Amazon.com essential recording
In Step embraces blues and rock without compromising the primal joys of either. This is Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album and the first he recorded sober. "Travis Walk" offers a heady rush of flat-picking, "The House is Rockin'" is full-tilt roots-boogie, "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone" are sweet blues epiphanies, and the nine-minute instrumental "Riviera Paradise" is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By now, just a year before his untimely death, Vaughan had also tamed his bawling voice into a rich instrument. In short, this 1989 session is Vaughan at his artistic peak. And the four compelling live performances added to this reissue--"The House Is Rockin'," "Let Me Love You Baby," "Texas Flood," and "Life Without You," all from the In Step tour--prove there was no studio trickery involved. It's raw blues-rock perfection. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars excelent remastered.......2007-05-15

This album with 5 unreleased bonus trucks is an album that should be in any one cd's collection , the live version " Let me love you baby " is excellent played ,Steve Ray Vaughan was a master player.

5 out of 5 stars im not a kid, im 16 i just dident know my moms password.......2006-12-11

all the other SRV fans have already told u how great this album is im just here to talk about the bonus track "life without you" (live). the studio version is good but this version is so much better, words cannot describe how i feel about it. its expanded by about 10 minutes and includes one of stevies free form raps. But what makes me love it so much is the expression and raw emotion stevie puts into every note. i close my eyes when i listen to it and i get this indescribable feeling and enter this state of mind were nothing else matters or even exists. it sounds corny i know, but that is the power that this song has. anyways i think i will wrap up my seemingly crazy description of the song and my feelings for it. i love the rest of the album to but this is my favorite track. please, dont hesitate in buying it.

5 out of 5 stars SRV Is The Man.......2006-10-20

SRV has to be on the short list of greatest guitarists ever. He is amazing. This album is one of his best, it is just awesome. This man could play and this album really shows off his skills. Great album.

5 out of 5 stars Healing with passion.......2006-10-06

Mr. Vaughn's recovery from addiction comes through loud and clear while he loses none of the passion and style that made him so popular to begin with. Every song is like a self-portrait of an man who has finally found the way to real success. The songs are upbeat and make you want to dance with the newfound joy of the artist. Some of the best that SRV has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars SRV - In Step.......2006-08-08

I just wanted to add some info for anyone who's considering buying this but is not completely sure:

The bonus track live version of "Texas Flood" is 7 minutes 22 seconds of Stevie's best live playing EVER recorded. It is amazing. By itself it justifies the $9 expenditure for any SRV fan. The live bonus "Life Without You" is terrific too, by far the best version I've heard of that song (minus the preachy little anti-booze speech he stops to give partway through), but nothing compares to the "Texas Flood" on here. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for not having been born soon enough to see this man play live.

So if you're thinking about getting it - get it!

4 out of 5 stars What the heck???.......2007-03-20

Music is great, as is the playing. However, the last song is not Magnetic Rag but rather the same version of Maple Leaf Rag heard earlier on the album.

What is with that?

5 out of 5 stars More Than Excellent.......2006-08-16

I had previously purchased a Scott Joplin CD and was disappointed by the dull quality and dispirited playing by the artist. This CD more than makes up for it. The music was beautifully performed and the recording was very clear. Every piece was perfect!

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La Grone

Product arrived in a timely manner in new condition, still wrapped in plastic. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07

I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.

I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...

4 out of 5 stars good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24

This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD

2 out of 5 stars Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29

It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.

The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.

When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.

5 out of 5 stars Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02

Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

Gang Starr's second album is quintessential hip-hop and is easily one of the greatest rap albums of all time. In contrast to their 1989 debut, No More Mr. Nice Guy, which was filled with seriously uptempo jams, Step in the Arena slows down the pace, unveiling low, slow, and deceptively complex tempos along with some jazz-tinged loops and beats, all of which firmly established DJ Premier's slot in the producer hall of fame. Furthermore, the slower sonic pace proved to be a perfect fit for Guru's distinctive monotone flow. The album hits on every aural level, from the lumbering bass and blaring horn combo of the title track to the swirling sax blurts, unnerving siren, and kinetic scratch attack of "Who's Gonna Take the Weight" to the laid-back smooth jazz soul of "Love Sick." Guru's verbal volley can only be described as smooth hardcore, with no-nonsense lyrics that effectively strike a balance between the street and the intellect. Toss in tracks like the anti-hoodlum anthem "Just to Get a Rep" and the scathing "Execution of a Chump (No More Mr. Nice Guy, Part 2)," and you've got yourself a bona fide classic that sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first released. --Spence Abbott

