"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:

I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..

sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!

gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.

Album Description
The Grammy-Award winning band's 1983 album finally makes its compact disc debut in the United States. A Billboard Top 20 album, Listen features four hit singles: "Wishing (I Had a Photograph of You)", "Nightmares", "Transfer Affection", and "(It's Not Me) Talking". Three bonus tracks have been added, including the 80s alternative radio classic, "Committed". All songs are newly digitally remastered and the booklet contains complete lyrics for the first time. Furthermore, journalist Stephen "Spaz" Schnee has compiled new liner notes based on a 2004 interview with Mike and Ali Score.Customer Reviews:

Dreamy and Hypnotic; Outstanding New Wave Rock.......2005-04-18
All right, I'll admit, maybe this band from Liverpool, England, took themselves just a little too seriously in 1983, what with the silly hairstyles and odd fashion sense. Maybe they let the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental in 1982 go to their hair-do's. And maybe my 4-Star rating might be just a bit inflated, being that I've been an undying fan of AFOS since their first record, which is still today one of my all-time favorite albums. But cast all that aside, and you'll find that this is a darn good album, difficult as that may be for the casual listener to believe. While "Listen" departs from the harder-edged sound of the debut LP, it does find its own groove within a somewhat softer and more techno-fied atmosphere. Don't get me wrong; a few songs still rock pretty good, highlighting the work by amazing lead guitarist Paul Reynolds. But for the most part, the in-your-face guitar licks of the first album are relegated to the middle-ground, or background completely, while the drums and keyboards are pushed forward (could it be that the Score brothers; singer and keyboardist Mike, and drummer Ali, wanted their handiwork to overshadow that of Reynolds and bassist Frank Maudsley? Who knows.). In general, the formula works, in the context of the album as a whole. "Wishing" is brilliant, except for the annoying "buzz" sound heard on every single drum beat of the song (too bad that wasn't eliminated for the remastered release). "Nightmares" reminds one of how it felt to be eight years old and alone in the dark. "Transfer Affection" is a lovely ballad, found also on the Flock's "Best Of" CDs. "What Am I Supposed To Do?" is a fast-tempo tune, but does evoke sadness from the listener, as the song is about a painful breakup. "Electrics", "The Traveler", "Over The Border" and "It's Not Me Talking" are all New Wave-Rock oriented, while "2:30" seems to be really not much of anything; just synth effects that open with what sounds like an earthquake. Only "The Fall" causes me to hit the skip button. It's not all that bad, just a bit too slow and a bit too monotonous, even for the `Gulls. Two of the three bonus tracks are worth the price of the disc alone. The grunge-like "Quicksand" could have been a rock-radio favorite, had the group used it as a single instead of a b-side. It still stands up as one of the Flock's very best rock songs. And the live version of "I Ran" (the b-side of "It's Not Me Talking", at least in the U.S.) manages to capture the raw energy of the original studio recording. For some reason, there are two songs from the original CD and cassette releases that are missing from this reissue; "Rosenmontag" and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin." Both were weird techno-flavored instrumentals, which tells me that AFOS, along with other British synth-rock bands and artists (like Gary Numan), were musical visionaries rather than One Hit Wonders. So if you're reading this you must be thinking about buying the CD. Do it, and also what the title suggests.
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!.......2005-02-15
Their best........2004-11-18
In fact, I still have their first 3 TAPES--their self-titled debut, "Listen", and "The Story of a Young Heart". I think most AFOS fans would agree that "Listen" was the best of their 4 records. (The 4th album was "Dream Come True", apparently a really bad one.) They sound more mature on it with better songwriting, whether it's the dance groove of "Over the Border", the techno-punk fun of "Electrics", the dreamy vocal of "Nightmares", or the adventurous "Traveller". Flock's sound was/is so unique that one should admit that no one has sounded like them since. A song like "Wishing", with it's clashing synth/guitar/bass chords, still sounds rather exotic 20 years onward. You just don't hear such originality nowadays.
Speaking of tapes, the outside of my original tape of "Listen" says it contains 3 extra songs, "Rosenmontag", "Quicksand", and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin". However, they're not on the tape itself. I have the Jive/RCA version, maybe that's why. The other tapes say Jive/Arista. Anybody know what gives? Of the 3, "Quicksand" is featured on this reissue and is actually one of their 'heavier' moments with the deepest groove of any AFOS song.
Yes, incomplete... although blissful this was re-released!.......2004-11-14
I have waited many years to hear this CD again. I originally had the cassette when first released, but after taking that damn cassette everywhere I went for many years, it faded with the scenery. I have looked for the CD version on ebay and every so often one can find one going for $80 out of some remote village half way around the globe. Now that it is rereleased and two very important tracks were omitted I will still wait for that day I can get the original CD on ebay for $50.
The song Committed was a treat for me since I only had a sound snippet memorized in my head from the one time I had heard the song back in 83. Thanks for the memories.
Anyway, get this CD. It, in my humble opinion, is a work of art. The songs are strong and good. THe Production is very much unique for the time, the reverb fills up your speakers and gives an unmistakeable sense of place while you 'listen'. I wish they would have graced the bottom end of the sound spectrum a bit on the remaster, but then it wouldn't true to how Mike Howlett produced it. I guess I can just use my stereo's EQ.

