Brendan Benson is the kind of guy who still sits by the AM radio late at night, spinning the tuning dial from one end to the other in a hopeless search for the perfect pop song. Little does he know he's considerably helped his own plight by making an album full of them. Unlucky in both love and money, the Detroit singer-songwriter has plenty to chew on with his third disc. Using wistful bubblegum melodies and crisp '60s harmonies, in tunes like "Feel Like Myself" and "Cold Hands (Warm Heart)" he lashes out at former lovers and A&R men with equal venom. "I always wind up screwed without a kiss," he hisses on the Phil Spector inspired "The Pledge." But, in the end the man who counts Jack White and Beck as devoted fans, knows impending success is the best payback. "Maybe I've been caught red-handed, making off like a lucky bandit/ This wasn't how I planned it," he gloats on the title track. It's really hard to argue. --Aidin Vaziri

…there is nothing average about the collection of tracks. It's just really good. No fancy adjectives necessary.

Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri

Amazon.com

Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"

Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-07-25

The long expected return of Interpol topped all expectations I had. Simply the album of the year in my humble opinion. Most of the songs gives you that thrilling sensation down your spine, especially the ending of it. They have done an outstanding job and musically they have been developing through the albums. AMAZING. Our love to admire makes you feel like listening over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Not more of the same Interpol.......2007-07-24

When I heard Antics I liked it but it was just a continuation of the first album. When Our Love to Admire came out I bought it thinking "What else can these guys do?" I have my answer. OLTA is Interpol but different. They kept the Interpol sound but did different things with it, some of it more upbeat and some not. I am a satisfied customer. It gets better with every listening.

2 out of 5 stars it pains me to do this..........2007-07-21

a major let down, from one of my favorites,
so close, if they would of just inched a bit closer to that edge,
and they did on a few numbers "pioneer" is great, as is "the lighthouse" and "wrecking ball",
sadly the rest ranges from average to very subpar
"threesome" "h. manuver" "chemistry" and "mammoth" are very by the numbers interpol
the remaining 4 are total clunkers...
i will go and see them on this tour, as they are great live (except at festivals and larger shows) but i will pray and hope the rebound from this
honestly, i am not trying to slag on them, but it makes me so sad i wanted this to be so good

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-07-20

All of these people who are complaining are either deaf, dumb, or both. This is a killer album, and every single song is excellent. This is a great band, and I don't care who they sound like, or who sounds like them...neither Joy Division, nor She Wants Revenge are as good of a band as Interpol. Yeah, I said it!!!

5 out of 5 stars i'M AMAZED!.......2007-07-20

This is my first Interpol album, and I am amazed!!! I knew that they were verry simulur to Joy Division because that's what all of the critics and fans say...but even though they may not be the absolutel most original band in the world.......I really like what they do. This album is so beautiful, and so damm good. Good, good, good!!! I love it!!

Because family values and devotion were so fundamental to June Carter Cash, it was inevitable that this tribute album--produced by her son, John Carter Cash--would encompass the legacy of the Carter Family and her marriage to (and musical partnership with) Johnny Cash. The pairings that revive the June-and-Johnny duets are a mixed bag, as Willie Nelson never really meshes with Sheryl Crow on "If I Were a Carpenter," but daughter Carlene Carter and Ronnie (of Brooks and) Dunn absolutely nail "Jackson" with their rambunctious interplay. Among the other highlights, stepdaughter Rosanne Cash gives a luminous spirituality to "Wings of an Angel," while Emmylou Harris will bring a lump to every throat with the closing "Song to John," a testament to eternal love and the afterlife. As June's signature instrument, the autoharp figures prominently in many of the arrangements, including Elvis Costello's rendition of "Ring of Fire." As for June's legendary lineage, Ralph Stanley's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," Loretta Lynn's "Wildwood Flower," and Brad Paisley's "Keep on the Sunny Side" all attest to the Carter Family's seminal influence not only on daughter June, but on country music as a whole. --Don McLeese

Album Description

This all-star tribute album was conceived and produced by John Carter Cash, the only child of Johnny and June, and features songs written by or associated with the beloved singer, and performed by an eclectic collection of family and friends such as Elvis Costello, Billy Bob Thornton, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, and more. This release will coincide with the publication of John's book, "Anchored In Love: An Intimate Portrait Of June Carter Cash". The only biography of June available, it chronicles her life from childhood to the early days of touring with the Carter Family band, her marriages before Johnny Cash, her early fame, her romance with Johnny, and the ups and downs that followed. It paints a dramatic, never-before-told portrait of struggle and success, and how the power of true love eventually overcomes all obstacles.

