While easily comparable to R.E.M., Train travel a little farther south, stopping in Allman Brothers country. Ballads like "If You Leave" and "Homesick" could be mistaken for early demos by Athens's most beloved sons, but when the guitar solos kick in, it's classic Southern goodness. Luckily, Train don't derail themselves by sticking solely to greasy jams and high-wire guitar acrobatics. The San Francisco-based five-piece keep their slice-of-life sound simple and lean, never overdoing what doesn't need to be overdone. Frontman Patrick Monahan has a voice that was made for this material. Bearing an uncanny vocal resemblance to Blues Traveler's John Popper, he slip-slides from one drunken heartbreak to another, but always gets up, brushes the dirt off his jeans, and keeps on living. --Jason Josephes

With each new Dan Zanes and Friends release, many fans worry that his homespun magic will eventually hit the right note with the masses. Zanes' music, as offbeat as it is organic, is so special to forward-thinking young families that plenty have batted around half-baked plans to attach a password to it. Anybody else can sell out, the thinking goes, but please, please not him. Catch That Train, then, is bound to meet with a lot of hand-wringing. For one thing, it's the first Zanes and Friends release since the crazy-haired, asparagus-stalk thin artist started appearing in videos on the Playhouse Disney channel. For another, Starbucks has stepped in to lend a promotional hand. Those are ominous indicators indeed, but if the largely on-track Catch That Train proves anything, it's that Zanes isn't lock-stepping it with the boardroom goons just yet. Once again, the high-profile collaborators (The Blind Boys of Alabama, Nick Cave, Natalie Merchant) could cause a childless hipster to heed the all-aboard call, but also as on previous discs, it's the usual suspects who supply some of the strongest tracks: Barbara Brousal on "Mariposa Ole," Father Goose on "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," and the Rubi Theater Company on "Walkin' the Dog." True, "Let's Shake" seems suspiciously TV-ready; skip it and pretend it never happened. Then keep your fingers crossed that, once this train leaves the station, Zanes--plainspoken hero to so many--won't trade it in for a stretch limo. --Tammy La Gorce

As other reviews have indicated, Dan Zanes is fun, loose and all about the sing-along. I suspect that's why he collaborates so often and so well. If you're looking for tight, sophisticated arrangements, look elsewhere. If you're looking for music that everyone can get into, music that is accessible to children without being cloying to adults, then start filling your cart. Bruce Springsteen gets a lot of credit for bringing the Seeger catalog and other folk treasures to younger audiences, but we think he got the idea from Dan! We love the folk/americana covers, Dan's originals and the songs that he pulls in from other cultural traditions. Here are the albums we own and how we'd rank them:

"Long Black Train" is a good album but a terrific, individual track. The song is haunting and the deep, rich voice of Josh Turner makes for good listening whether or not you are a fan of country music. LBT has such an old-time, revival meeting feel to it that hand-clapping is almost mandatory.

Blue Train is one of those ineffable sound recordings that actually seems to capture a moment of perfect artistry. Coltrane was in the midst of a Prestige recording contract but was able to honor a previous commitment to Blue Note and release this one album. With four Coltrane originals, including the haunting theme of the title track, and one standard, this recording showed Coltrane was becoming the complete package: player, composer, and bandleader. What distinguishes this session from the Prestige dates of the same time is the easy, relaxed, and obviously well-rehearsed playing of the group, and the usual masterful recording by Rudy van Gelder. This enhanced CD-ROM also features two alternate takes. "Trane at his best. Lee Morgan not far behind........2006-11-04
In the liner notes is a quote from a jazz musician-I forget who- who claimed that "'Trane made those other guys(the sidemen)look ridiculous. Like amateurs..." or something to that affect. The only thing ridiculous is that quote from my perspective. Lee Morgan plays with a fire and dexterity far beyond his 19 years. He doesn't allow himself to get caught up in a note-burning contest with Coltrane, but instead follows his own inner vision and plays beautifully. His understated opening salvo on the title cut is classic. 'Trane has just finished a fast, long and amazing solo and instead of trying to match it's intensity(an impossible task)Morgan goes for the less-is-more approach, softly hitting a few notes and stepping away from the mic for a pause. Then he repeats. If he didn't have the respect for JC that I know he had I would almost daresay that he was making fun of 'Trane's excess!
The rest of the players acquit themselves admirably as well. An essential album.
This album got me into Jazz.......2006-07-21
Everything about this album is perfect. I don't think there is a jazz ensemble that can play as tightly together as the sextet on this album. The solos are exciting, driving, interesting and innovative. There are little things that the rhythm section and the horns do as backgrounds behind the soloist. The arrangements on here are great for a jazz sextet, and really gives the group a great big sound.
This album was the culmination of Coltrane's career as a saxophonist. Each musician on here is the best at what they do. This is the album which defines what post-bop really is. If you are a jazz musician, this is the standard that you should try to attain. I don't think there will ever be a saxophonist as influential as John Coltrane.