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!!!!.......2007-02-18

this album is, right up there with DAILY OPERATION, my absolute favorite gang starr album. HARD TO EARN gets props as well. this album does NOT sound dated. guru's rhymes are NOT dull. yes, he does have a monotone style, but THAT is what i dig about it. love the beats, and i love the deliveries of the rhymes. some just do not understand, but some obviously recognize good hip hop when they hear it. ESSENTIAL!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic, no doubt........2006-04-17

I probably can't say anything that hasn't already been said about this masterpiece, however the sound of this album should not be misunderstood, This is one of those albums that epitomizes what the East Coast feels like. The "simple" production is the point. Guru's skills have been debated over and over again but he fits these tracks perfectly. Preemo is at his best here, a beat, a sample, a cut, that's about it. This album basically set the standard for what East Coast Hip-Hop should sound like to many people. I will never tire of it. Simple perfection.
If you like DITC, BDP etc, you probably already have this one, but if you don't.......

5 out of 5 stars Cream of the crop.......2006-04-17

This album IS what hip-hop music (rap) is supposed to sound like in 1991. Beatwise, Primo was just getting started but his sample selection and generous use of the 808 kick made this album an aural experiance that was perfect on every level. Guru's signature monotone voice fits perfectly with the slow to mid tempo beats. And let's not forget the DJ. Yes, DJ Premier puts in work on the turntables like nobody else with his razor sharp cutting skills. This slbum is in my top five of all time and rightfully so. Every song is a banger and to this very day has stood the test of time making it a hip-hop classic. A must for every fan of rap music.

5 out of 5 stars Step In The Arena; My personal favourite.......2006-03-29

Quality guarantee doesn't come around very often in hip-hop, but Gang Starr delivered four solid albums during the 90's. As long as DJ Premier handled the production, you knew the product was goin' to be great. To pick a classic of these four records aren't too easy, but my personal favourite has always been Step In The Arena. After a vaccinate start in '89 with their debutalbum No More Mr. Nice Guy, Guru and Premier found their formula for success with this one. Instead of copying the soundpicture of that time, which where very dance orientated and funky, they created their own, unique sound.

On "Step In The Arena" everything worked well. Primo's jazz influenced beats fitted Guru perfectly. It was laidback, but at the same time rough, and Guru haven't sound any better on the mic, than what he does here. He seems more comfortable in his role that time. He could talk about wankstas "Just To Get A Rep", wack mc's "Step In The Arena" or be soft "Love Sick" All these songs where a refreshing listen. In a time where rap was very political and aggressive, Gang Starr took it another step longer. Jazz were about to play an important role in hip-hop the following years. As you already know, Primo became one of the 90's most influence producers with melodious vocal cuts combined with drums. He could cut samples like no other, and it's not a coincidence that he have worked with big names like Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. Even Janet Jackson and Limp Bizkit have hired him to remix their hits.

Step In The Arena where followed by Daily Operation and Hard To Earn. These three records are their best work. As a producer Premier just got better, but a little charm disappeared. Step In The Arena was somethin' new and different. Maybe their following records were technically more perfected, but not really anything new. Just extremely tight. If you're one of those, that discovered Gang Starr recently, I'll recommend you to take a journey back to the beginning - to 1991 and Step In The Arena.

More classic material by Gang Starr : Daily Operation (1992), Hard To Earn (1994)

5 out of 5 stars Waaaay underated album!!.......2006-02-16

This is the type of album that separated Gangstarr from the rest of Hip Hop.Jazzy yes but not Tribe,De La, or Jungle Brothers at all.Step in the Arena had a feel completely unique to itself.Guru lyrically way ahead to even now.His flow at times were soft spoken though his words were harsh with seriousness.Probably one of the most well rounded hip hop albums of all time. The only thing I wish was better is the overall sonic quality. It seemed the levels were low at some spots but that may be the magic in this production.Less is more.No tracks to mention because they are all equaly great.A must have for the hip hop purist.