I love the songs John chose to include in this album. His choice of performers is excellent, too.

4 out of 5 stars June Carter Cash :Remarkable, Admired, Rare, & Legendary .......2007-06-10

4.5 stars
"To describe the late June Carter Cash as remarkable, admired, rare, and legendary would accurately express the responses she evoked both from the public and from those who knew her well. Yet to simply heap superlatives and ignore the multiple dimensions to a life which inspired such words would do a disservice to such an endearing woman's memory. When one considers that June Carter Cash was a member of the preeminent family in American roots music, on her own merits a talented singer-songwriter who penned one of country music's most enduring hits ("Ring of Fire") and, perhaps what she will be longest remembered for, served as the muse and deliverer for one of the most charismatic performers in the history of both country and rock music, such words suddenly seem less encompassing than they once did." Arik Danielson

Since June Carter and Johnny Cash died there have been several memorials to them. The movie 'Walk the Line' portrayed their life together. There have been several albums of Johnny Cash, but to this date none to celebrate the life and legend of June Carter Cash. June Carter is a member of the legendary Carter family. Her parents Ezra and Maybelle were credited for inventing country music. June Carter was country music even before marrying Johnny Cash.

John Carter Cash, June and Johnny's son,was as an executive producer on 'Walk the Line'. He has penned the book, 'Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash' and serves as producer for the collection of 12 musical songs on this CD. John's involvement gives this CD a family touch, which separates the record from typical tribute albums.

In his autobiography Cash, "Johnny Cash, speaking of his wife's musical talents and achievements, lamented, "Sadly, I think her contribution to country music will probably go under recognized simply because she's my wife; it certainly has been up to now. That's regrettable--my only regret, in fact, about marrying her". The songs featured on 'Anchored in Love' run the gamut of June Carter Cash's career. The album features six songs she either wrote or co-wrote,or made famous.

The CD begins with two of June and Johnny's duets. Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow start with an country take of "If I Were a Carpenter" followed by Carlene Carter and Ronnie Dunn singing "Jackson". Carlene sounds remarkably like her mother, June. The CD features "Far Side Banks of Jordan", a Kris Kristofferson/Patty Loveless duet that is one of my favorites. The "Road to Kaintuck", subg by the Peaseall Sisters and Billy Bob Thornton. Loretta Lynn gives a beautiful semblence to 'Wildwood Flowers'. EmmyLou Harris sings 'Song To John',with a loving and gentle voice. Grey Delisle brings a fresh voice to 'Big Yellow Peaches. Roseanne Cash's rendition of 'Wings Of Angels' is etheral at times. A poignant moment on the CD. June Carter Cash wrote 'Ring of Fire' and Elvis Costello sings a toned down version to "focus more on June's rendition" as stated by her son John Carter Cash.

"This CD is a must have for anyone that loves the songs June Carter Cash sung over her long career. The cast of performers is as compendious as the list of musicians that have played at the Grand Ole Opry. And the performances are all flawless and enthralling." John Gilbertson

I remember June Carter Cash as a vivacious woman always by Johnny Cash's side. She obviously had a life of her own, but she is intertwined within that of her beloved husband. This tribute to his mother, by John Carter Cash, reminds us that June Carter Cash was a woman to be loved and admired for her intelligence and artisitic ability.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 06-09-07

5 out of 5 stars Instant Classic.......2007-07-18

From the opening note, "Our Love To Admire" sets the mood, steeped in dark pop. The flow of the album is well conceived, with powerful tracks near the end to keep the album moving towards the climax in a whisper.

The vocals are emotive and serve as the vocal point for each song. The bass sound is full, yet throaty. The guitars are upfront, with a nice use of texture.

"No I In Threesome" is a personal favorite, complete with the title line in an unexpected place. "Heinrich" is an excellent choice for radio play. Other stand out tracks include "All Fired Up" (with some very active guitar lines), "My Chemistry" (actually some of the best Interpol lyrics ever are present on this song", and "Wrecking Ball"

I can't wait to see them on their upcoming tour.

4 out of 5 stars Cementing their sound a little bit further... get the normal copy this special edition is not worth it!.......2007-07-18

Firstly I would like to say do not waste your money on this copy of this album. Get the normal copy!

I bought it thinking it was going to be unique, only to find as I pulled off the wrapping that i managed to tear a small part of the paper cover album! Not only that, but when I opened the booklet up the cd managed to fall out (also comes in a slip) and get slightly scratched (not bad enough that i couldnt listen to it) and the poster, apart from being folded up way too many times is also a pain to try and get back into its original sleeve.

