Their multiple piercings, shaved heads, and abundant tattoos have them labeled a punk band, but on their fourth album, Good Charlotte--led by twin brothers Joel (lead vocals) and Benji (lead guitar) Madden--fall much more under the umbrella of 1970s arena rock and mainstream ballads. There is the occasional foray into the pop-punk mode of previous records, including the distorted-vocal rap "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" and "Broken Hearts Parade," which sounds like Green Day with horns. It's easy to see the maturation in the Maddens' songwriting on such tracks as "The River," a surveillance of the inner workings of Los Angeles, the grass-is-greener pop song "Something Else," and "Where Would We Be," a break-up ballad about Joel Madden's split with pop princess Hilary Duff. With a piano lead and strident chorus, Madden admits, "Now I must confess that I'm a sinking ship/And I'm anchored by the weight of my heart." Browbeaten in theory, like sister songs "Misery," "Victim of Love," and "Break Her Heart," Good Morning Revival offers hints of optimism that grow with the record and reach the summit with the closing pop song, "March On." The harmonic chorus jubilantly declares, "Like soldiers we can make it through the night/We'll see the sun/March on." Whether punkers or mainstream rockers, it's apparent that Good Charlotte will continue the march. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:

If you still feel like you want to buy this album, you should read the lyrics for all the songs and see for yourself.
But my advice - check out other bands who actually care about their fans.
I will never buy another GC album and I threw away my old ones.

Despite the piercings and spiky hairdos of Good Charlotte frontmen Joel and Benji Madden, the filth and the fury of punk are not in evidence on The Young and the Hopeless. Rather, Good Charlotte lean toward the sunny power pop favored by the lighter Huntingdon Beach, California, outfits. Nevertheless, with the title track and "The Anthem" ("I'm just a minor threat"), the band appeals directly to high-school outsiders. Relationship problems are delved into in "Wondering" and "Say Anything," and they even find space to explore comic horror with "My Bloody Valentine." So they're not as intense or enraged as the hardcore likes of Black Flag or even Linkin Park. But the undeniably strong melodies this bunch comes up with have plenty of appeal on their own terms. --Dominic WillsCustomer Reviews:

A Decent First Album..........2006-02-16
This is Good Charlotte's first album. They are not nearly as refined here as they are on, "The Young and the Hopeless" but at the same time that adds a certain quality to it. While their latest album, "The Chronicles of Life and Death" seems to have suffered OVER-production, this album has been UNDER-produced. I would recommend, if you're new to Good Charlotte, picking up, "The Young and the Hopeless" to hear these guys at their best and then back-tracking to this album.
Still, if you insist on starting with this album it isn't going to kill you. The vocals are straight and clean for the most part. The harmony isn't bad at all and these songs are fun to sing along with. On the down side they do get whiney once or twice, so if you can't stand Avril Lavigne or New Found Glory, you may be turned off by some of the vocals. Overall, I'd give the vocals 4 stars.
The guitar isn't mixed very well in my opinion. It seems kind of, "in the background" not what I want from a rock group. Solos are lacking but the riffs are catchy. Guitar gets 3 stars.
Bass is fantastic, mixed quite well for a rock band. They have a few songs with nice outstanding bass but for the most part the bass sits where it should, holding the song up silently unless one listens for it. Excellent but nothing to talk about. 4 stars.
Drums are also "in the background" at times. And you won't find many beats you'll want to learn to play yourself or get stuck in your head. Overall, it could be better... 2 stars.
Finally, lyrics. Love 'em or hate 'em. That's what I say. I know I enjoy the simplicity found here while others can't stand it. If you want creative lyrics, go buy Death Cab for Cutie's album, "Transatlanticism". If you want some fun rock riffs and hooks, pick up GCs first album, "Good Charlotte."
I hope this has been a fairly unbiased review and I hope it helps you out!
Thanks!
Loonies..........2006-01-08
A band that's been through a few things here and there; a band trying their best.
I'm sorry, but.. What exactly inspires these people to make music like this? The fans?
The only reason for caring about these fans is money. It's all money, and that is one of the reasons that this band has had even the slightest hint of success. There is no originality in this music. There is no quality. There is no talent.
The guitar playing isn't very amusing, the singing flat-out SUCKS, the drumming sounds like an eight-year-old playing with drumsticks, and as for the lyrics: they're tacky, they're annoying, and they are very childish.
The fans of this terrible music are either:
A) Young children that discovered this band either from sibilings, listening to Radio Disney, watching MTV, or merely getting the damned album.
B) Poseurs.
C) People that like all music out there, or
D) People with a degree of mental retardation.
Please don't think I do not know what I'm talking about. I know too many people that listen to Good Charlotte, and basically all of them fall under those categories. I've listening to Good Charlotte myself.
And PLEASE, for the sake of everything GOOD in this world, do NOT think or reply to this with a 'well I bet the preppy stuff YOU like SUCKS!'
This all sounds sloppy and terrible, but I have to say what I mean and mean what I say, now don't I? And I'm not telling anyone what to listen to, but I'd suggest to show some self-decency by getting into My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and/or Hawthorne Heights. (Not that I like those bands... They're just slightly better replacements for this garbage.)
Good day to non-fans..

