There are few things more depressing than a goofy punk rock band that suddenly decides it needs to be taken seriously. Sum 41 did a brilliant job parodying corporate rock, pop and a large chunk of the '80s with breakthrough hit "Fat Lip." But over three albums, the Canadian band has unwittingly gravitated in that very direction. On Chuck, its hard to tell whether the quartet is poking fun at the platinum class or merely paying tribute by copping entire melodies and verses from some of MTV's biggest stars--Metallica's "Battery" on "The Bitter End" and Linkin Park's "One Step Closer" on "No Reason," respectively. More troubling, however, its formerly tongue-in-cheek awe for cheap metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest seems to have turned into a full-on admiration. That's clearly no laughing matter. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars What a compilation! Definitive indeed!.......2007-06-22

The title of this CD represents a tall order to fill. With a title like "The Definitive Collection" of one of the key progenitors of rock and roll, one expects a great deal. This CD delivers. The liner notes begin by stating that "Chuck Berry cooked up the basic recipe for rock n' roll." Berry was made a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, as one of the very first members--and justifiably so. As the notes continue, ". . .it was Berry who set the template for the songwriter-artist. . ."

Some of the major cuts:

"Maybellene" was recorded in 1955, one of his first major hits. Talk about class: Willie Dixon played bass. The thumping rhythm and driving rock beat makes this a quintessential Chuck Berry song. This song reached # 5 on the Pop Chart, making Berry a recognizable figure.

In 1956, "Roll Over Beethoven" Another great rocker: "Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news." An infectious beat and driving singing.

"Up in the mornin' and off to School,
Teacher teachin' the golden rule."

So "School Day" goes, with the expectation of a lot more fun once the School Day is done.

"Rock and Roll Music" (1957) has the estimable Willie Dixon and Fred Below supporting Berry. Another rollicking early rock song that set the stage for what was to follow.

More greats from 1957--"Sweet Little Sixteen," a teaser of a song with a compelling pace; also from 1957, one of the greatest rock songs ever--"Johnnie B. Goode." "Go, Johnnie, go, go."

A number of these songs were covered by the "British invasion." British groups, such as the Rolling Stones and Beatles, covered such songs as: "Roll over Beethoven," "Little Queenie," "Come on," and so on.

This CD contains 30 of Chuck Berry's greatest hits, from "Maybellene" to "My Ding-a-Ling." If anyone is unfamiliar with Berry's oeuvre, this is a great place to start. For those who appreciate his role in rock and roll, this is a good addition, to pull together some of his best works. A good compilation. . . .

Chuck Berry is one of my old favorites. I danced to his music when I was a teenager. This CD contained many of my favorites from back in the day such as Johnnie B. Goode and Almost Grown. Also, some of his less known music was introduced. Havanna Moon was a surprising musical treat.

4 out of 5 stars For the casual listener..........2007-04-03

...you won't find a package to beat this one. An inexpensive selection of Berry's biggest numbers. Definitely not "definitive" by any stretch, but a great record to throw in for a quick shot of one of the most important figures in rock/rhythm & blues history. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "...Tidewater four-ten-oh-nine...".......2007-03-18

I saw Dennis Miller on "The Tonight Show" one time and he said, "what planet are Brando and the Beatles from and why can't we find it?" I feel the same way about Chuck Berry. I guess it would be hard to explain to a Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears fan, but if you are a fan of good ol' rootsy, r&b influenced rock n' roll, you know in your soul that Chuck Berry is the savant.

How can a guy come up with those riffs? Those simple, yet poetic lyrics? One of his rivals was the output of the Brill Building writers, but that was a group of enlightened kids (influenced by Berry, among others) feeding off of each others energy and ideas. Maybe the closest "rival" was Buddy Holly. Here is a poor guy from St. Louis who even pushed Presley, not to mention how he (along with Holly) inspired the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

Bottom line: great sound, finally a great single disc overview of one of the greatest musical minds since 1950 and certainly one of the "Dead Sea Scrolls" if you are looking for the genesis of rock n'roll.

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fun but flawed.......2007-05-07

in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.

first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.

SCORE 5 out of 5

the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5

BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5

HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5

so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.

despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09

This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-31

This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14

The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16

I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.

The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.

Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.

Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wind Me Up, Chuck!.......2007-07-16

Chuck Brown is a Washington, DC institution and our "National Treasure!" This man started "Go-Go!" He is 70+ years old and still manages to stay current with what is happening on the music scene today. For those who don't know what "Go-Go" is, it is a genre of music (a sort of sub-genre of funk music) that originated in Washington, DC. Although there were several bands that contributed to the evolution of Go-Go, Chuck Brown developed most of the characteristics or hallmarks of the style. The song "Bustin' Loose"(1978)...that was Chuck! The song reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in February/March 1979. Several mainstream artists have sampled Go-Go songs or used Go-Go beats (Salt 'N Pepa - "My Mic Sounds Nice", L.L. Cool J - "Rock the Bells", Grace Jones - "Slave to the Rhythm." Go-Go Band EU (Experience Unlimited) received international exposure when they were featured in Spike Lee's movie "School Daze" performing their song [...].

My husband and I were having lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl today and "Chuck Baby" started playing on the jukebox. Everyone in the place was bobbing their heads! People were still singing the song long after it had ended! I left Ben's and went straight to store to buy this CD! As we say in DC, "This joint is CRANKIN'!" This is the serious party/driving CD. It was produced by Carl "Chucky" Thompson who has produced for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Biggie, NAS, Faith Evans, etc. If you are not familiar with Chuck Brown's music, this would be a wonderful introduction for you. The CD, like Chuck's live concerts, will not disappoint. My favorites are "Chuck Baby" (Chuck's daughter KK has a really nice flow on this one), "Theme from 'The Godfather'", and "Block Party." Maryland native and most-able crooner, Raheem DeVaughn makes an appearance on the song "Eye Candy." We (the DC Metro area) pledge our allegiance to Chuck Brown! He rocks!

I recall listening to Chuck Brown back in the day when I was introduce to GO Go music back in college. So to hear him with new material was great. It has been nearly 20 years after I first heard his music and all I can say " it's off the hook"!
I huried up to buy this copy at the local music stores but all were sold out or they just didn't know how big this man music is to the now adults that grew up liastening to his music back in the 80's.

Music in the Liquid Mind series changes little from one recording to the next--good news for contented fans of the long-running bliss-out series created by keyboardist/composer Chuck Wild. The former Missing Persons keyboardist and studio colleague of famed producer Ken Scott (David Bowie, Supertramp) has evolved into a premier space-music specialist whose relaxing, gentle soundscapes artfully evoke the softer side of the cosmos. His eighth Liquid Mind installment, subtitled Sleep, is a lovely, slo-mo spacewalk through serene, gravity-free realms that consistently yields a sustained sense of well-being and calm. Deserving of a spot at the head table with ambient music's most sophisticated sound designers, Wild creates slowly unfolding, universe-at-rest textures using few of the supplemental sonic dimensions (space winds, angelic voices) often employed by fellow stargazers Jonn Serrie and Jon Jenkins. And he sidesteps the small dramas and mysterious fractals that sometimes add a hint of uncertainty to the otherwise like-minded works of Brian Eno or Harold Budd. Happily, you'll hear no new-agey crystal bowls or plucked harps, either; just a warm, resonant, faintly classical glow skillfully designed for relaxation and peace. Pull up a cloud, lie back, and enjoy. --Terry Wood

Album Description

"Mr. Wild successfully creates a soothing and calming atmosphere which could be an excellent addition to one's nightly sleep regimen." William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. Director of Sleep Disorders and Research Center Stanford University School of Medicine

"The titles of the first seven Liquid Mind albums have honored values important to me on my life's journey. This eighth album honors the need in all of us for a healthy and regenerating rest each night. I hope you'll enjoy my music, and use it in good health." Chuck Wild

5 out of 5 stars Puts me to sleep........2007-07-22

If I listen to this lying down, I only make it to the 2nd or third section. Very relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Drift consciously into sleep without realizing it........2007-06-27

Liquid Mind music is truly universal. And while I may not be able to name which album a certain piece comes from; the music on each CD seems to encourage the feeling or state of mind named in the title. This album, Sleep, does help me drift of to sleep. The other albums, likewise, support Meditation, lifting of the Spirit, and other states of mind. Perhaps they are inter-changeable; in any event, this album's selections help me relax and prepare for sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for napping.......2007-05-18

