With the fury of a few Humble Pies and the forward propulsion of the Fratellis and Libertines, the View can be forgiven for sharing their name with ABC's daytime talk show. The Scottish quartet's a scrappy and needly bunch, opening their debut with "Comin Down," an angular, barking tune that gets its power dually from Kyle Falconer's short, sharp wail and a piercing twin-guitar slash. Those same guitars dish out sweet strumming for "Same Jeans," a danceably jumping paean to night-clubbing, sidewalk musicians, and "dressing down." The View like their guitars transluscent and sunny, as on "The Don," where they go all call-and-response, making a fast-shuffling vibe that brings Falconer from sweet-voiced narration to a scouring shout, as his mates harmonize, increasing the sunniness. Like their countrymen in the Fratellis, the View ought to find that bigger stage to stumble toward. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Is this Megacity 4 revisited?.......2007-07-20

yes, upon securing this CD I was up for some fast charged Brit-punk, comparisons to the Jam, Clash, etc. And ain't that a rough road to hoe?
To me - this reminds of the great underated UK rock of Megacity4, the vocals and the strummy sprightly guitars all pay homage to MC4. The two killer tracks (Tradesmen & Wasted little DJ's)for the the album foundation and of course were huge hits in England and here too! yeah right, no doubt carry the album. Grantd, there is a glut of music coming from the UK these days, and most of it is worth listening to. A fine debut and undoubtably more to come from these young Scots.

3 out of 5 stars Do's and Don's.......2007-07-02

The View are a talent. That's obvious. That their debut album isn't a classic is due to a number of factors. One is vocalist Kyle Falconer. (A great name!) He needs to have more faith in himself, be more strident with his self-belief. When he' not trying to sound like Liam Gallagher or the lad from Arctic Monkeys', his delivery is far too polite, (my `polite' way of saying it's wimpy) when it should be high up in the mix, competing on every level with the beefy music. No shrinking violet, but just not enough earthy swagger, not enough gravel in the delivery. A better producer might help him a bit, but ultimately it's gotta come from him.
More problematic, is the band obviously can't sustain 40 minutes yet. Proof? Two fabulous openers: 'Comin Down' and the excellent single 'Superstar Tradesman'. Bejeez, these lads CAN stir up a pop rage when the mood takes `em, but unfortunately it's the strength of these two stormers which goes some way to ultimately defeating them. Expectations get raised, and when not (quite) realized, leave one with a slightly empty feeling. It's as if they're holding back, in case they find themselves outside the fold. Reluctant to break out on their own in case the world turns nasty, but they will have to sometime. Sooner the better.
I feel cruel here, like a tyrannical despot with a cudgel, hitting little pop people for no good reason. Not my fault. Those opening blasts made me hopeful ,eager for the rest of the album to be as good, but it isn't.
On the plus side, they have got a sense of humour, check out the insane lyrics to the genuinely punky `Skag Trendy' or the otherwise dull `The Don'. But it goes seriously awry on the albums closer, which sounds like 'I Spit On Your Grave' type hillbillies singing by a bayou.
Other plusses? The Oasis-like `Street Highs' which is a solid song, and the Clashy guitar attack of `Wasted Little Dj's' (look out for that humour again!), but they're too few and far between.
I have faith in these boys though. The good stuff on here gives cause for optimism, and I really believe they have the potential to do something effective and lasting. Lets hope they can fulfill it.

3 out of 5 stars Hobbit Rock 2.......2007-06-09

This is the album that the whole of the Shire has been waiting for: Hobbit Rock in its truest form. From the squeaky hobbit perfection of 'Same Jeans' through to the tub-thumping beats of "Sam Gangee and Me", this album is a corker. I've got a copy translated from the original Hobbitish and signed by Mayor of Dundee, Gilbert D'Frodo. Watch this space for a halfling tsunami of Hobbit Rock, and those 4 feisty fellows from the View will be surfing at the front.