Plus it costs a lot more then the normal version. Just buy that one!

The album:

Apart from being over joyed at the thought of a new interpol album, I have to say that I didnt really find that much of a difference in the writing style to antics. I feel however, the difference between turn down your bright lights and antics is quite easy to spot.

I find there is some starking difference to the overall feel of the album. Almost like the recording was more refined, less analoge and more of a digital perfect stream of sounds involved ( I will refer back to antics for a better listen) but I like it!

This album provides quite a mellow feel to it, really easy to listen to and as an interpol fan, you can only help and appriciate that this band is finding its sound. This album is evidence of that.

I dont know if this will be as big a hit as Antics was with "Evil" but "the Henrich Manuver" and "All fired up" may prove otherwise.

A good Interpol album. Not as innovative as people seem desperate to find between albums but if you are a fan of the interpol/joy division sound from previous experiances (albums) then this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars It's a different kind of Interpol.......2007-07-17

This album definitely takes some getting used to. Where songs like PDA, slow hands, not even jail, leif erikson, have something immediately cool about them, or have that hook which pulls you in, you may have to dig a little deeper to find it in OLTA. I must have listened to TOTBL and Antics 100's of times so I know Interpol as much as any other fan, but my initial feeling about OLTA was indifference. I just didn't find it that appealing, and some songs just horrible (mostly wrecking ball). But after a dozen or so listens it is growing on me. And I'm starting to like the "New" Interpol a little more. So my advice is to give it a good try, but it's certainly an acquired taste.

4 out of 5 stars Been Waiting a long time for this album!.......2007-07-14

Interpol has to be one of the most underrated bands of our time. I discovered Interpol about a little over a year ago with Antics and Followed it up with Turn on the Bright Lights, TOtBL has to be the best interpol album ever made by them. I have yet to hear Our Love to Admire but you can be sure that any Interpol Purchase is a good purchase. I still spin the albums more than I thought I would. But do be careful! Interpol is an Acquired taste and I have noticed that the people who I share interpol with and actually like it, are music enthusiasts and people who just love music and appreciate the artists visions and artwork. There songs are a little different than what normal people are used too. But don't worry, If you are afraid of expanding your tastes or you have exhausted them, Interpol WILL grow on you. it did for me, each song individually stand up on it's own and this album does just that!

3 out of 5 stars this is on the so called "special package".......2007-07-12

i totally love interpol and love this album, this was practically gonna be true before i heard one song

on the new songs, they are pretty good, some classics already

my beef is with the special package, the booklet is essentially on different paper (thicker non shiny) but it's the same as the regular cd

the poster pictured is a masterful foldout poster folded so many times, think of a regular size cd insert with dimensions 4 x 5.. that's a lot of folds

the poster art is not too bad

i guess i was hoping for some pictures of the band, ok i will stop hating now, just make sure u buy the regular cd

save your money, buy the regular one instead

5 out of 5 stars two parts Hennessy to one part Lovage.......2007-07-03

Great album, another offering to my iPod from the generous library of Principal Dondelinger. It's at least half tongue-in-cheek but it's all great. I agree with other reviewers who have described the parody as more homage than mockery. The tracks vary but there is a nice consistent feel throughout, so it really flows as an album. The title suggests one way to utilize this music, but I've found this music to have potential even beyond being the soundtrack to the connubial shake-n'-fake. For example, my iPod likes to throw on "Pit Stop" and "Lies and Alibis" when I am walking alone at dusk, rundown by the day and the humidity.

Just listen to it. It's pretty unique. And I love the picture on the cover; I think it might be one of my Dad's nameless cousins from the seventies.

1 out of 5 stars STOLEN MATERIAL.......2007-06-02

"Tea Time With Maseo" in this album contains recordings and words stolen from Alan Lorber's 1969 Groupies album.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing..........2007-03-12

The production of this album is truly amazing. While there's definitely a parody element, the music is still banging. Sexy, fun, and cool. Perfect "music to make love to your old lady by"

5 out of 5 stars weird but great.......2007-02-18

If you think that Deltron 3030 is the best hip-hop album of all time(like me) then you should definetly buy Lovage. Dan The Automator's(Nathaniel Merriweather) production is at its best, and combined with the DJ talents of Kid Koala(Deltron 3030), this album can't be beat. Also the strange combination of vocalists Mike Patton(Faith No More) and Jennifer Charles works perfectly. I totally slept on this album until recently, but this one is almost as perfect as Deltron.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Great Style.......2007-01-27

I've always been a Patton's fan, and this is one of the finest works I've ever heard about him, it's a soft-progressive-rock ballad with a little touch of irony, it's a very nice piece of art, a masterpiece, indeed.

