Talking Heads drummer Chris Franz and bassist Tina Weymouth formed Tom Tom Club to continue exploring the polyrhythmic experiments conducted on the Heads' Remain in Light release. On this self-titled debut, the husband-and-wife team mixed urban and arty new wave elements, generating two mammoth dance-floor hits. "Wordy Rappinghood" is a study in art-school rap as it percolates along with the help of funk beats and synthesized bleeps. The brilliant "Genius of Love" gives props to James Brown. A slow, slinky funk masterpiece, it includes call-and-response vocals, a rap, and a lilting melody. "L'Elephant" is a pure delight, rollicking like a nursery rhyme from some ultrahip daycare center. The band also tackles the doo-wop standard "Under the Boardwalk," though it feels like a mere novelty item. Still, Tom Tom Club proves that David Byrne wasn't the only genius in Talking Heads. --Steve Gdula

Tom Jones all but invented saucy power pop back before the sixties even started to swing when his second single "It's Not Unusual" rocketed up the UK charts in 1965. After that initial triumph the singer never looked back, tying his hair back with a thin black ribbon and putting some rather expressive body English into his stage moves, which assured that the stage floor would be routinely pelted with various undergarments pitched by enthusiastic fans. Almost four decades later both Jones and his audience are no less fervent as Wales' second-most famous export runs through his extensive and varied songbook, still imbuing his old chestnuts like "What's New Pussycat?" and "Delilah" with a sense of naughty fun and irony. But Jones is at his best while giving the latest generation of rockers a run for their money, as he pairs up with the likes of Wyclef Jean, the Sterophonics, Art of Noise, the Cardigans, and Mousse T; as he overhauls staid tired standards like "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" or "Baby It's Cold Outside" with his arch humor and gutsy delivery. Prince's "Kiss" crackles with an inner light that even the great Minneapolis savant didn't intend, while his duet with Portishead is as cold and disturbing as a grave. A must have album. --Jaan Uhelszki

SOrry but the album Reload was launched in Europe some 7 or 8 years ago, with spectacular duets including Robbie Williams, Van Morrison and others. I bought it in Spain and since then, is one of my favorites in my car. I still admire his powerful voice and his intensity when performing.

5 out of 5 stars Genius of music.......2006-02-23

By the time Tom Tom Club released their first album, Talking Heads had already established themselves as an amazing melting pot of musical styles ranging from the electronic influences of Brian Eno to the world-beat type rhythms that made Remain in Light the classic that it is.

Tom Tom Club clearly attempts to take the magic that spilled forth from Remain in Light and drive it in a similar direction while meshing it with the more current sounds of the time. Witness Genius of Love, a landmark achievement that still stands today as one of the great songs of all time. That song alone makes this album worth the price of admission. Fortunately, the rest of the album isn't far behind.

I didn't care too much about Tom Tom Club in the '80s. I'd heard Genius of Love and, of course, thought it was pretty cool. I never bothered to pick up a Tom Tom Club album, though. I found a copy of Close to the Bone on vinyl for $.99 a while back and thought it was good, but not necessarily great. Nevertheless, I kept on the hunt for a nice vinyl copy of their first album. I finally found it last week, for an amazing $4. After just a couple of listens, I think I can easily say that this album is an order of magnitude better than Close to the Bone.

If you're a fan of Talking Heads, world beat, or even just somebody who knows Genius of Love and appreciates it for what it is, get this album. In addition to the well known Genius of Love and Wordy Rappinghood, pay particular attention to L'Elephant, As Above So Below, and On On On On... You will not be disappointed. Join the club.

5 out of 5 stars WB pull the lead out!.......2006-01-18

Like the rest I have always loved TTC. I am moving my vinyl over to CD and really wish the WB would pull the lead out and release "Close to the bone" on CD! It needs to be released, really it does!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, But............2005-11-14

I chose to put my comment here since this is their first (and arguably best) album -

WHERE'S THE 'GREATEST HITS' COLLECTION??!!!!!

I'd like to see "Pleasure Of Love", "Suboceana", "Call Of The Wild" and "Devil Does Your Dog Bite?" (From the "Married To The Mob" soundtrack) all on one CD! And while they're at it, they could also tack on those cool live versions of "Genius Of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood" from the 12" of "Call Of The Wild."

