The debut release by this Canadian duo could easily have been billed as the latest from Ron Sexsmith, who writes all the material here and sings all the leads. Yet the harmonies of producer Don Kerr, a frequent Sexsmith sideman, are more than background vocals, as the two strive for a brotherly blend reminiscent of the Everlys and the Louvins. The arrangements are largely acoustic, the melodies often folkish, from the mandolin-driven "Listen" that opens the CD through the country strains of "Reacquainted." Poppier fare such as the dreamy "Chasing Forever" and "Counting on Time" pay homage to the brothers Davies of the Kinks, whose reveries of sunny days and village greens find kindred spirits here. Few can match Sexsmith for melancholy, and the lovesick "Only Me" reflects his bittersweet best. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars A modern day Everly Brothers kind of tone to the CD.......2007-01-24

Most songs are beautifully orchestrated, as Sexsmith is known to do.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Ron Sexsmith fans rejoice!.......2006-12-09

Ron Sexsmith has been a brilliant, stellar exception to the dull and shopworn landscape of popular musical artists for a long time now, and continues his streak of gorgeous, masterful music on this disc. Not only is Ron in his best form, perhaps better than ever before, he also has teamed up with an artist, Don Kerr, who's so compatible they may as well be twins separated at birth.

Ron's heavenly voice is there, as are the soaring, tuneful and memorable melodies, and lush, rich guitar work, all to complement lyrics that are at once sweet, gentle, insightful, and bitterseet. The music flows like a river of diamonds from start to finish. Not one track or moment is less than lovely.

If you have been liking Ron Sexsmith, rush to get this outstanding work of art. If you have never really tried his music, this is a great place to start, with Don Kerr's voice complementing Ron's so beautifully. And if you fall in love with this disc, which you likely will, get the rest of his music. It's all of piece, all beautiful.

Regards,

Tom B

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful album from one of the world's best songwriters.......2006-08-27

It's incredible how astonishingly consistent and prolific Ron Sexsmith has been over the past decade. I keep worrying that the pace at which he puts out albums is going to dilute their quality, but it certainly hasn't happened yet. Everything he's put out since "Ron Sexsmith" is worth owning, and each contains at least a handful of masterpieces. How an artist this accessible and talented hasn't found more than a cult audience is beyond me. Anyway, Destination Unknown is one of his loveliest albums. Even the songs that don't rank with his best have inched their way into my consciousness, and the great ones -- to my ears, One Less Shadow, Raindrops in My Coffee, Diana Sweets, and Tree-Lined Street -- are genuinely timeless. Maybe a few others could belong in that list, depending on my mood. The few that don't do as much for me are still melodically inventive and worth listening to, but the lyrics tend a little bit towards sentimentality and self-pity; I'm sure, however, that other people feel differently.

I tried to get one of my hipster friends into Sexsmith, but something seemed to put him off. I think he heard the surface prettiness and assumed that Sexsmith was somehow a safe bland coffeehouse kind of talent, who couldn't possibly have anything exciting to offer. But daring goes beyond throwing in distortion and computerized skronks, or spouting lyrics that express shopworn alienation; it also means looking deeply into yourself and caring enough about your craft to keep working until you cast that state of mind into something permanent and honest. A bubbly tune like Diana Sweets, for example, is actually a hard look at the simultaneous pointlessness and irresistibility of nostalgia. It takes a great deal of courage to look inside yourself and pull that out. Perhaps Sexsmith will never have a large audience -- although I certainly hope he does, because he deserves it -- but anyone that really listens to these songs closely will carry them around for a lifetime. Buy it, you lucky few, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely New Set from Mr. Sexsmith.......2005-10-15

I've been enamored with Sexsmith's work ever since the classic "Blue Boy" and bought every one of his albums, over time, from the moment I heard that album.
This is not to say that every one of his recordings has been as packed with exquisite melodies and thoughtful lyrics as the above-mentioned treasure, in Sexsmith's albums there have always been beauties to relish but not quite another album which held my admiration from beginning to end.
That said, this collaboration with Don Kerr -Ron's longtime companion on the road and in studios- may be the one that reaches such heights.
Although the instrumentation here is far more spare than in "Blue Boy," consisting primarily of guitars, an occasional cello and some drums, the quality of the writing is impeccable and the mood the two voices conjure up will remind you of his signature romantic touch.
The songs, by and large, are tunes originally written for "Retriever," this album's predecessor, and the idea of recording them as a duo grew out of playing and harmonizing them while traveling from concert to concert. As far as the general feel given to them, it is mainly the result of Sexsmith's admiration for the Louvin Brothers and the Everly Brothers, which will bring memories from both famous groups without ever making you suspicious of plagiarism. Sexsmith is a remarkable composer and singer in his own right, and Kerr provides the perfect vocal counterpoint.
It is hard to single out songs because the compositions are consistently good and the performance throughout is quite faithful to the influences I alluded to before. Still, "Tree-Lined Street," "Counting On Me," "Only Me," "Raindrops In My Coffee" or "Chasing Forever" are sufficient proof of this album deserving a place in your collection.
So, if you already like Sexsmith and you could use some beautiful music early in the morning, before the world revs up to break-neck speeds, this may be just what you've been waiting for.
Lovely music, where "lovely" means beautiful, tender and unconcerned with what people might think of the plain joy of singing pretty songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songsmith.......2005-10-11

This is the first CD from Ron Sexsmith I have bought, and it will certainly not be the last one. Accompanied by two guitars and some occasionally drums, the result depends heavily on the voices and the songs. And I must say they are both beautiful. I hear influences, like Paul McCartney, Everly brothers, Louvin brothers and even an early Nils Lofgren. But the songs stand on their own, and it is typically a CD you play when you want to hear something beautiful and timeless. Highlights for me are 'Counting on time' and the absolute killer....'Only me'.