Rascal boasts a frenetic verbal presence--the Cockney equivalent to Busta Rhymes--and his first single, "Fix Up, Look Sharp," is as good as you could want: old-school drum breaks meet futuristic flows with a memorable, holler-if-you-hear-me hook. What Rascal has going against him is the fact that he sounds, well, British, and American audiences seem to like their flows homegrown, not imported. Moreover, with pulsing, electro bumps dominating most of the album, the sound is closer to Tricky's than Trick Daddy's. That said, Boy in Da Corner offers boundless energy and Rascal's enthusiasm is palpable. "Jus' a Rascal" is crunked out enough to make Lil Jon proud while "Live O" moves smoothly and steadily with a submarine's deadly grace. Though Rascal won't knock 50 Cent off the charts anytime soon, his debut loudly proclaims that rap's geopolitics may be shifting. --Oliver Wang

Alongside Wiley and his fellow Roll Deep Entourage members, East London's Dizzee was propelled to underground fame. 5 out of 5 stars Late American review.......2007-06-13

I'm an American chick and I LOVE Boy in da corner, but it wasn't always that way. When I first got the album and popped it in my CD player, I spat it right out, I couldn't understand it AT ALL. I put it on my shelf for like 6 months, then I went back to it because I was feeling guilty for have buying it and not really listening. I tried again, went through the tracks, still no spark, until I got to "Round We Go" is was the only track I could understand (accent wise) and then something clicked, it grew on me, then I played it like 3 times on repeat. Once I caught the bug I went to the next track "Jus a Rascal" loved that shit, and then end up listening to the whole thing. The funniest things that now "round we go" is my least favorite song. I tend like to hard ones like "Stop Dat" "Hold ya Mouf" and "Fix up Look Sharp". All the tracks are gems. *listening to "Cut em off" now*

I guess I had to train myself into understanding his accent, then I learned to appreciate the production/beats especially no rapper I've ever heard had the sound. Needless to say, this album is definitely one of my favorites of all time, maybe top 10, that's how much I love it and him.

I really thought after Dizzee there was going to be some sort of British Hip Hop invasion, but I guess I was wrong. Most of the main stream US Hip Hop fans are really one dimensional, aren't opened minded and like things that are easy too listen to. Dizzee in my opinion is better a lyricist than any US rapper at this moment, even Jay (gag) Z. I'm not giving up on the dream of some new hip hop imports, and I hope he has a new chance with "Maths and English" to spark change in American urban music, because we need help badly. I haven't heard the radio in over a year and this album is still in heavy rotation in my stereo.

I got the chance to see Dizzee in the US and his live show was just as good as the album. I got to meet afterwards, he was real cool and is all about his music, which I love.

If you don't like this album, just try it again, listen with new ears. Hear the innovation, the talent, the rhymes, and his stories they are worth listening to. I now find myself understanding every word he says even rapping along and understanding the slang, so...

5 out of 5 stars SOUNDS LIKE IF THE NEPTUNES WERE ENGLISH!!!.......2007-06-03

I love Dizze Rascal. I think his sound is great, and if he continues on the path he is on, he could be big and this sound of music will become worldwide. Fave songs- I luv u (underrated; this should have gotten the recognition like a Jay-Z or 50 cent song would), Jezebel Jus a rascal, Brand new day. I think this music is underrated, hopefully it won't be for long!

4 out of 5 stars UK classic.......2007-03-22

I agree to some extent with the Americans saying they can't feel the accent. It's true, you either dig it or not. Accent can be so out there that you just ignore the music. I decided to give Dizzee a second chance. For me it's mostly about the beats and boy there are some exceptional ones on this album. Experimental, raw, gritty, funky you name it. Tracks like Do it, I luv U and Fix up Look Sharp are pure original and like no one ever done before. This album is for all the people that said European hip-hop didn't have it's own face. Like Dizzee proves England amongs others is the place where unique hip-hop comes from. Give this album a second chance.