Some new age music albums get it; some don't. I do not buy new age music to hear third rate melodies (that quickly become annoying), annoying beats and clicks, drumming, chanting, etc. I buy it to help me relax and chill out. Sometimes I use it to filter out noise from outside my home or in my office. Sometimes I use it to help me sleep. Good sleep music should lull - it shouldn't demand attention. It should draw you in enough so that you will stop fretting about your problems at work or at home but not so much that your mind is anticipating a predictable melodic pattern. Liquid Mind has figured out how to do what new age music should do. This album has gently changing tones that ease in and out, cascade, and encircle the listener. Think of it as pleasant white noise. This is definitely sleep inducing. If you feel like youa re sleep deprived but are too wired to nap, put this on your headphones and just listen. You won't be able to focus on any sound in particular - there is enough shifting to keep you from doing that. But you will find yourself being lulled into dreamland. Very good.

5 out of 5 stars Really helps put me to sleep.......2007-05-07

I have no trouble staying asleep, but for years I've struggled to fall asleep. I've used several relaxing CDs, some commercial and some I've put together myself. Most of them helped, but eventually they had less effect, so I changed to another one for a few months. I started using Liquid Mind VIII recently, and it has easily been the most effective sleep CD I've used. Most nights I'm asleep by the fourth or fifth track (15-20 minutes, which is very good for me).

Other than the obvious fact that the music is fairly nondescript and very soothing, I don't know why it works so well, but it does.

Highly recommended if you have problems falling asleep.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely makes you drowsyzzz zzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-04-21

I happened to hear this on XM Radio in the car. Oh my goodness. This is not the thing to be listening to while driving. I happened to have on the Vision (New Age music) channel and this came on in broad noon daylight as I was running some errands. Within minutes, I was as calm as a lake on a windless day and heading for nod-off time. Change the channel..but quick, make a note of the album.

I tried it (safely) at home. It has a warning; do not operate machinery or drive while listening to this cd. It does really work. I put it in the cd player in my alarm clock and put it on low before I went to bed. I think I fell asleep in 4 minutes.

The trick is the slow tempo. The music is almost complete phrases, no discernable tune but also not simply noises that sound spacey.

If you want something effective to calm yourself during yoga, to sleep to or to calm a fussy baby or put down the toddlers, this is it. Zzzzzz

Only in America could an album like this have come together: Eva Cassidy, a young vocalist who, had she lived, might have gone on to become her generation's favorite song interpreter, trading verses with Chuck Brown, seasoned godfather of the D.C. underground funk movement known as go-go. By the time this was recorded in 1992, the go-go trend had long since peaked for Brown, while the twentysomething Cassidy was still an unknown local session vocalist. Yet, on this set of standards, the two collaborate as if they were picking up where they'd left off decades earlier, from easy-riding versions of "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" to near-definitive renditions of "Over the Rainbow" and "Dark End of the Street." And while it's easy to focus on the posthumously acclaimed Cassidy, Brown's haunting solo turn on "You Don't Know What Love Is" suggests that unjustly overlooked talents are still making music in the shadows of our nation's capital. --Bill Forman

3 out of 5 stars Is It Just Me?.......2007-06-12

Probably. I'm assuming no one could be so apparently tacky that there must be a meaning to this album's title beyond the obvious. If so, it's over my humble head.

As to the music itself... The Eva Cassidy movement is so fervent it's tough to criticize anything she's ever done, but this is a very mixed collection of cuts that doesn't really even belong inside one jewel box. Three or four absolute pearls in a slurry of tired standards performed so perfunctorily they sound like they were taped on the Catskills circuit in the 1950s. Nothing wrong with Eva's voice, or Chuck Brown's for that matter, but you can smell the mothballs on much of the song selection and non-arrangements.

2 1/2 stars for the pearls.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you chills ~! .......2007-04-26

Eva's voice is so pure and pristine . It will give you chills and goosebumps every time you hear it .
She truly was the greatest female singer ever - her passion and pathos is unparalled . Her rendition of " God Bless the Child" is the best ever ! It will bring tears to your eyes .

This pairing is incredible - I have always been a sucker for a good duet and these two are superb and the musicians are first rate also . I guarantee you will love this gem of a CD !