5 out of 5 stars Hobbit Rock.......2007-06-09

The View thrill with this their first album, a breakthrough record in the emerging genre of Hobbit Rock. Oddly proportioned small men often communicating in an unintelligible babble, influences are broad and range from the Libertines, Kings of Leon and 1980's underground Scottish performance artists, the Krankies. If you like your rock to be made by small people with big hairy feet, and to sound satisfyingly similar to lots of other bands - Hats off to the Buskers is an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great British Band.......2007-06-01

I discovered this band through the Sirius BBC station and decided I wanted to hear more. I was not dissapointed. It's a very ecletic sort of band that uses a wide variety of different types of music.

5 out of 5 stars Nighttime mood music........2007-07-03

I was introduced to The Blue Nile from a friend. This album is like nice moody synthesizer music that reminds me of cloudy days and late nights alone. Unlike New Age, it isn't melodramatic, just nice and easy. Every track on the CD is ambient, cool, and relaxing, but once "Headlights On A Parade" starts, the album really takes a turn for the better I think. "From A Late Night Train" has a cool funky synthesizer sound that makes me want to smoke just listening to it. Great album to listen to when you want to be alone and watch the rain.

5 out of 5 stars A one of a kind all time great.......2007-04-16

I feel compelled to correct a reviewers comments that this is a Welsh band. They are most definitely a Scottish band and yet one more example of the greatness of Scottish music from Annie Lennox to Travis to Simple Minds to Deacon Blue and on to Blue Nile to name a few.On a more serious note, this is one of the most original and perfect albums of all time. It transcends time and genre. All these years later it still gives me great pleasure and really does cause goosebumps to appear from the mournful lyrics touching your musical soul. They have made only a few albums and although all have some greatness none of them reach the total perfection of Hats. A sure sign of its greatness is the amount of praise and versions of these songs you will find from other great musicians like Annie, Rod Stewart, Peter Gabriel and Craig Armstrong. These are people who know what they are hearing.

    5 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR.......2007-02-14

I always thought of myself as being pretty much in touch with a large variety of music. How could I have not heard of The Blue Nile? I'm not even sure how I stumbled across this phenominal sound in the past month...
Upon hearing two or three cuts from this CD, I immediately ordered it, and High, Peace At Last and A Walk Across the Rooftops. Hat's is definately my favorite of all four. All are great though. No other band has instantly soared to the very top of my All Time Favorite Bands list.
All the reviews I read of this cd were right on the money. I too am reminded of Bruce when hearing some songs. I am moved to tears when I listen to Let's Go Out Tonight. Paul Buchanan's soulful voice is so gut wrenchingly beautiful, it DOES touch the very core of my soul. Even my 16 year old daughter requested that I burn some songs onto a disc for her...and that speaks volumes to me.
I regret that I didn't hear about The Blue Nile when they first emerged; but what a priceless buried treasure I have just discovered.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say ... nothing. Only my heart can speak.......2007-01-09

The only thing I can say is that my heart moves everytime I listen to this record. IT TOUCHES THE CORE OF MY HEART.
Thanks blue nile for this priceless and timeless album. I don't know how many times I have auditioned it, but not less than a hundred and everytime is like the first time.
    love

    5 out of 5 stars Yes!.......2006-12-23

It's not going to be easy for me to sell you on this, but I'll do my best. I may come off as a little biased here (gee, that's a first), but inside perspectives work best and what review isn't seeded with a little bias now and then? There you go.

Instead of regaling you with an in-depth backstory of The Blue Nile and the time period in which this album was released, I'll just lay out the basics for you. First of all, I don't know too much about these guys except for the fact that they are a Welsh band that has come a long way in their musical endeavors (if the release date of 'Hats' alone doesn't indicate that I don't know what will). I suppose that The Blue Nile is something to be discovered by word-of-mouth or just pure discovery in and of itself. As accessible as The Blue Nile is, they're relatively unknown by mainstream standards, but that is, like most things, a blessing in disguise because what little you receive means a lot more. I accidentally came across 'Hats' while embarking on a brief albeit valuable quest to diversify my musical tastes; afterall you get tired of listening to a particular genre after a while. However, 'Hats' contained two red herrings for me: it came out in the 80's and *gasp* was easy-listening. Let me tell you about easy listening, or at least my initial opinion of it before listening to 'Hats'. Once you've heard Phil Collins, Annie Lennox, or Peter Gabriel, you've heard just about everything easy listening has to offer. The lyrics, the instrumentation, and the production are, from an outset, cookie-cutter. Despite this, I swallowed my pride and gave 'Hats' a listen.