After fumbling around with producer-from-hell Steve Albini on Rid of Me (1993) and signing with U2 manager Paul McGuinness, Polly Jean Harvey is ready to live up to her lethal early promise at last. With its growling bass tones, "Meet Ze Monsta" sets the stage early on as Harvey explores her feminine psyche with an intensity and raw power unheard since Patti Smith's heyday. Unlike the terminally inconsistent Smith, however, Harvey plots a brilliant course through slippery laments ("Working for the Man"), corrosive testifying ("Long Snake Moan"), and fuzz-toned menace ("Down by the Water"). Skeptics who think Harvey can't outgrow her art-punk base are advised to cue up the flamenco-inflected, string-caressed "Send His Love to Me." --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Perfection........2007-05-17

By far this is my favorite album of all time. It contains all of the elements I love in music: gut wrenching blues, edgy guitars, beautiful lyrics, raw passion, a conceptual idea, and PJ Harvey. It is both dramatic and sleek at the same time - to me it is produced to perfection. All of the songs fit perfectly together to aid in the design. PJ's performace is simply astounding: a force. Like any gifted artist, she has a clear, unabashed viewpoint. I can see how some may be thrown off by the album; it may not be easy to stomach - especially with today's trend in music. But for me, I was instantly and utterly in love. Perhaps you either love it or hate it (I regard this as a compliment!). But I think everyone should give it a listen.

The Amazon clips here do not do this album justice. For years, I rejected the thought of buying this album because the parts of the songs I heard here failed to interest me. Then one day, I heard "Down By The Water" on the radio, and I knew I just had to try it. None of the other songs, much to my disappointment, were much like "Down By The Water," but most (I don't care for the strident "Send His Love To Me" or the prosaic "C'Mon Billy") were charming in different ways. "To Bring You My Love" is a bluesy track that sounds like what Fiona Apple was going for on her second album, "Meet Ze Monsta" sounds at once tough and bouncy, "Teclo" is haunting and lovely, and "The Dancer" is just plain fascination with its flamenco touches. If any of this sounds appealing, you should buy this before "good sense" changes your mind...

5 out of 5 stars A dark and ambient masterpiece.......2006-05-29

TO BRING YOU MY LOVE was PJ Harvey's third release and honestly I didn't know what to make of the album at first. I had heard that the band had split up and she was going it alone, with help from producer Flood (!). In a way I was prepared for a different sounding PJ Harvey but looking back I guess I had no idea HOW different. I had just come off quite a high with her first two albums, the excellent RID OF ME and the beautiful debut DRY. When I first caught sight of the cover I thought, "Waaahhh!" It looks like our dear lil Polly is all growns up, and quite the force to be reckoned with, fierce in that red dress.

Gone are the days of the raw Albini produced sounds, this album has got a major blues vibe to it. I had heard the single "Down by the Water" and seen the video but yet I still wasn't prepared for this record. I wasn't prepared to fall in love with another PJ album, especially one that's such a departure from her beloved earlier works. But of course I did fall in love again and I think this album is her strongest work to date, both in songwriting and in use of instruments. Polly explores a darker range of topics with her lyrics this time around, especially in reference of a religious nature. Plenty of guitar, lush organs and standout vocals make for this dark, dense record. The ten tracks will take you on an intense musical journey and stretch your imagination, leaving you in awe of the complex yet spare sounds and its brutal melodrama will bring you to your knees.

We start off with the title track, "To Bring You My Love." This song to me is the only song reminisce of ROM on the record. It's a bit raw but in a moody kind of way. As soon as you hear Polly's voice you'll immediately sense this is a powerful song. What I love throughout this record is the usage of her vocals, clear and urgent, Polly's singing is impeccable.

"Meet Ze Monsta" is a crazy restless song. It's all over the place, I imagine a very strong woman trying to fight a "big black monsoon" but of course she loses and eventually gives in to suicide to "meet ze monstra." Over a quarrel with her lover. Alls fair in love and war.

"Working For The Man" is a strange, strange song. In a good way. It is very sinister, PJ's somber vocals very effective in lending to the eerie effect of the song. I think this song is about a psychotic serial killer who preys on women and insists he's doing well because he's "working for the man." You know, HIM.