This 1962 recording represents Oscar Peterson at his most commercially accommodating, yet his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen never fails to swing. The program includes such familiar melodies as the title track (which began life as Duke Ellington's "Happy Go Lucky Local"), "Georgia on My Mind," and "The Honeydripper." With the notable exception of the gospel-like original "Hymn to Freedom," most of the tracks clock in at around three minutes. The basic feel of the album is blues. C Jam Blues, Night Train, Thing Ain't What They Used To Be, Moten Swing and Honey Dripper are all blues or blues related. However there's great variety amongst these tracks, contrast the mellow version of "Things Ain't What..." with the swinging version of "Honey Dripper".
On this album Peterson makes everything sound effortless, whether its his uptempo playing or superb ballad playing (such as on I Ain't Got It Bad..). My favourite track is Ellingtons Band Call. At the end of the track Oscar plays 3 increasingly syncopated resolutions leading on the 4th occasion to the end of the tune.
Perhaps the only thing you don't get on this album is the virtuoso Peterson (try the "The Trio" or "Tracks" for this). Sure some of this stuff requires excellent technique, but even at this level Oscar still has another gear.
As previous reviewers have said, special mention should be made of "Hymn To Freedom". This is a marvellous Peterson original with a great performance. A fitting way to end a superb album.

In 1999, Train came out of nowhere with the single "Meet Virginia" and soon after found themselves the proverbial overnight success. The San Francisco band with a penchant for the Southern jam could very easily be one of those acts that fade from memory after a lone hit. But the follow-up Drops of Jupiter makes that misfortune highly unlikely. The band employs tools of the roots-rock trade--mandolin, harmonica, bongos, and crisp acoustic guitar--to evoke that sort of "everything's gonna be all right" sentiment common in so many great pop rock songs. But this isn't a band that relies solely on its precursors for inspiration. These accomplished musicians never overplay, and understand the value of a well-placed synthesized accent or guitar effect. On tracks like "I Wish You Would," they command a plugged-in assertion that lends an inspiring jolt to their acoustic instrumentation. The title track is the album's epicenter. With swelling strings and chorded piano melody, the song sounds as if it were lifted from some lost tapes of Elton John's Madman Across the Water. It sweeps you up in an irresistible top-of-the-lungs sing-along and becomes the reference point for the rest of the album. Train continues to be a success...........2006-10-02
The album begins with a feel good song in 'She's On Fire' that is easy to sing along to with simply an amazing chorus. This is followed by the semi introverted 'I Wish You Would' and then the self titled song that became a radio staple 'Drops of Jupiter' that is one of Train's best songs. Another decent song is 'Hopeless' with a jamming rythmn and qaint lyrics. My favourite song on this album was the ageless beauty of a tranquil 'Whipping Boy' that Pat sings with a soft reserve and is a serenade for those downtrodden. The rest of the songs are fillers but still enjoyable and engaging in their own right and respect.
This album is a must for any Train fan or soft-rock enthusiast. A perfect album for a romantic evening or a night out with friends or family. Train followed this album with more respect and fame.

The rest of the CD just sounds like run of the mill pop that is here today gone tommorow. She's On Fire, Its About You, Missisippi, and Let It Roll On are semi-memorable tunes with a few good harmonies thrown in for good measure.
Otherwise this group sounds like they are merely trying to find their sound. It's too clean and pretty to be rock n roll but not natural enough to be country. Its merely syrupy hum drum pop that does not offend me but certainly does not move me either.

Well, that's Train. They had the miracle of Drops of Jupiter and who knows where it came from, but come it did, like a slap to the face and always remained fabulous with every overplayed-on-the-radio hearing. (Though I could do without all the "na-na-na-na-na" background over the last minute or so.)
And beyond that, there is not a single thing on this CD worth hearing, relentless mediocrity, as if one were trapped on the state fair circuit, hearing big-haired bands from the 80's eternally playing their semi-hits while roller coaster and dodge 'em cars add to the aural clutter.
Two stars for one miracle of brilliance.