I loved it. I loved it because it made me do a double-take on how deceptively simple easy listening and softcore music actually is. 'Hats' is probably misinterpreted half the time by people like me because it doesn't fit into a particular mold so to speak. Most people may not like it because it's not an energetic record. The lyrics are pretty cut and dry, the vocals are so-so and there are no engaging hooks to speak of, but the genius of 'Hats' is its atmosphere. The Blue Nile somehow took the sights, sounds and smells of New York City at night and crammed them into seven songs. It's amazing. The keyboards not only refuse to be cheesy but actually enhance the proceedings to glorious ends. Everything sounds so smooth and disciplined that you really have to hand it to these guys. They don't aim too high, and in their case it's a good thing, because anything too ambitious would have easily gotten out of their control and destroyed the record from the get-go.

It's an album that can sit side-by-side with 'Born To Run' by Bruce Springsteen (in fact, the vocals of Paul Buchanan come eerily close to Springsteen's), because they both deal with city life in a simple manner, but the results are nothing short of epic. If 'Hats' is worth buying for just one track it would have to be 'From a Late Night Train', in which Buchanan chronicles the dismal aftermath of a break-up by murmuring his way through lonely piano chords, a low synth line and distant, weeping horns.

Trust me: as long as you don't set your expectations too high, chances are you will be in for a relaxing, heartfelt treat. And it just might make you think twice about easy listening and what the 1980's really had to offer. I give 'Hats' my highest praise.

5 out of 5 stars Different concept for a concept album.......2006-07-06

Men Without Hats have been known as a synth-pop group with a touch of liberal social commentary blended in the music. They were doing quite well as this kind of group with songs like Safety Dance and Messiahs Die Young, however this time around things changed. Ivan and friends decided to do a concept album and the result is Pop Goes the World. The concept was some story about a boy and a girl, but that's not what's important. While it's a very different animal than the synth-pop trio's other albums it is a very worthwhile diversion from their norm.

MWOH signed up producer Zeus B. Held (no, I'm serious... he actually went by that name) to help put this album together. Zeus did a fair amount of producing with remix albums for Gary Numan, Alphaville, Dead or Alive, Erasure, Simple Minds and a slew of other 80's electronic and experimental groups. Add some studio musicians and you get a more acoustic album than the previous MWOH records.

Does that mean no more synth-pop? No way. You get two really catchy dance tracks on this album. The most famous one, Pop Goes the World, is a really great song and has a real catchy melody to it. The other track, Moonbeam, hit the clubs back in the 80's pretty strong and was the purist of the two in regards to that genre. They still sound very different than Safety Dance, but at the same time they sound a lot more polished musically and better produced.

Just about every song on this album is worth noting. On Tuesday has Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull peforming on flute and is as much a song of ambience as it is rhythm and melody. A great song to relax to. There are some really good piano ballads on this album with the reflective Bright Side of the Sun and the lightly angst-ridden Lose My Way. This album essentially has a good balance of high energy music, mellow tracks, peppy music, punchy music, and more in between. You will notice the underlying theme of "Johnny and Jenny" throughout most of the album, too.

While Pop Goes the World is very different from anything Men Without Hats did previously this album is definitely one of their better achievements. It shows that Ivan and the gang can expand their musical horizons successfully without losing what made them great in the first place. If you like 80's dance music, or if you just like good music, this album will be a nice addition to your collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Great 80's Pop.......2005-10-20

This is one of the best albums to come out of 1987. Nice synthy pop feel and Ian Anderson on one song! That is worth the price alone.

This is my favorite MWH album.

