4 out of 5 stars Knee deep snow.......2006-10-16

Folk-popster Leslie Feist garnered a lot more attention with her second solo album, "Let it Die." Now she follows it up with "Open Season," which is basically a lot of odds and ends -- remixes, B-sides, and alternate versions. Sure, not everything is absolutely perfect, but it's a good little album of bits and pieces.

It opens on a quiet note with a piano version of "One Evening," which is basically a pretty, downbeat little instrumental. Things start to kick off with the acoustic-driven "Inside and Out (Apostle of Hustle Unmix," which brings it down to gritty guitar-driven melodies. Okay, whatever, but not exactly my cup of tea.

But the remixes are good stuff -- "Mushaboom" gets done over and over, whether it's a perky pop melody, a heavier techno-laced one, an almost wordless mix by VV, or the peak of the album -- Postal Service's delicate trip-hop remix. There's also the murky "Lonely Lonely (Frisbee'd Mix)," a jazzy "Gatekeeper" remix, and a funky redone "When I Was a Young Girl."

There are also some songs that haven't been heard on her regular album: the dreamy "Snow Lion" with Readymade FC, the trippy French "Tout Doucement," the taut ballad "Simple Story" with Jane Birkin," and the naughty-edged "Lovertits" (well, what did you expect with that title?) with Gonzales.

Most albums of B-sides and remixes are pretty much half-and-half. Fortunately, Feist scores higher with an almost perfect array of remixes, and four excellent individual songs. Don't expect the same sound as "Let it Die," though -- the folkpop sound can only be found in a couple of songs here, like the full mix of "Gatekeeper" and the unmix of "Inside and Out."

Instead, we get all sorts of remixes -- jazz, funk, trip-hop, hard electro, and even "One Evening" pared down to a single piano melody. And the songs get a bit of a twist, with everything from skipping vocals to crunching snow to scratching vinyl. Sometimes you'd hardly even know they were the same song, except for the occasional cry of "Mushaboom!"

And fortunately Feist never gets lost in all this remixing, unmixing and reworking. Her clear, fresh voice cuts through all the beats and extra instruments. But she sounds best in the four original songs, with rippling piano, harp and some blippy sound effects. "Tout Doucement" is especially charming -- it sounds like a French cafe at happy hour.

"Open Season" won't give anyone reason to fire at Feist. Her odds and ends sound wonderfully polished, with only a few rough diamonds left over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful .......2006-09-08

"The evening was long
My guesses were true
You saw me see you
That something you said
The timing was right"

Playful in beauty, Feist's Open Season is a mingling of richly orchestrated sounds and remixes. One Evening (solo piano) is striking in its ornate textures even in the straightforward solo version. The Remix later in the album is hardly recognizable and the mood more sultry.

Inside and Out has dreamy lyrics, but is edgy in acoustic musical exploration. Snow Lion reminds me of Magnet's laid-back albums and the beauty melts into a subtle discordance on a moonlit landscape. The Mushaboom Mocky remix seems the best of the versions on this album, but I still prefer the original song from the Let it Die album recorded in Paris.

"You treat me like a vision in the night
Someone there to stand behind you
When your world ain't working right
I ain't no vision, I am the girl
who loves you inside and out"

A better introduction to Leslie Feist would be the Let it Die album, but this one might make you curious and interested enough to listen to all her music.

Though major stardom remained elusive for the Replacements, the band still has those who love them in the way others love the Beatles or the Stones. Paul Westerberg, Bob and Tommy Stinson, Chris Mars, and Slip Dunlap were distinct individuals--characters--larger than life, and a bit cartoonish. It's fitting, then, that Westerberg now finds himself behind the soundtrack of a major animated feature. Open Season features nine new songs, two of which team him up with Tommy Stinson (another one, "I Belong," appears a second time, performed by Pete Yorn). Lyrically, Westerberg manages to serve the needs of a family movie yet still sound like himself (granted, meadows and bears are new to his lexicon). Standouts include the upbeat-with-an-underbelly-of-melancholy "Any Better than This" and the stomping singalong "Right to Arm Bears." --David Greenberger

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Westerberg's songs are beautiful.......2007-02-11

Paul Westerberg's songs on this soundtrack are just excellent. I couldn't believe the caliber of the lyrics. His work on Open Season reminds me of Harry Nilsson's work in the animated classic "The Point". Westerberg's work brought me up short . . . I said to myself, "WHO is that?". I had to have the soundtrack. Treat yourself. Such excellent lyrics on original songs combined with work from other artists. You will listen to this one over and over. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Rocks.......2007-01-23

It rocks, and it's kid-friendly. Works as a stand-alone PW album too. Just fast-forward through Talking Heads...