Train is building a reputation as one of rock's tightest outfits one single at a time. The clever and sweet "Meet Virginia" was eclipsed by the gorgeous "Drops of Jupiter." My Private Nation may well prove these guys can squeeze more than one hit out of the album--although none are as enchanting as their breakthrough single. They continue to gravitate toward Elton John-inspired keys-and-guitar arrangements that are marked by studied rhythms and stellar production. While there's inventiveness to be found in these songs, there's a sameness to the tracks that makes the album as a whole fall a little flat. While attempting to recapture the grandeur of "Drops of Jupiter" on the opening song, "Calling All Angels," they overreach, and the pop-culture references scattered throughout date almost instantly. My Private Nation is a clean, intelligent disc, but it's also safe and middle of the road. Train's fans would be richly rewarded if the band took a few more risks. --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:

Train is a very unique band with a southern flair that sports respectable talent and enjoyable creative/energy. The commercial stuff on this album will appeal to most and (that alone) can justify purchasing this CD. For some of us, like myself, however, there's much more enjoyment to be had. For instance, my favorite song on this CD is "Save the Day" - it's fun/upbeat, it's very clever in using analogies (the lyrics are great if you "get it"), and it's a very different and unique sound that shows "personality". "Calling All Angels" on the other hand, in my ears, is a very boring song that I usually skip past. Go figure.
In short, if you like what you heard on the radio from Train, you will really enjoy this CD - one song or another.

Train has what I've been missing and this album (CD) brought it all together. They got it right, and are right on. This CD is easily one of the ten I have to take to my deserted island. Yes right up there with Led Zeppelin (4) and The White Album, Boston, And Etc. To be honest I've always struggled with who else would fill out that list. But this one will be there.
Many of the feelings and issues dealt with here just seem to speak to me personally and maybe that's my connection. But At my age I was losing my faith in rock and roll its future and wondering if I'd wasted my life as rooted to music as it has been. Train and this album have saved me.
Calling all Angels will be a classic in the annals of Rock and Roll, mark my words, and wait and see. But When I Look to the Sky, has touched my soul, and will be one of those songs I sing to myself when no one else is around and I need to reset my bearings.
The artistry in this CD seems to show the maturation of the band and its members. I'm sure some of these were very personal to these artists. My greatest fear is that they will decide or worse be persuaded by others or society to move away from what they have used to get where they are. But the integrity of there music so far seems to suggest they can be here for the long haul. Hopefully they will shut out the noise and just play, while we all reap the benefits. I was getting worried that I hadn't heard of anything new from Train, but as of the day I wrote this I saw they just released For Me It's You. Thus my hope is building.
While Keith Richards might live forever, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and Steve Tyler won't. Finally I have some hope for the future.

Silencing any suggestions that he's any less capable than his more high-profile Black Star partner Mos Def, Talib Kweli, along with DJ Hi-Tek, crafts a masterful debut with Reflection Eternal. Talib Kweli and Hi Teck Makes You Want To "Move Somethin" (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-31
There is not much I can say that already hasn't been said, seeing the average rating is at it's max. As I mentioned before, Kweli's rhymes are superior to hear. Being as young as I was at the time this dropped (around 14 or 15), trust me, I've never heard someone rhyme like that before. A perfect example where Kweli runs free on the mic is the song "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Another track that stood out was "The Blast" where even Hi Teck spits a verse that is also dope (the video had Talib doing two verses, but that is not on here. I'm kinda mad, since this is reissued).
Guest appearances are dope as well. My favorite would be Xzibit and Rah Digga popping up for the song "Down For The Count". Another would be the De La Soul contributed verses in "Soul Rebels". Production is also excellent by Hi Teck. Some of the song here are kind of laid back to listen to, but you can easily catch a vibe towards them.
"Reflection Eternal" (or "Train Of Thought" to some people) is one album that I can enjoy on many levels again and again. I remember listening to this album back in high school, and only a hand full of people knew who these guys were. If you ever get a chance, pick this us. The production on here is soothing and can clear your mind. If you are not familiar with Kweli, you might want to check out "Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star". I just found out Hi Teck was in a group called Mood back in '97 and will listen to that as well. Arguably one of the best that came out of Rawkus. Word up.

Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought: Best CD you've never heard of.......2006-12-20
Both Talib and Hi-Tek display impressive versatility in their respective trades, starting the CD with a party track like "Move Something," then moving to songs like "Memories Live," and "Love Language". You see Hi-Tek's jazz influence in songs like "Love Speakeasy," and "Good Mourning,". I also love the Nina Simone samples. The bonus track "For/Four Women," is a song which chronicles the trials and tribulations of Black Women since they arrived to this country centuries ago. Finally, on a personal note, "The Blast" is my favorite song in the whole wide world. Not saying you should care, but that tells you how I feel about this CD. I will listen to this when I'm 50 years old and I have no doubt about that.
That being said, it absolutely KILLS me that Kweli later comes out with LPs like "Quality" and "Beautiful Struggle," and gets very few to no tracks from Hi-Tek. It boggles my mind. When you look at the results of Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought and Blackstar, it becomes clear that the duo makes great and refreshingly intelligent music. In today's rap climate, that is clearly not the norm. I don't have an afro and I don't wear Cowrie shells or dashikis, but yes, it is great to hear rap music of some substance, celebrating black music and black people. I still treasure my copies of Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic and Life After Death, but this one's also in my special CD case...

