What we're getting here is what we've come to expect from this talented songstress: pop arrangements of literate songs that deal with knotty relationships involving lovers, critics, and corporations. Mann co-wrote a song with Elvis Costello for the final 'Til Tuesday album, and it was an apt pairing. Like Costello at his best, Aimee is equal parts adroit and direct. A couplet like "I came back twice, now I'm the Anti-Christ" or "A thousand compromises don't add up to a single win" may be accompanied by something a little more to the point--"Don't you know you're a fucking freak in this world?" Mann and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion keep the songs pithy and punchy, bringing on guests like Juliana Hatfield (on the particularly intoxicating "You Could Make a Killing"), Suede alumni Bernard Butler, Michael Penn, Chris Difford, and Glenn Tilbrook for occasional adornment, but mostly maintain a hands-on approach. The result frequently recalls Abby Road-period Beatles, which isn't a bad source. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars best aimee album.......2007-01-10

I consider this the best album of Aimee, each song is a story by itself, it is a masterwork; Long shot, Ray, That's just what you are and Amateur are my favorite..... I love this album...!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth buying........2007-01-04

With her strong emphasis on voice and unique lyrics, Aimee Mann's songs of depression and dysfunction are enough to brighten anyone's day. More upbeat and active than Mann's usual work-but with downers like Ray and Par for the Course mixed in-this album shows just how varied one singer can be. The long conclusions of a few songs can be a bit distracting, but it doesn't take away from her strong voice. An overall treat for any Aimee fan.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2006-11-25

I was lucky enough to have worked on this record and it remains one of my favorites to date. The earnestness with which Aimee approaches her songwriting coupled with the nuanced and colorful touches by Jon Brion combined to give us a fantastic record full of tender sarcasm and pithy cynicism....it expresses a part of Aimee's quirky and intelligent self beautifully. I love this record and if you like music that makes you feel and think then yhou might too...'Amateur' is one of the most elegant and touching pop balladds ever.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite album of all time.......2006-06-13

1. Longshot - 9/10 - Aimee Mann MUST have personally written this one for my ex boyfriend
2. Choice in the Matter - 10/10 - "Skip the cloak and dagger bit, don't you know we're sick of it?" haha
3. Sugarcoated - 10/10 - definitely the best song on this album. Anyone can relate to this song.
4. Could Make A Killing - 10/10 - this is the song that made me go out and buy the album in the first place
5. Superball - 11/10 - All I can say is 'WOW'
6. Amateur- 10/10 - I cried so many times over this song
7. All Over Now -10/10- Yet another one dedicated to my ex and I liked the superball reference at the end
8. Par For The Course - 8/10 - An okay favourite song
9. You're With Stupid Now - 9.5/10 - such a sad song
10. That's Just What You Are - 10/10 - Words never rang so true

another mann masterpiece also delayed from the idiots that be behind the record labels.
they didn't hear that "hit single for the radio", and shelved
this cd. however, it saw the light of day 2 yes. later.
the whole album is mann's horrible experience with producing
and making a record with dumbasses behind the hit factory.
excellent songs, great songwriting style. the song
"amateur" is in the gwyneth paltrow film,"sliding doors"

4 out of 5 stars Kewl.......2006-07-26

I have been a PSB fan since I heard "ACTUALLY" back in the late mid 80s. Even though this album may not be their best music, I will still continue to follow them till they stop(hopefully never). They may drop a few suprises on us. :) I know I got that suprise when I heard " I don't know what you want but I'm giving it anymore". BEST SONG EVER!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD Maxi Single.......2006-07-23

I already own the Fundamental CD that has "I'm with Stupid" on it. So I got this for the 2 extra tracks and they are fantastic!!!; well worth the money. If you don't have Fundamental you need to buy it now!! This group puts out some of best dance/electronic/synth music you will ever hear.
REAL TALLENT!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars too bad PSB has jumped on the copy protection club.......2006-07-03

#1) do not buy this cd if you plan to put it on your Ipod or some other media player - it has copy protection technology, thank you very much.

