Editorial Reviews

It's appropriate that this earnest, young quartet of rockers is signed to the label that squired Creed to multiplatinum superstardom. Like Creed, 12 Stones deliver accessible, middle-of-the-road, postgrunge rock throughout their formulaic debut. Having emerged from the small burg of Mandeville, Louisiana, they serve up songs that tap (albeit at times tritely) into the self-doubt and romantic woes of post-Ritalin teens ("Patiently waiting by the phone / Hoping that you will call me home"). The songs, though, are honest and deeply felt, especially when singer Paul McCoy summons a metallic growl and Eric Weaver's sinuous guitar yields memorable melodies and acute solos. The menacing drums and agitation of "My Life" make it a highlight; ditto the speedy, edgy rocker "Eric's Song" and the passionate "Soulfire." --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Good Customer Service and Good Product.......2007-03-12

12 Stones is truly a talented band and their music definitely has depth to it. I recommend this CD to those who love music that blends heavy metal rock and alternative.

5 out of 5 stars Grow some stones and buy this CD.......2006-10-21

When I hear a c.d. the first time and you love it , I think I will be burned out in a month or two but not with this c.d., I can not take it out of rotation. The other c.d. by 12 stones is just as good.
Outstanding in every way.

4 out of 5 stars Great First Effort.......2006-09-16

I was greatly impressed by the musicianship of the band. Paul McCoy has a great voice going from soft to screaming (and he can wail). The axe work is tremendous Eric Weaver understands when to go from clean and soft to hard and heavy and helps accentuate the underlying emotions of the songs. Kevin Dorr isn't just another of those thumping bass players and adds bass "melody" (for lack of a better word) to each song. Aaron Gainer pounds the skins into submission and adds that necessary rhythm element. I will definetly buy there next CD "Potter's Field".

3 out of 5 stars The problem here is I've heard it before..........2006-07-01

I bought this album for 'Broken' which is a great song. The problem I have with the rest of the album is that it's nothing special, it's nothing great, nothing that makes me want to take the effort to sort through my CD case to find the CD and put it in the player. Every song is generic, even 'Broken' is a bit plain but I just really like that song. The chorus's are just single words repeated over and over and thats annoying as all get out. The reviewer for Amazon said the lyrics were heartfelf and deep but I found this album to be the complete opposite EXCEPT FOR 'Running out of Pain' which I feel is a beautiful and heart touching song and I just wish that the rest of the album was worth gracing the same album as that one song. Anyways, thats just my humble opinion. I was dissapointed and it's made me bitter...

3 out of 5 stars OK, but..........2006-06-26

I wanted to like this album. I love heavy music (along the lines of Staind, Disturbed, Crossfade, etc), but there's just not enough Christian metal in the world today. So when I came across 12 Stones, I thought, "Hey! This is going to be awesome! A Christian heavy metal group on a major record label!" I'd already heard Paul McCoy on Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life", of course, and "Broken" had popped up on my internet radio stations a couple times, so I was pretty excited about this CD.

Granted, maybe my expectations were a little too high. Don't get me wrong...this is still a pretty good CD; it beats out a lot of other Christian stuff I could name. Paul McCoy has a great voice. But all the songs have the exact same sound, same drums, even similar lyrics. "Broken" is about the only track that stands out here. Everything else is just kind of mediocre, and it all runs together. By the last couple tracks, I was bored. It was disappointing.

I'm still willing to give 12 Stones another chance, but this CD, while decent, is a bit of a letdown (since I was expecting all the tracks to be the same calibre as "Broken", and they're not). Do what I did: borrow it from the library and give it a listen before buying.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Stones' best!.......2007-07-15

Don't pass this up regardless of what kind of a review you read. "Good Times, Bad Times" (Jaggers/Richards) is a formidable blues tribute (worth the price of the CD itself). Classic covers of "Around and Around" and "It's All Over Now." The Stones reveal their blues roots on this CD more than they do on any other and the material is more cohesive than that found on their first release. I count this as the fourth best of the Rolling Stones releases--Jagger is in his prime and Brian Jones makes his most significant contribution as a Stone on this CD. If you enjoy blues/rock, be sure to add 12 X 5 to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars 12x5 (least creative review title ever?).......2007-03-22