3 out of 5 stars Pop goes the Hats........2005-09-20

I know most would call them a one-hit-wonder, but the majority of their songs are great. I think this album and the band in general are quite underrated. I didn't get this album until recently, and realized what I was missing all these years. A very solid and catchy pop album. The title track was the hit here, but I believe "Moonbeam" was a single as well. This is consistently good, but my favorites are "Pop Goes The World", "Jenny Wore Black", "Intro/Walk On Water", and the excellent "On Tuesday". That song has quite the flute hook. Overall I like their "Rhythm Of Youth" album more, but this is the next best thing. Too bad they're all so hard to find.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Brilliance!.......2005-09-10

Quite possibly the greatest pop record ever produced. Yeah, very strong statement - but give it a shot. Just look at all of these reviews - what gives? Well, for one, there really are no duds on here. Zip. Nada. Just an amazing tapestry of music, spun together in beautiful harmony around the themes of love and devotion. I actually purchased this when it first was released, and since then, I am still in total shock of the end-to-end quality. Of course, the biggest shock are the artists - MWH sounded NOTHING like this on their previous efforts. BIG shame that it didn't take off like it deserved. I can only hope many more will take the time and be moved as I was (and continue to be).

All songs are standouts, but as for the "best of the best", these would be "Pop Goes the World", "In the name of Angels", "Lose My Way", and the genius "Walk on Water". If you never considered buying a MWH's CD, here's your open invitation - prepare to be blown away!

    ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars from classic rock fan as well!.......2004-09-16

I'm normally a classic rock fan ('60s/'70s progressive), but I ended up with this from a cheap bin when the '80s retro craze started. I started listening to this and couldn't stop...I have no idea how many times I've played it.

It's sort of a vague concept album about life and love and death. I was pleasantly surprised to find Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull (one of my favorite bands) plays flute on "On Tuesday"!

As a warning, this album contains LOTS of synths, and parts of it even get to the point of being cheesy...but it seems like the band knows this, and do it deliberately to make the music seem more spontaneous and less pretentious. Anyway, it works.

It should have been a classic...I can't believe how overlooked it is.

3 out of 5 stars Unauthorized and rehashed. This great music deserves much more than this.......2006-08-27

Unauthorized: Stefan from the band has stated on the official band website that this, as well as the live DVD 'Live Hats', have been released without band permission or record label consent. He indicated it's going to court so I would expect these two items to become rarities very soon. Get 'em while you can!

Rehash: There's very little on this CD that hasn't been covered already. First came the CD 'Collection', released on the Oglio label many years ago. Next came 'Greatest Hats', which was essentially the same thing with the exception of a couple song differences, though utilizing the same mastering. Now with 'My Hats Collection', it's essentially the same thing again. Nothing about this new collection has been digitally remastered. All songs from 'Collection'/'Greatest Hats' are pulled directly from that CD, anomalies and all. And while "Freeways" on the 'Greatest Hats' CD was clearly from crunchy vinyl, here we have another vinyl transfer but it has been extremely overdosed with damaging auto-pop removal. The result is the song has been destroyed. Many of the synth sounds have been chewed to bits, making it sound like a distorted, slightly out of tune radio station.

The highlights: "Tomorrow Today" is an unreleased recording from the pre-MWH days when the band was known as Heaven 17 (years before the UK band of the same name). The song is very good, and sounds as good as any early MWH song.
Another highlight is the unreleased demo "Gravity is my enemy". Though I've had the song for years on the 'Rhythm Of Youth' bootleg demos CD, it's nice to see it get a semi-official release.
And while "Heaven" is a great song, it's just the live version pulled directly from the 1985 concert DVD.

Regarding the music: MWH were an amazingly unique and unmistakable band. Most fans agree the first three installments in the 'Folk of the 80's' series are the best - great synthpop hooks with Ivan's very individual style of singing and yelping. I jumped on the bandwagon when "Safety Dance" hit, but found many other amazing songs scattered over their first several releases. The late 80's albums definitely lost some of the initial charm, and resulted in spotty albums. For their lone 90's album, MWH dumped synths in favor of jumping on the Grunge bandwagon. I know, it sounds unbelievable. MWH were amazing for a few years there, and deserve a fresh, new and exciting representation.

