AFI has been around for a while. I haven't heard anything they made before this album, but apparently it was different enough to alienate a lot of fans. In any case, I like it. They make quite capable pop punk with catchy choruses, a high voiced vocalist, and pretty normal guitars. It's not exceptional, but it's solid. Why I really like them is the bombast. Just the tone of the album is a little mightier and significant-seeming than most other stuff in the genre, starting with the opening song's war-cry esque vocals. They do a good combination of the singer's lone voice and several people shouting in unison, and it has the same feel as a general leading his troops into battle.

It could have been front loaded, with all of the singles in the first half, but it maintains quality throughout. The songs do kind of blend together as it goes on, but it's catchy enough that it's hard to care too much. It ends strongly, with the second to last track (which is oddly the first part of the two-part song that ends on the second track), which is a nice softer song, before the epic finale "...But Home Is Nowhere". It has one of the better anthems in it, than after it ends, there's a short silence before a sequence of voices progressing in age tell a creepy story backed up by a minimal piano tune. It then finishes with a stripped-down, well performed capper of a hidden track. Sing the Sorrow is a pretty good punk album helped out by elements that go deeper than the music.

Maturity in the Misery.......2007-03-27

With their rather bold major label debut AFI submerged themselves in oceans of dense production and studio polish; ambitiously expanding their sound into the bittersweet darkly romantic horizon merely hinted at in their previous outings. Yet with all of the overdubs and electronic effects, the band doesn't get lost in the murk as they perform with the same firey intensity that them such an outstanding punk band. The detailed, well thought out album flirts with both mainstream pop and edgy punk with an adult intelligence and adventerous attitude not regularly found in either genre. Each of the songs are distinctive and unique with the band seemingly introducing a new trick with each track; making for a very exciting, unpredictble listen that never sacrifices the overall mood.

Guitarist Puget often slows the tempo into aggressive but steady marches of what could only be described as anthetmic melancholy, his warm riffs and atmospheric melodies absent of blazing heroics but no less memorable and distinctive. His work more or less providing a dense backdrop for the band's emotional center, vocalist Davey Havok. Evolving into one of the best and most unique song writers around, Davey's poetic lyrics are mysterious, romantic, catchy, and heavy on gothic imagery without falling into cheesy cliche . His vocal melodies are often at the forefront as he plays off backing chants and vocals as well as his own different personas to create memorable sing a longs. Though not blessed with the strongest of voices, his frail nasal wail is convincly vunerable and at times even deeply moving, his emotional belts are full of fire without tough guy posing, and his spaciously used low breathy singing voice is sincere and seductive.

The melancholy but upbeat anthems "Leaving Song II" and "Silver and Cold" are superb introductions to the band's unique blend of autumn day atmosphere, pop appeal, and punk energy. The big mainstream single "Girls Not Grey" and "Bleed Black" would almost be catchy pop punk if it wasn't for the mature restraint of the performances, smooth dynamics, and the incredibly dense haunting sound. The experimental "Death of Seasons" not only features what may be the band's first venture into hardcore of the metal kind, but dance music and string arrangements. The beautiful lyrics of "This Celluloid Dream" climaxes the album with a triumphant stuttering gallop that isn't easy to get out of one's head. The hidden track that follows "..But Home is Nowhere" is the band at there most experimental and successful. Spoken word poetry, light piano and heavy studio effects gradually shimmer away to unveil the band's most naked and revealing ballad. Davey gives the best vocal performance of his career as he quietly croons with convincing regret in his real voice. The song gradually soars to a powerful climatic high before fading away into a droning sea of what sounds like backwards violin/guitar loops. This is the band at the height of the their huge potential and hopefully not the peak of their powers.

A good CD, but its just not AFI........2007-01-29

This is a good CD, many great songs that are dark and mysterious in their own cool little ways. AFI after Shut your mouth and open your eyes became much more serious. If you listen to Decemberunderground and than to Answer that. You couldnt really tell any similarities between the two. Not even Havok's voice sounds the same. But whatever it works.

