As the star of his own Showtime TV show, Chris Isaak plays a sly raconteur with perfect comic timing, but on his eighth album, he shows that he is still intent on continuing in the role of melancholy balladeer. With his movie-star good looks, affable personality, and string of celebrity girlfriends, it's increasingly hard to see him in as the perpetual loser in love, despite the convincing likes of "Cool Love" (Love is a flame / I just got burned again") or the mournful "Nothing to Say" ("Nothing to say now / Nothing to do / I feel my heart breaking and it's all because of you"). The real mystery is why his doctor hasn't given him a prescription for Paxil. Isaak momentarily breaks out of his funk with the adventurous and witty "Notice the Ring," which pays cheeky homage to the Contours' "First I Look at the Purse," and the beat-heavy, Beck-like "Always Got Tonight." I like Chris Isaak - and I have all his albums - but I can't listen to this one. It's just that bad. All the other albums have really strong songs - but these tunes are weak and lifeless...

I've spent many many hours listening to this man's music. He rocks, he sings sweet balads, does a little southwest fusion, and it's all done really well.

Many hours four-wheeling in Wyoming with his music; what a perfect combo (cowboys, wide-open spaces, mountains...). But he still sounds great in the city, too!

chris isaak continues to get better with age.......2005-10-19

i've always described chris isaak as elvis meets roy orbison. he's a modern day crooner who has become better with age. each album is generally better than the previous effort. imo, his latest, 'always got tonight' is his best yet and the album i felt he was capable of and have been expecting from him. it's his most solid, top to bottom, yet.

i think the switch from longtime producer, erik jacobsen, to new producer john shanks was a brilliant move and i told that to mr. isaak, himself, in person after one of his shows. now i've seen some "complaints" that this album is more accessible, poppier and has more hooks than ever before but i don't consider that a bad thing. i am *all about a good hook*, so what he accomplished on this album suited me fine. like i said, i feel it's his best yet. i'd like to see him work with john shanks again or even another producer, like rick rubin.

for a chris isaak album, i give it 5 stars. if i didn't grade on an "isaak curve", i would still give it 4 or 4.5 stars.