So basically this is another repackaging of the 'Collection' CD, songs and mastering, yet with a few interesting alterations. What's really needed is a brand new remaster (from master tapes), as well as an alteration in the standard track listing. Songs like the full length version of "Antarctica", "Security", "Utter Space", "Super 87", "The Great Ones Remember", "Ideas For Walls", "Unsatisfaction", "Folk of the 80's", "Walk on Water", "In the 21st Century" would all be great ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good if you don't already have the MWOH Collection..........2006-06-20

but if you already have that disc, you aren't going to find much new here. It's practically the same disc with only a few track changes. The big reason to get this disc is for the Euromix of Freeways, which is very hard to get on CD. Other than that, the unique tracks on this compilation are "Tomorrow Today" and Gravity is my Enemy", which are both early MWOH tracks before they really tightened their sound to synth pop perfection, and a track called Heaven which, while not a synth pop track, has much of the catchy pop qualities of tracks from their later period--and is a live track. Overall, COLLECTION is a better compilation, the difference being the replacement of previously mentioned tracks with the imperative 12" version of "I Got the Message", one of their synth pop masterpieces, "Moonbeam," "Messiahs Die Young," and "Hey Men."

The bottom line is, instead of infrequent "hits" collections with minor differences in track listings, we need reissues of MWOH first three albums with all the b-sides and 12" versions....

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

4 out of 5 stars Underated and overlooked.......2003-04-20

Truly and example of how varied and polished a band can get. While "sideways" did leave fans a little underfed, "Men & Women..." is a full course.

MWH has consistantly been a good pop band in the very truest sense of the word. This CD showcases lively songs, worldly thoughts, and insightful messages. Ivans voice is well rounded and is showcased in the prominent fashion it should be.

My only word of caution is this: If you are getting this just for the Safety Dance remix - don't. It's an instrumental that leaves much to be desired. And is in all honesty, the sore spot on a rather lovely collection of music.

Also... Ivan released a solo CD, that is simply put 'Proper pop' it's called "the spell". Check it out. It picks up where MWH's leaves off.. and then goes off on it's own path.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly horrible album by a once great band..........2002-11-24

Men Without Hats WERE a good band and are one of my favorite bands today, but this was just a really bad album. Up until this point they churned out nothing but gold, but this, along with the almost-as-bad Sideways, were just god awful. MWH is an electropop band... this "album" has nothing resembling that... The single Hey Men was a really bad choice in the sense that it's their worst song of all time... next to 21st Century Safety Dance (which isn't really a song, but 5 minutes of fake techno and children laughing... pointless? YUP!)... It's pretty bad when their ABBA cover is one of the higher points, since most everything else is completely forgetable! Even hardcore MWH fans hate songs like Underneath The Rainbow and Eloise and I (and it's "intro" which is yet another low point on the album). I really wish i could give TAOWAMWHITTC zero stars... 'cause that's what it deserves... CHA!

4 out of 5 stars Vote with your money.......2002-01-08

That pithy statement is one of my favorite MWH-isms, and it reflects the extra little bit of grittiness that creeps into some of the music on this record, the follow-up to "Pop Goes the World". But despite that and the extensive presence of guitars, this is still definitely a MWH album. Even more earnest than "Pop", if that's possible, the sound here is roughly halfway between that record and the subsequent "Sideways". It's a more reserved album than their others, but the first two songs are worth the price of admission alone. The lead track, "In the 21st Century", still gives me goosebumps.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated... These are Really Good Musicians!.......2000-06-08

There is no better or worse when it comes to Men Without Hats. Every album offers the same dose of ballads and barnstormers. It's unfortunate that their only song known by most people is the over hyped "Safety Dance". These men do some seriously musical stuff if you can listen beyond the "slightly gruff at first" lead singing.
"You & Me" is absolutely pretty. Sweeping strings and lovely piano dominate in all the right places. The lyrics (sample: "Then I saw your face, and thought how life's so good to me; we were meant to meet each other in the middle of a mystery; We were meant to be together, You & Me") may not be pure poetry, but they are charming, and will have you singing along with the chorus on your first listen.
"Everybody's Selling Something" is one such barnstormer. This song really gets you moving! The Hats have come to be known for intelligent and quirky lyrics, and this song really shows off their talent for clever wordplay as well as their knack for perfect stadium pop/rock. This is one of the best of that type they have ever done.
I got through almost the entire song "S.O.S." before realizing where I had heard it before. They have turned a sucrose dripping ABBA song into a proud symphonic/rock tour de force. You just have to hear this! Lot's of fun is heard on "Eloise & I". Long before Tori Amos hammered the harpsichord in her anthems, the Hats were using it just like any other band instrument. In this song they use it for pounding rhythms as well as subtle twinkling. I'm sitting here bouncing all over my chair just humming it to myself. You will hum and bounce too!
These are just a few examples of why you should listen further to this group. There's lots more good stuff here, and on their other earlier collections. Don't let "Safety Dance" make you miss out on all the other things they offer. The Hats are realy fun to put on.

