Product Description
World Leader Pretend's major-label debut, Punches, oozes with a raw, crazed, bouncing-off-the-wall spirit that can't be created or faked. Sloppy, garagey, analog and so damn fun to listen to, World Leader Pretend is undoubtedly the only young New Orleans rock band with a major-label deal. Beautiful yet gritty, with heart, power, and catchy melodies, as on "Bang Theory," World Leader Pretend sounds like a punk band playing soul music inspired by Stax, Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Detroit. Embracing the unexpected, Punches is a knockout.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Ezra.......2006-01-06

Being from New Orleans myself I bought Punches without first listening to any of the songs thinking that I would instantly like it. To my surprise I fell in love with it instantly but not for the reasons that you might think. Bang Theory gets you pumped up. Dreamdaddy is exquissete in its simplicity. Nothing dissapoints here folks. The songs are indescribable but as soon as you have a listen it all makes sense. Buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Music Purchase You'll Never Regret.......2005-10-17

World Leader Pretend's major label debut "Punches" made it's way to me through a series of completely bizarre and random events on the evening of July 17th, and I haven't been the same since. Self-produced prior to signing with a label, the CD sounds like no other I've encountered, a pleasant surprise from a Warner Brothers' CD. The music itself is amazing, and I would be truly happy listening to it with or without lyrics. There is, in fact, a gorgeous instrumental track on the album called Appassionato. Each song seems to highlight a different instrument, allowing each of this fantastic quintet's members to shine. Nothing ever feels forced or out of place. One song flows naturally to the next. You get the feeling the album was written from the listener's point of view, written as a CD rather than a pile of independent songs that were later sifted through and arranged into some kind of order that made sense only to the band and the producer, which makes Punches a CD that can be put in the stereo and left there. As for lyrics, I've always been a sucker for music that uses unusual words and phrases, and with the inclusion of words like "crass" and phrases like "hunky dory," WLP does not disappoint. Another lyrical aspect I find intriguing and refreshing are the girls' names that they chose... Nothing trendy and tired here. Instead we find names like "Carol Ann" and "Suzette," which spark the imagination. I could go on forever about the music and the band, the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I no longer feel the need to take every CD I own when I hop in the car. I know exactly what I'll want to listen to. WLP is truly a purchase you won't regret.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Polished Label Debut.......2005-08-28

These guys came out of nowhere (New Orleans to be exact) and have come up with a phenomenal sound. They bring everything to the front---especially Ferguson's full-bodied, breathy vocals. Combine Badly Drawn Boy and U2 to get a sense of these guys. They are on to something---big!

4 out of 5 stars They rocked Greenville, SC .......2005-08-11

These guys played a local club right here in Greenville,SC opening for hot hot heat and they rocked it.The crowd came late and they missed the set of the night. They were only allowed a half-hour or so set, but they made the best of it. The drummer, (Alex i think) is animated to say the least. Keith is a great frontman and they're genuinely cool guys. They talked to everyone after the show and signed c.d.s. I left a new fan. Spread the word - see them live.

5 out of 5 stars Live Performance That Doesn't Dissapoint.......2005-07-26

World Leader Pretend was largely unknown to music fans in Columbus, OH prior to their inclusion in the 2005 CD101 Summerfest lineup. Keith Ferguson's vocals were the primary surprise, blending aspects of Dave Matthews, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and dare I say it... Neil Diamond.

Oozing soul, excitement, and a solid work ethic, the band hung it all out for the crowd by presenting a good number of tracks from Punches. They stole the show from the other opening acts. Best of all they made themselves available to the fans, were extremely personable, and ended up selling a pile of CDs as a result.

Look for more good things from this band.

3 out of 5 stars wow, is this some old school Christian Rap?!.......2003-08-09

Well, it puts a smile on my face to see this album cover, I used to have this tape, havent listened to it in years, but it's cool to see this, brings back some memories.

DOC (Disciples of Christ) were some christian brothers from the L.A. area, who, similar to DC Talk, used to both rap and sing. And, like DC Talk, the more albums they made, the more they sang, the less they rapped, and the better their singing got. In the beginning they had a white dude who actually played drums, then he left the group and they became more studio oriented. But they carried a message of God and mentioned a lot in their rhymes about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and of the importance of the Holy Spirit in a Christian's daily life. That stands out in my mind.