Excellence!.......2007-04-22
Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.
The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.
Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".
A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.
The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.
Highly recommended.
"his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07
Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.
Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Bad Charlotte! Absolutely horrible Charlotte!.......2007-01-10
GC SUCKS!.......2007-01-08
Anyways, back to this piece of crap band. This album just flat-out sucks. All the tracks are terrible. The lead singer sounds sexually frustrated which is absolutely annoying to hear. The guitar playing is a joke. These guitarists clearly don't know how to create a good riff. All they use is power chords and distortion. The production is terrible too. Btw, if you wanna know how whiny the lead singer can get, just listen to the first single off the album. It has him doing a spoken part which sounds more like a crying four-year-old than anything. It is ridiculous but not surprising when I hear most high school students saying how good this band is or that they rock hard. People, you don't know anything about what good music is or what rocks hard. For something that rocks hard, try Pantera, Metallica, Killswitch Engage for that.
I will be training to become an SBI agent in two years and know that I will have to deal with many juveniles in my line of work which makes me hate this band even more b/c that's what most of them listen too and rap(don't get me started on how much I despise this). I don't have a lot of respect for adolescents these days come to think of it. The fact that many of them are such spoiled brats and complain that their lives are horrible b/c their parents are too strict really pisses me off. In essence that's what this band talks about in their lyrics, especially on this album. I have had all I can take of bands like this and their fans who are ungreatful to be alive. This album deserves 0 stars, btw.
P.S. Also, if I have offended anyone by this posting, deal with it!

An Angsty Saga.......2006-09-29
Anyways, on this CD, I think the only song I like is "Predictable." I was resistant to it, but it wore me down. The speech-rant part in the middle cracks me up every time. Sorry, Benji and Joel. I know you showed vulnerability, but that whole "You're never coming back!" stuff makes me laugh.
It's not really good, and not my favorite thing ever, but it's fun to sing along like angst-filled pseudo-punks (with the windows firmly closed, to keep our cred intact, of course).

Karl Muck (1859-1940), one of the greatest Wagnerian conductors of the generation immediately following those who knew and worked directly with the master, was responsible for leading the performances of Parsifal at Bayreuth from 1901 until 1930. Wagner's last opera was, in a word, Muck's property, and this magnificent two-CD set documents his unique and intense relationship with that work in exemplary fashion. It contains Muck's accounts of the Prelude to Act I and a sizable amount of Act III, recorded with the chorus and orchestra of the Berlin State Opera, and of excerpts from Acts I and II, recorded with the chorus and orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival. The recordings, made in 1927 and 1928, reflect the glow of a golden age in Wagner interpretation, and thanks to Naxos's extraordinary job of remastering, that reflection is no longer a dim one.The great Wagnerian soprano Frida Leider, whose voice is not heard on these recordings, encountered Muck in his later years at Bayreuth and was struck by the slowness of his tempos in Parsifal. Indeed, they are slow: the Act I prelude takes 15:55 by the clock and seems even longer, yet the effect is sublime. Muck sustains the prelude as if on a single breath, just at the point where the pulse almost disappears; the music seems to arise out of silence and darkness to become light and spirit. This is just what Wagner intended. The Act III excerpts, which feature tenor Gotthelf Pistor as Parsifal and bass Ludwig Hofmann as Gurnemanz, are also superb. Pistor's is quite a fine voice--he was a real heldentenor--and the drama is palpable. But the greatest treasure here is the playing of the State Opera orchestra. Muck had been its chief conductor for 20 years, from 1892, and the chemistry between him and his erstwhile colleagues is particularly remarkable. They are majestic in the "Good Friday Spell," and they bring enormous grandeur and radiance to the closing pages of the opera. What a superb band this was!
The segments recorded in Bayreuth are only a little less enchanting, largely because the chorus preparation leaves a lot to be desired (the chromaticism in Wagner's writing was difficult then, and still is). But we hear the original Bayreuth bells in the Act I transformation music (they were carried up to Berlin for the Act III processional music as well); cast to Wagner's own specifications, and melted down for the German war effort in 1940, they are truly a "voice" from the past.
The two discs are superbly laid out, and include, in addition to the Muck material, a four-part orchestral suite from Parsifal conducted by Alfred Hertz and recorded in 1913 with the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as the "Good Friday Spell" played by the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra under the direction of Siegfried Wagner, the composer's son, recorded in 1927. The transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn are the best yet of these historic recordings. --Ted Libbey