I really cannot put into words just how great this album is. All of the songs are deep and meaningful with great instrumentation and lyrics. The singing and back-up singing is amazing as well. I have heard all of AFI's other albums, and they were amazing, too. Although their other albums are great, none of them can hold a candle to the classics here.

Miseria Cantare-Starts the album off with haunting and dark tones and chanting.
The Leaving Song Part II.-Picks up the pace and adds great guitar sounds.
Bleed Black-Another great guitar song with great back-up vocals.
Silver and Cold-An album favorite, this song with amazing lyrics and vocals.
Dancing Through Sunday-Great guitar solo and vocals.
Girl's Not Grey-Very catchy singing and nice drums.
Death of Seasons-Amazing bass intro, a lot of good screaming.
The Great Disappointment-Best guitar on the album, good drumming, amazing vocals.
Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)-Very catchy guitar riffs, unique sounding.
This Celluloid Dream-Amazing harmony between all the instuments and vocals, some of the best lyrics.
The Leaving Song-A ballad, and it fits right in. Vocalist sings while only the guitar plays, very powerful.
...But Home Is Nowhere-Great high vocals, interesting chanting and screaming, agian great harmony between band members.
Spoken Word Poem-I skip this sometimes, because sometimes I'm not in the right mood to hear it, but I still appreciate it for its beauty.
This Time Imperfect-The deepest song with powerful lyrics with great vocal and instrumental value.

I have listened to this album for a solid 3 years, and don't plan on stopping any time soon, as it's my favorite album. It really is an amazing CD with great variety and no weak points. All of these songs belong with classics like God Called in Sick Today and The Days of the Phoenix. This is basically a Greatest Hits Album.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Natural Progression.......2006-06-06

When I heard this album I was floored. I had their back catalog for two years prior to the release of Sorrow. To me this was a natural progression that should have been seen from Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes. Still the first listen of this album is very emotional and I still get choked up on the epic finale ...but home is nowhere/This Time Imperfect. Still haven't purchased the Import yet, but contemplating it.

AFI have come a long way from where they began. They have changed so much that many fans of the early years are very turned off by their recent efforts. I am not one of those fans. When I was introduced to AFI, I listened to "Answer That and Stay Fashionable". That cd has some of my favorite songs such as "Half Empty Bottle", "Yurf Rendenmein", and "High School Football Hero". That was some great music. Compare those songs to "Girl's Not Grey", "This Celluloid Dream", and "...but Home is Nowhere", and you will have a hard time recognizing that this is the same band. Still, the transition from Bad Religion-esque punk rock to Dark (tad Gothic) rock was not bad, but very unexpected. As a long time fan of AFI I give this album 5 stars because it's my personal opinion that AFI have done something fresh, musically, and not only that but every song on this album is so well done. The best part about this import is that the bonus songs are not only epically good, but they go so well with this album that I am surprised they were left out. If you liked the bonus tracks on this album then I recommend you get your hands on AFI's Girl's Not Grey EP, the one that has Reiver's Music. Another track you will thoroughly enjoy, assuming you enjoyed this album.

