Nevermind that Alanis Morissette's career spans back to her early teens and she has four prior CDs to her credit. It's just too early to go unplugged. Performances like this are better done in the privacy of one's acoustically appointed bathroom. An expressive, emotionally naked singer, Morissette bares a little too much on this outing. Recorded at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music and produced solely by Morissette, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the carefully wrought songs and slices of her inner life, but there's little to be said about her shrill, thin delivery. Included is the never-before-released "No Pressure Over Cappuccino," which she debuted on her Jagged Little Pill tour, and two songs left off last year's Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie: "Princes Familiar" and "These Are the Thoughts." They were dumped for good reason. The only redeeming moment is her out-of-breath rendering of the coy "Head Over Feet." --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Alanis!.......2007-06-08

This is an amazing collection of rarely heard tunes, done in an MTV setting, simple and mostly acoustic. I would strongly recommend this CD for even the most timid Alanis fan, but it has universal appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-03-05

This is a solid release by Alanis that showcases her talent and is a pleasure to listen to. Her cover of King of Pain is a real treat too!

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to the Collection.......2006-06-03

I bought this upon release, have played it a lot. It's not my favourite ALanis album, but I like Alanis' music a lot, and I must say that this live album is very nice indeed. The live versions of Head Over Feet, You Learn, I Was Hoping and That I Would Be Good are a joy for the ear, and especially You Oughta Know is wonderful on this album. As for the new songs, I especially enjoy Princess Familiar. The only two songs I do not enjoy as much here are Ironic and Uninvited. I love the originals, but the live versions lack "something". But in all, a great purchase, and a nice addition to her best of CD The Collection!

5 out of 5 stars Unplugged But Strong.......2004-10-24

That's not my first review about this album.
I don't use to listen to others' opinions so much, but I really do listen to this album, and it's important. People use to say many idiot things about their unfavorite songs, songwriters and singers, but I have seen so many mistakes about this album.
The first one says that she wanted to cash in with this, only. He is wrong. She cashed but if it was her real wish, she would have done this with other kind of music. She could have released an album like Under Rug Swept (the next after this) as soon as possible. Unplugged albums are important projects for the modern pop/rock music, but it's so far from being a secure way of getting money. So many albums from so many famous artists have not been aclaimed albums. So many good songs don't sound well in an Unplugged Versions, everyone knows it.
Other detail: in general, who chooses the artist to go unplugged and decides if it's a good project or it is going to fail is MTV Networks. Artists don't use to "order" an MTV Unplugged in their carreers. And about Alanis, so many little time of carrer, so much sucesses and singles that could figure in this album...
Other things I have seen as wrong are about how some people talk about the songs and make comments that are deeply mistaken. One, specially, talks about No Pressure Over Cappucino as a new song. It is one of the oldest ones from this album! It's the first time Maverick releases it but it's far from being a new song.
I have been listening continuingly this album since 1999. This is a project that has gone right, not wrong. I listen to Alanis Unplugged's songs on the radio (I live in the middle of Brazil) until today, and You Learn and That I Would Be Good (tracks #1 and #4) are big hits, concurring with hits of the moment in popular preferences.
(Unauthorized) Computer stores used to sell computers with this album (song files of it), I bought one copy of it some time. This kind of wrong thing just happens with successes. If this album weren't a successful one, people wouldn't want to make copies of it. This is completely obvious.
And nowadays, so much sucess, not oblivion. Her sucessful albums after it is an important clue to get this argumentation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-09-11

As a 40-something man, I didn't expect to like this CD this much. What an original singer. Alanis has her own style and nobody can come close to copying it. She is brilliant, and I'm sure her searching lyrics speak to the hearts of millions. Some language may be offensive, she doesn't hold back on bluntness and direct messages.
