Completists will be happy to own many of the rarities on this four-disc set, including Stevens's first demo session, an unreleased 1970 duet with Elton John, a cover of Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," and several choice live cuts from the late '70s. And it's nice to have an overview of the artist's entire career--from late '60s pop-star wannabe to '70s folk-rock superstar--in one place. But the difference between early Cat Stevens (despite composing hits for others) and post-
Tea for the Tillerman Stevens is substantial. The two follow-up LPs were part of a trilogy of brilliance--both musically and lyrically--and any Stevens collection must start there. Nevertheless, surprises and some gems are to be found throughout all four discs--even his most recent recording (as Yusuf Islam) isn't bad. This box set also offers a choice opportunity to reassess a deserving career. (All royalties go to New York City relief victims and orphans and homeless families in underdeveloped countries.)

Kicking off A&M's ambitious Cat Stevens reissue program is this 20-song introduction. The set surveys all of Stevens's stages, from the orchestrated late-1960s sides through his early-'70s peak to his more eclectic late-1970s experiments. Following the progression makes for an interesting endeavor as Stevens learns to harness his ambitious ideas with arrangements that don't obscure his rhapsodic messages. Few artists of his generation were more gifted when it came to plucking timeless melodies out of thin air, and his sumptuous voice was always able to movingly convey his bittersweet lyrics. As a career overview (including one previously unreleased cut) this set achieves its goal, hitting all of the chart successes along the way and basically defining his role as a sensitive '70s singer-songwriter, but some fans may opt for the classic early-'70s studio records, which find Stevens at his most consistently touching. --Marc Greilsamer

Why can't we just enjoy the music for what it is? Just music........2007-07-05
I really enjoyed the music on this cd and consider it one of my favorite cds. This collection needs Sad Lisa and a couple of other songs maybe. It is disturbing to see some of the reviews that focus on the political/religious side of the artist. Do you really aggree with the politics or religion of everyone you listen to?
Best of Cat Stevens.......2007-06-08
After year of harboring a foolish grudge regarding his change of religion & some untoward comments by him over the
Iranian hostages, I finally relented. This is good stuff!
The Very Best of Cat Stevens.......2007-05-14
I still remember the impact Cat Stevens' music, and especially lyrics, had on me in my college days. I still enjoy those early performances, not just for the nostalgia, but because they still have much to say and they still move me. If you have just one CD by this ageless performer, this is the one to have.
THE VERY BEST.......2007-05-12
HAD LOOK IN EVERY STORE AND NEVER COULD FINE IT.
IT,S BY FARE THE VERY BEST OF THE CAT.
THANK'S AGAIN
Take the bad with the good.......2007-05-07
This emphasizes that Cat Stevens' career didn't genrate all that much hit-worthy material. There's some really good stuff here, but only half the material is listenable. I'd have been better off just to have bought "Teaser and the Firecat".

Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-'70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman's "Wild World," "Into White," and "Longer Boats" indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best of the Brit folk-rockers, Stevens mixed melancholy with whimsy. Yes, he was prone to airy platitudes, but when he harnessed his eccentricities, as he did throughout this 1970 masterwork, you had something truly distinctive. A natural cult artist, à la Tim Buckley and Leonard Cohen, Stevens connected with record-buyers to the tune of 25 million units sold before he changed his name to Yusuf Islam, established an Islamic school, and raised a ruckus by supporting Ayatollah Khomeini's death decree against author Salman Rushdie. This remastered 2000 version of the 1970 recording, which was overseen by the artist, is a vast improvement over the earlier CD reissue. --Steve Stolder