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2006-08-27

Only some eighteen months ago did I hear about Eva from a young lady serving in a record store but already she is my favourite female artist. Her range is fantastic and to borrow the words from another reviewer (as I am not good at this) she has a "mix of aching clarity and rich warmth". In this particular album which is one of my very favourites she and Chuck Brown collaborate in an amazing way. They are just so amazingly excellent together and I thoroughly recommend all of the songs. Eva pounds it out but there are moments when her sensitivity and warmth also shine through. Chuck has a deep rich voice and I hope he does more of this type of work.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Recording - Flawless Performance.......2006-05-03

This is one of the best CD's in my collection. It's great pleasure to listen to world class musicians who can do it all and hats off to the audio engineers to capture this timeless material. Chuck Brown is one of the best blues singers I have heard and Eva Cassidy - a huge talent. If you are considering this CD, you have come to the right place. You will be very happy about your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Eva? Simply the Best.......2004-06-23

Eva Cassidy? I have all her albums. This was the first one- and my favorite. There aren't enough superlatives in the language to describe the talent this woman had. I am seventy-two years old, and I have listened to all the great ladies of jazz for sixty of those years. Although there are some good young jazz voices around these days, Eva had no peers. She was a great artist who belongs at the top with Ella, Sarah, and Billie. I lament her passing, and treasure the recordings she left us. The duets with Chuck Brown are outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't it though.............2005-10-07

I remember hearing the song "Feels so Good" every once and a while as a child in the late 70s/early 80s, and it's one of those songs that simply stays with you. Fast forward a couple decades (holy cow! almost thirty years!!!), it sounds as good today as it did so many years ago. The entire cd is outstanding. I just wish the Theme from "Side Street" was a few minutes longer. Definitely a must have.

2 out of 5 stars Feels Sorta Good.......2005-10-04

The only problem I've ever had with Chuck Mangione is that he plays sharp all the time. Other than that- I love his stuff. I also agree that the title track is fab, but especially the guitar solo is stellar. He, unfortunately, gets cut off right as he's starting to cook. Quite frustrating!

5 out of 5 stars Chuck's my 1st introduction of Jazz.......2005-01-15

This is definitely my favorite albums and the first jazz album I got inspire and influenced in jazz. Chuck Mangione was the first jazz endeavor I ever experienced when I was a child. I actually love his playing and love how he sounds. He does his men playing along with him Grant Geissman, Charles Meeks, James Bradley Jr. and Chris Vadala. they all sound great knahmmean.

I luv every song that he did on this album and this is definitely going into the Jazz Hall of Fame or the Top List of Jazz Albums.

I recommend the following albums:

1. Miles Davis- Kind of Blue

2. Maynard Ferguson- Conquistador

3. Herb Alpert- Rise

4. Freddie Hubbard- The Best of Freddie Hubbard, First Light, Above & Beyond, Hub-Tones, Straight Life, Life Flight, etc.

5. Chet Baker- The Best Thing for You/You Can't Go Home Again

6. Grover Washington, Jr.- Winelight, Come Morning, Mister Magic, The Best of Grover Washington, Jr.

7. Marvin Gaye- The Best of Marvin Gaye (Motown Anthology Series)

8. Miles Davis- Live Around the World, Tutu, Doo-Bop, Aura, The Man with the Horn, Bitches Brew, etc.

9. Marvin Gaye- Dream of a Lifetime, Romantically Yours, Vulnerable (3 great final releases from the legendary Marvin Gaye)

10. Barry White- All-Time Greatest Hits, The Ultimate Collection, Can't Get Enough, The Icon is Love, The Man is Back, etc.

Just to name a few list I can recommend to this album. He sounds a bit like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Donald Byrd, Art Farmer whom I listen to the most.

5 out of 5 stars Feels So Good!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-30

