I have the original 1988 tape but wanted to get it now on CD
for many reasons: TAKE THAT LOOK OFF YOUR FACE (Martie Webb)( ALL I ASK OF YOU (Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman) THE MAGICAL MR MISTOFFELLEES (Paul Nicholas) VARIATIONS (Julian Lloyd Webber) MNEMORY (Elaine Paige - how could Barbara Streisand possibly render this any better) TELL ME ON A SUNDAY (Marti Webb), ANOTHER SUITCASE IN ANOTHER HALL (Barbara Dickson)
What a huge disappointment that these marvellous renditions have not been transferred to CD. Does anyone know why, or better still how I can get a copy.

Streisand's rendition of MEMORY has always been my favorite version of the song outside of the show...Betty Buckley's is my favorite within the show. I am a Streisand afficiando, and this is my FAVORITE Streisand song period..so it must be good...
Michael Ball singing anything is wonderful...It captures the wonderful feeling of being on a cloud when you listen to this album

Has no one else noticed that on the version of this CD produced in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada "Past the Point of No Return" from "The Phantom of the Opera" is NOT Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman? The male is obviously Colm Wilkenson (most famous for originating the role of Jean Valjean), apparently the soprano is Rebecca Caine?

If you are an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, you probably already own some of the versions of songs on this CD. Having them all in one package is nice. I like to listen to this at work, as I know the music so well that it is nice background. I could do without Amigos Para Siempre.

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.

This is the second in Ron Raines series of Broadway Classics. It is just as beautiful as his first one. Close your eyes when you listen to him and you will believe that you are in a theater. You won't be disappointed if you like Broadway! The more I listen to Ron Raines sing, the better I like him. I hope he will make a new CD soon. He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection

What a delightful Surprise.......2004-12-15

Last weekend I attended a Winter concert at our local college featuring Spencer Brewer(pianist) and Alex De Grassi(guitarist) whom I really enjoy listening to. During the concert, a guest performer presented two songs to the audience. The surprisingly delightful performer was Alisa Fineman. I really found myself enjoying her music. During the intermission I purchased two of the "Closing the Distance" albums. One of them was for me, the other for my Pastor who loves the Jewish Culture.
Right now I have the CD on, and am listening to it for the first time. I am really enjoying the music. It is peaceful and meditative. Alisa has a wonderful voice for this music. I advise people to purchase this CD.

Sons and Daughters have performed with some pretty big names in indie rock, with Decemberists, the Fiery Furnaces and fellow Scots Franz Ferdinand. What do these bands have in common? Aside from sharing a nationality with Franz Ferdinand.... absolutely nothing.

This energetic Scottish band debuted with "Love the Cup," which let the world have a taste of their music, with the energy of a volcanic garage band and the infectious sound of Celtic folk gone punk. There really isn't any other band with a comparable sound.

It kicks off with a dancing drum beat, joined by a droning guitar and sinuous female vocals. "Fight" levels out into a sort of bombastic folk that is rough, dancey and intense, enough that getting into it is exhausting. Yes, as you can guess, it's about a fight. But somehow it never sounded so appealing.

They quiet down a bit from there on, but that simmering sound is always about ready to erupt. No, "Johnny Cash" sounds nothing like the late man in black's work, and it doesn't focus on him, but it is the peak of this album -- tightly played, with razor-sharp guitars and explosive singing by Scott Paterson.

A few songs even reflect the Celtic folk roots of this band, with soft acoustic guitar, mandolin and a tambourine. Guitarist/singer Adele Bethel sounds softer and more relaxed in these songs. Then it's back to the bluesy, folky rock'n'roll, whisky-soaked and ready to throw a punch.

It's a long EP, and well-worth buying for the price tag it has, since every song here is worth listening to. "Love the Cup" has no fillers, no cutesiness, no pretensions, no trends, and no slick appeals for radioplay. It's just a rough, raw slice of rock'n'roll.

Anyone who has heard Celtic folk will recognize the jiggy rhythms that make you want to dance, with handclaps, sharp drums and fast riffs. But this is not cheery music, with its sparsely-worded lyrics about fighting, death and melancholy. It's ominous and rough, and it makes you feel that way even as you tap your feet to it.