Tea For Cat.......2007-07-04
This is such a great album.
Mona Bone Jakon, Tea For The Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat are all perfect LP's, just get them all. You can't go wrong with Cat Stevens!
Where Do the Children Play is my favorite Cat song
Wild World is probably his most listenable song
Miles From Nowhere, Longer Boats, and On The Road to Findout are some of his best as well
I think this is one of the coolest albums to be a fan of, everyone should give it a chance
Cat Stevens at his best.......2007-07-03
If I had to choose one of Cat Stevens' albums, this would be it. I prefer the mostly acoustic, piano and percussion emphasis in this one. Whereas some of his later musical ventures lacked the depth of character and sound space that these songs provided to listeners. I first hear Cat Steven's voice as the soundtrack to the film Harold and Maude - one of my all-time favorites. Once I heard his voice, I was hooked. I looked for a soundtrack, but at the time it was not available,. Now I think there is one out. The songs from that film are still my favorite of his works. Amongst them, Wild World stands out. My favorite songs from Harold and Maudeare If you want to Sing Out, Sing Out, and Trouble, which can now be found on the soundtrack to the film. Does anyone know where to get a copy of the soundtrack these days? If not, pick up Tea for the Tillerman and one of his greatest hits CDs.
cold tea, needs sugar.......2007-05-14
When compared to the original vinyl version, this CD is disappointing. I have come to realize that the claim "re-mastered" is not an indication of quality. I own several original master recordings of several artists that are truly spectacular. But, the quality standard is specific to the organization that produced the work. Apparently, re-mastered and original masters are not the same. Live and learn.
A Fav!.......2007-04-01
I just saw HAROLD AND MAUDE again this week (ie: the movie) and remembered how much I had loved TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN.
I had owned this as a vinyl album many yrs ago, and had played it all the time.So of course after seeing the movie, I just had to re-order this album in CD format.
No disappointments here. It's as good as ever.
I ordered this album as a Re-mastered CD version and it sounded GREAT! Worth the extra few dollars!
Revenge of the Persians!.......2007-03-21
First off.. I spent years trying to hate Cat Stevens for becoming a radical Muslim...that's becoming a "radical" Muslim people..He was already a Muslim. I mean advocating the death of a writer (Simon Ruski) for a perceived insult, that must make him an enemy of the U.S right? I grumbled and mumbled doesn't that bastard realize he's a writer too! I put away his records (that's a large round disc of poly-vinyl used in ancient times to reproduce music) and refused to listen to him...then a funny thing happened...I started hearing litle bits and pieces of his music here and there like the outtro on Extras... then I noticed on Amazon that they had remastered his catalog...hmm... interesting... one listen and hooked again. I think this was his sophomore effort and if you only buy one of his albums buy this one, I don't think you can get the spirit of the man or the time's from a "best of" disc. The pleading timbre in his voice and baritone delivery when others of that era were doing the falsetto...genius...Where do the children play , Wild World , Sad Lisa , Miles from Nowhere..These are "thinking mans" lyrics somewhat dark and introspective...does anybody get it stuff! The remastering is perfect ,acoustic guitars are separated in the sound stream from each other just enough , the keyboards move in and out from supporting to lead roles ,the percussion and occasional brass or orchestra instrumentation seem to put the Cat squarely in the middle of the soundstage..Very nice! Buy this disc..You probably won't be supporting terrorist if you do..Just damn good music!!

The third album Cat Stevens put out in a 15-month burst that began in the summer of 1970 with Mona Bone Jakon, Teaser and the Firecat is where the enigmatic folk-pop idol crested commercially, if not artistically. Its immediate predecessor, Tea for the Tillerman, possesses an air of mystery and unforced whimsy that proved impossible for Stevens to replicate. That said, the singer-songwriter had it in him to pull together a captivating collection that boasted two of the biggest hits of his meteoric, if self-inhibited, career--"Peace Train" and the sublime hymn "Morning Has Broken." "The Wind," "If I Laugh," and "Moonshadow" are every bit as tuneful and appealing as the hits, while "Rubylove," "How Can I Tell You," and "Bitterblue" would be standouts on Stevens's less accomplished later albums. In fact, only the bellicose social statements "Changes IV" and "Tuesday's Dead" ring hollow. --Steven Stolder