It's not fair that Backstreet Boys and Hillary Duff have 'greatest hits' collections, and they have fewer albums than TTC.

Sire Records - Are you listening?? You put this together, and you'll get my $15!!

5 out of 5 stars Amen!.......2005-08-19

And where is CTB???? WB releases so much crap but, TTC is da' bomber! If they never release CTB on CD I will never play my LP 'cause I do not want to wear it out even more. WAYYYYYYYYYYYY ahead of there time with, as previously stated, sublime art!

4 out of 5 stars Trip back in time ..........2005-03-27

Worst ever? Perhaps I do not know what I am talking about, but I greatly value this album - I had it (twice) on vinyl and it is FUN. Comprendez fun? Where an ecelectic group of musicians get together, enjoy themselves and incidentally touch off a musical force.

I saw TTC live twice and my god were they good - and this CD is where it starts. It gets 4 stars because the sound isn't quite what I had hoped - maybe one day someone will remaster it.

Perhaps I'm an idiot. My collection is still a little under 1,000 CDs, and I sold my 1,200 piece vinyl collection a few years back, but I have to stand up for Chris and Tina and the gang.

If you are a Backstreet Boys fan like I presume the previous reviewer is, I'd suggest staying away from ANY decent music, this included.

5 out of 5 stars Al Downing At Last............2007-05-01

This is the best I'll be holdin' on" by Al Downing yet :)

Now all I need to do is find some Dooley Silverspoon music anywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-03-01

This is an excellent cd. The sound quality is amazing! All of the music has been digitally remastered. As any collector of disco 12" knows, finding the extended mixes originally sent to the discos is not easy, nor cheap! This collection brings together many of the outstanding remixes by Mr. Moulton. I would have liked a complete collection, but maybe they will realease more volumes. Andrea True Connection's "What's Your Name, What's Your Number" in its extended length would be heaven on earth!

4 out of 5 stars Very good compilation.......2007-01-07

If you are a Disco collector and also like rare soul 12" disco music, I strongly recommend this product. I bought because of Al Downing "I'll be holding on". I had it already, but I would like an extended version. Unfortunately, it is like "Rock the boat" by Hues Corporation, no extented version. However, you will find increadible rare tracks in extended versions like, Keep on Truckin (11:14), You've got the power (7:44), Moonboots (9:31) e much more.

5 out of 5 stars The Godather of Disco.......2006-04-28

If you happened to be a Disco Funk fiend during the 70's (like myself), just seeing the moniker "A Tom Moulton Mix" on a record label or LP cover would incite goose-bumps and trigger an uncontrollable urge to snatch up what ever record that the practically guaranteed stamp of quality appeared on.

To appreciate the level of involvement Tom Moulton has had with the over 4000 mixes he has executed, you must first understand that not all 'remixers' and 'remixes' are cut from the same cloth.

Over the last 30+ years since it was first employed as a marketing hook, the term 'remix' has changed meaning and context, no doubt through the creative contributions of at one time or another, A&R exec, label owner, producer, songwriter, remastering engineer, and remixer, Tom Moulton.

Most of what is currently considered a 'remix' is actually a 'reproduction' or 'additional production', (in most cases) stripping away almost all of the original elements of the song while adding one's own musical ideas to the mix (sometimes, actually for the better).

Mr. Moulton's legacy is unique in that a good number of his mixes were actually the first or only mixes released to the market (the first popular example being the huge '70s funk hit "Do It Anyway You Wanna" by soul combo People's Choice for Gamble & Huff's TSOP/ P.I.R. label).

This was not a remix done to accompany the original but THE mix that we all first heard when it was introduced to an extremely enthusiastic public during the summer of 1976.

Curiously, most did not know this was a remix since Moulton was never credited for the additional production that took it from being an almost forgettable album track and transforming it into what would become the biggest selling single for the label up to that date.

Most of Moulton's remixes, as proven with this collection, were comprised of just the original musical elements, tweeked with a louder EQ and extended in length to satiate a growing new market sparked by the Disco phenomenon and the club DJ's demand for more product, i.e. the 12" disco single. One could say without much argument that Moulton for the most part invented the disco single as well as the method of creating the content to fill those singles, i.e. the 'extended remix' or 'disco mix' which would fuel it's brief but globally influential commercial success.