1 out of 5 stars It's not the accent, it's the lyrics (...and beats)........2006-11-03

I have no problem listening to an MC with an accent. It's just that, well, after you have this album for a while and the novelty wears off, and you listen more closely, there just isn't much there.

At first, I would put it on and it was these cool electronica-influenced beats and a fast flow that I couldn't really understand, but that didn't matter much.

Until I actually listened to some of these lyrics.

1. "dizzy rascal come down like snow/
with freezing cold flows like moscow/
dumb hoe, get me upset, guns blow/
bitch, you're not ready for skid row"

2. "I've met bad boys from every post code/
You could never talk to me about gold/
Stop dreaming, I'm your worst nightmare/
I'm Freddie kruger, make the luger explode"

3. "Now there you go again talking like a star/
Like I can't find out where you park/
Kick off your door, I ain't got a 4-4, bruh/
Ill have to settle for a long metal bar"

A rapper like MF Doom might be able to pull off lyrics like these, over a good Madlib beat and with his patented style and sense of irony, but in the hands of Dizzee Rascal over top of these cheap, brittle, annoying, thrown together beats, they fall flat.

5 out of 5 stars Americans need to open their minds.......2006-10-21

I said I'd read some of the reviews for this classic album and see what America thought of it. I must say alot of these reviews really really pissed me off, giving an album 1 star just because they just find it too hard to understand!!? Thats just straight up ignorant. I'm from Ireland and I have no problem understanding it, nor do my friends. Come to think of it, neither does my cousin in Austrailia who happens to own a rap label in melbourne, one of the biggest in Australia. Brittish rap is very big in Ireland, and Irish hip hop is on the come up in a major way. I'd love to hear what the Americans have to say about Irish hip hop. Would they dismiss it coz they don't understand it? Or would they dismiss it believing that all Irish people are stupid alcoholics that love to fight? Irish people are not stupid, we're not all alcoholics and we don't all fight for the craic of it. Thats a stupid stereotype and Americans need to wake up to that and open their small minds. I'm speaking of course to the people who do know what Ireland is really like, and the Irish-Americans (NOT THE MILLIONS WHO CLAIM TO BE OF IRISH DESCENT). And before people reply to this, I am a huge hip hop fan. I own almost 1000 hip hop albums, from Run DMC to KRS ONE. My faves are wu tang and the boot camp clik ( enter the 36 chambers, liquid swords, cuban linx, enta da stage, da shinin etc.) So I do know what I'm talking about

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

Amazon.com essential recording

A vast audience received its first exposure to the music of György Ligeti through Stanley Kubrick's use of his haunting "Lux Aeterna" (despite the composer's lack of consent) in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. This collection--part of Sony's invaluable Ligeti edition--places "Lux aeterna" in the context of Ligeti's other a cappella choral works, which together provide an overview of the evolving phases of one of the 20th century's most intriguing composers. In his booklet notes to the disc, Ligeti recalls the influence of Bartók and Kodály on his early folkloric compositions, from arrangements of traditional material to free, polyrhythmically inflected inventions on Hungarian folk texts, a format that allowed him some degree of experimental freedom from the strictures of "socialist realism" before he fled the Hungarian Communist regime. The breakthrough "Lux aeterna" is a classic example of Ligeti's trademark technique of "micropolyphony," enveloping the listener in mesmerizingly dense textures of cloudlike harmonies. From Ligeti's late period comes a triptych of "Hölderlin Phantasies." Their 16-voice polyphony transcends the simplistic distinction between tonality and atonality to explore "new kinds of half diatonic, half chromatic harmonies." The resulting sound world of fragmentary, dislocated epiphanies mirrors the unfathomable richness of the great visionary poet to uncanny effect. Throughout, the acoustical balance and conviction of the London Sinfonietta Voices give vivid shape to Ligeti's genius. -Thomas May

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Surprising Variety in Modern A Capepella Choral works.......2006-08-24

