Ugly Americans may be on the wane, but various survivors of the Austin alt-pop outfit do turn out to support frontman Bob Schneider on this solo effort. Lonelyland showcases Schneider's competing interests as a singer-songwriter (nice Elvis Costello-like melodic turns of "Big Blue Sea") and Southern white-boy rapper (most notably on the swampy "Bullets"). But things get really strange on "The World Exploded into Love," on which a sub-Barenaked Ladies spiel is paired with full-blown female operatic accompaniment. Schneider, it turns out, is the son of an opera singer, so the song makes sense biographically, if not musically. While fans of Schneider's prior outfits (Joe Rockhead, Ugly Americans, and the Scabs) will likely find things to love on this album, Lonelyland sounds like the work of a solo artist who's still finding his own voice. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars One of the top Five CD's I own, and I have ALOT........2006-09-07

This is GREAT disc. There are only a couple of songs that aren't really really good. Oddly, 'Metal and Steel' is the song that was released on the radio in my market and is one of my least favorites. 'Bullets' is a live show favorite that he's covered many ways. '2002' is maybe his best and most intimate ballad. 'Big blue Sea' predates all the Jack Johnson surfer dude vibe. 'The world exploded into Love", "Moon Song", and "Madeline" are really beautiful melodies. And all this from the guy who brought you 'Hangin' out with the horney girls" etc. There are other songs in his wide and prolific repetior that I like as much or more, but this is his high water mark so far and the best solo disc to start with if you don't own any yet. And if that's the case, you need to take corrective action and go git yourself some right away.

5 out of 5 stars I Travel With This CD.......2006-07-16

I have had Lonelyland since the year it came out. I heard Bullets on streaming radio and was driven to find more by Bob. I couldn't so I bought the cd the same day. I fell in love with it immediately. It's a perfect blend of good singing (you can feel his voice) and great music. It is one of my favorites and it (well a copy of it) travels everywhere I do. The lyrics can stand alone as poetry on almost all the songs.

Under my skin I'm all wet
Under my skin I'm all bloody
Under my skin my heart lies broken
And my mind is acting funny

In an industry that is plagued by copycat samplers and illiterate buffoons someone with talent can get lost in the muck. I'm glad he has managed to keep his head above it all.

5 out of 5 stars WITH A BULLET.......2005-11-23

This is the real thing. Bob's a true talent. He's got the chops on guitar as well as voice. And quite the wordsmith a la Elvis Costello, Mike Doughty or Steve Earle. AND he can rap as well! A very well rounded, seasoned artist without the MTV crap that goes along with it, thank God! This CD is quite an accomplishment, with not a bad song in the bunch. My faves are Bullet, Big Blue Sea, Jingy, Round & Round, the amazing Under My Skin..Hell, the whole thing!! See this guy live as well to get what the big deal is about. His band kicks a** as well. Dangerous!!

5 out of 5 stars great tunes.......2005-06-12

first thing I ever heard from Bob, now I'm hooked. he is a must see show. rock on.

5 out of 5 stars Great eclectic mix!.......2005-06-07

I moved to Dallas from Austin about 5 years ago, and honestly, the thing that I miss the MOST is going to see Lonelyland shows - sitting front row in a little pub with regulars who knew every word!

While I'm not a huge fan of Bob's more provocative group The Scabs, I can still appreciate them musically. However, Lonelyland is a perfect blend of musicians with Bob at center stage. His gruff voice carries so much character. The lyrics are deep and not one-dimensional; they range from heartache to joyfullness to love, etc.

I have been baffled for many years as to why (other than musical billing in a few Sandra Bullock movies) he hasn't hit it bigger nationally. The sound of his music is so eclectic that you are sure to find at least one song that suits your musical taste buds (probably more). My personal favorites are Round and Round, and Bullets.