Great, But Get Art Of Drowning With It.......2005-09-07

I am a massive AFI fan. Had I more money, I would buy every CD and vinyl they've made, why, I'd buy the band itself! Anyway, I love a pretty mixed bunch of music, I like stuff from AFI to Weezer to Slipknot to The Cure to The Beatles to In Flames, etc. People accuse others of being posers for liking this CD, some are, but most aren't. AFI has gradually become darker, more melodic and slightly gothic. This was just the next step! This ties with Art Of Drowning for my favorite AFI CD, Sing The Sorrow is good for a gloomier mood (or in winter) and Art Of Drowning for a slightly angrier mood (or in Fall). YOu get your share of both. Morningstar is like a preview for Sing The Sorrow and Dancing Through Sunday is sort of a callback to The Art Of Drowning. If you're new to AFI, get both, since it gives you a pretty good feel of past and present, but it's best if you just get all of their CDs (vinyls if you can). Also, a little off topic, but everyone who likes metal and AFI should check out In Flames. I have Soundtrack To Your Escape, but Whoracle is great too. If AFI were metal, it would be In Flames. Overall, Sing The Sorrow is a great CD, highlights being ...But Home Is Nowhere, The Leaving Song Pt. 2, Dancing Through Sunday, Girl's Not Grey, This Celluloid Dream, Paper Airplanes, Death Of Seasons... actually, I was just gonna name the whole CD anyway, so... What does that tell you? As for the import, I intended to get the regular (but they accidentally gave me the import, lucky me), but if you want the two songs for cheap, get the vinyl 336 (for Now The World) and the CD The Leaving Song Pt. 2 EP (for Synesthesia). I haven't heard either (can't get the secret site to work) but I've heard they're awesome. If you're a completist, get this import, but get Art of Drowning, too.

AFI's best.......2004-09-02

I tried so hard to go on without purchasing this special edition, but just couldn't! I am so glad I was able to get this brilliant album/DVD. Not only do you get Sing the Sorrow, AFI's best album to date, but a totally sweet short film done in 2 different soundtracks *Jade's and Hunter's* You also get 5 songs done in 5.1 surround. But, the best part is the 60+ page hardcover book. It's so lovely. If you have the cash, I suggest you buy it the second you can. It is without a doubt rad. <3

Well worth it if you're a die-hard fan.......2004-03-08

I had no qualms paying fifty bucks for my copy of this, but then, I am a complete and utter devotee of all things AFI. Granted, I am a relatively new fan, but still no less devoted than the ones who have been around since their inception. Since I've already written a review of STS from a musical standpoint for the CD, I will go by the DVD. Clandestine is a companion piece to the album, meant to guide you in your path of discovering its meaning. It's rife with clues and hints that tie in directly with songs. AFI in no way spells it out for you, you have to figure it out on your own. But I tell you, once it hits you, it's mind-blowing. But this edition is really only going to appeal to the die-hards. The casual fan just doesn't care about the underlying theme of this album, and therefore will just be wasting their money. Otherwise, it is WELL worth the money and time spent on this. OH, and let's not forget the 5.1 remixes of some of the songs, and the fact that you get Reiver's Music, which is only otherwise available on the 336 vinyl (also out of print and hard to find). Anyways, if you love AFI as much as I do, get this as soon as you can get your hands on a copy.

Buy this in ADDITION to Sing The Sorrow.......2003-10-16

I wasn't exactly sure what i was getting myself into with a "limited edition w/ Bonus DVD" thing. but, i haven't regreted it one bit! this package gives you Sing the Sorrow, a beautifully illustrated book, and a DVD which contains a short film (done by AFI, acted by AFI) and great sound enhanced versions of some of the songs off the album and one not on the album, riever's song. yea, it's definately worth the extra money. because now, you have a copy for in your car and in your house...i do not joke, it's actually quite smart. If you are skeptical about the short film, well, let me put it this way, it's very college-film-school-esque, but it's the best i've ever seen. It is a silent film, but dear lord, stop being dumb, and get it, it's amazing.

Top-knotch entertainment for your money.......2003-08-05

This is my third copy of STS (one regular CD, one vinyl) and I must say this has been the most rewarding buy of all of them. The CD, of course, is excellent, although some of the tracks are a little overproduced for my tastes. The DVD is excellent. The songs all sound spectacular on a 5.1 surround system. The short film is... interesting. It certainly allows for a lot of reading in to, I suppose. The lyric/picture book is a nice way to round out the package. If you are an AFI fan, I would highly reccomend this purchase.