Old-style bluegrass done up new and shiny.......2007-07-06
The first few bars of "Rockwell's Gold" reaches right out and grabs you. I was captivated from the very start and I must say, I drive down the road with it going as loud as I can stand it. The story is intriguing - was this a family legend, as it sounds? - about a cagey guy with a fortune who successfully fights off attempts by opportunists trying to wrest it away from him and who hides it so well it has never been found.
Another song-story, "Lena Mae", about his grandma, always brings me to tears, after numerous listens. "Who's Goin With Me" seems to have overtones of Bruce Hornsby and is about being led to the Lord by attraction to a pretty girl, the preacher's daughter. "Can You Give Me A Drink" is a rocking Gospel tune that brought me - not a very religious person - to full-throated song.
So much of this album is straight from music I heard as a child, so old-fashioned and yet so vibrantly new. Randy possesses a wonderful voice for bluegrass and is assisted by a great and accomplished backup band. "White Ring", for example, sounds like the sort of song that would have been a staple at the Grand Ole Opry in about 1940. This is another out-the-car-window-singing song...I find myself reaching to harmonize every time.
My personal favourite is "She Ain't A-Comin' Back" - a tune so full of angst and loss that it's closer to a moan than a song, with great lyrics and spooky tuning.
Even the quiet songs on this album are fully engaging, as Randy knows innately the proper cadence and intonation to present. He takes you along on this ride into real bluegrass so that you don't want the trip to end.
A brilliant testimonial to Kohrs' artistic craftsmanship.......2007-04-28
Randy's participation as a session musician on over 500 albums has emphasized his expert virtuosity. He's also toured with the likes of
Hank Williams III, Tom T. Hall, Holly Dunn, Hal Ketchum, Hank Thompson, Continental Divide, John Cowan Band, and Dolly Parton. His talent helped him find comfortable niches with country, bluegrass and even some folk acts. And his presentation on "Old Photograph" demonstrates his continuing affinity for many genres. While the Iowa native who relocated to Tennessee in 1994 can play all the bluegrass instruments if he wants to, Kohrs' international fame is primarily due to his fine resophonic guitar work. For the other exceptional instrumental work on "Old Photograph" he enlists support from buds like Scott Vestal (banjo), Tim Crouch (fiddle), Jim Hurst (guitar), Jesse Cobb (mandolin), Jay Weaver (bass), and many others. In 2006, Randy formed his own band, "The Lites." Three cuts early in this set (Rockwell's Gold, Lena Mae, Two Boys From Kentucky) are most representative of his band's sound with the inclusion, to varying degree, of his young bandmates Scott Haas (banjo), Andrew Crawford (guitar), Ashley Brown (fiddle), and Aaron Ramsey (mandolin, bass).
Whether singing country, bluegrass or gospel, Randy gives us a distinctive, brawny delivery throughout his considerable range. For a softer edge, he's more lyrical than vigorous with "Don't Let Your Wounded Heart Come Between Us" (sung as a duet with Rhonda Vincent), "White Ring" (straight-ahead acoustic country), and "Shallow Grave" (sung and played solo to close the album). There are some interesting guests who make minor appearances in the mix. Melinda Doolittle, an American Idol contestant, sings high harmony on "Can You Give Me A Drink." A member of MuzikMafia, Shannon Lawson co-penned "Who's Goin' With Me" with Del Gray, and she sings tenor on that song. Chris Wood's percussion appears on three tracks. Many other guests like Clay Hess, Carl Jackson, Stephen Mougin, Darrin Vincent, and Don Rigsby stopped by Randy's Slackkey Studios to provide a vocal or instrumental track or two.
I've already gone on record as saying that the consummate Randy Kohrs is a deserving member of the contemporary bluegrass elite. His exciting stylistic presentation is full of both tang and twang. His songs have thoughtful substance and gripping delivery. Whether racing or reflective, Kohrs' music on "Old Photograph" will stand as another triumphant milestone and superlative effort for one of the most happening musicians in Nashville. John Lennon's oldest son spent the seven years preceding this album traveling Europe, painting, and even working in a stage production of Mr. Holland's Opus. Expanding his horizons certainly paid off, since his fifth album, Photograph Smile, has been crafted with a self-knowledge that recognizes both his