More of a 'Great Sampler' than a 'Greatest Hits' Collection.......2006-07-18
Miller has a tendency toward song-title puns that don't do justice to the songs themselves ("Cryin' Drunk," "Crash on the Barrelhead" - not included here), but this only points out his self-consciously clever way with a phrase. The band has obviously mastered the two-step `train beat' (3 tracks here) and the hard-bouncing "Texas shuffle" (which accounts for eight of the CD's eighteen tracks), but it's Miller's lyrics that keep you coming back for more, even after repeated listens. Miller's albums as a solo artist certainly hold up well, but it's his work with Old 97's that is most effective, which is why this collection works as well as it does. How can you not love an album containing "Barrier Reef," "Lonely Holiday," "Jagged" and "Victoria," all on the same disk? "Hit By a Train" encapsulates some of the band's best moments, and hardcore fans of the band will want this if only for the non-album tracks (the above-mentioned "El Paso" and "Cryin' Drunk"), but casual fans would do well to continue exploring their catalog further. Train of Thought has something for everyone, and for fans of Dream Theater, new and old, it certainly doesn't disappoint. And the more you listen to it, the more you grow to like it. Definitely a recommended buy, period.

I don't know if I'd call myself a Dream Theater album. This was actually the second album of theirs I bought after "Imges & Words" but even to this day I still listen to it and with gusto. Even the lyrics are impressive for the most part. "Face yourself, man/Brace yourself and trace your hell back!"
This album is one of their heavier albums, probably even the heaviest of all of them (though I haven't heard all of them yet, including the new album). If you like a more metal sound you'll like this. It may be more "straight up" or "direct" than their previous albums but it still has its "prog-ness" to it. There's not many soft songs on here except "Vacant", which is short. Other than that, the only real softness is on parts of "Endless Sacrifice" and "In The Name of God", and I say part because a lot of those songs have heavy parts too.
It's probably safe to say there's not as much of that typical synthesizer, organ-like keyboard work, if you know what I mean, and a lot more distortion. However, Jordan does some really astounding keyboard work with a distorted, guitar-like keyboard sound. If you're not familiar to this type of keyboarding, you'll probably think it's a guitar, like I did, but really it's just Jordan kicking a**. Seriously, great stuff. The rest of the instruments and vocals are great too. My favorites as of now are "Endless Sacrifice" because of that really great instrumental section which in my opinion has two of the best guitar solos John as ever played as well as one of the best dual solos Jordan and John have ever played; and "In The Name of God" because it has that "epic" feel I wish I could hear more of (in metal in general). The closing part where James goes, "In the name of Gah-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahd/In the name of Gah-ah-aaaaahd!" is powerful and soaring and one of the best vocal lines I've ever heard from them and is the best part of the song. I find myself rewinding and listening to that part over and over because it gets me so hard.
Well, anyway, this is a heavy Dream Theater album with a lot of good stuff. It's not a repeat of "Images & Words" and "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory" so spare me the tears. I don't know if it's better than their earlier albums, which have a lot to do with personal preference as Dream Theater generally releases quality albums and there's so much to examine in all of them. However, I think it's one of Dream Theater's better albums and definitely worth the buy. It may not be perfect but that doesn't mean it's worth the unfair, crap rating people are giving it.

With all that said, if you're like I was several months ago: wondering about the large catalog of DT offerings and not knowing where to start, AND if you really enjoy wild, heavy, monstrous guitar tone - bordering on some of the extremely heavy industrial or metalcore type of stuff, then THIS is the album to start with.
Then - once you listen to a couple of Petrucci's solos on this thing, you're sure to go buy the rest of their albums, because he's popping off the same kind of completely mind-blowing solos on nearly every song on every album... it's just that on this one he really has a grinding, chunky rhythm track on most every tune, and they really went out of their way to play metal.
At the same time it is extremely progressive, so I caution metalcore and industrial fans: if you become bored with your collection after taking in the complexities of Dream Theater... don't say you weren't warned: this band plays stuff twice as complex as anything you've heard before, and frankly that can include Vai, Gilbert, whoever... nobody goes to the Nth degree the way this band does: the skill level of everybody, not just the guitar player, is so over the top, you're hearing new nuances everywhere even after many, many listenings. (And note how the real DT afficianados are ripping this album for not being progressive enough... so give it a listen, and then imagine how mind-bending the rest of their catalog is).