"C'mon Billy" is bluesy folk rock at its best. I love the acoustic guitar, the emotion the strings bring out of me and the desperate yearning of PJ's voice here. A very heartfelt plea from a very desperate woman for the father of her son to return and lay with her on golden cornfields for days on end.

"Teclo" is stranger still. I read in a magazine that PJ said Teclo is someone's name. I would've never guessed. Hearing this song makes me conjure images of angels, halos and God. I dunno why.

"Long Snake Moan" is awesome! I swear this song helps me curb my road rage. I shout along to the lyrics and instantly feel better, it's like a stress reliever of a song. This song makes me feel powerful and important because I can work voodoo and make mere mortals and even "God above, All drunk on my love..."

"Down By The Water" is the single off the album and one that actually did well on the charts, I think. It's a very catchy song, with the heavy steady keyboards, playful bells and the malevolent chorus, "Little fish, big fish swimming in the water/Come back here man gimme my daughter."

My favorite song on this album has got to be the very dark, "I Think I'm A Mother." Reason being, well, frankly I just don't understand the freakin' song and I long to find out! I'm fascinated with this song, from the slow opening of the guitar and the building of the drums to the nonchalant-ness of her voice as she sings something about wanting to have an abortion because she despises the mother-in-law. Wait, what?! I know, hence the fascination.

"Send His Love To Me" is very similar to "C'mon Billy" in that it's very folksy. A very heartfelt, beautiful song.

"The Dancer" is without a doubt the most passionate song I've ever heard. I dare anyone to come up with a more beautiful, soulful song! The swaying of the strings, the gut-wrenching
wails of her voice and the killer lyrics just leaves me begging for more:

He came riding fast like a phoenix side a fire flame
He came dressed in black with a cross bearing my name
He came bathed in light and the splendor and glory
I can't believe what the Lord has finally sent me
He said "Dance for me, fanciulla gentil"
He said "Laugh for awhile, I can make your heart feel"
He said "Fly with me, touch the face of the true God"
And then he cried with joy at the depth of my love...

Oh Lord, how that song kills me. And what a lovely way to end an epic of an album. At first I wasn't sure how to feel about the album but a listen is all it took for me to be very impressed indeed. 5 stars all the way.

3 out of 5 stars "Let me ride on his grace for awhile...".......2006-05-03

PJ Harvey's third release, To Bring you My Love is a middle of the road album for me. It's more produced, which is fine by me, never really cared either way, more romantic, and her voice is at its strongest here but I don't love all the tracks. Standout tracks include: To bring you my love, Come on Billy, Teclo, The Dancer, Down by the Water, and the gorgeous Send his Love to Me. The rest of the tracks are weird and plain. PJ is one skinny woman, does she ever eat? I prefer Dry, Is this Desire?, and Stories from the city.... better. This album is considered her masterpiece and it's good, but it's not great.

3 out of 5 stars Haunting Femininity.......2006-04-18

3 1/2 stars

About half of these songs truly carve out a niche in your head with their immersive, overpowering qualities, while the other half seems to sort of cruise on autopilot..All in all, this is considered by many Polly Jean's seminal work, and it is for good reason..Songs like To Bring You My Love, Teclo, and The Dancer show Harvey at her most vulnerable, and most beautiful, qualities that this woman brings to the table better then most of her peers ever could.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Wonderful Album.......2007-04-20

Singer/songwriter Griffin House provides a fantastic album full of outstanding lyrics and musical sounds. He does not disappoint. Have had this album since it first came out and I never tire of listening, with each listen I find something different that stands out and captures me.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and funny..........2007-04-11

I bought the CD with some apprehension as my taste of music is very variable. I must say that I was hooked on to the songs immediately. All the songs are gentle and melodious and articulate well. Some of the songs are quite funny.
Would surely recommend it ...

5 out of 5 stars Another album you can pick confidently.......2007-01-25

I bought this album, along with one from Matt Nathanson and Amos Lee by following links here of what people bought when buying other albums in the same genre.
Well, I can say this album is really, really good. Along with Matt Nathanson and Amos Lee, those cds can play in my cd player forever on repeat and after a few hours I just start thinking "hey it's still the same cd in".

Yes it's that good and smooth. No track where you want to skip to the next, they're all good.