This album is the most famous Chuck Mangione album, and one of his best. His beautiful flugelhorn playing, his magnificent leadership, and his brilliant song writing skills all make this album a true masterpiece. Everything in this album flows! Mangione clearly knew how to write music with feeling, and boy could he play! His band, sure had something to do with the magic of this album.
Chris Vadala:
On tenor and soprano saxophones, alto, and c flutes, and piccolo. He is without a doubt, one of the best reedists Mangione ever had in his band lineup. Gerry Neiwood was the other master! Chris Vadala's playing is so unique and his sound is extraudinary, and soulful. His magic adds so much more to the music of this album. His solo on Feels So Good is magnificent. I still find myself humming it over and over, hours after I've played it.
Grant Geissman:
On acoustic, electric, classical, and 12 string guitars, Grant Geissman, just might of played one of the greatest guitar solos in jazz history. Yes, you guessed it; the solo on Feels So Good. It's a wonder, he didn't spend hours and hours working it out, since it's so melodic.
Charles Meeks:
Funky, "Meet Man" Meeks. One of the grooviest bass players ever! He adds some hippness to the album.
James Bradley Jr:
Every drummer should learn from this master. Although some might not call him a master at this time, because he was only 18 years old. Well accomplished, who had a role in Cool Hand Luke when he was 7, was a child prodigy on the drums. He cools it down a little bit, on this album, but makes up for it, in color. Some nice conga playing on 11th Commandment.
The first song, Feels So Good, is Mangione's classic! Still, after 25 years, it's still loved by pop and jazz fans alike.
Here, the way it originally was issued, the full 9 minute version. With the edited version, so much magic was lost, and until this day, gone forever. Next up, Maui Waui. One of the most melodic songs ever; Chris Vadala's flute playing adds to the warmth and beauty of the piece. Theme From Side Street, is one of the greatest songs by Mangione, ever! The melody, the hook, the groove, it's all there. Number 4 is, Hide And Seek. Another classic. Great solos by all! I particularly love Vadala's soprano solo, and Geissman's guitar solo. Last Dance, is another pretty piece. It has a beautiful acoutsic guitar solo, by Grant Geissman. The last piece, 11th Commandment; another classic. Charles Meeks, and James Bradley Jr. are featured soloists here. Meeks's bass solo is really blusey and down to earth. After some splap bass by Meeks, the piece picks up. James Bradley Jr's solo is perfect for this particular piece. Not too over powering, not at all, boring, just right! This is a classic album, and is still enjoyed by many. This album put Mangione on the map, and if you enjoy any fusion, or early contemporary jazz, you'll love Mangione's music!

5 out of 5 stars Raising spirits.......2007-06-27

This Liquid Mind album is one of three that I currently own. When I put it on with the intent to "lift my Spirit," it does. I relax, sort out my thoughts, relfect upon positive aspects in my life, and that rejuvenates my spirit and mood. I intend for that to happen when I play this album, and the music definately provides an atmosphere of, and not a distraction to what I choose to think about. I think that "Spirit" is aptly named.

5 out of 5 stars Feeds the Spirit.......2006-11-03

This is a great way to begin the day! I can put this on and have my cup of tea, and get in touch with my inner spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for relaxation.......2006-05-26

Just what I was looking for. Perfect for massage, calming down or just relaxing before bed. Something about it helps me breathe better.

5 out of 5 stars sound healers dream!.......2005-10-19

This review may only speak to a very few people, but nonetheless, I would have liked to seen a review like this somewhere in my neverending search for sound healing music. I use many forms of music in my healing sessions, and the LIquid Mind series are hands down the best. I primarily use these CD's through a vibroacoustic soundtable, and the overtones are just right. Constant and not too jarring. The music penetrates into the body in a mellow and flowing way. The vibration of the music is subtle yet powerful. If you are looking for good sound table music, this collection is what you are looking for, as well as anything by Klaus Wiese or Crystal Voices crystal bowl cd's.

5 out of 5 stars Melt Away Stress.......2005-09-03

This is the first cd I've bought in the Liquid Mind series, but after hearing this one, I'll buy more. The music is calming and soothing; great to fall asleep by which I often do. It lulls you into a peaceful state of relaxation, letting your mind drift away from the cares of the day. It makes me think of floating on a cloud. I would highly recommend this cd for anyone with a busy, stressed-out life.

Album Description

"...In an agitated stream, it is difficult to see a reflection. In a calm lake, that reflection is clear...."

Liquid Mind VII: Reflection, the seventh in Liquid Mind 's unique ultra-slow relaxation albums, ebbs and flows with a peaceful and introspective elegance. Science has proven that our minds and bodies harmonize with the tempo of our surroundings, and that slow music may cause a general relaxation of muscle tension. This beautiful album is "musical healthcare" at its best: ideal for sleeping, meditation, anxiety and anger management, as a background to Reiki, Yoga, massage, and to enhance all healing activities. Parents and teachers find it useful to quiet hyperactive kids, veterinarians use the music to help animals recovering from surgery, mothers give birth to it, students study to it, artists paint and writers write to the musical backdrop of Liquid Mind. This subtle music has a way of opening our hearts and minds to our true selves.