In another example, one of the most famous and enduring remixes (MFSB's "Love Is The Message" included in this collection in it's finest re-mastering to date) Moulton was the first remixer to go in the studio to add additional music (most of which was recorded during the original sessions but never used in the final album mix), editing and extending the length of the song considerably, then, utilizing the same method for several other hit songs for the label coupiling them as a greatest hits package with a twist for the then already red hot Philadelphia International Records, created and helmed by R&B songwriting and production legends Gamble & Huff.

The results comprise what I believe is the first commercially released full length album containing remixes by a single producer, the must have "Philadelphia Classics" (ASIN: B000066C12) which ironically, Moulton was never prominently credited for. It's latest incarnation, recently remastered (to Moulton's distaste I might add) also includes the above mentioned "Do It Anyway You Wanna" remix.
At least he was finally credited for it.

Since Mr. Moulton was primarily a producer (see Grace Jones first 3 albums, People's Choice second and third LPs, First Choice, CJ & Co. and many others), his qualification as a 'remixer' was well earned.

Choosing favorites from this collection was a difficult task,
however for the sake of inspiring sales, undeniable highlights of "A Tom Moulton Mix" include the rolling funk of Eddie Kendrick's number one 70's classic "Keep On Trucking'" which has been fleshed out to over 11 minutes to reveal more of the brass and rhythmic interplay only hinted at in the original LP version, the latin schtick / romantic drama of Grace Jone's interpretation of the classic "La Vien Rose" (which Moulton also produced) and the ultimate Disco anthem and touchstone blueprint for what is now called 'house music', MFSB's essential classic "Love Is The Message" mentioned earlier here.

To coin a classic term, Mr. Moulton is a true 'record man' i.e. someone who seems to instinctively know that a song will or should be a hit because it's good, and not the reverse.

It's rare that someone who was critical to the commercial success of the Disco / Dance genre and as deserving of a showcase featuring their body of work (see Larry Levan's "West End Remixes" collection ASIN: B00005QFLA and "Salsoul Greatest Mixes Vol 2 ASIN: B0001ZW69M) gets the quality treatment that the reputable UK based Soul Jazz Records has bestowed upon this prolific producer.

I'm hoping this collection is just a first of a many volumed series that will be compiled by Mr. Moulton since arguably, there is more than enough material in his distinguished discography that could / should be reintroduced to a public with a growing thirst for quality dance music.

5 out of 5 stars This will change your mind about remixes!.......2006-04-23

I am generally not a huge fan of remixes. Generally, I find that if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Songs like "Keep On Truckin'" and "More, More, More" are already musical *masterpieces*, so why tinker with them? Would someone walk up to the Mona Lisa and change the color of her hair? When most people think of remixes, they think of the typical lazy club mix, with a song being layered with a bunch of incongruous beats, lasting for 12 minutes, repeating the same thing over and over. But not Tom Moulton. His approach to mixing songs is to understand WHY the original song was worth mixing again, pick out the elements of the song that make them so beloved by people, and to manipulate the song so that it is both familiar, retaining its original charm, but different, and worth listening to closely. His approach is very respectful of the originals, and I am actually preferring some of his mixes over the originals, which is really saying quite a lot!

This CD is pretty expensive (for a CD), but if you know and like any of the original songs on this compilation, I am sure that you will adore this. And even if you are totally unfamiliar with the songs on this album, you will undoubtedly find some gems on here that will makes buying this album a gamble that will pay off in spades.

With the "Jammin' Oldies" format spreading across America, not to mention the current proliferation of dance-floor-ready DJ discs, the time is right for superstar morning-radio jock Tom Joyner to weigh in. The music on Joyner's Old School Mix is actually cut up by veteran remixer Steve "Silk" Hurley, whose tempo shifts are occasionally sloppy, but who more often executes baaad segues such as the one from Slave's "Slide" into Heatwave's "Groove Line." Whether you're a fan of the no-rap approach or a hip-hop kid in need of deep-dish '70s and early-'80s stompers, this is a good party to crash. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Brings the good times back .......2007-05-07

This is a must CD for anyone who was brought up in the 70's 80's or 90's It brings back so many memories from the good old days and has you dancing in your car, living room, anywhere you maybe listening. Musicians do not make music like this anymore they copy this type of music. Everyone should have this CD

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-11-10

This CD is great! The songs all flow into each other to provide a smooth continuous dose of old school funk. It went over great at a party that I went to, and it plays just as well on that long drive to Vegas! I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago old school!.......2006-11-03

Old school Chicago style. My hometown! Used to listen to Tom joyner way back when. Good choice of tunes!