(yes I used the same review for Matt since both are in the same genre and as good)

5 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2006-11-07

I have been listening to this cd for almost a year now and finally had a chance to see Griffin perform.
He is awesome.
He has his own style and plays for the music. His lyrics are powerful and moving... I got goosebumps on more than one occassion.
Buy it, listen to it, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, but kind of an acquired taste...........2006-04-20

I heard of this on CBS Sunday Morning and went out immediately and bought it. I just thought it was OK at first listen. After owning it for a couple months I pulled it out again and the more I listen to it the more appreciation I have for it. It's right up there near the top of my list for favorites.

Give it a listen (or two, maybe three) before you judge it.

Ever since Boise, Idaho, trio Built to Spill emerged on national radar with its major label release Perfect from Now On (Warner), its earlier recordings are infused with a certain prediscovery mystique. On 1994's There's Nothing Wrong with Love, the roots of Built to Spill's shimmering orchestral arrangements are present, but with a distinctly tattered edge. Frontman Doug Martsch bounds from moody balladry to primal screams, often in the same songs. Add the crunch of Brett Nelson's guitar, and you wipe the sheen off 12 songs that would be just plain pretty, if not for their garage rock soul. --Nick Heil

anyways, about the album.. its funny because doug doesn't sound as much like neil young here, and everything i've heard so far i like. built to spill in general definitely craft a sound that requires repeated listens to appreciate.. it grows on you and when it does, watch out, its addicting. They could also be compared to modest mouse, and might have borrowed a little from the washington crew since they came out in '93..,still they are extremely different in their own right.. and the songs here are shorter and pretty fuckin' raw.. hence early modest mouse.. i love it.. it annoys me when bands overproduce an album to boost sales.. whatever though.. built to spill is one of the few bands that i can love regardless of their sound being not as "catchy" if you will, like other bands.. because it's catchy in a built to spill sort of way.. it's hard to explain.. their pretty unique.. aside from apparent similarities in Doug's and Neil Youngs voice..

the song "car" is drenched in elliott smith (the beginning at least) which i knew what it reminded me of.. but i just now had to go through itunes and figure it out.. it made my day..

highly recommended if you like modest mouse, neil young, ben kweller, or elliott smith.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Is Great.......2006-05-29

doug martsch couldn't have brought back young age as great as this one. my favorite song, "big dipper" is what its all about. theres nothing wrong with love proves that even simple things like being a kid can have great substance.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest.......2006-05-11

Built2Spill one of the all time greats in my book. If you want to fill good just pop in this CD and get ready to think and smile through the entire thing. For me it is like listening to an Alternative symphony or classical melodies. I recomend it and most of all their art.

5 out of 5 stars Ted the spacegoat.......2006-01-08

I found a tape of this album in my car. It mightve been one of the best things to ever happen to me. How could such a great band go so unnoticed? i <3 this cd and i <3 this band x1000 omg no joke.

best songs: dystopian dream girl, in the morning, twin falls, and car

purchase now if you're reading this
you wont be all disappointed-like
you'll be all "Im sure glad i listened to Ted the spacegoat"

5 out of 5 stars absolute classic ! ! !.......2005-09-10

---Starting out being a huge Modest Mouse fan, I started hearing a small buzz for this little known influence. I sampled a few songs and settled on this as my first Built to Spill album... That was 8 months ago and I still listen to it at least once a week.
---This is the definative BTS album... Whether or not their others are better, this is the album that should come to mind when you hear someone say Built to Spill..You can sing along to every single song on this CD and it holds a very cute "Denis the Menece/Calvin and Hobs" youthful quality to it. Musically this album recalls Pavement meets a Flaming Lips jam session...But to compare bands is not completely fair, for BTS has a very unique sound that is very much all their own.. Even Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie (who are often compared) have a much different sensibility and aproach..
---Pure and simple this album has everything an indie rock geek can love about music. Its not overthought yet its not lazy.. Perfect pop album... Buy it now...

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

Modern-day bluesman G. Love, known to more skeptical ears as 23-year-old blue-eyed devil Garrett Dutton, shone briefly as hip-hop's great white hope when he released a debut record that paired blues-based playing with vocals that approximated rap. Though he was initially grouped with acts like Beck and Soul Coughing--pale faces who flirted with hip-hop but stuck to rock esthetics--we know now that young Master Dutton has far less in common with those inventive postmodernists than he does with, say, Jamie Walters, the pretty-boy pop dullard of Beverly Hills 90210 fame.