Clever moniker aside (12 songs by 5 guys. Get it?), this is probably the weakest of the Rolling Stones' first five discs. The lack of a strong a-side hurts - the highlights of the early Stones' discs were ALWAYS the a-sides, and of course this one, their second, is no exception. Okay, so It's All Over Now was their first UK #1, and it's got a cool dramatic opening riff and catchy, singalong chorus. That said, I don't really listen to it that often. Time is On My Side is a classic, but it's the only one here, at least to me. And the organ-and-harmonica driven instrumental 2120 South Michigan Avenue is bluesy fun. Now for the rest...
I'm sorry, but their cover of the Drifters' Under the Boardwalk is REALLY BAD. Nauseating, even. Ever hear their doo-wap haromines? No? Spare yourself. It's an absolute decable. The resident Chuck Berry cover, Around and Around, is on the boring side, as are the slew of other absolutely useless covers (Confessin' the Blues, If You Need Me, Suzie Q). And while some of the originals (Good Times, Bad Times, Congradulations) are unexpectedly folky, they're also quite dull. Others are more of the blues-rock that's the Stones' calling card (Empty Heart, Grown Up All Wrong). They too are quite dull.
I can't really see why anybody but an obsessive collector would see in 12x5 - Time is on My Side and It's All Over Now can both be found on numerous compilations. I guess you CAN find the all-too-rare 2120 South Michigan Avenue. But the rest is useless.

3 out of 5 stars Solid follow up, but..........2007-03-15

...not nearly as good as the debut or the following album. But there are some gems, like Around and Around, Confessin' the Blues, Time Is on My Side, Good Times Bad Times and It's All over Now. But there's too much filler in the second half, like Under the Boardwalk, Grown up Wrong, If You Need Me and Susie-Q, as well as Empty Heart from early on. For the hardcore Rolling Stone fan only.

5 out of 5 stars Time was on their side.......2007-02-02

Strong 2nd album in the U.S. and proof that they were not just another British invasion flash in the pan. The Stones are the Beatles ugly cousin and proud of it. Around and Around is their best rockin Chuck Berry cover only to be found here.

5 out of 5 stars rockin' stones.......2007-01-09

for anyone that thinks they know the music of the stones, but do not have this cd, you are in for a history lesson!.....the stones started out as a blues band and this album was the early stones at their best! be prepared for the experience......

5 out of 5 stars Their followup is just as good as the first!.......2006-11-12

Hey, you couldn't ask for anything more from 12 Stones. For their second release they stuck with what they do best. Good commercial rock. That however, doesn't make it bad by any means. Maybe if your sick of modern rock this won't do, but If you're like me and enjoy a lot of rock like this then I'm sure you'll find something on this album to enjoy. I liked pretty much every track here. Still, because it doesn't offer a new sound that does hold it back slightly but it still doesn't take away from the music. Hey, if it sounds good, it's good. My favorite tracks would probably be "Shadows", "Waiting For Yesterday", "Bitter", and "3 Leaf Loser".

    1. Shadows - 10/10
    2. The Last Song - 10/10
    3. Far Away - 9.5/10

    9. Stay - 10/10
    10. Waiting For Yesterday - 10/10
    11. In Closing - 9/10

    Overall: 96% A

I'd have to say I think 12 Stones were able to pull off an even better album than the first. The first though still has a couple tracks that surpass anything on this album though and that's probably why I still think the self-titled comes close. All around their second release is pretty solid and will please fans of the first record as well as anyone who enjoys modern rock.

5 out of 5 stars Getting better with each release!.......2006-09-16

I liked this one better than there first (which was great). Kevin Dorr's replacement in the line-up by Greg Trammell hasn't hurt them probably since Kevin's still collaborated in writing all the songs. Great tempo and mood changes in the songs. I like music that can make you feel something and just doesn't sound great and this CD fits the bill. Keep rocking 12 stones!! I look forward to your next!

3 out of 5 stars Good Sound Bad Songs..........2006-05-15

This is 12 Stones second album and it's not as good as the first, well, the sound the music part was. most of the songs were not for me and they had no rythme to them or meaning, but here are some songs that i did like.

    1. Shadows
    2. Last Song
    3.Bitter.

    4 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2006-04-29

Eager to shake compairisons to the band creed, 12 stones offered up "potter's field", a 2004 rock release with more of a melodic alternative metal approach. The band comes off more in the vein of breaking benjamin and staind with PF, which seems to suit them a little bit better. Songs open with thrashing guitars and move into subtle, but catchy, verses. Even for those of you who sit patient just for the chorus', PF is a winner. Song for song, PF is worth every penny. Two years later, I still pick this record up and throw it on from time to time. So if you havent heard from 12 stones lately, listen again. You'll be in for a surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Diverse and more creative follow up.......2006-02-03

When 12 Stones' debt album came out it basically got two types of reviews: awesome or boring from a lack of creativity. The main complaint was the most of the songs sounded the same. 12 Stones must have listened as their follow up album "Potter's Field" is not only more diverse and creative but you can almost feel a deliberate attempt to make their own sound (no doubt stemming from the fact that way too many people compared them to Creed) Potter's Field, to me, makes two statements. First, they're their own band and are not trying to be Creed. Instead, they're trying to create music that they enjoy listening to and playing. Second, they make a statement that they're not going to attempt to reproduce success but instead have the guts to do their own thing.