#2) I like PSB a lot, the Fundamental cd is great, don't get me wrong

But why did they have to jump on the copy protection bandwagon? This single may as well not even exist if you can't put it on your portable player. What were they thinking? I just filed it with all my other cds and don't even remember the extra song on it. Oh well

4 out of 5 stars Pet Shop Boys = Britney... hardly.......2006-05-27

Regarding the review comparing PSB to Britney. I have to say your comments aren't particularly fact based. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe (ie 'the other one') have always written their own music. True, they hire big name producers to mix their albums (as does every other pop act) but the music and lyrics are their own. And while I will admit that's Neil's voice is an acquired taste, their lyrics are and have always been poignant, sardonic and frankly brillant. In fact, so good that PHd in English was written to analyze them.

Do you in fact even know what this song is about?

I have to ask myself
Like any lover might:
Have you made a fool of me?
Are you not Mr Right?
You grin
I pose
It's not about sincerity
Everybody knows
Oh-oh, I'm with Stupid
Is stupid really stupid
Or a different kind of smart?

It's about Tony Blaire and W. It's biting and somewhat caustic social commentary, and whether or not you like it, it can't be justly comparable to "With the taste of your lips I'm on a ride You're toxic. I'm slippin' under"

5 out of 5 stars They are musical geniuses!.......2006-05-23

Another spectacular single from the Pet Shop Boys. I am highly anticipating the arrival of Fundemental. Clearly the best Pop group ever.

5 out of 5 stars Pet Shop Boys find their best grooves in years and years!!.......2006-07-18

I really enjoy these new songs especially "The Resurrectionist"
this is one of there best songs since the 80's, great dance
beat and quirky lyrics about body snatching for medical use during the 1800's, this should have been on the new cd??
but if their on a roll can't wait to hear more from these synth
wizards, its a nice flashback to the 80's, this should get the
PSB's some much needed airplay, a video would be icing on the
cake. Time to bring back the B-52s's and really get the party
    started!

5 out of 5 stars Far from stupid.......2006-07-03

Pet Shop Boys' first single from their fantastic CD, "Fundamental," is a catchy bit of dance music called "I'm with Stupid." On the surface, the song is about being in a relationship with someone everyone else regards as being bright as a sack of rocks. However, one doesn't need to look deep to discern that the joke is really about Tony Blair's puzzling friendship with G. W. Bush. Of course, PSB manage to write clever lyrics for the most mundane topics; among the better lines here is "See you on the TV/ Call you every day/ Fly across the ocean/ Just to let you get your way." Fortunately, the song's political overtones don't prevent "I'm with Stupid" from being one of the most fun pieces of dance fluff that they've released in ages. The single peaked at #8 on the U.K. chart, making it their biggest single since "You only tell me you love me when you're drunk" also hit #8 in 2000.

The b-side is even more intriguing. "The Resurrectionist" is about body-snatchers in the early 1800s; they would dig up bodies from graveyards and sell them to anatomists and medical schools ("Our goods are dear but they're never shoddy/ Tell me: anybody need a body"). Apparently, body-snatching was quite a problem in London during this period, which is the kind of arcane trivia that PSB so often impart to their loyal listeners. The lyrics are incredibly witty ("I met a man down Thieving Lane/ He told me he was in the same game/ We both talked the same body language). Despite the rather grim topic matter, the song is remarkably danceable with a pounding synth line that sounds like an Italian disco masterpiece crossed with a cheesy reject from "Chariots of Fire." Given the darkness of the lyrics and the Eurotrashy sound of the music, the song ends up sounding quite skuzzy in the best possible way - something only Chris and Neil can accomplish on a seemingly throwaway b-side. Overall, "The Resurrectionist" is the best b-side PSB have released in years, making this single a must-have.