Coast to Coast Motel, the singer/guitarist's second shot with his bass and drums ensemble Special Sauce, does not even grant us the minor pleasures of his debut's "blues rap" novelty. This time, Mr. G focuses primarily on the R&B sounds of New Orleans, where the band recorded the album. That G. Love counts John Hammond Jr. an inspiration is telling: What Coast to Coast Motel offers is bratty suburban recreations of Hammond's competent but uninspired blueblood appropriations of classic blues music. New Special Sauce tunes like "Kiss & Tell" and "Bye Bye Baby" are absolutely fine but inauthentic and unnecessary given the breadth of great blues already available to motivated listeners. And any college-educated kid, like Garrett, who insists on singing with the slurred drawl of elderly sharecroppers needs to be slapped silly. --Roni Sarig

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Madness!.......2006-08-02

Who the hell is Roni Sarig and what is his problem? G-love and Special Sauce are one of the few musical acts out there who don't pump out the same MTV garbage on a regualr basis.

4 out of 5 stars A strong showing.......2006-02-24

Man, what's gotten into Roni Sarig's (the caustic reviewer) drawers? He puts down G. Love and John Hammond, Jr. in the same review?

Doesn't the sharecropper remark seem a bit...I dunno...'holier-than-thou' at best and racist at worst?

Don't know what happened to Roni, but G.Love is still recording great music. Ditto John Hammond.

4 out of 5 stars More Folk Oriented, But Still Very Good.......2003-07-30

The droll humor and wistful breeziness flaunted on G's first release is transformed into a more subdued, folk-oriented follow up album. After first listen, I didn't think much of this release, but it grew on me in time. The singles Sweet Sugar Mama and Kiss and Tell are equally enticing, but other tracks like the optimistic Leaving the City, the dreary Sometimes, and the brilliant, big band foray of Bye Bye Baby are the best songs, making up the foundation of the record. Although it's quite disparate from the band's other releases, Coast to Coast Motel is nearly paramount in quality to G's other releases, and it will definately start to rub off on you after a few listens.

4 out of 5 stars From Joe Pops with Love, G. Love.......2003-01-03

Wow, this is a great album, I can't believe it got a negative review. "Small Fish" is da bomb.

5 out of 5 stars Just excellent music.......2002-07-24

I can't believe this album got a negative review. Neither can I believe G. Love is getting negative press in other reviews...

This is what this album has to offer: it's got its own unique, creative sound - as every G. Love album - and it will grow on you like pleasure. I've had this album for several years, and I still get so down into it every time I hear it.

If you like artists from all walks of music because they create their own vein of music without fitting in an easy box ( e.g. B. Harper, Morcheeba, Sublime, M. Ndegeacelo, J. Buckley, GURU, Albert King, the Beatles and M. Davis), this will undoubtedly satisfy you. It took a few listening to grow on me, as I had other G. Love albums which sound a bit rawer.

Discovering G. Love is one of those rare times when you think: damn, I found an incredible artist with a new sound. A sound that's not just new, but simply feels so good you can't quite believe it. Perhaps playing everyday since childhood and growing up in a musical environment helped, but this is someone with immense raw talent.

The sound bites help, but are not sufficent to get a real feel for this sound. Hey G. Love, may you keep putting out this quality and variety for many years!

The celebratory spirit behind tribute albums doesn't suit every subject. More than a single swaggering rock star has come off as limp and self-loving, and thoughtful chanteuses have gone sappy or sour--which is why saluting the California garage punks of Sublime makes a lot of sense. For one thing, it's nearly impossible to screw up the collapsed band's sunny, to-hell-with-it vibe--its music is a mood encapsulated--and for another, any artist cool enough to take on one of its songs knows instinctively to embrace the ska sensibility and not skimp on energy. What we get with Look at All the Love, is a party with all the right props. No Doubt was an obvious choice and, on the disc's only live track, "DJ's," Gwen Stefani turns in a mid-speed sway-and-bobber; Jack Johnson chills on "Badfish/Boss DJ"; G. Love goes for funk-rock broke with "Greatest Hits"; and the artful Greyboy Allstars send "Doin Time" to jazz school. A single caveat: Hipsters who followed Sublime in its mid-90s heyday and have since had kids should order tiny earplugs with their copies. Fishbone does an admirable job with "Date Rape," but it's still as profane as ever. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

"An impressively diverse cast of musicians from a wide range of genres [show] just how much Sublime's music transcends classification ... nothing short of stellar." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE

"Deliciously eclectic." - CMJ

"A tribute to Sublime as big as Bradley Nowell's heart and as expansive as the band's musical vision." - OC WEEKLY

The evening of October 24, 2005 was one very special night in music. The Music Box at Fonda Theater played host to Look at All the Love We Found: A Tribute to Sublime LIVE, a benefit concert to honor and celebrate the legacy of one of most influential bands of the nineties as well as to raise funds for those in need. Artists like Los Lobos, Unwritten Law, Ozomatli, Blackalicious, Fishbone, and The Ziggens came together for one night only to put on a show for the ages. And, to top it off, many of the artists from the evening (as well as some surprise special guests) teamed up to belt out Sublime classics in the ultimate jam session. Now, everyone can relive that magical night with this special CD+DVD combo!