5 out of 5 stars Meditative Masterpiece!.......2007-06-09

Looking for great meditation music? Listen to Liquid Mind's assortment of musical meditation arrangements! I purchased Liquid Mind III years ago it's music became almost sacred to myself and other family members and friends. So, I purchased the entire series! Need I say more?!!!!
The music has a great "trademark" sound but each CD has it's own uniqueness. I found it was great anytime you need "background" music. I loved each and every CD by Liquid Mind and will treasure the music always. Thanks to Chuck Wild and all involved in the production of Liquid Mind!

3 out of 5 stars ok massage music.......2007-03-31

It's a little slow and boring for my taste, but it provides for constant airy sound. Typical spa music.

5 out of 5 stars JUST MELT.......2007-02-06

When the day is through and nothing is left but the thoughts of the day that you wish would go away put on this music. Close your eyes, your mind, and melt away on the soft liquid sounds of this calming energy. IT is so soothing I can forget my noise filled mind and find a cloud to stretch out onto and just be......nothing

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2007-01-17

I always tried to relax by listening to classical music. Some classical is relaxing, but it can change tempo and volume often which I find distracting. This is much more calming then anything I've ever found. We have two of these cd's -- Reflection and Unity. I use it in the kitchen, or while I'm reading at bedtime. My 10-year-old listens to one at bedtime to help him calm down. I really love these cd's.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect CD for Massage.......2006-04-14

As a massage therapist, it is really tough to find appropriate music for a session. This CD hits the mark. No singing, chanting, or other distracting bird calls. Just pure melodious tunes that flow from one song to the other. My clients love this CD and you will too.

1 out of 5 stars GoGo needs to go!.......2007-07-24

First off, what the hell is gogo? and who the blue hell is chuck brown? America wants to know. I heard this gogo on the radio and thought vinilla ice made a comeback. I thought the dj couldn't spin the record stright. Who is chuck brown signed to? classical music sells more than gogo. I enven heard gogo been out for 30 years! chuck still lives with his mama! he sells his cassette tapes out the trunk. Overall, gogo just sucks! America also thinks this. Sucks, just like the wizards, the nationals, and the hockey team, if D.C. has one. D.C. isn't even a state. Just stop, please. America has been embarrased enough.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue retrospective of a true legend ! ! ! .......2006-08-23

People in the Maryland/DC area, and those around the world lucky enough to get into the area's "best kept secret" have long known who and what Chuck Brown is... and his influence on not only an entire genre of music, but countless other artists who've followed in his footsteps - - knowingly and unknowingly. And now, finally a retrospective that covers his entire career, from his ultra funky "Kool and The Gang"ish disco/hard core funk roots in the mid-70s (when as far as the rest of the world is concerned he had his "one hit wonder" Bustin' Loose even though the best was yet to come) - - all the way up to current times, where as "The Godfather of Go Go" he comfortably holds court, guitar in hand - - and even rappin' and out rappin' fans and follows barely a third of his age - - often backed by the P-Funk horns, and a who's who of Jazz, funk, go go players... the truth is Chuck Brown is a style, genre and persona all unto himself - - "good people" yet "wickedly funky"...

Though DC's go go music (which Chuck Brown created) never caught on like it should have, the truth is that if you listen to this CD and don't come out convinced that Chuck Brown epitomized the words "legend", "style" and "funkyness" -- you ain't nothing...

As an added bonus, to fans of Chuck's more "musical elements", this CD is proabably his most consistantly engineered and best packaged representation to date... you really get to hear his various bands over the years work out, and have to be amazed how he's always at the helm gushing with his distinct trademarks - - the non-stop beats, those slick and funky guitar lines, the ever popping bass and congas and his funky emcee-ing and stage bands that are always funner than fun and tighter than tight.

Though Chuck can and does travel the year, it is true that he's under-appreciated... and its ashame because I truly believe that if everyone in the world knew more about him music worldwide would be 100 times as good !

3 out of 5 stars The Best of Chuck Brown Review.......2006-08-21

I am a Chuck Brown Fan and have been one for years. I was not happy with the older songs that were included on thi sparticular album. I thought that there could have been other songs, from other venues, that could have been included on this particular CD. I still enjoy his music and am happy with the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE BEST OF THE ORIGINAL STYX.......2007-06-04

IF YOU ARE A STYX LOVER, YOU WILL LOVE!! THIS COLLECTION. THE COMPLETE FIRST THREE ALBUMS FROM WOODEN NICKEL MUSIC. THIS IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THEIR VERY BEST STUFF. MANY OF THESE SONGS THEY PERFORMED EVEN BEFORE THEY NAMED THEMSELVES STYX, AND THEY PLAYED AS A HOUSE BAND IN CHICAGO. I SAW THEM PERFORM THESE SONGS AT THE ORIGINAL PARIDISE THEATHER IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO 30 YEARS AGO, AND STILL AM BLOWN AWAY BY THEIR POWER AND MUSICAL TALENTS. SO MUCH GREAT MUSIC TO ENJOY.