4 out of 5 stars Brilliantly mix set of classics.......2004-03-08

I really can't agree with some of the other reviews of this album saying that certain tracks are tired, and sloppily-mixed. Sure, some of the tracks are classics that you will have heard before, but there are several leftfield choices and quite a few real gems. Steve 'Silk' Hurley's mix uses Protools' trickery, tuning and filters to make the transition between tracks either seamlessly or cleverly. Although he is better know for his house tracks/remixes, there's nothing sloppy about this CD at all. Despite the second volume still being my favourite, this first one remains a perfect party-starter, and I can't wait for the next volume to come out.

2 out of 5 stars Technically okay, with the Hurley touch, but...........2000-06-13

....how many times can you get away with putting "More Bounce To the Ounce", "Dazz", "Slide" and "Funkin' For Jamaica" (which, like I said earlier, is ubiquitous) on ol' Skool mixes and expect to sound fresh? I am positively surprised that "Atomic Dog" and "Genius Of Love" is not on this, this being a bucket of cliches...find something new, we're wearing these jams out.

5 out of 5 stars On the one! With Tom Joyner.......2007-01-11

As usual Tom Joyner has put out another great complication of hits to bring back the memories of yesteryear.
If you grew up during the 70's & 80's this is a trip down memory lane. For those of you who enjoy music the way it was meant to be created then this is for you. Your teenage children will love it as well.
Definitely a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Joyner Old School Reviews.......2007-01-09

If you grew up in the "80's" (as for myself I graduated high school in 1981)this CD is for you. It features all of the late 70's through 80's hits, mixed just as I remembered them from high school and college days.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the first one!.......2002-05-23

Tom Joyner does it again with his old school mix. The hits get better as he pulls out some of the best songs ever heard from back in the day. Keep on putting out more hits for us to listen and dance to Mr. Joyner. Thank you again!

5 out of 5 stars This one is even better than the first one!.......2002-05-15

Is this a must-have for true old-school funketeers? As "Melvin" would say, "Oh yesssss!" You will dance, you will sing, you will smile -- and the best part is, a portion of the proceeds go to the Tom Joyner Foundation. Anyone claiming to be a fan of old-school R&B will be totally rewarded with this CD's collection of hits.

From hard-to-find jams like "Must Be The Music" and "I Hear Music in the Streets" to funk-tastic standbys "Holy Ghost", "Fantastic Voyage" and "Good Times", there is no way anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s will be disappointed. Steve "Silk" Hurley picked 20 great songs, and the mix is fluent and flawless. I hadn't heard Bohannon's "Let's Start the Dance" since I was in college in Atlanta (Clark College, now CAU).

Hey, Mr. Joyner, may I recommend including Brick's "We Don't Wanna Sit Down, We Wanna Get Down", Teena Marie's "Square Biz", and Imagination's "Just An Illusion" on the next CD? Bet. Keep 'em coming; I'll holla!

Brian

5 out of 5 stars Back to "Skool".......2002-05-11

Sheer pleasure from start to finish.
Steve "Silk" Hurley outdoes himself with the mixing of some incredibly juicy old-skool classics on this disc. The mix of Chaka Khan's rockin' Clouds into Side Effect's "Always There" is worth the ticket for admission. When you hear the guitar riff from CLouds launching into the vocal intro of Always There, you can understand why Hurley is a Grammy Winner.
There are many other enjoyable nuggets on this disc, especially if you are a child of the best ever generation of soul music (1973-1979). Change's "The Glow Of Love" (with Luther Vandross on vocals) sounds sparkling, with a tremendous bass line brought front and center in this mix. "Street Life" sounds great, with emphasis added to the horns. And as always, Rapper's Delight, with its "Ho-tel, Mo-tel, Holiday Inn" chorus will have you singing just like Wonder Mike.
As with any mix disc, don't buy this looking for full original versions of these songs (some of which are exceedingly difficult to locate on CD). Most cuts eliminate final verses. But the mix itself is incredible, and you will have little reason to hit the skip button from start to finish.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It!.......2007-05-24

This 2 CD set has a second or third tier of live performances -- not one song that you would find familiar from listening to Tom Jones. It has TJ songs he performs live with sound so poor it sounds like someone snuck a pocket recorder into a show. Also other people's songs that he sings badly, often butchering the lyrics. I wish I had read the other very negative review before I bought.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-04-29

Worst sound quality I have ever heard. Sounds like it was recorded by Chimpanzees. As a long time and very satisfied Amazon customer I am astounded that Amazon would sell anything this bad. I'm equally astounded as a Tom Jones fan that his organization would market this junk under his name. Amazon should offer refunds to anyone who ordered this CD and take it off their market.