The audio CD contains never-before-heard covers of Sublime hits and fan favorites, from a brand-new studio recording of "Ebin" by The Banned with Chuck D (Public Enemy) to a rockin' live version of Fishbone's "Date Rape." These incredible tracks were not featured on the Look at All the Love We Found CD, and can only be found here!

The DVD features include a performance of "Pawn Shop" with original Sublime member Bud Gaugh on drums, a music video for Fishbone's version of "Date Rape," and backstage interviews with Los Lobos, MURS, Unwritten Law, and more. It also includes an in-depth photo slideshow and a behind-the-scenes look at the all-star jam rehearsal that included Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta), Eric Wilson (Sublime), and many more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great mix or Genres.......2007-06-18

This album is great for anyone who loves Sublime, but isn't afraid to hear their songs in a new way. I especially love the remix of "Get Out" and Jack Johnson's version of "Bad Fish".

3 out of 5 stars Nice sentiment - poor execution.......2006-02-25

I bought this album on the recommendation of a friend after we had a conversation about Sublime... we both really liked Sublime's music and he told me how great this CD was, so I picked it up. Unfortunately, I can't agree that the CD is that "great." I enjoyed one or two tracks, and I really laud the effort that went into them - it's never easy to cover another band's hits. But some of the songs are just bad - and with most of them I know I'd rather just hear the actual version. If you like covers and want to hear a bunch of different bands pay tribute to a great band that is no more, pick up this CD. Otherwise, just put in "40 oz. to Freedom" or "Sublime" and listen to the masters at work.

3 out of 5 stars If you are a true sublime you'll want to hear this.......2005-12-21

Obviously no one can do a Sublime song better than Sublime but what I like about this album is how everyone put their own style into each of the songs. They didn't try to sound like Sublime but at the same time, you can still imagine Sublime being involved with the making of these songs. The book insert has a little input from each artist on what Sublime meant to them which I enjoyed reading.

Notable tracks are Jack Johnson's version of Badfish/Boss DJ and Abstract Rude's Waiting for my Ruca. Los Lobos did a great job on Pawn Shop as well.

4 out of 5 stars Decidedly Good.......2005-10-21

I've heard the originals to almost all of these songs many times, so naturally I don't really have the same affinity for these that I do the originals. That being said, I like how diverse the sound is, instead of being true covers, the various artists take liberty to change/add lyrics and create completely different sounding songs than the originals.

The only reason that it's not a 5 is because of the track by No Doubt. Jesus christ I got about 5 seconds into it before I skipped to the next track. What where they thinking?

4 out of 5 stars an albom for the true sublime fans.......2005-10-12

first off, to all the haters: every band on this cd is like perfect. they are all bands that are willing to take a risk, no matter how much the fans whine. bradley would have been proud that such a wide, diverse group of people came together in the name of sublime. im sure he would be estatic to hear great groups like los lobos, spearhead, fishbone, ozomatli, and the one and only Michael F. Watt come to add flavor. new schoolers like filibuster and bargain music are obvious students of the sublime stylee and a smart choice. i am particularly piss'd at those who say avail was a bad choice. BRADLEY LOVED AVAIL!!!!!!!!(check the DVD). it just goes to show how little people actually know about sublime.

to the fans: this is basically an album of interpretations. each artist shows the listener why sublime is cool to them. it is fun to hear the individual spins each band puts on classic sublime joints. i loved pennywise doing "same in the end". also Los Lobos comes hard on "Pawn Shop".G-Love has a very cool take on one of the most underrated sublime songs "greatest hits". jack johnson comes with a typical jack johnson output, which isnt anything bad.the best is the Ziggens cover of "Paddle Out". the ziggens and sublime; 'nuf said.

overall this album isnt for people who want to hear a sublime cd. those people should all go buy "40 oz." and go kill themselves. its for those who want to hear others tell why they love sublime in song, and pay their respects to the masters of eclectic urban music.im sure bradley is smiling down on those who do.