This CD/DVD is amazing.......2003-07-20

Ok, first of all, I would give the CD itself 4 stars. But since the DVD "Clandestine" is also in the mix, I had to give it 5 stars. The "Sing the Sorrow" CD is not the best AFI CD (in my opinion the best was "Black Sails in the Sunset"), but a very good and pleasing way to change their style of music. The band seems to have become a little more creative (ok, so some of the songs are very 'radio friendly' but so what? everyone needs to make money). Personally, my favorite songs on this album are "Death of Seasons", "The Leaving Song Part II", and "This Time Imperfect." I also want to say that Jade's guitar work is amazing on this album, especially in "Dancing Through Sunday." Also, I always thought Davey was the best lyricist there was, and this CD shows me nothing less than lyrical perfection. You can listen to it when you're happy, sad, [angry], heartbroken... It's just an all around great CD.

And the DVD... the 5.1 remixes are great, although "...But Home is Nowhere" is one of my least favorite tracks off the CD. All the songs sound great in 5.1, makes me feel like I'm at a live AFI show again and again. "Clandestine" is quite odd, and I came up with a few conclusions about "the box", but I'm not going to say anything. Watch it for yourself. This special edition version of "Sing the Sorrow" is great to have if you're a big AFI fan like myself... But like someone else said, if you're not that big of a fan, and you just want to see what the CD is all about, then you're better off getting the regular edition (especially now, since all of these are out of stock).

What then is taste?.......2000-04-10

The very reason I purchased this CD was the fact that it used reconstructed Elizabethan accents; attempts at accuracy are always preferable to bowing to popular misconceptions (like in Shakespeare in Love--ack). I found this recording both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating--one can clearly see through this recording the branch-off point between the modern British and American accents, something which had always mystified me before.

Musically, this recording is full of little-known gems of the English Renaissance. This is a sample of what's on it, for Kenneth Melia: Sing a song of joy; Eliza is the fairest Queen; What then is love but mourning; Shall I sue; Heigh-ho holiday; I care not for these ladies; Mother, I will have a husband; Rest, sweet nymphs (a beautiful rendition with soaring harmonies on the chorus); and Sing we and chant it. Kenneth, if you still want a more complete list, just e-mail me (mitsuo@uclink4.berkeley.edu). But I insist that if you buy it now, without knowing all the songs, you will not be disappointed. They are subdued and genteel, with that hint of playfulness which one could say characterized the court under Elizabeth I. The vocalists are excellent, never succumbing to the operatic vocal style so popular with renditions of this repertoire, and, I think, the least authentic. Once again, Anne Azema charms with her supple, almost serpentine stylizations, and you also get a wealth of other talented vocalists who speak the Elizabethan tongue with convincing fluency. The instrumentalists play with passion and a feline subtlety that will catch you and never let go.

Why no listing of the songs?.......1999-12-04

I'll admit, right away, that I haven't heard the music on this CD. What I want to comment about is the fact that it is impossible to FIND OUT WHAT MUSIC IS ACTUALLY ON IT! I thought Amazon would have the list of songs, because I couldn't find out what they were at the local music shop. I already have a good number of Boston Camerata CD's and I wanted to find out what was on this one before I purchased it. The local store even has a software program which normally allows customers to find out what's contained on a CD if it isn't on the cover. The only listing for this CD was "songs." This isn't the first time that a Boston Camerata CD has not had the musical selections listed on the outside. Why not ALWAYS have a listing of the music on the cover? Even if it's in small font it would still be worth it. So, as of yet I haven't purchased it. How does one find out what's on it? K.Melia

Lacks that extra drop of refinement.......1999-05-23

This is a hard one to call. Brought up as I was on the ultra-modulated renditions of this and like material on Vanguard LPs by Alfred Deller and his consort, I find this Erato effort lacks that extra drop of refinement that is needed for the courtly music of the Elizabethan period. (The street and theater music might be another story, but beside the point here.) I know it is Anglophilic bias working here, but I found (for example) tenor William Hite's East Coast accent distracting. The women have accents that, while not all that appropriate, at least do not jar. It is of course true that Elizabethan English was closer to what Ringo Starr sounded like than Laurence Oliver. Play the track that contains "I care not for these ladies," which is indeed sung with a regional accent and you will see what I mean. However, in general "an Elizabetan Songbook" should sound at least what we accept today as British-sounding, if you follow. This said, I cannot fault the vocalizing or the playing. But I will still return to my Vanguard sets before playing this again. Still--who can dispute taste?