This 'A Cappella Choral Works', the second volume in a collection of Gyorgy Ligeti compositions contains one of the pieces of music which contributed to making '2001, A Space Odyessy' such a profoundly interesting film. This piece, 'Lux aeterna' which is the textbook example of 'SciFi' music, is very different from many of the other pieces on this recording. In fact, one is really impressed by the wide variety of styles, where you have some peasant songs which sound a lot like sea chantys and other pieces which are definitely liturgical. One can certainly thank Stanley Kubrick for bringing Ligeti to our attention.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly unlistenable...........2006-08-23

Not even good for background music/noise as the voices get really loud in certain parts and almost silent.

I bought this CD and am returning it. It's just more & more of the sameness throughout the whole CD.

I realize that Ligeti is avant garde but I heard that if you like Gregorian chant (which I do) this CD is similar. I don't think it is. It's very disquieting and full of tension (great, if that's the mood you're looking for).

5 out of 5 stars a handful of great Ligeti works........2004-09-06

As a compilation, musically speaking, Edition 2 is probably my least favorite of the Sony Ligeti Edition collection. Many of the pieces come from traditional Hungarian sources, conceived while Ligeti was still in his early years. They are pretty, but also pretty straightforward and conventional, and other than their simple pleasantness and occasionally yummy dissonances, they aren't really mindblowing like the best Ligeti. They are often very beautiful though. However, Edition 2 DOES feature one of the most harrowing, apocalyptic compositions of 20th century Western music, _Lux aeterna_. The profound tension in the quiet web of micropolyphonic voices is just devastating. Also great are the other later pieces, _Drei Phantasien nach Friedrich Holderlin_, three wild polyphony pieces from German literature, and _Magyar Etudok_, three very complex Hungarian etudes for 16 voices. Those pieces are all outstanding but honestly I think everything I've heard by Ligeti is worth hearing. Check out Ligeti edition 4 for more vocal works, some of which are the best of Ligeti's works.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant choral music.......2003-07-21

This cd is beautiful to listen to.From Ejszaka to Kallai Ketto
is brilliant. Ligeti choral works is the first cd have got choral music on it and i love it.Now im going to get the other two cds in the ligeti edition.
(the vocal works & le grand marabre)

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite use of the voice.......2002-07-11

Bringing Ligeti's works to a wider public was one of the great services Stanley Kubrick performed for the world when Lux aeterna was included in the soundtrack for 2001: a Space Odyssey.

This album is a collection of a cappella choral works and which highlights Ligeti's great talent and skill in the use of the voice as a musical instrument. He, together with Yoko Ono, have excelled in this field though from different, sometimes conflicting directions.

When I listen to this I revel in it's glory. The sounds are ethereal and atmospheric, ghostly and angelic in a way that no-one but the composer can make them sound. I never want those sounds to end and in a way it is like having a sort of dependence.

I could go on and on and on about this but I had better stop. This is one essentila component of anyone's classical music collection yet it really defies categorisation. This is timeless, awesome music, not just for a generation but for a world. Lest Zeus strike me with a thunderbolt, these voices are sweeter and more angelic than the voices of the angels themselves.

Exquiiste. Words are insufficient to describe such beauty.

Just in time for the November 2000 presidential elections, violinist Leila Josefowicz delivers her platform based entirely on violin virtuosity and Americana. Josefowicz seems to excel on short showpieces, and this 21-track CD is full of them--lively American-themed miniatures that don't stretch over five minutes. Accompanied by pianist John Novacek, Josefowicz is in fine form, fiddling through Gershwin's Three Preludes, Porgy and Bess Suite, and "Short Story." On Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," she gets to show off her glorious tone (obscured on most of these tunes by her energetic bow attack). And, though the "Yankee Doodle" variations by Henri Vieuxtemps may test the mettle of all but the most patriotic listener, there's no denying that Josefowicz can play these pieces with the best of them. It may be lightweight fun, but it's fun nonetheless. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Good clean fun........2002-02-21