Well, the album IS from 1993, so keep that in mind. The first song was the best one on here, "We Got It", with a music track that kind of reminds me of En Vogue's first song "Hold On". Also there's the song that was sort of this album's "Hit", which was "God gave Rock and Roll to you"- which they did with Christian rock group Bride.

the rest of the album has some high points and low points, artisticaly. Like DC Talk, the best parts are usually the singing and the least favorite parts usually involve rapping. "Can we fall in love again" was another high point, an all singing jam where they tell GOd "I've lost my way, I want to fall in love with Christ again"...a good song...

Well, that's about it. What can I say, this is 1992/93 Christian rap. Obviously, "rap lyric-wise", there's no comparison with today's Holy Hip Hop groups with real tight lyrical skills, like Cross Movement. However, I like to think of early 90's christian rap as being ahead of it's time in some ways. The mixing of Rock and rap started with RunDMC, but groups like DOC moved things ahead in that style, which sort of pre-dates Limp Biskit. Also, the whole style of having one artist who both sings and raps was a regular item in Christian rap music way before people like Nelly ever started.

If you are a fan of Christian Hip Hop, or maybe if you liked groups like Bell Biv Devoe or BoyzIIMen back in the day, and you want to hear some "back to basics" original christian rap, this could be the jam for some.

    Album Description

After singer Shawn Brown was unceremoniously fired from the Washington, D.C. emocore band Dag Nasty, he teamed up with guitarist Jason Farrell, bassist Nathan Larson, and drummer Alex Daniels to form Swiz. 1992 debut on Jade Tree.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Old school H.C........2005-09-26

This band never seemed to have got the credit they deserved when they came out; mostly because the style of music they were playing was somewhat outdated in D.C. at the time (which was moving post Embrace/Rites of Spring to Fugazi style) but this is one of the best hardcore albums around.

Many have compared them to Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits or even Bad Brains I think they sound more like Sick of it All or Judge i.e. with a more rock than speed feel although I do hear a similar Uniform Choice sound there. Another good point is the lyrics which are very topical and deal with a number of social issues.

Don't overlook this album, if you like bands such as Warzone, Sick of it All, Judge or even early Black Flag because this is a hardcore classic.

5 out of 5 stars You probably don't deserve this much good music packed into one CD.......2005-09-18

Are you kidding? SWIZ kills pretty much any other "hardcore" band that passed for their contemporaries. I sersiously have no idea why more people who are into louder, independently released music don't know about this band, and I count myself blessed to have been introduced to them through a fanzine review some years back.

NO PUNCHES PULLED contains every song the band ever released (to my knowledge), and the booklet has all the lyrics and plenty of photos to boot. The fact that a band this amazing selflessly packs everything onto one CD (that clocks close to the time limit at 68 minutes or so) is a feat unto itself. They could have stetched out this material over at least two or three seperate releases, but instead generously blow it all into one compilation. Well worth the money spent on a new CD.

Some highlights: "Nine" possibly has one of the best uses of the phrase "son of a [...]" ever cut to audio format; listen to this song next time you're absolutely livid at another human being but have no outlet for reprisals. After listening to "Nine" (Track 2), I'd immediately go to Track 16 ("Lie"), finish off the CD, and go back to the beginning. "Lie," "Ghost," and "Taste" are perfectly indicative of Swiz at their absolute best. Choice lyrics delived by Brown in a vocalization that falls somewhere between a bark, growl, and actual singing (the Rollins and Black Flag comparisons are interesting--never quite thought of that until I read other reviews.) This band, particularly Jason Farrell's guitar playing, pulls off a tightness that stands in stark contrast to the loose, feedback-laden gloriousness of the Almighty Black Flag.

Anyone familiar with singer Shawn Brown's vocal history will know that he served as the original singer for Brian Baker's post Minor Threat outfit Dag Nasty (and the material with Brown singing is indeed their best work.) A while after Brown's departure from DN, Baker and another, less compelling vocalist cut a song built around the creed "Lies are just excercises." The Swiz song "Wash" is obviously a direct response to this sentiment and indeed a biting indictment of Baker himself (who wrote the majority of DN's lyrics. On "Wash," a personal favorite from the Swiz catalogue, Brown screams "Lies AREN'T excercises. And if you believe them to be true, then you're a bigger fool than I am for ever trusting you . . . I'LL FACE YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL!" Wow. Think Brown's split from Dag Nasty was amicable? Something tells me that another great track on this CD, "Much," is also a stab at Baker, but I've been wrong before . . .

The cover of the Damned's "Machine Gun Etiquette" serves as the high water mark between what was punk and what had become hardcore. And "Sunstroke," a patient dose of rage, is good for what ail's ya'.

