Soul Coughing expand their funky free-for-all with El Oso, a sturdy shack of samples rattling around in a boogie cup. No, it's not a disco revival, just a new way of grooving. Showing more muscle than on their previous release, Irresistable Bliss, frontman M. Doughty spews nonsequiturs between the band's airy jams as if he were the blue-eyed hip-hop equivalent of Robyn Hitchcock. Doughty and the band shake hands with the loping "Circles," whisper sweet nothings to the piano-fed "Blame," and create semi-organic drum & bass on "Blame." "$300," the most addictive cut, slips under a raga spell as keyboardist M'ark De Gli Antoni spikes the brew with digital dust. Aside from "So Far I Have Not Found the Science" (a nearly direct rip-off of their own "Blue Eyed Devil," from their debut release, Ruby Vroom), Soul Coughing have pushed their techno-funk sound further, making El Oso equally limber and bracing. --Jason Josephes

This time out, the group have used drum & bass/jungle/whatever-they're-calling-it-this-week rhythmic figures as a launch pad for their groove mine.... The tracks' sultry pulsing funk is met with [M.] Doughty's repetitive meditation on urban paranoia. These clashing elements create a whole other world that's sexy and psychotic....

5 out of 5 stars "I'm gonna slip into the feel like Han Solo".......2007-01-26

This CD is excellent. Soul Coughing rocks the free world. My favorite song on here is probably $300 (you need to hear this song). If everyone tuned into Soul Coughing, some extremely groovilicious things would go down. Rolling is a great track for driving. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes some good music. I would also check out Ruby Vroom. and Irresistible Bliss. and all other Soul Coughing.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Coughing (1998).......2006-02-26

I lent this album to friends in the UK with the warning ''Go on, try and get one of these songs OUT of your head.'' It's that stick in the mind. Once one of these songs gets into your head, it doesn't let go for weeks upon weeks. And when you're finally free, you just may tentatively approach El Oso once again, daring to try your luck with another song, or the whole album in one sitting.

What an amazing album.

Soul Coughing were doing some stuff on American shores that was already making its way across Europe with a frenzy. So you have to give them credit for opening up the styles of Drum & Bass to America, and catching up with Europe's quickly rising scene. I mean, you can go throughout music history and find elements of this and that, and probably disprove what I've just said. Or you can just buy El Oso, listen to it, hear how different it sounds to a lot of acts that were roaming the sterile jungles of certain American music scenes, and then zip over across the water to England or France and hear where some music was going.

The first song I fell in love with on El Oso was ''St Louise Is Listening''. It's just 'mean'. It was Mike Doughty's voice that pretty much had me enthralled with the song. Gritty, slightly nasal, but with so much character that it made the song have ''personality''. Like it needed that anyway. The groove was impeccable. I had first heard Soul Coughing with the single ''Super Bon Bon'', and it took ages to find out who that was by after first hearing it. By the time I found out, El Oso had been released. I can't remember what I had heard first from this album, but it must have been in relation to finding ''Super Bon Bon'' and the band who did it. I must have listened to another song to see what they were like, and then El Oso was on my playlist for at least 2 years. I haven't listened to it in awhile, but a few weeks ago I did hear ''I Miss The Girl'' and started getting withdrawal symptoms. El Oso is a dangerous beast, I have to say that.

It's the melodies that are absolutely baiting. ''Rolling'' just in its repetitive nature gets you to instantly recognise the song and get it rolling in your own head. Plus the beat is just ... well, can't really describe it. You just have to hear the song really. ''Monster Man'' just kicks @ss. ''Blame'' is TOO catchy. I was surprised that ''Circles'' was the song that came off of this and was more well known to many. Not my favourite pick from El Oso. It was far simpler and confined compared to its brothers, sisters and cousins that existed on this album, and a far cry from ''So Far I Have Not Found The Science''. Or ''Fully Retractable''.

It really is an album to purchase. My British friends who heard it came back to me weeks later asking me what I had given them. It worked like a virus. They couldn't get the album out of their heads. Most times, all they could manage to say was '' That album's great, how did you hear about them?''

I don't know! It took me ages to find out who did ''Super Bon Bon''.

EL OSO is worthy of purchase. A must have.

2 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to..........2005-12-27

One of the highlights of 1994 was the release of an astounding, innovative album by the name of "Ruby Vroom," the debut from Soul Coughing. Even now on the finishing edge of 2005, days away from 2006, that album sounds fresh, new and timeless. Intelligent beat-poetry-styled lyrics mesh with left-field samples, scratchy guitar and the deepest upright bass grooves anyone is likely to hear. Not a bad track on that record, not even close. A true classic in every sense of the word.