thanks Yusuf/Cat Stevens for coming back for us!.......2007-01-13
Recently I purchased Yusuf's new CD and after listening to this, I needed to purchase the CD versions of Cat Stevens' Teaser and the Firecat plus Tea for the Tillerman. I had the albums from 70s and just had to have the CDs now. People are quite happy that Yusuf/Cat Stevens decided to come back into the music business. Such an extraordinary voice that we have missed for 20+ years. I cannot thank Yusuf/Cat Stevens enough for once again sharing his talen with the world. Everybody should own one of his CDs if not more.
Wonderful Music, Wonderful Memories.......2007-01-05
The music of Cat Stevens inspired my college days and I find his compositions still inspirational today. Songs of love, loss and spirituality are sung with emotion and the unique, sensual, voice of this British singer/songwriter.
His Best Album.......2006-11-16
Tea For the Tillerman gets all the hype, but I think this album is stronger song for song. It is a masterpiece and I highly recommend it.
Here is a song by song breakdown:
1) The Wind - 9/10
It is short, simple and beautiful. It is inspiring and uplifting to hear
2) RubyLove - 8/10
This is a very catchy love song.
3) If I Laugh - 8.5/10
A very sad song, but we can all identify with tthe pain of losing someone you love. Beautiful guitar work on this
4) Changes IV - 8.5/10
This song is very upbeat and has a very positive message of hope. It is very strong lyrically and musically.
5)How Can I Tell You - 8/10
It is a bit repetitive and I feel a bit long, but still a pleasant love song
6) Tuesday's Dead - 8/10
This song is strong, upbeat and a bit off the wall, but it is still quite good.
7) Morning Has Broken - 9/10
Cat Stevens reworks an old hymn and turns it into a beautiful version. He didn't write the words, but the music he did is breathtaking.
8) Bitterblue - 6.5/10
I really don't care for this song. It comes off sounding harsh & not very enjoyable to listen to.
9) Moonshadow - 10/10
This is a classic song. It is perfection
10) Peace Train - 10/10
After Father & Son, I rate this as Cat's 2nd best song. It is up there with Lennon's Imagine. The production is top notch and so is the arrangement of it. Perfect
Get this album. I rarely like 90% of an album. This is a masterpiece.

Before Cat Stevens changed his name to Yusef Islam, he had a slew of hits built around his soft, yet sometimes coarse, vocals. Stevens utilized a variety of instrumentation and rhythms in his predominantly acoustic arrangements, and songs like "Peace Train," and "Another Saturday Night" had a multi-cultural feel to them. Greatest Hits provides a decent overview of his more popular work, including the poignant "Oh Very Young" and "Father & Son." Unfortunately, the delightful yet brief "Tea for the Tillerman" is not present. The lovely "Morning Has Broken" has elements of Stevens's growing concern with religion, philosophy, and the relationship between the cerebral and the spiritual. In the early 1980s, Stevens, now Yusef, "retired" from the music profession because of his new beliefs. --Steve Gdula
Customer Reviews:
Cat lovers.......2007-06-08
If you are a Cat Stevens fan you will love this old CD. Shows a nice range of songs and styles.
Genuinely his greatest hits...........2007-05-18
Unlike many other albums using the often over-used 'Greatest Hits' tag, this offering from Cat Stevens genuinely manages to live up to its title, without the usual mixing in of weaker material. Stevens is perhaps one of the most interesting singer songwriters of our time, and this collection neatly encapsulates his mid-term pre Yusef Islam recording career. The slightly rawer sounding 1960s hits are deleted from the playlist and we're left with a very consistently good acoustic, gentle sound. One feels like Stevens writes directly from his soul and bares all of it through his music: politically, spiritually and philosophically. Not available on any other collection and released as a single from this album, 'Two Fine People' is one of the strongest tracks, with very light use of synthesizers, giving a more modern contrast to the rest of the music. The cover art is also very beautiful too - I adore the flag motif.
THE VERY BEST OF CAT STEVENS !!!.......2007-05-13
IF YOU ARE A FAN OF CAT STEVENS--THIS IS A MUST FOR YOUR CD COLLECTION !!!
ALL THE GREATEST HITS !!!
great compilation.......2007-03-03
While there are several options available if you're looking for a CD with a good collection of Cat Stevens songs, this one may be the best bargain. In fairness though, Cat Stevens Gold, and The Very Best of Cat Stevens do give you a lot more songs for not a whole lot more money. Others have mentioned a track on this CD that is not present on other compilations, which is great. For someone like me though, who is just looking for a good sampling of some of the Cat Steven's songs I know best, the clencher is that Cat Stevens Greatest Hits is a solid collection at an excellent price.
The power of Cat .......2007-02-19
Cat Stevens will never be forgotten. He sang so beautifully and employed the guitar so well in the arrangements of his songs that just one listen to his music thrills you. This CD makes you crave more of his fine artistry; his voice on this CD is strong, masculine yet sensitive and passionate.
The CD opens with a very popular song which will forever be associated with Cat Stevens entitled "Wild World." The lyrics show just how much Cat mourns the loss of his woman and the guitar changes chords at all the right moments in order to enhance the melancholy feel of this ballad. The overall effect strikes you with its beauty and beckons you instantly to listen to the rest of the CD.
"Can't Keep It In" allows Cat the opportunity to explore the topic of feeling a love for someone who can't quite relax in order to experience her true love for him. The musical arrangement stays strong with the band and a chorus in the background. Excellent!
"Hard Headed Woman" possesses great strength as well; Cat sings of his desire to find his one true love. His voice is passionate and the arrangement for the guitar moves me deeply.
Other beautiful songs on this CD include Cat's declaration of true love for his woman in "Two Fine People;" "Peace Train" with a rock feel that also sounds vaguely like a country ballad and "Father & Son" which deals with the predictable but honest disagreements between a father and son about how best to live life.
The CD ends with two memorable ballads. "Morning Has Broken" features lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon and Cat's musical arrangement leaves nothing to be desired. The piano and the guitar sound wonderful; and the choir in the background bolsters the song even further. "Another Saturday Night," written by Sam Cooke, closes the album on a playful note even if Cat feels frustrated that he cannot find a woman to have fun with now that he "just got paid."
The liner notes include the lyrics and some of the album credits are there, too. The CD artwork shines and reflects a great deal of forethought.
Cat Stevens is still one of the few artists who could turn out songs that appealed to very broad audiences. His melodies strike you instantly as being infectiously catchy and very admirable. If you like this CD I recommend other CDs by Cat Stevens including Tea For The Tillerman and Footsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. Fans of classic rock and pop will also enjoy this CD.