This is also one of those bands that harmonizes male and female vocals. Bethel is paired with Paterson, who usually does backing harmony. He does lead in one song, with Bethel bursting in in the middle. And harmonization becomes dizzying as they sing "You're in my blood/blood/my blood," their voices interplaying beautifully.

Anyone who loves raw, pure rock'n'roll will be bowled over by the debut EP for Sons and Daughters. "Love the Cup"? Oh yeah, lads and lasses.

Mighty Fine.......2005-04-20

A truly potent album which captures the ferocity of a ten-man drunken pub brawl. Buyers may also like the Republic of Loose album "This Is the Tomb of the Juice". Irish rather than Scottish (although you would swear S&D came from Ireland anyway), they are more funky and just as raucous. Perfect drunken debauchery for your ears!

Mix the following:

One part resurrected disco beat.
Two parts Scottish vocals (one male and one female).
Two parts Indie rock (with significant influences from the White Stripes and is that Pink Floyd I can hear?)

These lads and lasses from the north of the British Isles are just really really good, and worth more than a casual listen.

Great debut!.......2005-02-21

What a great EP by this band from the land of Franz Ferdinand. Although they sound nothing like them, Sons and Daughters gained some notoreity as their opening act on parts of FF's recent tour. I must warn you that contrary to others' remarks, Sons and Daughters sound nothing like White Stripes. They are actually doing a very faithful tribute to Th Faith Healers UK and maybe there is a little early Verbena, as they are somewhat countrified. Great EP, worth the gamble, the kind of cd that you play again as soon as it's over.

One of the 10 best CDs of 2004.......2005-01-19

Sometimes less is more. Sons and Daughters, a quartet of experienced Scots (including two former members of Arab Strap) are expected to put out a full-length CD in 2005, but the band will have a tough time topping this seven-song, 25-minute debut disc. Putting a country twist on the garage-rock minimalism of the White Stripes, Sons and Daughters gives you a sense of what might have happened if Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash had recorded an album after spending a few months listening to nothing but PJ Harvey CDs.

Jazz meets island music.......2005-09-14

I first heard only 'Lujon' from this album, then a snippet of the album on the band's website. 'Lujon' is a masterful piece, utterly transporting the listener to an island paradise. There is a Benny Goodman cover tune, wonderfully done; a cabaret vocal that will make you smile each time, the title track; an intro and an ending, all marvelously performed. After 3 weeks of owning this CD, it is still loaded in my 3 disc player, ready to go at a moment's click -- and off I'll go to a bygone era -- and my own tropical paradise! I highly recommend this CD!

Light hearted, fun, poignant, charming. Highly recommend........1999-04-01

Including songs from the light hearted and fun to the poignant, this CD is a treasure that should not be missed by those loving the classic Broadway musical sound. Two voices (Karen Ziemba, currently Roxie Hart in Chicago, and David Garrison, currently in Titanic) and a Steinway piano partner in this recording, and the blend of Ziemba's and Garrison's voices is perfect. The versatility of Ziemba's voice throughout this recording is most impressive, In addition to being an extraordinary dancer, Ziemba once again proves herself an exceptional singer. Garrison is terrific as well. If you like "darker" musicals, avoid this. But if you want to hear an up-tempo musical score that will make you tap your toes and if you want to hear two voices that can be listened to again and again with the same initial pleasure, get this recording.

Full Title - The Columbia Albums Of Irving Berlin Vols. 1 & 2. Composer, conductor, arranger Frank DeVol scored more than fifty movies and is best known as the composer for the theme songs for the TV series 'My Three Sons', 'The Brady Bunch' and 'Family Affair'. In the 1940s DeVol was an arranger for Dinah Shore, Tony Bennett, Rudy Vallee, Vic Damone and Doris Day. Frank DeVol received multiple Emmy Awards and Academy Award nominations for his extensive body of work. Irving Berlin's medleys featured are 'Always/Remember', 'A Pretty Girl/Isn't It A Lovely Day' and 'Say It With Music/Cheek To Cheek'. 24 tracks. Collectables 2003.