strengths and limitations. No longer defensive about sounding like his father, Lennon has finally acknowledged his artistic lineage. While not exploiting the vocal similarities to his father, he makes the most of them, turning in a riveting neo-Beatles performance in the upbeat "I Don't Want to Know"; a fierce rocker, it recalls what was best about Something New, and therefore what was best about the Beatles. Lyrically, Lennon's bittersweet renderings of love, loss, and fidelity hint at the pain he suffered as a result of his uprooted early years. He's a multi-instrumentalist, and his stylist experiments borrow from the songbooks of both Beatle John and Led Zeppelin--Zep's being the better loan. --Jaan UhelzskiCustomer Reviews:
GREAT album. .......2007-04-26
I don't remember why I picked this up. What I do remember is how blown away I was at the quality of the music. This is an exceptional album. Julian does not shy away from his heritage (and why should he ?). His voice sounds hauntingly like his father's in a lot of places. Some of the musical passages and arrangements are also quite Beatle-esque.
Still, this is HIS album and is full of well written, beautifully arranged songs. The title song, Day After Day, Good to be Lonely, Cold, Faithful(and others) are all powerfully moving, honest, plain old great sounding songs. If you are a Beatle fan or are just looking for some quality melodic music, you can't go wrong here.
Julian Lennon Comes Home.......2007-02-21
Every track is praiseworthy. With Julian producing, writing, playing, and singing the songs on Photograph Smile, he most likely was showered with inspiration by the music of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. From two opening tracks, "Day After Day" and the very John-like and atmospheric "Cold," you know this is going to be an amazing record. As the album progresses a "hard day's night" opening chord begins "I Don't Wanna Know," Julian contemplates the future as he had done in "Saltwater" in the philosophical, "How Many Times," and the song for the broken-hearted, "And She Cries." But apart from the Beatles comparisons, Julian offers two of the most beautiful tracks on the record, "Believe" and "Faithful" (with guest vocals done by Gemma Hayes).
Photograph Smile is a highly recommended album for any Julian Lennon fan or anyone who has an interest in good songwriting and music.
Love this CD!!! It is truly Julian's best work to date!!!.......2006-10-21
You can tell that this album was definitely Julian's "baby". The time and care he took in putting it together certainly shows. It's full of heart, soul and life experiences that truly speak to you.
The "I Don't Wanna To Know" video on the CD is absolutely hilarious! It's a parody of the Beatles phenomenon; and it is definitely done in good taste. He also appears throughout the video as different characters (guy in balcony, police officer, bus driver). And, of course, Jules purposely tried to sound like his dad, John Lennon, with this song in true Beatles, or should I say "Butlers" form HAHA, which makes it even more fun. Of course, he does sound quite similiar to his dad anyway, a fact that he can't help. But this song certainly shows he can REALLY sound like him if he wants to, which is cool! :)
But, as far as I'm concerned, he can just sound like Julian. :) He has a sound all his own that is truly remarkable and unique as well. I love his voice and how he takes full advantage of his wide vocal range. I could listen to him all day and never get bored.
I'm also looking forward to the release of his new album. Not sure when yet; but straight from the horse's mouth on his official website, he is definitely working on it. COOL! :)
Anyway, this CD is DEFINITELY worth every penny if you decide to buy it. You won't be disappointed.
beautiful music.......2005-12-22
The music on this CD is spectacular from start to finish. I should say that it is an extremely gentle album, with the vast majority of the tracks being soft ballads. 'Walls' springs to mind as a beautiful piano ballad, which is haunting to say the least. 'Faithful' is a duet and it is probably the most catchy song here. I love this one, particuarly the duets and the girl's voice singing is extremely pure and sexy.
'Good to be lonely' is also acoustic driven and contains some excellent lyrics.
Even though I haven't mentioned most of the tracks, they are all wonderful. It should also be pointed out that all those who love this should try and get the b-side 'don't let me down', which is another piano ballad, as fantastic as anyting on the album.