I have enjoyed most of Leila Josefowicz's recordings very much, but this is my favorite. The songs are mostly in a style more or less like rag-time, and they are a lot of fun besides being impressive.
The most amazing piece on this disc is the delightful Yankee Doodle Variations by Vieuxtemps. A fun and virtuosic set of, you guessed right, variations on the song Yankee Doodle. Her perfomence on this piece in particular makes it worth the cost of the entire disc.
Ms. Josefowicz's technique is flawless and her tone is gorgeous. The accompaniment equally good, and the recording quality leaves little to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars The spirit of American music.......2001-07-23

Ms. Josefowicz has created an amazing recording. Her style is incredibly spirited and one can tell she is having great fun with the music. These are pieces familiar to many and yet her performance leaves one feeling they are hearing them for the first time. She is to be commended for producing and replicating the enthusiasm of the American musical tradition. The Gershwin pieces are masterpieces in their own right. I would love to see her produce a Gershwin recording. I think you will find yourself listening many times to this amaizing recording.

1 out of 5 stars Very Dirty Playing.......2001-03-20

On this CD Josefowicz goes far beyond that of "Gypsy like abandon," her playing is horribly scratchy. Her performance of the delightful Yankee Doodle Variations by Vieuxtemps is absolutely repulsive. The playing is not helped any by the horrible recording quality either, if you buy this CD, don't buy it for the Yankee Doodle Variations!

5 out of 5 stars Lighthearted, musical fun.......2000-12-13

Leila Josefowicz has shown us, through her previous recordings, that she can play all the "heavies" of the violin repertoire with the best of them. Now she's back, with a catchy, fun recording of jazzy American showpieces. Don't let the cover of the cd fool you into thinking this is a pop princess album, it's not. True, the pieces on here are not heavy, they're purely fun, but she still pulls them off with the same flair and panache as she does in her more serious albums. As Leila states in the liner notes, this album WILL bring a smile to your face! Go out and buy this recording--it's wonderful to listen to when your spirits need a lift.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest brass ensemble..........2007-01-19

Philip Jones brass ensemble shows you musicality on a high level. The feelings they are playing with are suberb...music is feelings, not technical.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing better than this!.......2006-07-11

There are many brass recordings available today with ensembles which are even technically more advanced, but nothing can compare with Philip Jones, because the PJBE is not only pure precision playing, it's musicality too and it's smart arranging. Jones understands how to use the characteristics of each instrument. He lets room for Tuba or Horn too, its not just Trumpet always playing the big parts like Empire Brass does.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Back PJBE.......2001-10-19

It is ironic that London/Decca waited until many of the important members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble were dead before finally releasing this collection of highlights from the ensemble's considerable catalog. Don't misunderstand me! I am thankful for this substantial 2 cd set. For fans of the PJBE there is real cause for celebration; and for those who are just discovering the work of this important brass ensemble, you are in for a treat.

The remastering is first rate and you can't beat the 2-fer pricing. Get this set while its available because the wait for more will at best be a long one. Thankfully, I still have most of the PJBE recordings on vinyl and a good turntable for playing them. But I would still be near the head of the line to snatch up any subsequent reissues. Years ago I saw several of their recordings on cd, but foolishly passed on them, thinking they would be in circulation for awhile. Silly me. Like I said, grab this before they post the infamous notice "no longer available."

When the PJBE made it's first American tour back in the 70s I was already a huge fan. I went to hear them play, never expecting the concert to sound as good as the recordings. They opened with the Tylman Susato Renaissance Suite and their playing immediately blew away any Memorex memories of their recordings. Unfortunately, we will never again hear live such virtuosity and musicianship. The recordings DO serve as a fine memory of the first and foremost brass ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Great start! Now where is the rest?.......2001-05-31

I have always been a huge fan of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. They set a very high standard of playing and the recordings, most of which are not available on CD, are excellent.

Where are their landmark recordings of such works as the Hindemith works for brass ensembles: Concert music for strings and brass, Morgenmusik for brass, Concert music for piano, brass and harps which they played flawlessly?

Where is their outstanding recording of the Gunther Schuller Symphony for Brass?

Please, Decca, give us more of the full course, not merely the teasers and encores.