4 out of 5 stars Only place to get the original "Goodbye Horses".......2005-10-17

The weird song "Goodbye Horses" by the obscure Q. Lazzarus and The Feelies "Too Far Gone" are really the only reasons to own this odd collection of mismatched songs. Brian Eno's lazy cowboy influenced piece "You Don't Miss Your Water" is a novelty, for it is Eno's take on a song probably better sourced from "Riders in the Sky". New Orders "Bizarre Love Triangle" adds to the band's growing collection of residuals for this piece's widespread appearance. The Tom Tom Club serves up their worst song ever.

4 out of 5 stars GOODBYE HORSES COMPARED.......2004-10-23

I RECENTLY WON AN AUCTION FOR THE MARRIED TO THE MOB CD WHICH I MAINLY WANTED FOR THE "GOODBYE HORSES" TRACK BY Q. LAZZARUS FROM THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS JAMES GUMB DANCE ROUTINE. I ALSO RECENTLY PURCHASED THE PSYCHE ALBUM "LEGACY" IN WHICH THE GROUP PSYCHE DID A REMAKE OF THE GOODBYE HORSES SONG. I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY REVIEWS WHICH COMPARED THE TWO GROUPS RENDITIONS OF THIS SONG. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THE ORIGINAL BY Q. LAZZARUS IS THE BEST, LIKE MOST ALL ORIGINALS. BUT I MUST SAY THAT THE PSYCHE VERSION IS EXCELLENT. THE SINGER'S VOICE IS VERY SIMILAR TO Q. LAZZARUS BUT PSYCHE'S VOCALS AREN'T AS PRONOUNCED IN VOLUME AND TEND TO BLEND IN MORE WITH THE SONG. PSYCHE TENDS TO MAKE USE OF SYNTHESIZERS MORE IN THE SONG. THE DRUMS ARE PRACTICALLY THE SAME RHYTHM AND BEAT IN BOTH VERSIONS.
MOSTLY, I'M WRITING THIS REVIEW FOR PEOPLE WHO CANNOT GET THEIR HANDS ON THE VERY RARE, HARD TO FIND MARRIED TO THE MOB CD BUT WOULD STILL LIKE TO HAVE A GOOD VERSION OF "GOODBYE HORSES" IN THEIR CD COLLECTION SINCE THE CURRENT ALBUM "LEGACY" BY THE GROUP PSYCHE IS READILY AVAILABLE. YOU CAN EVEN GET IT RIGHT HERE ON AMAZON. THE WHOLE ALBUM IS ACTUALLY VERY GOOD AND PRETTY COOL. DON'T BE AFRAID TO BUY IT. YOU WON'T BE DISSAPPOINTED.

2 out of 5 stars A Different Kind of Review.......2003-04-23

This review is different in the respect that it addresses what is NOT on the Soundtrack.

Rent the movie again, and listen to the song playing when Michelle Pfeiffer's character, Angela first arrives in the city with her son. The song playing is WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD, by Jane Child. The self-titled CD, Jane Child, was actually released a year after this movie was made.

Nonetheless, my point is that "Welcome to the Real World" should have made it onto the soundtrack. There, I've said it--- I feel better now.

4 out of 5 stars Hello, "Horses".......2003-04-02

Music supervisors usually choose existing songs to be used in a movie, apart from the score created for the film. "Goodbye Horses" gained notoriety for its use in Jame Gumb's, um, -dancing- scene in "Silence of The Lambs". Jonathan Demme's music supervisors assembled a good set of tunes.

