You'll have to excuse Kyle Riabko for missing the prom. When not studying in front of a computer, the 17-year-old Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native spent his junior year of high school touring with the likes of John Mayer, Buddy Guy and Maroon 5, and recording a wildly ambitious full-length major label debut, Before I Speak, with guests Liz Phair and Robert Randolph. He not only writes the songs on the album, but also sings, and plays guitar and bass, making him the kind of overachiever that probably wouldn't be too popular with the Ashlee Simpson fans at school anyway. Fortunately, he's got bluesy, soulful songs like "Do You Right" and "Doesn't Get Much Better" to win him plenty of other dates. --Aidin Vaziri

The Winnipeg Sun
Saskatoon's Kyle Riabko is barely old enough to drive, but he's clearly in the express lane to world domination.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous First Effort.......2006-09-15

I am thoroughly enjoying this CD. From Do You Right to What Did I get Myself Into and Miss Behavin', Before I Speak and Paranoid these are very infectious tunes that make me want to hear more each time I listen.

Hope Kyle plays in my part of the world as I'd like to see him live.

This new artist and great album has gotten only minor publicity, while many inferior albums of recent years (The Killers' "Hot Fuss" comes to mind first for some reason) have gotten much more publicity. Where is the justice? This is one of those rare albums that you will like on first listen if you like soulfully sung, catchy popular music with a good beat. Is he the next (white) Stevie Wonder? Maybe. There is "something" pervasive about the lyrical subject matter that convinces me that this was indeed written by a virgin, as is appropriate for a 15-year-old, but it's still hard to believe that this was sung by such a youngun. Kyle's vocals are rich and soulful, and several songs like "Do You Right," "What Did I Get Myself Into," "Miss Behavin'," and "Teach Me," among others, are undeniably catchy.

3 out of 5 stars Canadian Soul.......2005-10-26

Why are all the reviews of this artist by "homers" from the Great White North. Where are all the American lovers of funk and soul?

Convince me this is a 17 year old. No way. How can someone that young have so much soul and emotion? Possessed by the ghost of some 70's funk and soul singer, he is. We can only hope his material continues to be this strong.

5 out of 5 stars Nice guy finishes first-we all win.......2005-09-19

We've much to be thankful for when it comes to our neighbors to the north, especially Kyle Riabko. At the tender age of 17 he has gifted us with a debut album that swings, croons and rocks. I first heard the immensely danceable "What did I get myself Into?" on the radio and was transfixed. Although the lyrics belie an insightful plea, "I didn't realize the compromise I put you through," the guitar and bass chops (all Kyle) will have you bouncing around the kitchen. This is a very contagious tune. "Miss Behavin'" is a delightfully nasty bit of hip-twisting teen angst that grooves and pops as if it were being played in the back of a low-riding Cadillac. The title track is a lyrically smart autobio of the sweat and vulnerability it takes to lay your life down in them grooves. I highly recommend this CD to those who walk on the other side of the mall when confronted by packs of teenagers-Kyle's got something to say and we should all take a minute to chill, groove and think. This kid is the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars It's not fair for someone this young to have this much talent!.......2005-08-16

I own hundreds of CDs, but I don't think I have ever before had this experience:
-Hear a song on internet radio from someone I have never heard of
-Click on the CD image and read a couple reviews
-Decide immediately to buy the CD
-Find that the entire disc is good, not just a couple of songs
This guy is fantastic -- the writing, the singing, the playing, the whole package. Well, almost; his lyrics betray his youth, but hey, he's got more time to mature before he hits 25 than anyone since Stevie Wonder. The comparisons with John Mayer will be inevitable; if you like Mayer's stuff, you will like this just as well.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful lyrics, screaming, and amazing sound.......2004-01-10

This CD is one of my favorites, and one of my favorite bands. Running From Dharma not only puts on an intense preformance, they deliver an outstanding sound on this CD. You will enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-12-21

Easily one of the best albums of 2002. Dharma's music swirls and transcends, lifting the listener up, making them feel like they are a part of something bigger than just themselves. A smooth blend of post-hardcore indie rock that will easily please fans of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Hot Water Music, and Sparta. Do yourself a favor and own this.

5 out of 5 stars you NEED this cd!.......2003-03-24

theres not one track on here thats not absolutely wonderful! its melodic, yet has a hard edge at the same time. the songs vary alot as you listen. the begining of a song may sound nothing like the end, and it keeps you interested in the music. this is one for all crowds...theres a little bit of everything on this cd...from borderline emo to thursday-ish screams. all around great cd.