Men Without Hat's bouncy classic "The Safety Dance" remains one of the defining moments of the early 1980s with its irresistibly catchy bass-line and Ivan Doroschuk's bold "We can go when we want to, the night is young and so am I." Beyond their biggest hit, these Canadian synth-popsters also put out a couple of exceedingly chipper albums. Songs like "Pop Goes the World" and "I Got the Message" overflow with giddy innocence and cascades of cheesy Casio riffs. They even manage to perk up a Roxy Music cover ("Editions of You"). While the aspirations to meaning, and the faux-urgency, don't hold up, this disk is guaranteed to bring smiles at any 1980s-style dance party. --Heidi MacDonald

4 out of 5 stars Great band and collection.......2007-01-07

Actually these guys could be called 3 hit wonders: The Safety Dance and Pop Goes The World were hit US singles, and the 12" single of Moonbeam hit high on the club charts. Unfortunately, the 12" single isn't here! And a lot of songs are missing from Men Without Hats' vague-concept album masterpiece Pop Goes The World (which even gets Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson's stamp of approval with a guest spot).

But then again, this disc does include the should-have-been single "I Like" and some other good tracks, and both versions of Safety Dance, so it's not bad.

    1 out of 5 stars Twenty Bucks?! They're Kidding, Right? {1.5 Stars}.......2006-09-14

I can't believe that's what this is selling for. To be completely honest, I don't know why anyone would want this album, let alone pay twenty bucks for it. There's no way in the world this disc is anywhere close to being worth more than five bucks.

I bought this out of Goodwill (in excellent shape) for 50 cents simply because I, like so many other people, loved "The Safety Dance" when it came out. This disc also includes an extended mix of "The Safety Dance" that's four and a half minutes long (the regular version clocks in at just under 3 minutes). Those are the only two songs on the entire album that are remotely close to being listenable. Everything else is garbage.

I guess if Canadian synth pop from the 80's is your thing, then this would make for a decent pick up. Otherwise, avoid like the plague.

If you're looking to buy this album, shoot me an e-mail. I'll gladly slash these prices.

Everytime when I listen to that song on the radio it just cracks me up it's so funny. The beeps to it are funny. I just get a kick out of this song it's great. Men Without Hats is a good band.

5 out of 5 stars One Word .........2005-01-27

MIDGET. I really don't like Men without Hats. ..why didn't they have any hats? hmmm. Well anyway I give this 5 stars because in their video they had a midget running all around wearing silly clothes and stuff. And the song itself is pretty bizarre. I'm not sure why I enjoy it so much but I do.

You think singing this song to midgets in real life would be a bad idea?

I hope one day, for their most excellent contribution to music history, they are awarded hats.

    5 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure!.......2005-01-24

Okay, so this music will win you about as many 'coolness' points as taking a primered Yugo to Wednesday Night Drag Racing. Only this particular Yugo packs 500 ponies under the hood! So while it may not be as 'respectable' as such current bands as Creed, Hoobastank, Nickelback, or Linkin Park, it is certainly much more FUN! So GO FOR IT! I won't tell anyone......

    . . . playing at a venue near you.

Has there ever been a finer representation of this essential music? I don't think so. One thinks, for example, of Robert Walter, or Skerik's Syncopated septet, or Stanton Moore, or Garage a Trois, and one must conclude that this is the granddaddy of 'em all.

    Why?

More res, I'd say. That is, more soul, more heartfelt, irony-free, postmodernless authenticity than anybody else.

It's not that Will Bernard is a naif.

    No.

