Soul Coughing expand their funky free-for-all with El Oso, a sturdy shack of samples rattling around in a boogie cup. No, it's not a disco revival, just a new way of grooving. Showing more muscle than on their previous release, Irresistable Bliss, frontman M. Doughty spews nonsequiturs between the band's airy jams as if he were the blue-eyed hip-hop equivalent of Robyn Hitchcock. Doughty and the band shake hands with the loping "Circles," whisper sweet nothings to the piano-fed "Blame," and create semi-organic drum & bass on "Blame." "$300," the most addictive cut, slips under a raga spell as keyboardist M'ark De Gli Antoni spikes the brew with digital dust. Aside from "So Far I Have Not Found the Science" (a nearly direct rip-off of their own "Blue Eyed Devil," from their debut release, Ruby Vroom), Soul Coughing have pushed their techno-funk sound further, making El Oso equally limber and bracing. --Jason Josephes

This time out, the group have used drum & bass/jungle/whatever-they're-calling-it-this-week rhythmic figures as a launch pad for their groove mine.... The tracks' sultry pulsing funk is met with [M.] Doughty's repetitive meditation on urban paranoia. These clashing elements create a whole other world that's sexy and psychotic....

Soul Coughing (1998).......2006-02-26
What an amazing album.
Soul Coughing were doing some stuff on American shores that was already making its way across Europe with a frenzy. So you have to give them credit for opening up the styles of Drum & Bass to America, and catching up with Europe's quickly rising scene. I mean, you can go throughout music history and find elements of this and that, and probably disprove what I've just said. Or you can just buy El Oso, listen to it, hear how different it sounds to a lot of acts that were roaming the sterile jungles of certain American music scenes, and then zip over across the water to England or France and hear where some music was going.
The first song I fell in love with on El Oso was ''St Louise Is Listening''. It's just 'mean'. It was Mike Doughty's voice that pretty much had me enthralled with the song. Gritty, slightly nasal, but with so much character that it made the song have ''personality''. Like it needed that anyway. The groove was impeccable. I had first heard Soul Coughing with the single ''Super Bon Bon'', and it took ages to find out who that was by after first hearing it. By the time I found out, El Oso had been released. I can't remember what I had heard first from this album, but it must have been in relation to finding ''Super Bon Bon'' and the band who did it. I must have listened to another song to see what they were like, and then El Oso was on my playlist for at least 2 years. I haven't listened to it in awhile, but a few weeks ago I did hear ''I Miss The Girl'' and started getting withdrawal symptoms. El Oso is a dangerous beast, I have to say that.
It's the melodies that are absolutely baiting. ''Rolling'' just in its repetitive nature gets you to instantly recognise the song and get it rolling in your own head. Plus the beat is just ... well, can't really describe it. You just have to hear the song really. ''Monster Man'' just kicks @ss. ''Blame'' is TOO catchy. I was surprised that ''Circles'' was the song that came off of this and was more well known to many. Not my favourite pick from El Oso. It was far simpler and confined compared to its brothers, sisters and cousins that existed on this album, and a far cry from ''So Far I Have Not Found The Science''. Or ''Fully Retractable''.
It really is an album to purchase. My British friends who heard it came back to me weeks later asking me what I had given them. It worked like a virus. They couldn't get the album out of their heads. Most times, all they could manage to say was '' That album's great, how did you hear about them?''
I don't know! It took me ages to find out who did ''Super Bon Bon''.
EL OSO is worthy of purchase. A must have.
Whatever happened to..........2005-12-27
So what happened??? Something went wrong along the way. Perhaps the band members feared that their initial formula wasn't likely to lead to commercial success, or maybe they craved variety...anyways, in comparison with their debut, this album sounds flat and pallid, a weak shell of what used to be. The deep funk grooves are replaced with wannbe-electronica-styled drumming. The samples sound conventional and almost cliche. The songs are repetitive and predictable. And worst of all, gone are the unique, abstract observations of M. Doughty, replaced with repetitive non-lyrics of the worst kind. The day I bought it (used, no wonder) I returned it in a fit of disappointment. Granted, "Circles" is a decent pop song. But it's not Soul Coughing good.
Now perhaps my highly negative opinion is simply a reflection of how much I love the band's debut. Had they not set the bar so high, this may very well merit three stars. But this is Soul Coughing we are talking about. Nuff said.
Repetitive...nonsensical...genius.......2005-09-09
I'm still trying to figure out if the members of Soul Coughing are deep, philosophical geniuses or if they're just goofy geniuses. But whatever the case, they're geniuses.
"Circles" pulled me in with its craziness - and its catchiness. After the first time I heard it, I couldn't stop singing "I don't need to walk around in circles, walk around in circles, walk around in circles..." (I've often had this problem with Cake's music, too.)
El Oso isn't just "Circles," though. It's so much more. You'll find upbeat songs that will have you bouncing around the living room (be careful not to make the CD player skip), and you'll find smooth, bass-y, jazzy numbers like "Maybe I'll Come Down." Sometimes you'll find both in the same song.
There's no way I could ever single out the best song on this album. It's one of those albums that I'll listen to and say, "I love this song!" each time a new song starts. It starts with "Rolling," a great song to start an album - or a road trip - and it ends with "The Incumbent," a quiet - and almost hypnotic - fade-out.
These guys experiment with strange sounds and strange beats - and they do it almost flawlessly.
Best Soul Coughing...Utterly Amazing.......2005-05-18
Also, an FYI for those fans wanting more SC. Word on the street is that Olympus Mons Records has signed the remaining three guys, Yuval, Sebastian, and Mark, to a deal under the name Tempo Team. Go to www.olympusmonsrecords.com and write the owner an email to hurry the guy along. And check out Doughty too. His Cd's are available on this site if you don't already know.