4 out of 5 stars Sloppy fun.......2006-11-07

This cd has a kind of loose feel, in keeping with Paul's recent solo work and work under the Grandpaboy alias. I heard the first three songs and thought they could have been a little tighter, both in terms of production and composition, but then the cd really picked up steam. Paul's originals stack up nicely next to the Talking Heads' Wild Wild Life, and that's saying a lot because Wild Wild Life is a great song.

4 out of 5 stars Classic paul westerberg, best in a while, good national exposure again.......2006-11-04

Paul westerberg is a name that pushed his way to the frontlines of independent music, then Sire records, with his band the replacements in the late 80's, and went out as a solo artist in the 90's with a luke warm reception, but a loyal cult following. Now he gets his day in the spotlight again with the "Open Season" soundtrack. Similar to curious george did with Jack Johnson, Open season features Paul Westerberg as the primary musician. These songs are fun and reminicent of old replacements music and paul's earlier albums. His last couple of releases were more ooutside his regular box, but still good, but he returns to classic form here. Although the songs are based off of the movie, many can stand well on their own. Check it out, listen to the previews here on amazon. A must for Westerberg fans.

5 out of 5 stars This is a kids soundtrack.......2006-10-14

I notice some of the other people comparing this to the Replacements etc. Its a soundtrack to a kids movie written by the lead singer of the Replacements. Paul makes fun catchy songs that best anything written for other soundtracks such as Elton John - Lion King, etc.. There is some fantastic guitar riffs on this. Love You in the Fall is a great example. All the 'Mats fans need to lighten up. Enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Living Up To A Name.......2007-01-01

A great band at some point has to live up to it's name. With the sophomore LP, I think British Sea Power has done so. All hail the great battling ships, may they triumph forever. "Drape yourself in greenery, become part of the scenery!" YEAH! Keep the melodic melancholies alive!

3 out of 5 stars CD starts strong but then loses steam.......2006-06-25

While I generally like offbeat, very stylistic bands British Sea Power hasn't found the right balance for me. The sound is interesting without being addicting IMHO.

4 out of 5 stars A very very good indie rock album - you'll probably like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-08

British Sea Power's "Open Season" isn't a classic album, but it IS very very good. They managed to create an album full of catchy songs which are also interesting and fun to listen to. There aren't any cheesy songs or guilty pleasures to be found here. The singer is pretty good - he's fits the music and won't annoy you like some of the other bands I've reviewed. Every song is good here, though none are really "standouts" per se. The lyrics are usually kind've hard to make out, but sometimes they're pretty good when you can. The musicianship here is crisp and clear - it sounds like an indie rock album from the 90's most of the time. Indie rock fans should really like this album, and I would argue it has some appeal to fans of other genres, too. Overall this is really well done, but its lack of originality and its lack of a "wow" factor hurt the rating - it comes close to being classic, though. Still, this is highly recommended!

Highlights include:
"It Ended On an Oily Stage"
"To Go To Sleep"
the rest are really good, too

2 out of 5 stars Someone get this man some caffeine!.......2006-01-03

Geez man, live a little! The vocalist is all but rocking out on this release, which is fine, but it drags the musicians behind him to fall asleep. I was referred this by gnod.net because I really just now learned that I like My Morning Jacket and wanted to see what other bands sound like them. But this is kind of like tranquilizer rock.

The jist of the album is that this band wants to recall Simple Minds and Billy Corgan's quietest, softest tracks. That's what I got from it. They really want to make pop songs about nothing but leaving life behind using breathy vocals and a weak backing band. And then to top it all off, they try getting crazy for the last song to make up for not having energy throughout any of the other tracks. A total bore album with no backbone or originality.