5 out of 5 stars Styx - 'The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings' (Hip-O).......2007-05-21

Nicely assembled 2-CD, 35 track repertoire of early Styx. Essential for all fans of pre-platinum Styx. Some of these tunes I haven't heard in ages. Some truly memorable arena rock 'deep album cuts' to be fully taken in here. This 2-CD release draws from the first four Styx lp's, their self-titled ('72), 'Styx II' ('73), 'Serpent Is Rising' ('74) and 'Man Of Miracles' ('74). Songs that got me going were "Right Away", the rocking "Best Thing", their first-ever hit "Lady", "Young Man", "Rock 'N Roll Feeling" and "A Man Like Me". A must-have.

4 out of 5 stars The Roots of Styx, 70's classic.......2007-05-09

For starters if you are a total Styx fan this is a must have (Five stars for you). The album features the band's work before signing with A&M records. That would mean prior to Equinox and Tommy Shaw's debut on Crystal Ball and the Grand Illusion. But it does demonstrate all of James Young's hard rocking contributions to the early band and of course earlier Denis DeYoung ballads and Works. (Works meaning some really neat pipe organ and arrangements with a more clasical flavor).
These recordings are Remastered which is a big plus, because if you are familiar with the cd "The Best of Styx" the sound quality on it was dissappointing. But all the tracks on this new release are more brilliant and sound fine.
The most popular track on the recordings of course would be Lady, and it also features the harder rocking tunes I personally enjoyed like Southern Woman, You Need Love, Winner Take All, Witch Wolf, Man of Miracles, Rock and Roll Feeling, and I'm Gonna Make You Feel It.
In general the rest of the album is a trip down memory lane of the early seventies sound I remember as a kid. Heavy doses of electric organ and heavy Bass Guitar. The style typified by so many other bands around the same era like early REO Speedwagon and Yes. So if you love early 70's classic rock this would also be a Check it out.

2 out of 5 stars DON'T TAKE ANY WOODEN NICKELS..........2007-02-10

- This expression, first recorded in about 1915, was originally a warning from friends and relatives to rubes leaving the sticks in the great migration from rural areas to the big cities at the turn of the century. It was a humorous adjuration meaning beware of those city slickers...

Same thing applies here. Unless you are a DIE HARD STYX fan there is nothing here for you except a mound of pretentious mystical blatherings.

With the exception of Styx 2's well known "Lady" and the beautiful "A Day" on disc one, I cannot imagine why you would play the rest of this excrutiatingly preposterous record more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Early Wood.......2007-02-02

I'm not ready to forgive these guys for "Babe" or anything, but there is some nice stuff scattered across these two pre-A&M discs. Some of it's rather derivative, of course ("The Serpent Is Rising" appropriates the riff from Crimson's "Pictures Of A City," for example), and some of it just bland (their cover of The Knickerbockers' "Lies" is so straightforward it's a wonder why they bothered). But when it's good, it's really good: the elegiac "Father OSA," the lazy, hazy "A Day," the naughty "Grove Of Eglantine" (which lies "just south of man's delight, close to a soft flowing stream" - - that's the lowdown, see?) and the early, soulful "Right Away" are good examples of what Styx was about early in their career. And the mix of different lead vocalists ensures lots of variety. To be sure, the more progressive side of the band was always balanced with a more formally hard rock style, so there's something here for pretty much everybody who's willing to temporarily forget the radio-saturation of their A&M years. It's likely you haven't heard much from these four albums except the deservedly-a-smash "Lady," and a lot of it is better than anything Styx would later release (don't EVEN mention KILROY). And it's a shame they lost the late John Curulewski so early on (he'd stick around for only one more album, EQUINOX, the band's A&M debut) as he provided the band with much of what was so great in their material. As for his infamous "Plexiglass Toilet" - - well, those who love calypso but hate potty humor are going to have a little problem.