Album Description
Three years removed from the riveting full-length debut, "Highly Refined Pirates", this highly stylized Seattle indie-pop group flaunts substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop on their second Suicide Squeeze full-length. Weaving through territories long established by '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush), '80s proto punks (Fugazi), and '90s art rock mind-f*cks (Jawbox, Joan Of Arc), Minus The Bear invoke the modern love affair between dance driven strategy and lush, Upper Pacific sweater rock. Features appearances by Judah Nagler and Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen), Michael Richardson (The New Trust), and Heather Duby.Customer Reviews:

Whether it's the catchy choruses, the subtle atmospheric elements, or pounding rhythm section that catches your ear, it's almost guaranteed that after one listen, you'll be insanely hooked on Minus The Bear. I can speak from personal experience. Hits like the opener "The Game Needed Me" and "Drilling" offer up healthy doses of melody to go along with their instant likability, and are perfect introductions for anyone not familiar with the band or their sound. Commonly described by many as a group of musical virtuosos (which is entirely true, as they're both great songwriters and musicians), Dave's guitar playing is what really defines the band's sound. Could you imagine tracks like "Pachuca Sunrise" or "Hooray" being backed by discordant power chords or zany mathematical rhythms like those of the Botch days? Didn't think so. However the same skill and technique which Dave used to compose many Botch songs, has obviously played a key factor in how he has written so many great and memorable guitar parts for this record. Add in a rhythm section that perfectly compliments his approach, as well as an electronics mastermind and an energetic, captivating front man (who can sing and write the best of them) and every piece of the puzzle comes together. This is clearly the most promising act to come out of Botch's demise.
"Menos El Eso" was absolutely one of my favorite records of last year, and it's still in healthy circulation in my listening this year. Front to back there's no filler or lacking of any kind (and without the little one minute interludes and skits of "Highly Refined Pirates", the record seems to have much more direction), and every song will be stuck in your head after one listen. If experimental, new-wave flavored indie rock sounds appealing to you, then Minus The Bear should be a top priority on your must listen list. This is one of those records that won't take long to grow on you. Highly recommended!

Album Description
Milwaukee's El Oso is not quite the lumbering bunch one would assume from their name. Taking cues from the most divergent elements of pop, El Oso weave together simple, stark melodies with a tinkling, underlying gurgle of experimentation - and Contraphonic Music Ltd. is thrilled to present you with the group's debut. The tracks were recorded in an old, spooky warehouse by Josh Kristopeit, and mixed by Kristian Riley (Decibully, The New Sense, the Promise Ring). Whichever Chapter Covers Now finely balances El Oso's singer/songwriter influences with spacious musicianship and sparkling electronic flourishes. Watch for them on the road throughout 2005!Customer Reviews:
Excellent Debut.......2005-12-14
I was quite wrong.
The album itself is excellent; it features thoughtful lyrics and good instumentation but the artful (and tasteful) sound editing (which is done by the band themselves) really pulls the music together. The haunting backgrounds on "Mt. Iceberg" and the juxtaposition of technobeats and acoustic guitar in "Tonights Now Tomorrow" really showcase the bands diverse talent.
The band itself has a psuedo-country feeling that leaves a Counting Crows or Wilco feeling with you. But they are truely unique.
From beginning to end it's an excellent album and I hope to see more of this band.
