5 out of 5 stars Live in Hawaii.......2007-01-10

In true form, Jimmy does not disappoint his fans. I was glad to see that he used local talent in his show in Hawaii for both music and dance. He puts extra little twists to the tunes to make them appropriate for the venue that Hawaii residents or visitors will appreciate. Thank you Jimmy for all the years of fine Parrot Head music and performances.

5 out of 5 stars Parrot Heads UNITE!.......2006-11-03

Now mind you I am not a Parrot Head, but I do LOVE Jimmy Buffett. He reminds me of the Florida Keys and my vacation. Everytime I hear him, I think of sun and water. This CD is great!! Can't wait to get his new one!

3 out of 5 stars Like Listening to Your Parents' Beach Party.......2006-07-16

This is a solid career overview of Buffett's music, and a perfect souvenier for anyone who's ever attended one of his concerts. You get all the hits played very well, plus some surprises like "Jolly Mon" and "In the Shelter." The steel drums give the music a tropical dimension, and the oustanding musicianship shows Buffett and Company are well-deserving of their rabid following.

However, "production" (or lack thereof) might sink this party boat for many listeners. A disclaimer on the back of the packaging promises the performance "has not been altered in any way," and there is no doubt of this - to the point that the CD doesn't sound as if it was mastered or equalized. This may appeal to a music lover's purist instincts, but it's jarring for listeners unfamiliar with soundboard recordings (there's no wondering why I found a used copy of this disc only weeks after its initial release). Also featured here is a startling amount of breathless and off-key singing, flubbed solos and other mistakes that used to get doctored out of "official" live releases.

Problems aside, there are elements to the CD that are very charming and fun. "Why Don't We Get Drunk," for example, is played on ukeleles, and an overall party atmosphere prevails throughout. Plus, Buffett's between-song banter reveals a well-traveled man who knows how to connect with his audience. I would recommend this set to someone who has seen Buffett and wants a soundtrack to that experience. But if you simply want to have all of his hits in one place, stick with one of his multiple best-of's. For a more listenable live document, go with "You Had to Be There."

2 out of 5 stars Jerry Garcia he ain't.......2005-11-14

I really hate to give such a low rating to any Jimmy Buffett album. His music has brought a lot of happiness into my life and made some of the hard times easier to deal with, and I love almost all of his songs. But his recent series of "Live in..." CDs really doesn't make the grade. Why not? For one thing, he already had three terrific live albums, which encompassed different points of his carer and did a great job of it. That alone made the new ones unnecessary unless he did something unique with them, which he didn't. Also, the performance on "Live in Hawaii," at least, isn't that impressive. He hits quite a few wrong notes and often sounds downright bored, and most of the songs sound awfully thin compared to the original versions. I can't speak for whether the other CDs in the series are any better, because after listening to this one, I have no intention of buying them.

If you only have it in your budget for one live Buffett album, "You Had To Be There" can't be beat. For a more representative cross-section of his career as a whole, "Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays" is great. Unless you're a completist, don't bother with these newer ones.