Highlights on this album include: Speak Your Mind, Far Away and The Last Song among others. This is a great hard rock album for those of us that like the hard rock sound of the music but don't necessarily like the continual screaming or speed drums that sometimes come with it. This album took me a couple spins to get used to but the more I listen to it the more I like it.

This Jennifer Garner-starring film version Marvel Comics' martial arts expert/assassin-as-superhero never quite found its focus as successful big-screen adaptation. But its modern-rock song-score "Album" (Christophe Beck's more traditional orchestral score is also available) has no such obstacle, gathering together new recordings that punctuate the film's milieu with often forceful effectiveness. Jet keeps things lively with "Hey Kids," another rollicking dose of snotty retro-pop from the Aussie newcomers, while "Breathe No More" by Evanescence (previously only available as a live cut) is essentially a solo showcase for the emotive moodiness of singer Amy Lee's dusky voice, yet one that finds ample resonance with the film's title character. A shadowy remix of Finger Eleven's "Thousand Mile Wish," Taking Back Sunday's new "Your Own Disaster" and Strata's "Never There" mine a similarly introspective vein, contrasting well with more lively cuts like The Donnas' "Everything Is Wrong" and NYC's Twenty-Twos giving Veruca Salt's "5 Years" a nervy kick. --Jerry McCulley

    5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-02-25

This cd is really good. It has a lot of good rock songs. Even if you don't like ELEKTRA you will like this cd if you like rock music.

    4 out of 5 stars eh..........2006-10-08

I'm not really sure what to say about this compilation. For starters, I really did enjoy the addition of new songs by SpiderMan II-famous Jet, Evanescence with their previously live-only track Breathe No More, Strata, and a few more artists. Then we have Megan McCauley, who I think so deserves at least an MTV Music Award for this song. Yet, despite these praises, it really wasn't as good as I thought it was. It might be me just comparing it to the Daredevil soundtrack (as Elektra is the cohort to Daredevil)... or maybe I'm comparing one Evanescence song on this CD to two on Daredevil ("Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal"). Not sure. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not the worst CD out there... not by far. In fact, I really liked it. I just didn't like it enough to give it a full 5 stars. Maybe if they put stuff like "Before I Forget" or "Duality" by Slipknot or "Numb" or even "Frgt:10" by Linkin Park (the latter from Reanimation), I could have given it a higher rating. Don't let this scare you away from getting this, though. It's an awesome CD; it's also not the best in the world... but then again, what is?

    3 out of 5 stars It's decent.......2006-06-11

The songs on the soundtrack are either really good or really bad. The ones I think that are really good (and the reasons why I bought the soundtrack) are Tracks 6, 9, 12, and 15.
The rest of the songs aren't that good.
So basically the movie is better than the album. (Elektra receives 4 stars from me.)
If you like this soundtrack you will like the Daredevil Soundtrack.

The best of the Stones' first three albums of hopped-up R&B, 12 x 5 hints at why there was more to this quintet than to blues-reviving brothers like the Yardbirds and the Animals. From the opening version of Chuck Berry's "Around and Around," Mick Jagger sings with a charismatic mixture of sexuality and menace. Even as a teenager--he actually looks alive in the 1964 album sleeve photo--Keith Richards shows a rare bluesman's confidence. It's unclear why covers of "Time Is on My Side" and "It's All Over Now" have become classic hits while the equally great "Susie Q" remains obscure. --Steve Knopper

    5 out of 5 stars Raw Power.......2007-05-13

The raw power of the early Rolling Stones albums are awesome. Have been a fan of the Stones since the beginning.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Blues.......2007-04-28

Great from start to finish. Really revealing their brilliant, young talent.

The instrumental 2120 South Michigan Avenue is terrific. Every song is an eye and ear opener.

The album was great, then bought the 8 track, then the cassette, and again just had to buy the CD as it's an unforgettable collection of thier work.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of Good Stuff Here.......2006-06-12

This America only release isn't quite the stunner that their first record was (in my opinion), but there is certainly plenty of good stuff here. The lead song, Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" is one I just love. I also like the Stones version of Wilson Picket's "If You Need Me," and their version of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now." It is curious that I like these better than the ones written by Mick and Keith themselves, but I suppose that's because they were just starting out as song writers. They hadn't come into their own yet. The version of "Time on My Side," is the organ version, which I like better than the guitar version. This album taken in total sort of reminds me of Chicago Blues. I like it a lot, though I don't play it all that much any more.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time best.......2005-10-29

This is a great example of why I became such a big fan of the Stones. This was the best album of the British invasion period. I submit that the first five Stones US albums were the best work they ever did, this was Brian Jones' Rolling Stones at their best.
Brian was the heart and soul of the Stones and as good as they were/are they have never been better.
2120 South Michigan Ave.(the address of Chess Records) was thier only instrumental and it sizzles. Way to go Nanker Phelge. Where have you gone?