Most of the songs are straight out of MTV "120 Minutes" territory. Before alternative became an obsolete term, these were good examples. Sinead O'Connor's Jump in The River" and New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" will yank you right back into your senior year of high school (depending upon your age). "Devil Does Your Dog Bite?" is fun and goofy. The Feelies' "Too Far Gone" has a strong kinship to The B52's.

Brian Eno Closes the CD with a soothing, quasi-country lament ("You Don't Miss Your Water"), a reminder of how much variety he has brought to pop music as a musician and producer.

As for "Goodbye Horses," it sounds smaller and mellower when not played in Jame Gumb's torture chamber/basement. It's a good dance track with an easy beat. There's a slight mania surrounding this album, mainly because that song is so hard to find. Even if the "Horses" were absent, the soundtrack is a good cross-section of 80's new wave/dance pop.

5 out of 5 stars The best Tom Tom Club CD by far.......2006-06-09

Tom Tom Club is a spin off from the Talking Heads, featuring Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. This is the group's fourth CD. It is 57 minutes long and the sound quality is very good. For some reason, the Tom Tom Club is relatively unknown and their CD's are hard to find.

This is a great album. It is along the lines of what the Talking Heads were doing during the time of Stop Making Sense, especially the songs that featured Weymouth.

This is a collection of great dancable songs. There isn't a bad track on it. And even at 57 minutes, it never gets slow or boring. They do a wonderful version of You Sexy Thing.

This is their best album. The earlier albums are OK. I don't like their last album, The Good, The Bad and The Funky.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this so unappreciated?!.......2003-10-03

As a big fan of Talking Heads, David Byrne, and everything else I had heard related to TH, I saw a used copy of this on sale for pocket change, and thought I should definitely pick it up. On the first couple listens, I was a little unsure about it . . . Seemed sort of weirdly disco-ish in some ways. But the more I listened, the more it grew on me, and it's now definitely one of my favorite albums. "Who Wants an Ugly Girl?" has a really catchy reggae-ish beat, "Daddy Come Home" features some really cool and creative instrumentals (bagpipes, etc.), "You Sexy Thing" is a very hip cover, and every single other song on the CD is also wonderfully fun and catchy. It seems like it just doesn't get old. I also discovered this is the BEST music I've ever listened to while exercising...So upbeat and energetic.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......2005-08-02

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

5 out of 5 stars "The First".......2007-04-15

Greetings,

I am one of the few who actually got to see "The First" -- a musical about Jackie Robinson.

I do not have this CD but wish it had the title song from "The First" ...don't think it exists anywhere. I actually still remember some dialogue/lyrics from it and would like to hear it/read the words again.
I also would like to know if any version or scenes from the play are available to do in a school. Anybody?
Have a nice day!

4 out of 5 stars MISSGYDER TOTALLY MISGUIDED.......2004-07-21

This is not so much a review as a rebuttal; I was the orchestrator for this album, MISSGYDER's assertion of totally synthesized sound is totally incorrect: the charts were played by 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, percussion, drums, keyboards, and a string section. I sorry the sound didn't meet the approval of the reviewer labeled MISSGYDER, but I can testify to the reality of the orchestra, the players, and my scores which are at the Library of congress.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs from not-so-great musicals.......2003-04-19

I was given this for my birthday, along with Unsung Sondheim, my favorite composer. I was excited, and a little bit skeptical because I've NEVER heard of these musicals. Once I started though, I was hooked. I want sheet music to so many, they're fun to sing along to, or just to listen to they great singer/actresses they got. My personal favorites are Smile, Sherry, Ragtime Romeo, and Silverware. I recommend this for all Broadway Babies and theatre buffs like me!

3 out of 5 stars Poor Production Ruins Good Product.......2001-05-15

Unsung Musicals is a great idea, presenting songs from shows that didn't get their due on Broadway. However, the production of this CD is very poor, using poorly synthesized instruments and cheesy drum tracks. I could have recreated these sounds using a home software program, they're so bad! The songs themselves are good, but the album is so horrid in terms of listening value that you'd be embarrased to put this in your CD player. I recommend this CD only for students and professionals in the music theatre world as a way to learn songs you wouldn't normally hear, but other than that, I can't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-14

Just because a musical was not successful, that doesn't mean that there were no good songs in it (pardon the double negative). These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Smile" (from Smile), "Ragtime Romeo" (The Vamp), "Sherry!" (Sherry!), and "She's Roses" (Drat! The Cat!).