MELANIE'S "PHOTOGRAPH" IS PICTURE PERFECT!.......2007-03-23
A classic! Buy it while you can..........2007-01-12
I owned it on vinyl, and it always surprised me that it wasn't a giant hit, it is SO GOOD!! The liner notes only add more confusion to the album's strange fate, in my opinion, stating that the album was mysteriously withdrawn shortly after its release. Why?
The original album is featured on the first disc in all its remastered splendor. Some of Melanie's best original songs are on this album: "Raindance," "Friends & Co.," "Cyclone," "Secret of the Darkness." The second disc contains a couple of alternate takes and songs recorded for a subsequent, unreleased album. There are some additional songs still in the vault, recorded at the time: an updated version of Melanie's song "Uptown and Down," the folk classic "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," "We Can Work It Out," and others. Maybe someday these songs will see the light of day.
Crazy for Photograph.......2007-01-06
was one of many fans who inundated Rhino and drove Melanie and Peter crazy over this album. I joined the Melanie list and began my tirade and became the most hated member on that list, but I believed in the album so much and wanted to see it re-issued so badly I was willing to take the heat, as were a few other member's on the list. We believed in the album and Melanie enough to forge on and now here it is, don't miss the opportunity as it is released in limited numbers. I think every artist has a defining moment, the consumate work, a work that no matter what cannot be duplicated or be touched by any other, for Melanie it is Photograph. The only other album of its time that I would say runs a close second is 1974's 'Madrugada'. Madrugada was masterfully produced and arranged by her husband and producer Peter Schekeryk with Melanie doing some of the best vocals of her career. The song 'The Actress' from 'Madrugada' is brilliant and reminds me of 'Save Me' from 'Photograph' and would make a beautiful medley. Melanie has gift for taking a lyric and turning it into poetry some of her best lyric's appear on these two albums and I believe they really belong together. Melanie does a brilliant cover of the song
'Wild Horses' by The Rolling Stones on 'Madrugada'that I doubt any vocalist could match in the depth and emotion she gives to the song, not to mention the jaw-dropping vocal which is breath taking, you would have to hear it to believe it. That being said 'Photograph'is exceptional and in my opinion the better of the two only because it does have a timeless quality that is all its own. All things came together to make one incredible album, an album that is now 30 years old, but if it never existed and was released today I don't think anyone would be the wiser, it was like nothing else any artist of the day had done. I believe it was referred to as "experimental" because of the unique quality of the arrangements and vocals. A predecessor to mixing that is standard fare on most albums today, except in those days Melanie was the first to do it. The song's 'Raindance' and 'Cyclone' come to mind right away. The whole album is a testament to Melanie's ablity to tackle any musical genre and do it well. "Im So Blue" which showcases Melanie singing her own beautiful jazz and blues inspired composition to "Groundhog Day" soft and gentle at first explosive in the next. The alternate version of "Groundhog Day" on the second CD with its Native American chants would give Buffy St. Marie a run for her money. The very beautiful "If I Needed You" will make your heart race. She even reaches for the Divine with "Secret Of The Darkness" (I Believe) as good a gospel song as and vocal as any I have heard, will make you get up on your feet and praise the lord. Ultimately though it is Melanie's voice that holds in all together, the most amazing insturment of all on the album capable at this point in career of doing just about anything she asked it to do. I could go on about the excellent vocals, amazing production and lyrics but thats all been said, and not just by her fans. The album was on many top ten critic's list for that year and even bettered the like's of Joni Mitchell. Melanie for all her talent was an is a victim of an image foisted upon her with such a venom by the disgruntled Buddah records label that saw her independence an leave of the label to form her own with Peter called 'Neighborhood Records' as an affront to them. Its seems they believed Melanie owed them and now they would make her pay, and she did dearly. But never the less Melanie remains an immensely talented American original that if given a chance will get under your skin and into your heart and will remain there. Personally I believe that this album is exactly about that image, in the story she is telling with this album. Her story, how she got to where she is and how screwed up the music industry really is, its all about image she is saying, and how wrong everybody got hers. Its ironic that the most personal album, the best album of her career never got heard. Maybe this time it will. For those of you looking for more current material I highly recommend 'Pale By Dimmer Light' Melanie's vocal's are superb and many of the song's like 'The ballad of Crazy love' or 'Extraordinary' reminds one of how gifted a singer/songwriter she is. The only criticism I have of the album is the exclusion of the song 'Prone To Wander' but you can find that on the album 'Crazy Love'.
A great 70's album too few people heard.......2006-12-22
Like Mitchell's "Court & Spark" and Baez's "Diamonds & Rust," this recording places a mostly acoustic performer in a lush pop setting. "Photograph" shares many of the same session musicians from those previous two recordings. The result was, and is, outstanding. "Cyclone" [the opener] is an edgy, adult, Dorthy-Goes-to-Oz outing. From there, the producers allow for a series of pop stylings including Carribean "Secret of Darkness" and jazz "I'm So Blue" (with Art Pepper). There is a thumping version of "(My Baby Wrote Me) The Letter," just for good measure. Disc One of the re-release ends with a live recording not on the original release, but fun. I wish like the devil that the tour had come through Chicago. I'm not certain there is a need for Disc Two: the cast-offs and alt-takes did nothing for me beyond "Remenber Me Good," which obviously was the last cut from the final release. OK, "Secret of Darkness" rolls better than on the original release. Melanie was never in a stronger, more confident voice than the late 70's, and this is the best of those recordings. My thanks to "da Brat" in her listmania for alerting me to this re-release. I never knew there was a bigger Mealnie fan than me. I hope we meet some day. And my GREAT thanks to all the other reviwers who share my unbridled joy for this record[ing]. "Photograph" made being 15 fun. To find it again and read all your reviews at 45 is beyond words. Keep the faith and "remember her good".