So what happened??? Something went wrong along the way. Perhaps the band members feared that their initial formula wasn't likely to lead to commercial success, or maybe they craved variety...anyways, in comparison with their debut, this album sounds flat and pallid, a weak shell of what used to be. The deep funk grooves are replaced with wannbe-electronica-styled drumming. The samples sound conventional and almost cliche. The songs are repetitive and predictable. And worst of all, gone are the unique, abstract observations of M. Doughty, replaced with repetitive non-lyrics of the worst kind. The day I bought it (used, no wonder) I returned it in a fit of disappointment. Granted, "Circles" is a decent pop song. But it's not Soul Coughing good.

Now perhaps my highly negative opinion is simply a reflection of how much I love the band's debut. Had they not set the bar so high, this may very well merit three stars. But this is Soul Coughing we are talking about. Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Repetitive...nonsensical...genius.......2005-09-09

El Oso is repetitive, nonsensical, erratic, and silly. And I absolutely love it. Because it's also fun and catchy. You won't be able to get these songs out of your head - because they're simple and repetitive, and they're just so darn good.

I'm still trying to figure out if the members of Soul Coughing are deep, philosophical geniuses or if they're just goofy geniuses. But whatever the case, they're geniuses.

"Circles" pulled me in with its craziness - and its catchiness. After the first time I heard it, I couldn't stop singing "I don't need to walk around in circles, walk around in circles, walk around in circles..." (I've often had this problem with Cake's music, too.)

El Oso isn't just "Circles," though. It's so much more. You'll find upbeat songs that will have you bouncing around the living room (be careful not to make the CD player skip), and you'll find smooth, bass-y, jazzy numbers like "Maybe I'll Come Down." Sometimes you'll find both in the same song.

There's no way I could ever single out the best song on this album. It's one of those albums that I'll listen to and say, "I love this song!" each time a new song starts. It starts with "Rolling," a great song to start an album - or a road trip - and it ends with "The Incumbent," a quiet - and almost hypnotic - fade-out.

These guys experiment with strange sounds and strange beats - and they do it almost flawlessly.

5 out of 5 stars Best Soul Coughing...Utterly Amazing.......2005-05-18

I have been reading some of these reviews which are generally written by Soul Coughing fans and usually take the form of "It's no Ruby Vroom or Irresistable Bliss but it's still Soul Coughing so...4 stars!" These kind of reviews suck. Yeah it's still freaking Soul Coughing, why waste your time writing a review and not giving a rating based on the music? As a long-time SC fan and present follower of Mike Doughty who, for those of you who don't know, has an excellent solo career right now, I can honestly say I prefer this album over all others. I've read on blogs and sites that Yuval and Sebastian have admitted not playing their best on this album and not caring as much as on the first too because they were growing tired of Doughty at this point. Whether or not that is true, maybe the anger fueled the play. Songs such as "Miss the Girl", "Monster Man", and "$300" are so freaking unique and catchy that I can't even put it into words. The music world lost a great thing following "El Oso". This is only band that i can think of that I could consider irreplaceable, save a reunion...but that ain't gonna happen folks, no way. Trust me I've checked the odds. Sebastian stated on a site that becuase of Mike going on his own, Yuval is starving in the streets. Anyways, back to the music. This album has the heaviest drum play and deepest upright bass of any of the other albums. These two features of Soul Coughing, along with a DJ that plays cartoon music and an avant garde vocalist I guess, are what make Soul Coughing so unique. The fact that these features are amplified on this album make it a no brainer for fans who follow SC because of their originality. The album is extremely broad. Listen the "Circles" and then "Pensacola". You will never hear two songs so dissimilar in style on the same album ever again. I guarantee it.
Also, an FYI for those fans wanting more SC. Word on the street is that Olympus Mons Records has signed the remaining three guys, Yuval, Sebastian, and Mark, to a deal under the name Tempo Team. Go to www.olympusmonsrecords.com and write the owner an email to hurry the guy along. And check out Doughty too. His Cd's are available on this site if you don't already know.

Album Description

Three years removed from the riveting full-length debut, "Highly Refined Pirates", this highly stylized Seattle indie-pop group flaunts substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop on their second Suicide Squeeze full-length. Weaving through territories long established by '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush), '80s proto punks (Fugazi), and '90s art rock mind-f*cks (Jawbox, Joan Of Arc), Minus The Bear invoke the modern love affair between dance driven strategy and lush, Upper Pacific sweater rock. Features appearances by Judah Nagler and Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen), Michael Richardson (The New Trust), and Heather Duby.