Album Description

Handel's oratorios vary greatly in their presentation. In many ways, Esther is a rarity;it is by far the most intimate, not surprisingly as it was composed for the Duke of Chandos. The Duke's Palladian palace near the village ofEdgware had not been completed in time for the first performance so this may have taken place (as did Acis and Galatea) in the intimate surroundings of a small church, St Lawrence, Whitchurch.

We decided, therefore, that we should attempt to convey that intimacy of performance on disc; so we performed in the round with microphones in the middle, the orchestra in front of me, the choir behind and the soloists alongside. The result is everything that chamber music should be where players and singers can enjoy every aspect of Handel's masterpiece.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME.......2007-01-26

Esther is the first of Handel's oratorios by a good many years, written when he was 33 and enjoying the patronage of the Duke of Chandos. When he later became his own impresario and was running into trouble as a composer and producer of Italian operas he turned to oratorio as a strategic alternative, but at this early date his concern was to deliver staged entertainments for the Duke, and Esther, contemporary with the work that later gained the title Acis and Galatea, seems to have been just an unusually serious specimen of its type.

As often with Handel, there is no fully official version of the score, and this particular score may not even be fully complete from any point of view. The libretto seems to have been the work of someone in the frivolously named association of big literary figures called the Scriblerus Club, perhaps Dr John Arbuthnot, dedicatee of Pope's great poetic Epistle, but Pope himself may have had a hand in it too. As we have it here, the work breaks into two very asymmetrical parts. Scenes 1 and 2 start with a recitative lasting only seconds from Habdonah followed by a longer one in which Haman announces his onslaught on the Israelites, and from there on feature only anonymous participants. Esther herself and the other named characters make their appearance first in scene 4, but the change of tone occurs in scene 3. At this point the music gains gravity first in the chorus Ye sons of Israel with its extraordinary modulations and then in the striking aria O Jordan, Jordan. I myself feel that this weightier tone is maintained to the end, whether or not the writer of the liner note is correct in saying that the long final chorus with solos is out of proportion to its context.

Throughout - in the first part as well as in scenes 3-6 - the instrumental writing is vivid and varied, with an extraordinary pizzicato accompaniment to Tune your harps and then an even more extraordinary obbligato from the harp itself at Praise the Lord. The harpist is no less than Jan Walters, but sometime I would like to see the score and check out what seem some odd rhythmic interactions here between her and the soloist Nancy Argenta. There are no fewer than ten vocal soloists in a work lasting a little over an hour and a quarter, and a very distinguished bunch they are. I was particularly pleased to find Michael Chance in the countertenor role of the Priest of the Israelites as I admire the strength of his tone, but there is no real weakness among them, unless Lynda Russell as Esther has a couple of very slightly awkward high notes in Flatt'ring tongue, which must be a little nerve-wracking to sing as she has to find her note for herself unaccompanied at the start and later at the reprise. You will see some big names among the instrumentalists too, with Crispian Steele-Perkins on the trumpet making a predictably fine contribution towards the end, and of course with Jan Walters in that marvellous harp part early on. The chorus gets some wonderful work to do, and rises to it fully. I really am unable to worry about the proportionateness of the final chorus when I hear that incomparable Handelian build of tone, sung by 18 singers and sounding as if there were 100.

There is a good liner note by Graydon Beeks Jr, not perhaps the last word in lucidity (neither is the plot of the libretto come to that) but worth re-reading. Harry Christophers himself contributes a short foreword largely concerned with the recording process and highlighting the contributions of Mark Brown and Mike Hatch, his long-time technical collaborators. I was interested to see also the name of Geoff Miles in a role described as `editor'. What responsibilities this involved is not stated and perhaps I ought to know without being told, but I know the work of Geoff Miles as recording engineer from elsewhere and it gave me confidence just to see that he is involved in the proceedings, and the technical work is predictably excellent.