While not quite the thrill-a-minute ride you might expect, Space Mtn nevertheless populate their debut record with a solid set of guitar pop songs and indie angst, fueled by the charm and lyrical chops of lead singer Dina Waxman. She spreads the melancholy on thick but never stares too deeply into her own navel, like Throwing Muses without the eerily poetic subtext. There are other reference points too; dashes of The Cardigans and The Spinanes murmur noticeably in the background. But Waxman and her band mix up the dynamics and moods enough to avoid easy comparisons and the diversity of the music keeps the record fresh. While their variety gives them personality, it creates new problems as well. After the easy buzz of songs like "Hovercraft" it's tough to come all the way down to the second half of the record, which is heavy on pretty but less-focused ballads ("Mercy River" and "Seals"). Still, the melodic core is true, and you'll find more than a few unexpected twists and turns to enjoy. -Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

I first saw Dina play in San Francisco in the summer of 2005 and have been a fan since.
The real question is...when does the next album come out?

Waxman comes across as depressed and angry, alive and wounded on this album and that is what makes it really come alive. The range of emotion displayed here is painted on thick against a backdrop of smart beats and unique melodies.
This album will make you feel like there are people out there that can and will dedicate themselves to making music that does not simply have to flow with the mainstream.
Ride Space Mtn. You will like what is does to your head.