5 out of 5 stars Cementing The Early Legend.......2002-07-25

The Stones 2nd US album, released Oct 23, 1964. It cemented the early blues band legend with tracks from their famous Chess Studios session in Chicago during the 1st American tour (Muddy Waters helped carry their gear into the studio) and tracks recorded at Regent Sound in London. Essentially, this is the album that finalized their status with Chicago blues forever.

The album starts with Check Berry's Around And Around, which the Stones had been doing as a show stopper in the UK, the big hits Time Is On My Side and It's All Over Now, and the great slow blues numbers Confessin' The Blues & Good Times Bad Times. Although they used to do a lot of instrumentals, 2120 S. Michigan seems to have survived as the only memory of this part of the early Stones familiar to most fans. Personally I always liked Congratulations, but never cared for their version of Susie Q, although it was very popular at the time.

The tracks recorded June 10-11, 1964 at Chess Studios in Chicago were (Around And Around, Confessin' The Blues, Empty Heart, Good Times Bad Times, It's All Over Now, 2120 S. Michigan version 2, If You Need Me). Tracks recorded at Regent Sound in London were done on Feb 25, 1964 (Susie Q), June 24-26, 1964 (Time Is On My Side version 1, Congratulations), and Sep 28-29, 1964 (Under The Boardwalk, Grown Up Wrong).

This album was never released in the UK, however the tracks were released in the UK as follows:

6-26-64 It's All Over Now, Good Times Bad Times

8-14-64 Five by Five EP - If You Need Me, Empty Heart, 2120 S. Michigan version 1, Confessin' the Blues, Around and Around

1-16-65 The Rolling Stones No. 2 - Time Is On My Side version 1, Grown Up Wrong, Under The Boardwalk, Susie Q

Congratulations was not released in the UK until 10-5-73 on the album No Stone Unturned

I've been a Stones fan since about 64 or so. I've got prety much all their original albums. Amazon started posting some old ones with lots of bonus tracks and I thought I'd try one that looked like it had a lot of studio outtakes. This is very neat, something I've waited years for the Stones to do but I'm tired of waiting. Any other band would have released this stuff years ago. It's just too bad you have to buy the original album too and not just the outtakes because anyone who would want the outtakes already has the original album. But these are good: some old blues covers, Jagger/Richards originals that didn't quite cut the mustard, some redos of hits. These aren't just different mixes of songs you already have. Not Fade Away is for sure a different take. Look What You Done I'm not sure about. The harp solo is the same, but I wonder if it would be exactly the same if I put it side by side with the original release. Anyway, these are fun and the recording quality of the bonus tracks is equal to the original release. All good and worth it. From a fan for over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Simply Amazing.......2006-06-13

The guitar work, the way Brian and Keith weave their way through this record, is a joy to listen to and reason enough to own it, never mind the fine songs. I really like that they've included the long version of "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" rather than the much shorter single version, because it's a song I really like. Rolling Stone Magazine lists this record as number 181 on their list of the best five hundred records ever made. I'd probably put it in my top hundred. This is the third Stones album to come out in the States and once again they rock down the house with a Chuck Berry number "You Can't Catch Me," but the real gem on this record is their cover version of Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster." The numbers written by Mick and Keith are pretty darned good too. Brian Jones is amazing, simply amazing, as is this must own masterpiece.

      1 out of 5 stars Why Bother?.......2006-03-10

I Like 12 Stones, alot. Good Average Rock, nothing out of the ordinary, yet nothing Boring. 12 Stones is a good band, they should lose the "Christian Overtones", but I like 12 Stones alot. I Have both their Albums, and listen to em on a fairly usual basis.

But why even bother getting this EP? You can download those Songs... Illegally might I add... and then if you like em... buy the Album! They make more money offa that, so they shouldnt complain about you Sampling their Stuff.

Buy The Self Titled Debut "12 Stones" For a good sampling. 12 Stone fans would enjoy their newest Album More, Potter's Feild. Not as accessible, but still a great album in my opinion.

I give it 2 Stars Because 12 Stones is a good band deserving a Four... but the Album (which I am rating... not the band... Im rating the Album)sucks. No Point in getting this Album (EP). Unles syou collect every disc 12 Stones Puts out... then get it. And once you get it, the commit suicide because that's lame. haha.

Get the Real CDs. Not this lame EP.