Celebrated and adored for his sanguine lyrics and irresistible hooks, Cat Stevens was one of the rare singer-songwriters capable of composing genuinely optimistic songs that didn't leave a sappy residue in listeners' ears. However, even a cursory listen to 1972's Catch Bull at Four proves that the Cat had seen darkness, too, and that those darker elements had become more pronounced than they'd been in the past. His vocal style shifts from the cool croon that made Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat top sellers to a harsher, almost growling delivery. The album's standouts--the wistful reverie "Sitting" and the delightfully infectious "Can't Keep It In"--are resolute in lyric and melody. Rambling, mystical odes such as "The Boy with a Moon & Star on His Head," "Angelsea," and "Sweet Scarlet" offer quaintly romantic imagery and lavishly undulating melodies. But it's the mercurial dynamics and driving melody of "18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare)" and the bitter conviction of "Ruins" that give the album a backbone and a sense of balance. --Sally Weinbach

Cat's Early Seventies' Transition.......2005-01-28
Cat Stevens' fourth album for A&M records is a definite treat. The first Cat Stevens LP to feature a promotional label: (2 different labels on one record), and I believe the first of those 4 albums to feature electrical instruments. This album contains the top 20 hit "Sitting" as well as the acoustic masterpiece "Boy with a moon and star on his head". Cat's first big rocker was "Freezing Steel" from side 2. Also included are "Angelsea" and "Silent Sunlight" which i think are the best ones on the album. The remastered CD has brilliant sound, just like the LP right out of the shrink wrap. If you are just discovering the sound of Cat Stevens, "Catch Bull At Four" is an excellent first choice. The musical energy will fill you up.
Undoubtedly one of the Cat's classic albums.......2004-10-23
It is unfortunate that many reviewers of `Catch bull at four' have tended to regard it as a poorer quality album than its two predecessors `Tea for the tillerman' and `Teaser and the Firecat'. I feel that this does the album a great injustice; no artist should be expected to remain unchanging in style, and if he had simply stayed with a winning formula after the success of `Teaser' Cat Stevens could rightly have been criticized. However, Stevens demonstrated integrity and vision throughout the early years of the 1970s, with each of his first five Island Records albums showing a clear progression and artistic development, even if on occasions (perhaps most notably `Foreigner') this was not always commercially successful.
After achieving a very focused and concise style on `Teaser', Cat Stevens understandably wanted to experiment with more unusual song structures and ambitious arrangements, and the result is a somewhat more stylistically diverse album than its predecessors. As a result it is, if anything, a stronger, more musically satisfying album, and includes new elements such as electric guitar, synthesizer, female backing vocalists and the accomplished keyboard work of Jean Roussel. At the same time, the album retains much of what made Cat's earlier work appealing, and also includes the welcome re-appearance of the bouzouki to add its distinctive sound to `O Caritas'.
The mood of the album is at times somber, reflecting Stevens' continuing spiritual pilgrimage at this time, and his deep feelings perhaps show through most in the opening track `Sitting' and the bleak closing song `Ruins'. Though there are a couple of weaker tracks (such as `Boy...' which has a pleasant arrangements but a rather tedious, over-long lyric, and `Angelsea' which is perhaps too dominated by synthesizer sounds), these can be appreciated as valid musical experiments, and are more than compensated for by other very appealing up-tempo tracks (such as `Sitting', `Can't keep it in' and `O Caritas'). The album contains several lovely ballads, such as `Sweet scarlet' and the madrigal-like `Silent sunlight', whilst the more complex song structure of `18th avenue', with its orchestral interlude and changing rhythms, hints at the direction Cat would take with his next album `Foreigner'. The whole package is enhanced by the crystal clear remastering, and restoration of the stylish original album artwork. Altogether, `Catch bull at four' can be regarded as a very satisfying album which, along with `Tillerman' and `Teaser' ranks among Cat Stevens' best work.
Like all of Cat Stevens' albums - about 2/3 superb .......2004-09-25
This seems to be a trend and applies to at least his first six A&M releases, except FOREIGNER, which was maybe 1/3 superb. Although "Silent Sunlight" and "Sweet Scarlet" are two of the most beautiful songs Cat Stevens ever recorded, I would recommend CATCH BULL AT FOUR on the strength of "18th Avenue" alone. That song is his studio masterpiece, in my opinion. And listen to the chanted chorus in "Angelsea". Supposedly the voices repeatedly chant "Oh, Carly Simon says, oh, Carly, why?". After all, she did have a romance with Cat Stevens shortly before meeting James Taylor. Could Cat Stevens be the subject of "You're So Vain"? Nahhh. The #1 candidate for that dubious honor is still Warren Beatty. Anyway, buy CATCH BULL.