At any rate, you get 32 tracks of pure, unadulterated, raw, visceral yet still cerebrally worthy music. What more of a reason do you need?

5 out of 5 stars "Is" is now was, "going to do" is done.......2004-08-05

"Swiz" is outdated slang that means "scam," I've been told [I used to think it was a type of old, airy proto-muzak you might hear played at malls frequented by old folks--dunno why.] This complete discography CD is no scam, though, because Swiz's music is poundingly fast, savage, heavy, and otherwise just great.

The first SWIZ releases came out on vinyl in the late 80s on Amanda MacKaye's Sammich records label, which also put out the first SHUDDER TO THINK LP. Yes, that's Amanda MacKaye, as in the sister of Ian MacKaye of FUGAZI and MINOR THREAT. By the time SWIZ came along, Dischord and DC music in general had mostly "moved beyond" the primitive, galvanizing hardcore stylings of VOID, THE FAITH, SOA, etc. Bands were experimenting with what would later be called "post-hardcore" sounds: FIDELITY JONES, FUGAZI, FIRE PARTY and other bands were influenced by hardcore, but were experimenting with slower rhythms, more intricate song structures, less reliance on power chord riffing, etc. SWIZ defied this trend and tapped back into the DC hardcore scene's roots, invoking the rock n' roll ghosts of BAD BRAINS, SCREAM, and borrowing sounds from then-current NYHC bands like GORILLA BISCUITS and YOUTH OF TODAY and other hc bands like BLACK FLAG.

This CD is a complete discography of SWIZ's output during their approximately 6 year run, with one song from thrash side project FURY thrown on for good measure. The songs are powerful lyrically as well as musically. Shawn Brown's gruff, Rollins-esque vocals--which could make almost any song sound hardcore, no matter what the actual music was like--are the perfect complement to Jason Farrell's metal-inspired, crunchy, chunka-chunka guitars. The drums alternate between a faster, "d-beat"-esque pattern a la DISCHARGE and more mid-tempo beats a la mid-career BLACK FLAG. One song even sounds like an AC/DC song ["Lie"].

Because SWIZ are on Jade Tree, they are often mistakenly thought of as an "emo" or a "post-hardcore" band. That's not entirely true. SWIZ have much more in common with BLACK FLAG, SSD, and SCREAM than they do any post-hardcore types of bands like JAWBOX or QUICKSAND. However, because of the time of their appearance, and because of where they were, SWIZ often found themselves playing bills with weaker, more experimental bands, so the "post-hardcore" stigma sticks to this day. But make no mistake: this CD belongs alongside GORILLA BISCUITS, UNIFORM CHOICE, BLACK FLAG, DISCHARGE, MINOR THREAT, etc. on your shelf.

Vocalist Shawn Brown came from DC band DAG NASTY; their demos with him on vox are available on the "Dag Nasty 1985-86" release, which is probably the best thing out there by DAG NASTY. DAG NASTY fired Shawn Brown because with him they couldn't be melodic enough--his vox are just too rough. After SWIZ split around 1992 or so, Jason Farrell and other SWIZ members excepting Shawn Brown went on to form BLUETIP, who played a fairly aggressive post-hardcore type of music similar to early JAWBOX. In 1997, SWEETBELLY FREAKDOWN reunited BLUETIP with Shawn Brown; in other words, the lone SWEETBELLY FREAKDOWN album is essentially a SWIZ reunion album, and it coudl be purchased as a companion piece to the "No Punches Pulled" complete discography CD here. Later, Shawn Brown would front JESUS EATER.

This CD is essential for those interested in DC hardcore, but equally so for anyone interested in NYHC-type noise, or 80s hardcore in general. Can't recommend it enough.

    5 out of 5 stars Swiz rules........2003-06-09

What a great band. It's a shame how overlooked and under-rated they are. A ton of power, melody, and personality. I can see why people compare them to Black Flag sometimes, but when I think about it, Swiz are in a league of their own. They totally forged a sound all their own and continue to influence bands today. They're a bit of an acquired taste, though. The average casual hardcore/punk fan might not take an immediate liking to them, but you cannot deny Swiz's greatness. Buy this CD or find someone to tape it for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Unquestionably.......2003-02-14

The hardcore band by which all others should be judged but have little chance of living up to. Shaun Brown is an amazing hardcore singer with more soul in his work than anyone else. This band has inspired me so much over the years. Ive got the script style Swiz name tattooed under my wrist. The best.
