Two centuries after their upstart American colonies showed them the door, the British returned--first to rescue American pop music from the cuddly clutches of manufactured mannequins who'd squandered the promise of Elvis, and then to dominate it well into the '70s and '80s. The irony of this triple-disc, 54-track anthology is that the Beatles, who spearheaded the charge, are barely represented (except for a spate of successful Lennon-McCartney covers, including several the Fabs never recorded), and their shaggier, bluesier rivals the Stones are completely absent. That said, the remaining tracks do a fine job chronicling the Brits' savvy, loving assimilation (and revitalization) of virtually the entire spectrum of American pop music, from Tin Pan Alley and Dylanesque folk to swinging saloon singers and bracing proto-punk. It slightly shortchanges the blues-rock and psychedelia that would become the dominant forces of '70s rock, but generously offers some more obscure chart gems in their place. A solid digital remastering has also worked wonders on many of the tracks. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Fun Old Favorites.......2007-07-23

The first disc was full of songs I could still sing along with and remember and enjoy, being a teen during that time. The second disc had songs that (with the exception of a couple), I don't believe were any kind of big hits during that time period. Didn't even know a couple. The collection was a good one though. I listen to it a lot, and it takes me back.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you remember ..........2007-03-25

... and maybe a few things that you don't. Definitely inspires multiple listenings.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection for British Invasion Fans!.......2006-12-29

I have been a fan of British music (rock, pop etc.) since the 1960s, and I was blown away by this collection. Other then a few obscure numbers that even this former British rock groupie does not recall, the songs had me singing along from the first track.

The audio is of excellent quality, and the selection ranges from rock, ballads and even a few folk numbers. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of five is that I felt that it included a bit too many folk recordings, but that of course speaks more of my taste in music then what is included here.

Both my husband and myself were singing along to these songs while driving quite a ways to a family Christmas Eve dinner, and it made the trip fly by. Ditto for the drive home. I have to say that this wonderful set made the journey much more bearable and entertaining to boot.

British Invasion is guaranteed to take you back down memory lane, so be sure you are prepared for the journey. Memories of NYC, the Warwick Hotel and the Who came flooding back....sigh. Buy it and relive a time of great music, trend setting clothing and having fun in a more innocent and less depressing age.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Overview Of The British Invasion.......2005-11-01

British Invasion: 1963-1967 presents some of the groups other than the Beatles, Stones and Dave Clark 5 who hit the charts back in the day.
Most of the tunes included were certified hits in the USA but there are a couple of obscure tunes and then there is the questionable inclusion of Englebert Humperdinck.
The accompanying booklet is a bit light on information about the bands.
Nevertheless, this is a great set - all the tunes are the original versions and the sound quality is fine.

4 out of 5 stars A good essential collection for fans of Brit Rock.......2005-10-28

Although not having as many of my personal favourites as the original import version, which is now unavailable, I think this collection is the best one currently on the market. Having a good selection of songs, instrumental styles, and artists, it could be considered one collection essential to fans of the early British Rock Invasion. Not only have the editors included many classic standards but also some works lesser known to this country that deserve equal acclaim.
Overall, I'm glad to have it as part of my rock collection!