Mona Bone Jakon marked the beginning of the Cat Stevens we know and love, forming alongside Teaser & the Firecat and Tea for the Tillerman the creative heart of Stevens's oeuvre. Though previous releases showcased his sticky burr of a voice and flashes of his songwriting brilliance, it was on Mona Bone that Stevens became disillusioned enough with the music industry to write more deeply introspective and personal songs. It's interesting to note that his disavowal of the biz (wryly commented upon in the song "Pop Star") coincides with his increasing popularity. You can hear Stevens finding his distinctive voice and sound on the first few bars of "Lady D'Arbanville" in all its baroque, emotive glory. "I Think I See the Light" marks the beginning of Stevens's lyrical spiritual pursuits, and "Trouble" stands among the best tracks in his career. All in all, Mona Bone Jakon is a delight, and because it never achieved the Top 40 radio ubiquity of later albums, it sounds fresh and distinct. --Tod Nelson
Customer Reviews:
Essential Cat.......2007-07-19
I view this album as the first third to the amazing three part masterpiece that is MBJ/TFTT/TATF. I was already very familiar with Teaser and the Firecat from when I was young and partially familiar with Tea for the Tillerman from "best of" collections I've heard but it wasn't until a few months ago that I actually got the Mona Bone Jakon album. There's a lot of good stuff on here and I would say it's on par with the other two albums. It's really hard for me to pick a favorite out of the three. The only song I find kind of mediocre is Lady D'Arbanville. Not sure why but it just doesn't do anything for me. So the album for me starts with Maybe You're Right, which might be my favorite of the album. I can't explain what about the song I like so much; I just think it has a great tune. Next comes the catchy Pop Star, which is kinda repetitive but I still like it. I Think I See the Light just plain rocks; I love the piano in it. Trouble is the only song I'd heard before buying the album. It's a classic with a very nice, slow and easy tune. Mona Bone Jakon is almost there with Lady D'Arbanville as a throw-away track for me but it's pretty short and there's something kinda interesting about it so I usually don't skip it. I Wish, I Wish is a catchy song with an interesting beat that seems to keep building up; I really like it. Katmandu has a nice flow and descriptive lyrics that really reminds me of camping. Peter Gabriel plays the flute in this song. Time is a really short song which really is just the intro to Fill My Eyes, which is a very pretty song--one of my favorites. And the album ends with Lilywhite, a nice slow song that has some beautiful violin playing in it. Also, I noticed at the 2:10 mark of this song he starts strumming the chords to Don't Be Shy, a song he did for the movie Harold & Maude. Anyway, that's my opinion of this album: one of his best and seemingly most overlooked.
Well Done.......2007-04-15
This cd's got a couple of songs from the movie "Harold and Maude", which I understand can be found on no other album.
Its Poetry.......2006-10-07
Cat Stevens is a poet, and this is . . . great poetry. Its tender, angry, sublime, reaching, and even transcendent.
He's part angry young man, and all Seeker of Life's Meaning. These are the songs of a profound human being; take it when you find it, its rare, cheap imitations abound; this is the real thing.
This album is the kind of music I would like my son and daughter to grow up with, alongside the literature of Hermann Hesse, Somerset Maugham, and James Hilton.
nostalgia.......2006-03-12
When you are addicted to 'must have' old cd's this is one that shoul be in your collection !
Light As A Feather.......2005-07-08
When Cat Stevens got out of hospital (as the Brits say) in 1970, he had a catalog of songs that would stretch over 2 years and 3 albums. So why, I wondered, didn't he put all the best stuff on the first record? After all, most people would say Tea For the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat contained most of the Stevens classics. Then it occurred to me that a lot of this music had already appeared in the movie Harold and Maude, so there may have been an attempt to tie it in with the movie release. THEN it occurred to me that this isn't really inferior stuff, even though sometimes you don't notice its brilliance the way you should. The great songs here are Trouble, I Think I See The Light, Katmandu and maybe Pop Star. The others are very good. All the songs have a weightlessness to them that might cause you to overlook the worthiness of the album on the whole. So in a way, the whole is not as good as the sum of its parts. But it's definitely worth checking out.