I loved this Cd soooo much. I bought it, and the next week, i took it to my friends house, and played it, a while later, i took it out of her stereo, and placed it upsidedown on her desk. BIG mistake!!! we then proceeded to light candles a such, when she knew she wasn't allowed to, then we had to smother the flmae, and the smoke went everywhere. then she sprayed perfume around the room, and it landed on my wonderful Destination unknown CD! I WAS SO MAD! She runined it, and I now have to go buy another one! But yes..as I was saying, awesome CD. Probably my favourite out of all of their Cd's, and i think they'll keep getting better!

5 out of 5 stars Pop Punk at its Best.......2004-11-11

Mest is definatley one of my favourite bands and all of thier albums are great. They are at the top of the list as far as the pop punk genre goes. The music is fast paced and extremely catchy. If you like Yellowcard, The Starting Line, Green Day, Good Charlotte, Blink 182 and New Found Glory then I recommend Mest.

Destination Unknown is a truly amazing cd and deserves to be played loud and often. It is full of up beat catchy songs. The tunes all have the capability of getting stuck in your head. Sure, a lot of the songs are about girls and brokendown relationships, but what do you expect listening to a group of young guys singing about what's going on in their lives.

Some of my favourite songs on the album are:
Opinions
Cadillac
It's Over
Reason
Mother's Prayer

If you liked Mest's first album then you will definately enjoy this one also. All 14 songs are great, no filler included. I highly recommend Destination Unknown and if you like this one you will be sure to enjoy their other two albums also!

This CD is fabulous! I've been a fan of Patrick's for many, many years now and his success has been a long time coming. This album is for anybody who loves heartfelt, soulful, well-written music. It reaches out to all genres, from country to blues, to rock and roll. Trust me, you WON'T be disappointed when you purchase this. Now I'm just waiting for his next show so I can enjoy this in person! A++++

5 out of 5 stars Grab this cd.......2003-11-11

This album shows true talent from all aspects. Patrick's songwriting, his musical talent, incredible vocals, and the choices he made for back up vocals- Mark Bryan's producing, and to top it all off, a show live is at least as good as listening to this cd. Patrick is a very nice guy, and he obviously appreciates all the people who have helped him along the way. The music samplers on this site are good choices, but Faithless Heart, Maybe Tonite, Scared to Dream are songs you can't miss out on.

I believe his debut CD has the potential of having several major hits. The first time I heard his music was when he opened for Hootie & the Blowfish. About half way through his set I went and purchased the CD. I have been listening to it for 2 months now and enjoy it just as much today as the first time I played it. It's worth every penny! Patrick is a very talented musician & songwriter. It's just a matter of time before he is at the top of the charts.

If you're looking for the SAX riffed song they're playing in Europe, this is not it. This is nothing but cheesy techno remixes. There's not one SAX riff in all the cuts! I had to bite the bullet on this one and buy the 'Destination Calabria' single. That's where the SAX riff and Crystal Water's vocal is.

4 out of 5 stars Don't overlook this! CRYSTAL WATERS on vocals!!!.......2005-04-15

Did you ever hear a Crystal Waters club track that wasn't housey, upbeat, and funky all in one? Well you still haven't if you've heard this track. It's definitely a signature Crystal Waters tune. If you're a fan of her stuff, don't pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Sun Ra.......2003-07-08

Very accessable for Sun Ra neophytes, this is a typical effort from the later stages of Sun Ra's career. There is an exhuberent version of Intersteller Lo Ways...the happiest version of this song I've heard. It sounds like everyone was having fun on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Courageous but saddening.......2000-07-29

Sun Ra recorded this live album near the end of his life. Almost anyone else would have retired at this point. His illness had clearly taken a toll on his playing, although the rest of the Arkestra are in fine form here, playing familiar Sun Ra material with great skill and singing with energy. It sounds like they're having fun. However, the great tenor sax player John Gilmore is missing from this performance. Another negative is that at this point there was very little if any new material from Sun Ra. Everything here is a standard. So, this isn't an essential recording, and hearing it makes me feel a little sad that Sun Ra's so-called life on this planet has ended. We'll never replace him.

      Product Description

Voxbox is a self-titled debut album, written, mixed and mastered by Nevin S. Hersch. While encapsulating a wide variety of styles, Voxbox is held together by intricate production skills and attention to detail. Having 19 tracks and being almost 80 minutes long, this album wasn't a small project. The idea of Voxbox stemmed from Nevin's influences: Depeche Mode, Yaz(oo), Kraftwerk, Adult., Fischerspooner, Solvent, DMX Crew and The Soft Pink Truth. Missing Persons is an obvious influence, since their song "Destination Unknown" is the only cover song featured on the album. The album has a mostly dark feel from its lyrics, "My memory has been deleted," to its artwork, which is bound to get some attention: Mannequin photography from Nevin's own studio mannequins and vocalists, Annie (Lennox) and Carol (Channing). As for the remainder of the vocals, Nevin does them himself.