My collection of Handel oratorios is now almost complete, and what a wonderful musical experience they are. Each is unique in its own way, but Esther is unique in some very special ways, and I suggest that you do not wait until you are my age to get to know it.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-04-04

Handel began composing the oratorio 'Esther' in 1718. There is some confusion as to who actually worte the libretto for it, but the story follows very closely the biblical story of Esther in the Book of Esther in the old testament. The story tells of a plot of Haman, the Agagite (Michael George-bass) jealous and powerful vizier of King Xerses (Ahasuerus-Tom Randle-tenor) of Persia(485-464), to destroy in a single day all the Jews living in the Roman Empire. He is moved to this out of hatred for the Jewish servant Mordecai (Mark Padmore-tenor),who for religious motives refuses to render him homage. The day of the proposed massacre is determined by lot. Meanwhile, Esther,niece and adopted daughter of Mordecai, is chosen Queen by King Xerses. She averts the pogrom planned against her people and has the royal decree of extermination reversed against Haman and the enemies of the Jews. Mordecai replaces Haman, and together with Esther, works for the welfare of their people. As you can see this makes for an interesting Oratorio, which it truly is!
This is a "small" contribution compared to many of Handel's other works. However, it is not "small" in a musical sense. There is much creativity on the part of Handel as to orchestral scoring; he exploits his small orchestra and chorus in surprising ways, introducing new vocal and instrumental colours throughout the score, adding and subtracting instruments and voices in many and varied ways. This is a listening surprise as it moves along. And what a great performance on the part of the Christophers as well as some outstanding vocal soloists. Mark Padmore's (Mordecai) aria "Tune Your Harps to Cheerful Strains" was superb as was the Duet between Lynda Russell (Esther) and Tom Randle (Ahasuerus).But the aria that really drew me into the entire drama was sung by Michael Chance (Priest) "O Jordan, Jordan, sacred Tide." It was perfection itself!!!!The Chorus was extremely good and dictionally perfect. It is a great listening experience.

Vecchi, Arcadelt, Lassus, and Monteverdi were all masters of the high Renaissance period of vocal music, which spanned the late 15th to the early 17th centuries. In this era, vocal training was necessary for all would-be composers, since the church operated most of the music schools, which were directly connected to church choirs. Therefore, sacred music was a great part of the output of these 4 men, but they were also proficient and active in the secular music genre, producing many secular part songs called 'madrigals'. 4 of which are included on this disc: 'Fa una canzona'-'Il bianco e dolce cigno'-'Tutto lo di'-'Amor:Lamento della ninfa'. The English had their own flowering of madrigals strongly influenced by the Italians; three of these are on this disc:'Alas, Departynge Is Ground for Woe'-'Rest, Sweet Nymphs'-'Fair Phyllis'.
There are 2 rather humorous songs by Haydn on this recording; I was surprised at their inclusion, but after hearing them,I found that they do fit very well musically with what goes before.
Mendelssohn inherited from Haydn the strong tradition of part-songs in German, and introduced into it the rich harmonies and the emotional yearnings of the romantic era.
Ralph Vaughan Williams represents a generation of composers who looked back beyond the romantic and classical periods of the Renaissance for their models in vocal composition. He took the smooth vocal lines and modal harmonies reminiscent of Lassus and Monteverdi, and added his own style of touches of dissonance and parallel voice leading.
Vocal music sung in parts has been one of America's strong traditions since the beginnings of the nation. From the varied nationalities projecting their own individual backgrounds , both sacred and secular, we have a true melting-pot of folksong styles.
The STRONG point for the worth of this recording is its very excellent collection of songs; they do span the 4 centuries very well, and the choice of material is interesting, varied and well-sung.