Customer Reviews:
Just a great, album.......2007-07-09
had gotten this album on cassette from a friend years ago. Listened until the tape wore out. Finally figured out which record it was and just purchased it. Wow, it still sounds as good as the first time I heard it. What a great collection of songs!
Its not the hits that are on the first greatest hits, but I think they are better songs actually.
One of Cat Stevens most Listenable cds.......2007-07-04
The first time I heard Cat Stevens, I knew I had found music for me. I was listening to his early work - 1970 - 1972, the Harold and Maude years. Something about the way his voice melds with his guitar and the meditative qualities of the performances made me connect to my own spirit. It is much like the way I felt the first time I heard the music of Alexi Murdoch on his album Four Songs and later when I first heard Alexi's song "Breathe" fromTime Without Consequence. I still get a similar feeling listening to this Cat Stevens cd today.
I rate this cd 5 stars because it has my two favorite Cat Stevens tunes, "If you Want to Sing Out, Sing Out", and "Trouble" as well as several others on the top of my list of favorites. This whole cd is highly listenable. It only has really good songs on it with that rich meditative quality that first attracted me to his music. If you want a collection of Cat Steven's work, this is the one I recommend most highly. For one of his original albums, I recommend Tea for the Tillerman. The only thing that could beat these two would be the soundtrack to the film Harold and Maude.
After the long hiatus since his days performing as Cat Stevens, I am glad to see that Yusuf Islam has come back to his guitar. I heard a story that he realized that it was Muslims who introduced the West to Guitar and thus reembraced his instrument. For those of you who thought he was forever lost to us, check out his new cd as Yusuf Islam, "An Other Cup" and I think you will find yourself reconnected to where he left off.
loved it.......2007-04-01
Different Cat work; Never the less, it is greatto play it and relax to it.
The U.S. Release of Harold & Maude Motion Picture Soundtrack.......2007-03-05
FINALLY, fans of the film Harold and Maude can have all the songs!
The actual original soundtrack recording from the film was only released
in Japan (go figure) and do you think we can get a copy of it here in the
U.S.????
Harold and Maude fans, Cat Stevens fans, this is as good as it gets for
us in the U.S. A Harold and Maude Soundtrack w/ a few extra tracks thrown
in for good measure. Wigwam was released in the U.S. as a single at the
time the CD was released...they'd have been better off and more successful
releasing one of the lesser known tracks from Harold and Maude.
Like rediscovering an old friend.......2005-12-27
Envision, for a second, if you will, finding your high school yearbook somewhere completely unexpected. You open it up, assuming you'll find the old familiar faces, only to discover the black & whites are now full color audio and video. The sounds are so fresh, each note is so clear, each syllable so precise, you begin to wonder whether you'd ever heard these songs to their fullest extent.
I know no selection will ever be complete. That's inevitable, natural, and expectable: that's precisely why they're called selections. But each of the tracks -from "Katmandu" to "Daytime", even the self-deprecating "(I never wanted) To be a star", and the classic "Father and Son"- shares a renewed vitality, an unexpected spark, an intimacy that makes you wonder what it was you'd been listening to all these years.
For the absolutist and obsesive collector (i.e. those who've got to have ALL the recording and versions of their favorite artists), "Footsteps" may be a little overkill.
But for the rest of us, who enjoy a good afternoon with Cat -and that have earned out way to a more than decent sound equipment not to be shared or touched by anybody else- this is an album worth re-purchasing, if only for the joy of hearing Cat Stevens they way it was meant to be heard.
And I can assure you, without a doubt, that you'll be singing along, at the top of your lungs, before you even realize it. If that's not what a reissue is for, then I've been buying them under the wrong pretences.