5 out of 5 stars Atleast Botch broke up for something.......2007-06-26

When listenig to Minus the Bear it's hard to believe that the pioneering metalcore band Botch had a hand in their creation. But alas, after that bands demise in 2002 Dave Knudson formed Minus the Bear, and Menos El Oso, their sophmore album is an indie rock spectacle of genre defying elements. Often, indie rock is down trodden mesh of boring linear chords and syrup soaked, avant-garde like lyrics. But Minus the Bear manage to keep the music up tempo, and still sing relevant and deep lyrics. The guitar work is more complex than the usual indie fair, and the keyboards/production by Matt Bayles is top notch as always. If you're looking for an album and a band that you can always be in the mood for, than Minus the Bear's Menos El Oso is just what the doctor ordered. Beware Botch fans, this is far, far removed from We Are The Romans.
Buy it. Play it. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Album To Date?.......2007-06-02

When you listen to Minus the Bear, there's a certain sound you expect to hear. That smart, quirky, bleep bloop rock. Finger taps and hot dance beats mixed with electronica and non abrasive vocals. My friend travis would argue that Highly Refined Pirates is their best (and quintessential) work, but I believe Menos El Oso is the superior album. The album is not boring as some may claim- it's just more mature. MTB's song writing is at it's best, along with the quality of the musicianship. The album is solemn and beautiful with enough hooks to keep you coming back no matter what mood your in.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the last couple of years.......2007-03-09

I can't praise this album enough. The instrumentals, the vocals, the lyrics...All are absolutely gorgeous. This disc is a masterpiece and I anticipate good things from these guys in the future. One of the best driving albums I've ever heard. Don't want to ramble too much so here's a breakdown of the songs.

4 out of 5 stars I Can Feel Myself Dancing Already [4.5 Stars].......2006-09-10

A truly unique incarnation this Minus The Bear is. I was one of the many fans who initially looked into this band for the sheer fact that Dave Knudson of Botch fame was handling guitar duties. And was I surprised when I listened? Oh yes. Dancy, jazzy rhythms? Intelligent, yet humorous lyrics? Guitar playing that sounds like no one else? All these things define exactly what Minus The Bear is all about, and much in the tradition of their previous works (notably 2002's "Highly Refined Pirates" full length and 2004's "They Make Beer Commercials Like This" EP), MTB have crafted any extremely gratifying listen with their self-titled album "Menos El Eso". This strange indie rock hybrid sound that Minus The Bear is experimenting with is definitely working wonders for them.

Whether it's the catchy choruses, the subtle atmospheric elements, or pounding rhythm section that catches your ear, it's almost guaranteed that after one listen, you'll be insanely hooked on Minus The Bear. I can speak from personal experience. Hits like the opener "The Game Needed Me" and "Drilling" offer up healthy doses of melody to go along with their instant likability, and are perfect introductions for anyone not familiar with the band or their sound. Commonly described by many as a group of musical virtuosos (which is entirely true, as they're both great songwriters and musicians), Dave's guitar playing is what really defines the band's sound. Could you imagine tracks like "Pachuca Sunrise" or "Hooray" being backed by discordant power chords or zany mathematical rhythms like those of the Botch days? Didn't think so. However the same skill and technique which Dave used to compose many Botch songs, has obviously played a key factor in how he has written so many great and memorable guitar parts for this record. Add in a rhythm section that perfectly compliments his approach, as well as an electronics mastermind and an energetic, captivating front man (who can sing and write the best of them) and every piece of the puzzle comes together. This is clearly the most promising act to come out of Botch's demise.

"Menos El Eso" was absolutely one of my favorite records of last year, and it's still in healthy circulation in my listening this year. Front to back there's no filler or lacking of any kind (and without the little one minute interludes and skits of "Highly Refined Pirates", the record seems to have much more direction), and every song will be stuck in your head after one listen. If experimental, new-wave flavored indie rock sounds appealing to you, then Minus The Bear should be a top priority on your must listen list. This is one of those records that won't take long to grow on you. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars this isn't music, it's a miracle!.......2006-06-19

    Album Description

Milwaukee's El Oso is not quite the lumbering bunch one would assume from their name. Taking cues from the most divergent elements of pop, El Oso weave together simple, stark melodies with a tinkling, underlying gurgle of experimentation - and Contraphonic Music Ltd. is thrilled to present you with the group's debut. The tracks were recorded in an old, spooky warehouse by Josh Kristopeit, and mixed by Kristian Riley (Decibully, The New Sense, the Promise Ring). Whichever Chapter Covers Now finely balances El Oso's singer/songwriter influences with spacious musicianship and sparkling electronic flourishes. Watch for them on the road throughout 2005!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2005-12-14

I picked up both this album and Troubled Hubble's "Pentubia" when they played at my college stage. Judging by the live acts I held high hopes for Penturbia and not much for "Which ever chapter covers now."

    I was quite wrong.

The album itself is excellent; it features thoughtful lyrics and good instumentation but the artful (and tasteful) sound editing (which is done by the band themselves) really pulls the music together. The haunting backgrounds on "Mt. Iceberg" and the juxtaposition of technobeats and acoustic guitar in "Tonights Now Tomorrow" really showcase the bands diverse talent.

The band itself has a psuedo-country feeling that leaves a Counting Crows or Wilco feeling with you. But they are truely unique.

From beginning to end it's an excellent album and I hope to see more of this band.