Listen to the samples, and then buy this CD! If you're anything like me, you'll wear it out.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!.......2004-09-25

Stumbled upon Bob's music recently and was astounded by the quality and diversity. Lonelyland is one fine CD and it is played constantly. Do yourself a favor and track down the "Texas" version with three bonus tracks. The over 10 minute "King Of The World" is absolutely amazing (and available to download at his web site for a nominal charge). Other favorites on the CD are Tokyo and Oklahoma, and the atmospheric "Grave of Senior Corizo" (bonus). You can't go wrong with this CD and will be following up with other Bob music. Particularly good are the CDs "Songs Sung and Played On Guitar At The Same Time", and "Underneath The Onion Trees" with rock/jazz guitarist Mitch Watkins.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Schneider is the boss!.......2001-12-16

Just went to Bob Schneider concert last night in Houston, and picked up this CD. The concert was excellent and so is the CD. It is certainly CONVENIENT to get it here online, though! Order the CD here.... Listen to the CD then go see him live on stage, what a show. The crowd didn't ever want the show to end. He is magnetic and charismatic and his talents on the guitar and vocals are unbelievable! A true Texas treasure! Now I am looking for his other music Taratula and Batman, hopefully they will be available on amazon soon.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Austin.......2001-12-05

Bob is easliy the best Austin artist around right now. Lonelyland is an excellent CD and shouldn't be overlooked by anyone. While I am also a big fan of his other projects (the Scabs and the Ugly Americans) I think this album is a big step forward in his maturation as an artist. From the slow ballads to the funky brass of the Groove Line Horns, this CD has it all. Honestly, though, if you really want to appreciate this music, you MUST see this band play live.

5 out of 5 stars A man that can do it all.......2001-09-26

Bob Schneider may not have the name of a rock star, but he's got the goods. This album is a taste of the kind of roller coaster he can take you on... from Metal & Steel to Tokyo, 2002 to Oklahoma. All that have seen him live know the explosion of music within this man, and the albums hold up very well. I've turned a few people on to his music, and it doesn't take much. I STRONGLY suggest you check out the Scabs and Ugly Americans if you want to hear the full range of his music. Lonelyland is only the begining.

4 out of 5 stars Finally Everyone Can Know.......2001-05-21

That Bob Schneider can rock, roll rap and cradle you all on one cd ! He is one of the least recognized musicians around! I mean in Texas we recognize him but it's time he burns up the radio with a catchy infectious song like "Metal and Steal". "Big Blue Sea" is great when your mellow and loving the world and no one can hear "2002" and not relate on some level. And when your ready to party put on "Bullets" and everyone will join in the chorus, lift their beers and dance right there in your apartment. I have seen this artist live almost 300 times over the last ten years. This Cd is wonderful but live is truly a unique experience! Check him out if he comes to your town. We all complain about the cheesy music of the bubble gum pop stars! Only you can help make radio better! Buy this CD! Start a trend don't follow one!

5 out of 5 stars Few artists can deliver such diversity with quality results........2001-05-20

Bob Schneider's major label debut, Lonelyland, is difficult to categorize. A little roots rock, a good dose of blues, some funk and soul, a singer-songwriter bent... Think G. Love, Jude and John Wesley Harding... Or just follow the "music" link on Schneider's web site and spin samples of each song. Listen to the catchy pop of Metal and Steel, the Philly-soul of Big Blue Sea, the grunge rock of Jingy, the funk of Bullets, the atmospheric rock of The World Exploded in Love... you get the idea. This guy does it all, and he does it all well.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD from a Great Texas Artist........2001-04-04

I was lucky enough to get ahold of a promotional cd the end of last year and have been fasinated with this award winning artist ever since. I even bought The Scab's CD and one of his earlyer ones. I also went to see him and he is awsome. From the first chord of Big Blue Sea, I was hooked. A lot of it is however an aquired taste. Big Blue Sea and Metal and Steel being two major exceptions. These songs hook you instantly. The only reason that I gave it only 3 stars is that I never give anything over 4 because no cd (in my opinion) is perfect (although after a few listens this one comes close) and since some songs have to grow on you I choose 3. A lot are more mellow like 2002 but after 3 listens I ashure you will love these as well.

It's totally worth it!!!!