Feist's diverse musical talents have taken her on many paths, from band member (Broken Social Scene, By Divine Right) to guest performer (Peaches, Jane Birken) to respected solo artist. Whatever the project, there has never been a question that the Toronto musician is heavily respected by her peers. When the call went out to remix Feist's work, her respected contemporaries were quick to come on board. Such is the basis of Open Season, a collection of remixes and rarities from Feist's heavily-acclaimed 2004 release Let It Die. Curiously, more than a third of this music comes from remixes of just two songs from that disc, specifically four different versions of "Mushaboom" and two takes of "Gatekeeper." Some of the re-workings arguably exceed the original cuts, most notably The Postal Service who turns "Mushaboom" into a synth-driven track with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) offering joyful harmonies throughout. K-OS' strong take on the same tune follows a hip hop feel, complete with his MC skills front and center. The CD's sweetest spot, however, comes in the form of an emotive acoustic offering of "Inside + Out," captured during a BBC performance. Also worth noting is Feist's softened cover of "Lovertits" a track originally recorded by her famous former roommate Peaches. For casual Feist fans, this may not be the best introduction to her talents. For Feist aficionados, however, it certainly shows the level of respect that other musicians have for the singer, and will provide some great audio candy until her next full-length release. --Denise Sheppard

Wow, if id actaully paid for this album i'd be even more angry right now! There are some nice remixes on this album, but more importantly there or some real howlers, who is this "VV", cut his attemps and you'd have a good album, im not sure if its possible to mangle mushaboom more, even if he tried. If you loved Let it die, which i did, dont buy this, youll be sorry...oh im listening to Open Season as i write this, When i was a young girl [vv mix] is playing, seriously cringe worthy

3 out of 5 stars Open Season Review from JamBase.com.......2006-09-26

I am a bit weary of remixes. While they are often marketed as an aperitif to an upcoming release to placate fans, I see them more as a shameless cash grab meant at boosting record sales without boosting song selection. It is merely a case where the context bothers me regardless of the content, even though there are many eponymous remix albums out there worth trolling over to the local record shop and grabbing. Still, the majority of remixes to which the mainstream has access are crap, as recent examples from Madonna and Elvis Presley - rest his soul - exemplify. Therefore, when Feist's brand new collection of ragtag b-sides, remixes, collaborations, and demos entitled Open Season: Remixes and Collabs surfaced, a literal question mark emerged above my head, wondering why Feist felt the need to release a pseudo-new album in between the brilliant Let it Die and one due in January. I definitely hoped the quality of the remixes and collaborations would dissipate my contextual red flag, and to be honest, I was genuinely excited at the prospect of new material from Feist. Yet after digesting each song half-a-dozen times, I fail to comprehend why, for any other reason than money, this album was released at all.

There are some great songs on this collection, but very few of them differ from Let it Die. The few examples worth noting are the gorgeous, solo piano take on "One Evening" provided by Gonzales, "Snow Lion," which is unique to the record, and a lovely interpretation of "Mushaboom" by lo-fi wizards The Postal Service. The heightened digitized tempo juxtaposes perfectly with Feist's languid croon, producing a rendition as good as, if not better than, the original. Lastly, the soft-spoken, acoustic version of "Inside and Out" with Apostle of Hustle is a laggard treat, differing from the electro-pop-tinged original by stripping down the arrangement and featuring Feist's gorgeous pipes even more. Her voice is so good that often next-to-no accompaniment at all is best.

But that is about it. "Mushaboom" is featured an astounding four times while you get "One Evening" and "Gatekeeper" twice, adding up to more than half the record. No matter how much you love Feist, four versions of the same song, done in a reasonably similar fashion each time, is tiresome. In addition, other than the aforementioned, there is no other track on Open Season that outshines Let it Die or takes the track into different terrain. Two versions of "Mushaboom" almost butcher the song, most notably on a confusing, hip-hop-infused remix with K-os that adds nothing lyrically. Furthermore, "Tout Doucement," another lovely, Parisian-fuelled ditty, is so close to the original that I believe they just copied and pasted the track from one album to another. It is not that Open Season struggles musically, because that is not the case. No matter what Feist sings, it comes off sweeter than acid-laced tupelo honey, but on its own merit, it is not a worthwhile collection. Let it Die is mesmerizing; Open Season is just leaching off its predecessor's popularity. I am still weary of remixes. -Shain Shapiro

A better introduction to Leslie Feist would be the Let it Die album, but this one might make you curious and interested enough to listen to all her music.