As Good As It Gets.......2002-07-02
Great Wagner Performances at an Unbeatable Price.......2002-01-23
Along with the Muck recordings from 1927 and 1928, there are also recordings of music from Parsifal by Siegfried Wagner (the composer's son) and Alfred Hertz (the latter excerpts were recorded in 1913, in the acoustic era, and some sonic allowances should be made for them).
But you'll be buying this set (as I hope you will) for the Karl Muck tracks. They are truly amazing. When you consider that he was forced to record this music on 78 R.P.M. records in snippets of three minutes or so, the quality of his performances is astounding. Audio Restoration Engineer Mark Obert-Thorn has done a marvellous job restoring these discs so that they sound as good as they possibly can, and Naxos has put them out at an unbeatable price. If you have any interest in Wagner at all, I would grab this set.
One more thing. On the 6th track of the first disc, Muck conducts the Transformation Music for the Grail Scene in Act I. In that scene you hear the bells that Wagner had constructed for the first performances of Parsifal at his own theater at Bayreuth (where these recordings were made). Those bells were later melted down by the Nazis for ammunition during World War II. Listen for them -- they carry you right back to the sound that Wagner must have heard at the premiere.
for the serious Wagner enthusiast, it's indispensable.......2002-01-03
This set is not for everybody, as it contains 3 performances of the Good Friday Music, one of which is purely orchestral, and two accounts of the Act I Prelude. Both CDs play for almost 80 minutes. In general the woodwind and string playing can be heard most clearly, and Gotthelf Pistor's assumption of the title role is strong and clear in spite of the great age of the recording.
Artistically, I consider Karl Muck's reading of Parsifal to be peerless. The Act III excerpts are very moving in spite of the constricted sound, and one cannot help but admire the efforts of all the performers, since they were using very short takes for recording onto 78s. I don't think anyone today could take the Good Friday Music and split it into 3 sections, and make it sound on record as if there were no interruptions at all. The contributions by Alfred Hertz and Siegfried Wagner are not quite in the same class, but are also well worth hearing.
Overall, at the lowest price range, this cannot be too strongly recommended, even at the risk of duplicating prior releases. A desert island set.

Christmas albums by opera divas hardly make an exalted genre. Usually they involve overblown arrangements, hackneyed material, and singers sight-reading music they don't particularly like and making lame attempts at singing in English. With all her integrity, Anne Sofie von Otter would never do such a thing, and she hasn't here. This disc is a personal, eclectic mix, with the mezzo-soprano sounding sincere and approachable by sticking to the lower end of her range using small-ensemble arrangements you might hear in an evening sitting around the fire. In fact, rarely has Otter sung with such warmth as in Pereic Moraeus's "Koppangen," accompanied by accordion, guitar, violin, and mandolin. Not only is her English good but she seems to connect with the language emotionally. Amid the cozy, jazzy renditions of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" and "Silent Night," there are a few lapses into eccentricity, such as an atonal string ensemble arrangement of "White Christmas" that easily could've been done by Alban Berg, and some Nordic-language forays in which Otter seems to be getting in touch with her primitivistic Viking roots. With good taste displayed elsewhere, she's allowed. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Musically interesting Christmas alternative.......2004-12-09
This disc is worth buying for the first and last tracks alone, a haunting Swedish number that is now so much part of my Christmas that I can't believe I'd never heard of the song until a few years ago (one track is the Swedish version, the other an English translation). Much as I love holiday music, I have to say that this is one of the only holiday discs I'll listen to throughout the year.

This cd is superb. I also saw her concert with his cd life.
It gives you a old fasioned feeling of a warm /close Christmas.

With her voice Anne Soie does do magic.
She is classical singer number 1 !
It's my best Christmas cd!

Something different -- provacative, but very enjoyable.......2002-12-16
Anne Sofie von Otter's fans have long-since learned to expect the unexpected from this exceptional singer and, on this recording, now several years old, that's what she offers - the unexpected. With only a couple of exceptions, the songs are traditional Christmas fare, though usually with an added twist: the distorted rhythm that makes "Tomorrow will be my dancing day" really dance, or the jazz blue notes that take "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" to the cocktail lounge. (In this, as well as White Christmas, Ms. von Otter bears more than a passing resemblance to another great cross-over artist, the late Eileen Farrell.) In this free rhythmic treatment, Deck the Halls, arranged for accordion and violin accompaniment, is much less a fa-la-la madrigal than an introspective folk-song that builds on its own momentum. In contrast, the simple hymn, Beautiful tone Star of Bethlehem, which Ingvar Wixell recorded many years ago on his Christmas offering, shows Ms. von Otter's lush voice to full effect.
Her subtle use of vibrato in "I wonder as I wander" (along with a provocative arrangement) captures the Scotch-Irish influence on the folk music of Appalachians without being a condescending parody while the marimba accompaniment and fiddle obbligato to the French "Il est le divin enfant" evoke an unidentifiable folk music - is it Spanish or French countryside? Or, is the point that it is universal?
True, a couple of the arrangements stretch beyond my endurance: Although Ms. von Otter does lavish some beautiful tone on Cantique de Noel (O, Holy Night) I found the over-echoed, new-wave arrangement irritating and White Christmas, rather than being nostalgic verges on surreal.
In total, there are twenty songs, each a little gem of interpretation. As I mentioned above, sometimes I don't really like the interpretations or arrangement; however, I never doubt for a moment, that Ms. von Otter believes what she is singing; her commitment to communicating through music is never in doubt. By the way, her English diction is exemplary - a lesson for many singers for whom English is first language.