If veteran Cat Stevens fans were nervous in the wake of the previous album's (Foreigner) sometimes sketchy experimentalism, they must surely have been gratified by the singer-songwriter's return to form here. Reuniting with producer Paul Samwell-Smith, this 1974 collection kicks off with the bracing "Music" and never looks back, managing to be both more adventurous and focused than its predecessor. Though perhaps belied by the preciousness of the hit "Oh, Very Young," there's a muscular determination to songs like "Sun/C79" and "Ready" that serves Stevens well. Lyrically, tracks like "Jesus," "King of Trees," and "Home in the Sky" give early hints of Stevens's spiritual quest, though delivered through Samwell-Smith's eclectic, if still pop-focused production. Even to jaded ears, the album still sounds fresh in 2000 and may well sound like Cat Stevens's best work. --Jerry McCulley

Easy Listening to Cat Stevens.......2007-07-08
The CD was very good from a 70's song writer that has been away too long. It brought back good memories of the time. This icon in the music industry had such an impression on the years prior to now.
Buddha and the Chocolate Box.......2007-02-14
Buddha and the Chocolate Box has always been my favorite Cat Stevens album. I was delighted to find it on CD. The delivery date was faster than promised.
If you know Cat Stevens...........2007-01-10
His search has ended. If you have listened to Cat Stevens and realized his quest, this cd is the holy grail. He is so peaceful and energized. He emminates it thru his voice....
Good Album.......2003-12-03
Sorry to keep up the Argy Bargy, but now we aren't allowed to dislike a song for it's lyrics. I find the lyrics of "Home in the sky" suicidal-inducing. "Come the morning I'll be far from here, Happy, rising in another sphere, old world goodbye 'cause I'll be Home in the sky in the morning, Bye Bye" I guess it could be seen as not fearing death but the lines "all the bad times have passed" indicate the person in the song wasn't joyful about Earthlife. Then again, maybe soemone he knew took their life and this is his recounting of it. That said, "Home in the Sky" is one of Cat's Greatest musical accomplishments, with a breathtaking vocal intro, an amazing organ sound signifying death, and the music is really beyond description except I could say it really sound like it's "Happy rising, in another sphere" And Buddha is one of Cat's most beautiful albums, go and get it if you don't have it.
Yum Chocolate Box !!.......2003-09-29
This is a great album. I think it's a transition between Foreigner and the upcoming albums. Awesome songs such as "A Bad Penny", "Home in the sky" & "King of trees", which are the best tracks in the album. Then the well-known "Oh Very Young", beautiful. "Sun/C79" & "Jesus", great tracks. The songs here are more elaborated and more produced. It's Cat with a band. He keeps moving forward experimenting since Catch Bull at Four.
... tnahpelle from Australia likes this album which is great, but mentions that doesn't like "Home in the sky" 'cos of being a depressing tune :-S well, depressing or not, MUSIC transmites feelings, which are not always HAPPY ones. So learn to accept a person's feelings, good or bad, happy or sad. If you are only looking for fun, go to the circus instead of listen to music. So I guess you are the kind of person that walks away from people when having a hard time ;-)

