Rock's punk/new wave boom of the late 1970s and early '80s was a true grassroots movement born largely out of frustration and disgust with the perceived excesses of rock's then status quo. The resulting music was sometimes ironically reactionary, if nothing else, embracing the more direct musical essence of the '50s and '60s. But few took the notion to the extremes of Stray Cats Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker, and Slim Jim Phantom, the most popular rockabilly revival band to ever emerge from, of all places, Long Island. This set documents the Cats' brief heyday and its faithful aping of Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent. And if his vocal chops sometimes didn't match the quality of his fiery, often inspired guitar licks, musical evangelist Setzer made up for his shortcomings with sheer exuberant devotion to the genre and its godfathers. The hits are all here, along with some revealing album cuts, rarities, and portions of a 1982 live broadcast that display the Cats' considerable live charms. And if this set makes you yearn for some real original '50s rockabilly, nothing would make Setzer and company happier. Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars BeBop!.......2007-05-13

I love the Stray Cats and purchasing this cd reminded me of just how much. You can't listen to them without tapping your feet. They have a way of getting you moving to the beat.

5 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start.......2007-02-03

I kind back into the Stray Cats and Rockabilly from Brian Sezter's swing projects. The man is one of greats of Rock and Roll. Like John Foggerty, Sezter bleed pure back to basic rock and roll. The style may have been around since the 50's, but the Stray Cats created a update sound that will never go out of style. This album has all the hits as well as a few lessor known gems and some great live cuts. This album is a great place to start for anyone looking to learn more about Rockabilly and\or the Stray Cats. Would had loved to seen them live is some local juke joint, but at least they are well captured on this great collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly Revival.......2007-01-05

The Stray Cats are probably the best post 50's Rockabilly band and Brian Seltzer is an extremely impressive guitarist. This album features some great material, very 50's rock in style, often warmly nostalgic, and generally, quality listening and very entertaining. The live session at the end proves the band's performance, and the songs hold up well against the studio versions on the earlier part of the disc. Reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars Three guys who changed my live.......2000-09-15

The Stray Cats is my favourite R'N'R band for all the times. He mixed the spirit of the classsic sound of the fifties and the fury of punk. Trough eight official records and many bootlegs and compilations Brian, Lee and Slim, now sounds like a classic like Gene or Eddie. Thanks for all the moments of pure R'N'R you bring to me. I'm spanish and my english is no so good.
