In a remarkable career spanning six decades, singer-songwriter Paul Simon has amassed 9 Grammy awards and has been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. The first occasion recognized has brilliant work as one half of Simon & Garfunkel. Simon's second induction, in 2001, heralded his equally massive contributions as a solo artist and composer. The songwriter's solo catalog is one of the most diverse, literate, adventurous, and musically rich in all of popular music. Today regarded as one of the greatest composers of the rock n' roll era, Simon is an American treasure, now celebrated by these five expanded and remastered classic albums.

The Best Album in a Lifetime .......2007-07-19
Maybe its unfair to judge any of his work against the standard of this album, The Rhythm of the Saints. Maybe its unfair to set ANY album, by anyone, against it in comparison.
I've had this album since it first came out in 1990. I bought it on vinyl then and just bought it again on CD. As familiar as it is to me, after 17 years of listening to it, it does not stale. His words build up a structure for whatever meaning you need to impart to them - and the structure resolves them into a whole. Every time I listen I learn something new. He offers an ageless sympathy to his listeners, speaking with a voice of aeons of struggling souls is songs such as "Further to Fly" and "Spirit Voices" - but unlike most music and poetry of the day, reflecting on the pain leaves you with a wellspring of hope.
When Paul Simon goes to a new place, South Africa for Graceland, or South America for The Rhythm of the Saints, he becomes like an electrical conductor. He is able to drop all the specific angst of his own life (unlike in his most recent album, in which we are forced to sympathise with his doing 500 sit ups a day, and dying his hair the colour of mud)and he channels the deepest, most timeless, most inherent and meaningful reaches of the human experience.
I don't mean to critisize his new work - the poor man has a right to settle down, be a father, a husband, a man. But when he steps out of himself, as he has in this album, he steps into the most resounding depths of the ocean of humanity - (I know it sounds like I'm going overboard - but I promise, I give the man nothing he doesn't deserve. I do not pretend that he is very good to watch in concert, that thing he does with his arm drives me crazy, and I suspect it is only with the greatest of technical assistance that he can keep his pitch - he is often inclined to stray quite off-tume, and his meandering vocalisations in concert make me tired.)
Listening to this album reminds me, at least, of being a part of a greater community - a moment in time, a beating heart in a great chorus of painful, hopeful, joyous rhythms - soaring with the rhythms of the saints.

A subversive album.......2007-05-22
What about the lyrics, though? Is it just me, or is he making a mockery of himself and his insular life, like Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise?" Simon contemplates the meaning of life as a rich, white man with all his rich, white friends. He also brings in the exotic Brazilian and African influences to see how they play against that.
Had a lot of fun, had a lot of money / had a little son, thought we'd call im Sonny. He is laying a thick layer of mockery on his own peers, calling them idiots who treat the miracle of life as just another product. Spend those Eurodollars from Washington to Tokyo? More of the same.
Simon tells secrets about the crew he hangs with, their contentment and wealth. Also, the imagined (but perhaps fake) connections to the exotic tribal people who inhabit the places where they vacation and sail their yachts.
Is he speaking in jest? No. He really wants to explore an enlightenment that comes from a life of leisure, travel and self-reassurance. Who knows what he finds in the end... is this a call to arms for rich, idle intellectuals like himself? A scolding?

The Winter of Our Rock 'n' Roll Content..............2007-03-04
I got this album long ago - and believe me - if you love good, hard drivin' rock (and some slide blues) this is the one for you. Absolutely amazing. And, if you're a little short on energy - this album will boost your energy to extremes (and the louder the better).
Johnny's base is the blues, however, he turned all that into blistering riffs-lightening speed rythmn - and a gritty, homegrown soulful twang vocal that will rip all the hairs on your neck into stratospheric electricity. Don't believe me?
Right off the bat he serves notice that he is ready to take you on his journey with "Stone County". The drive of that opening drum beat with his intro lead serves you fair warning. The song kicks in every way. And Johnny is up to the task of clobbering lead on this. The song speeds like a railroad train - and you are definitely on that ride. "Blinded by Love" is more of the same but only this time, the riff becomes more terse and compact. Johnny doesn't give you overly long leads. He is more precise, clean, and moves the sections of this song with spicy approach. In essence, most of these tunes are extremely well put together. All the fat is cut off the bone. What you have here is the juiciest parts. That is what is so pleasing about his brand of rock.
"Thirty Days" is a fast rockin' rave and here Johnny gives you a rockin' rebel lead. He embellishs the Jagger/Richards tune "Stray Cat Blues" with needed frantic lead and energy which the original lacked. In fact, I like this version far better. But, wisely, he continues along that track with "Bad Luck Situation" and "Rollin' 'Cross the Country". Unless you are comatose- these songs will increase the aliveness within yourselves. Then we have the excellent "Riot in Cell Block #9" which reminds one of "Jailhouse Rock" by Elvis Presley. Rockin' on the breaks and a slide guitar which will scramble your delicate brain cells. It's o.k. Just go with it. Johnny understands. He really does.
"Hurtin' So Bad" employs horns to great effect and mixes blues and stax soul into a heartfelt redition. The age-old subject matter - losing the love of a good woman - is putty in the hands of a professional like Winter.
He then breathes new life into that oldie classic "Boney Moronie". Tumbling, tumultous, riveting- he drives this song at the speed of sound. My only complaint is that it ends too soon. On "Feedback On Highway 101" the horns and organ propel this song at a less intense groove. You can bop to it. Johnny and all the other musicians contribute to an all-encompassing sound and montage of professional interplay. Good stuff.
We then end with "Dirty" an off-the cuff- bluesy number which - at first- sounds disjointed. But no - it is only Johnny and friends winging it on the porch of that house in the country. A bluesy end to a great ride.
In conclusion - this album is a great mixture of rock and blues intensity and especially good at any hard-rock party you are planning. Fast moving tunes- appropriate leads- subtle slower moving tunes to give you a breather between the escalating roller-coaster ride. Johnny should have been given accolades for this - but for some reason - he was overlooked alot- except to those who possess vision and insight (like your beloved Metamorpho!).
So, for all you rockers out there- instead of a pot of gold for St. Metamorpho's Day you get this album instead. Let this music wash over and clover you with joy. Let this shamrock 'n' roll you into pure delight.
I guarantee - it will lucky charm you in special ways.

