did not know how to accentuate any of the music. It seemed as though the drummer had never heard any of the songs before and decided to go with the easiest beat possible, which takes away from the dynamics and actually hurts the album's energy. If you make side-by-side comparisons of "Endlessly" and "Promises" with their original counterparts, the difference is too obvious to ignore. Still, the postproduction work with strings and keyboards really polishes the live performances without being distracting.
Bottom line -- Apart from its lack of originality and a decent drummer, this album is still worth buying because it's certainly better than a lot of worship out there. If you're looking for some new songs for your praise team at church, give this one a try.

Just buy this disc. Just go and buy it now. You're not bloody going to find it with any amount of ease or struggle, let me tell you, I hunted high and low before buying it off Amazon as being one of the less taxing options...
The second disc of remixes is worth the price of admission alone. Especially the FBH's remix of Homeless Club Kids, and Phofo's remix of Le Monster.
I can't stop singing these songs to myself especially the "dark shimmering jewel" of the entire two disc set "Burning Hearts" because you could be DEAD and this song will make you weep and dance and be sad and happy all at once....
So to quote the wonderful Dawn French, "I bow to thee." My Favorite.

Disney Always Rocks.......2005-09-29
Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19
For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.
There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.
This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."
Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

Customer Reviews:
The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02
Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.
The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.