(Most Of) The Best Of Cat.......2006-07-17
The main thing that strikes me about Cat Stevens (or Yusuf Islam as he calls himself now) is that, during his Cat Stevens phase from 1966 to 1978, he made really, really *nice* music. The melodies, the words, and of course, the man's distinctive voice and guitar-picking....just really good, spiritual, uplifting songs. He is an incredibly talented troubadour, and this 2-CD set,"Gold," collects a healthy dose of classic Cat Stevens music. Although, as other reviewers have pointed out, "Gold" is a bit incomplete, most of the big hit songs are here, such as "Matthew And Son," "Morning Has Broken," "Wild World," "Moonshadow," etc., but "Gold" also features tracks from Stevens' later albums that aren't as well known. These songs are just as wonderful as the hits, including "Angelsea," "Last Love Song," and the very impressive, 18-minute "Foreigner Suite." And, for the grand finale, "Gold" features the brand-new song, "Indian Ocean," which Stevens/Islam recorded for charity. It is a *beautiful* song, and worth the price of admission alone. There are several Cat Stevens compilations already on the market, but "Gold" is an excellent one, and a great introduction to the magical music of Cat Stevens.
Cat Stevens and The Incomplete "Best Of" compilations.......2005-12-26
Cat Stevens is a wonderful person and a sublime songwriter. Neverthless, none of the several compilations released since 1975 onwards stand out as definitive or ultimate. Even the 4 CD-Box Set released a few years ago missed some essential tunes!.

Customer Reviews:
I haven't found a better one.......2006-05-26
An exceptionally well-sequenced collection. I usually don't like BEST OF discs that scramble chronology, but the people who put this together did a great job; the different styles of production keep this interesting all the way through. In this context, I can even appreciate his poppy early work. Excellent sound. And it's got most of the songs from "Harold and Maude"! Ignore the cover and GET THIS (used).
GREAT COLLECTION.......2003-05-08
For the die-hard Cat Stevens fan who wants to hear the 'very best of Cat Stevens' I'd say buy every CD he made. For the peripherally interested, this is the album to get, in my opinion. Not only does it contain a large portion of his most favoured period [Tillerman/Teaser] but it also contains a bit from all his periods. This is Cat Stevens in a nutshell. It includes at least one song from every album. My favourites are Moonshadow, Land of freelove adn goodbye and Into white.
Practically Perfect.......2002-03-19
This CD has all of the tracks that you'll ever need, TERRIFIC sound quality, and even a cover that depicts how beautiful, spiritual and dreamy the music is (though listening to the music is still better than looking at some kid doing Yoga). Opt for the import -- it's worth it!
A true classic.......2000-11-22
Cat Stevens is another artist I grew up as a teenager. His music speaks to the human soul. I almost forgotten about his contribution "If you want to sing out, sing out" to the film classic "Harold and Maude". It was like reacquainting myself with an old friend. Songs like "Father and Song" and "Morning Has Broken" moves me in a way no other artist can. I consider his version of "Another Saturday Night" far superior to the original by Al Green. Obviously this collection of Cat Stevens songs has four extra tracks that his greatest hits cd doesn't have. For anyone interested in buying a compilation of Cat Stevens songs, this ultimate collection is the way to go.
Songs with feelings.......2000-04-28
For those who don't know his work, this is a great CD with all his major hits, a Collection of songs that reveal all sorts of emotions, from happiness to sorrow. For those who do know his work, this is just another CD with his most famous titles. I already knew his work, but i liked it.