A great album from a great guitar player.......2007-01-06
Why can't he do rock n' roll?!.......2004-09-04
So why do almost all of his rock n' roll records end up being so frustratingly predictable and uninspired?
"Saints"' predecessor, "Still Alive And Well", was Winter's highest charting ever, a good blend of blues and rock, but "Saints"' material, which includes a Van Morrison tune, a Stones cover, and predictable versions of 1950s rock & roll oldies by Chuck Berry, Larry Williams, and Leiber and Stoller, ends up being more eclectic than original. And it's not even THAT eclectic.
Sure, Johnny Winter's playing is very competent, but it's never truly excting, and we've all heard this music a thousand times before. This music or something excactly like it.
Don't get me wrong, I like old-time rock n' roll, but Winter's too-hectic playing fails to capture whatever it was that made, say, Chuck Berry so great, and almost all of these songs just sort of pass you by, offering nothing new, nothing original, nothing truly exciting, and not even a groove deep enough to plant an appleseed.
It's not bad, really, it's just - generic.
2 3/4 stars.
Not bad at all.......2004-06-06
Sound The Fanfare.......2004-01-12
His playing is superb and Johnny (who was being overshadowed by brother Edgar around the time of this release)shows he can still get a handle on Rock And Roll!!!!!!!
Some songs on here are just winners hands down like Stone County, the E.Winter/Hartman song Rollin 'Cross The Country and an outlandishly good version of Boney Maronie with Winter's fingers flying so fast on the fretboard it will leave you giddy with enjoyment!

After the success of Graceland, Simon's meshing of South African rhythms with his own overtly self-conscious singer-songwriter pop, Simon figured he'd best keep traveling. This album follows him to South America, where he indulges in Brazilian music and still manages to make it sound like Paul Simon. His quirky, introspective lyrics are front and center; set to the beat of multiple drummers, the effect is soothing and unexpectedly rich. "The Coast" is a brilliant narrative about traveling musicians and "The Obvious Child" handles Simon's neurotic obsession with middle age with a lightheartedness unheard in his '70s solo work. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
My all-time favorite album.......2006-05-13

Paul Simon's Masterpiece--And One of the Best Ever.......2004-11-22
Although Graceland was a landmark record, there were many "outside" issues with that record. Troubles with cultural snobbery and exploitation (particularly of Los Lobos), unsituated appropriation of "Third World" musics and musicalisms, and just plain screwed up "liberal" New York elitism. Some of that is still here in this album--even Caetano Veloso took some pot shots at Paul Simon, as has Carlinhos Brown.
But great art is judged by time as much as anything else, and I believe that this is a fascinating and moving record, whose subtle and shifting rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and chords represent perhaps the best admixture of Brazilian, African, and American sensibilities in the history of pop music (Jazz music is here, of course, excepted; that music is beyond this discussion and is in an entirely separate category). The single biggest thing that sticks out for me about this album is the percussion work. You get a broad and deep emotional working out of a variety of African-matrixed South American percussion styles, and the perhaps biggest musical achievement by Simon here is his sly and sophisticated incorporation of a stunning variety of polyrythms into his already legendary folk and folksy pop music. This music is at times simply gorgeous--it flows like a river, and on occasion it flows thick and lovingly like hot lava.
This is grown-up, laid back, (in the best American/Brazilian collaborative tradition), intelligent, lovely, and wise music.
Highly Recommended.
Dare I say it? BETTER THAN GRACELAND!.......2004-08-22
Don't get me wrong, Graceland is genius. This CD however is much deeper and much more powerful. It works cohesively as a record - flowing from one song to the next. It is underrated how tight the songs work within the framework of the album. This album mixes Brazilian and Afro-cuban elements - NOT simply just "African" music - with sublime ambient rock with supreme song and lyricism to create a sound totally unique.
Do yourself a huge favor and buy this CD. It is masterfully performed and produced, and it shows how Simon can easily be called one of the greatest songwriting geniuses of the 20th century.
The well has run dry.......2004-08-02
After the incredible success of GRACELAND, Simon returns to his investigation of cross cultural pop with this look at the music of Brazil. The problem is it is far less satisfying in its execution. The music does not have the bite that was found on GRACELAND it tends to meander and lacks the strength of rhythm found on GRACELAND. Lyrically there are no real standouts; one song seems to drift into another without leaving anything more than a faint trace on your memory. It really works wells as new age background music, but that's really not what I want when I get a Paul Simon recording.

I gave it 4 stars because, although I love it, it's not as good as some of the other contemporary acappella out there (ie. Rockapella, GrooveBarbers, DaVinci's Notebook), but they are very close. If you have worn out all of your Rockapella CDs and are looking for a change, go ahead and grab this CD - you won't be disappointed.