It's just that he doesn't play games where others, no matter how pure their motives, manage to slip into funk self-consciousness and vitiate whatever authentic vibe they've got going.

    How does he do it?

I confess, I don't know. Purity of heart? Perhaps. Left Coast ur-freedom audacity? Again, perhaps.

My own view is that it doesn't matter. If a SF band can trump a N'awlins funk endeavor, in these postmodern times, so be it. Who am I to grouse, to point fingers, to wring hands?

Aren't we the land of the free, the home of the brave? Then let's recognize the Big Daddy of Funk and move on from there.

    OK?

5 out of 5 stars Up there with his best work!.......2006-05-26

After a rather dissapointing album in "It's Real Out Here" Celly Cel came out with an undenieble classic. Don't mind the weak and uninspired album title, this is up there with Celly Cel's best albums. You may even argue that this is his best album, overall, in terms of cincistency and versatility. Celly Cel just grew up and matured as an artist, While his 2005 album "It's real out here" was a hit and miss and suffered of weak production at times, "Slaps, Straps and Baseball Hats" is a perfect album, perdiod. There isn't even one song you'll skip. The production and topics are VERY versatile. You get a more mature Celly Cel, who's not only about killing or flossing. You get all kinds of topics all over the album: You've got some club/party bangers ("Shake Something", "Open Doors"), straight Gangsta songs ("G'z Up", "Sheep or Wolf"), Sex Songs ("Freaky", "4-Play") and even some deeper songs, where Celly Cel reflects about his life and shows his unique story-telling abiliy ("I'm Leaving You", "Nuthin' From Me", "Just Once"). This album is just VERSATILE! You get so many different things on it, and that's why you might argue it's Cel's best album. Another masterpice of a song is "Bay Classis", where Celly Cel pays tribute to the Bay Classic songs where he raps viciously over the beats of some of the Bays Best songs ever (such as "Don't Fight the Feeling", "I Got 5 On It", "Sideways", "Game Recognise Game", "Don't Give me no bammer", "2 Of America's Most Wanted"... When he starts rapping over the beat of "Heat 4 Yo Azz" you'll totally get nuts! Bay Classics is just a sick song!!!!!). As you already know, Celly Cel is an OG in this game, he's no longer a little g from Hillside, HE's one of the Bosses from the Bay, and he spits game all over this album. Lyrically he's always been very gifted, but he also gets real personal on this album. As far as his flows are concerned, he's got one of the best flows you've ever heard (Cel raps with great confidence and he can switch up and rap over any beat) and his voice is aslo smooth and special. Guest appearences are by Turf Talk, Luni Coleone, The Game (in a very old verse, since he sounds nothing like he raps these days), Sean T, Mistah FAB, Jayda (very talented singer), Lil' Flip, Levitti, Malika, The Hillside Stranglas... But of course Celly Cel doesn't need guests and his verses are always the tightest ones! Production on the album is just amazing - other than Sean T (who came out with some tremendous beats) all the producers are unknown, yet they do a great work. There isn't even one beat that you won't dig. This album is a masterpiece, and should be add to the Bay Classic list as well. Don't sleep on Celly Cel and Realside Records, support the Real. This is one of the best albums to come out of the West Coast in the last 3-5 years.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Since Killa Kali.......2006-04-05

THIS ALBUM IS KNOCKIN!!! I HEARD THAT BAY CLASSICS TRACK ON THE RADIO AND MADE SURE TO PRE-ORDER IT RIGHT AFTER I HEARD IT. THIS IS DEFINATELY THE BEST ALBUM SINCE KILLA KALI, IT COMES ON SLAPPIN WITH A HYPHY TRACK FEATURING LUNI COLEONE AND TURF TALK. HE MADE SURE TO GET LEVITTI WHO HE'S BEEN WORKIN WIT FOR YEARS TO GIVE IT THAT CLASSIC TOUCH. PLUS HE WENT AND GOT GAME AND LIL FLIP ON IT... STRAIGHT HEAT. ALBUM SLAPS ALL THE WAY, DEFINATELY A MUST HAVE FOR ANY RAP FAN'S COLLECTION. SUPPORT THE HYPHY MOVEMENT AND PICK THIS UP.