5 out of 5 stars Huzzah again for Feist!.......2006-07-29

As a huge Feist fan, I was pleased to see this at the music store I work at (I only paid $9!) and picked it up immediately. I am a bit disappointed by Amazon.com's price, but I may have picked up some sort of reissue that came out last week. I had heard two of the remixes at a clothing store, where I also work, so it was great to find them on CD. While I agree it's a bit of overkill to have multiple remixes, such as four for Mushaboom, I enjoyed each one. I think Let It Die is a pretty mellow album, so it's a treat to see her turn it up live, and hear others mix up the beat in these remixes. I was also ecstatic to see a Peaches cover, nonetheless one of my favorite songs, Lovertits. Fans of the indepedent music scene in Canada and Feist's social circles will appreciate that gem as well as a remix by the Apostles of Hustle, which features members of Broken Social Scene. I don't think Feist needs to follow any major label formula, as she has contributed to many albums and projects over the years and has self released a few pieces. Although not all fans will want to dish out the money for remixes, I'm satisfied with my purchase. I'll eat up anything this woman releases.

4 out of 5 stars Feisty.......2006-07-28

When I saw this in stores I thought this was an actual Feist album, new tracks and all. Sadly I was wrong - looks like I'll have to wait for that - although this is certainly not a bad way to kill the time. For the most part Feist shows off her indie roots by creating a playlist of quirky ambient remixes (plus a few new songs) of tracks from her 'Let It Die' LP. I am a huge fan of Feist and love virtually anything she has ever touched. The feeling is mutual on 'Open Season' although like any remix album there are flaws. Remixing the same song over and over again, for example, doesn't sit well with me. 'One Evening' and 'Gatekeeper' are remixed twice, while 'Mushaboom' is remixed FOUR TIMES. I mean, I love that song too but I don't need to hear four versions of it in one sitting. Plus, some of the remixes sound a little rushed, as if the label said 'guys we need to get this out as soon as possible... wrap it up', so DJ throws together some generic house beat and walks away. Do Right's mix of 'Gatekeeper' isn't very strong, neither is VV's 'When I Was A Young Girl'.

That being said this album is still worth a listen, and makes for great music while you're, say, entertaining guests or doing housework. And I'd much rather hear this in some clothing store than some eurotrash Bob Sinclair knock-off. It's background music at its best. VV's take on 'One Evening' is perhaps the best remix on the album, while the acoustic live version of 'Inside+Out' melts in your ears. k-os' appearance isn't memorable but it's an interesting beatbox-generated loop. The new tracks probably just didn't make the cut from 'Die' but 'Snow Lion', 'Tout Doucement', 'The Simple Story' and 'Lovertits' are still gold compared to most of the garbage in circulation these days.

One thing that I hope this album accomplishes is more exposure for Gonzales. The two tracks he features on are money and, of course, he is the brain behind 'Let It Die' so he deserves some cred. The man is genius and having heard rave reviews about his performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and with a songstress like Feist to compliment his studio work, we can only assume great things are in his future.

5 out of 5 stars NYC SKA IS GREATEST........2006-03-23

Cannot believe that there has passed almost a decade since the release of "Open Season," and it is still at par with any Ska production of 2006. This CD is simply brilliant. Among all steller tracks, my favorite is "Lieutenant." This song itself worths checking this cd out, it has every vibe that NYC ska offers, from the killer Ruggiero's organ to the smoother Django's voice, not to mention the chilling Hillyard's tenor. If you never discovered the beauty of Lieutenant, better pick this CD up! NYC SKA is the best.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC IN BOTH SKA AND MUSIC.......1999-10-14

It's hard to sum up all the accolades I'd like to splurge out; to be perfectly blunt, this album (as well as their follow-up, Back With a New Batch) is one that defines modern (and even traditional) ska and proves that even in the bland banality of the '90s, originality and genius is still alive. Jeff "Django" Baker is a mastermind, and Vic Ruggiero is one of the most amazing musicians to come around ever in popular music (and, trust me, i've heard a lot of music)!
