The 1960s may be dead for this Liverpool quartet, but the 1980s are alive and well. The opening track sets the scene: For the first few seconds, you'd swear it was Gang of Four--by way of Franz Ferdinand--with that angular, yet bouncy guitar attack, but then the vocals come in. Could it be Joe Strummer, Joe Jackson...Ted Leo? No matter, "Riot Radio" is a great post-post-punk track any way you look at it (that's Matt McManamon on the mic, by the way). Up there with, yes, "Take Me Out," "Apply Some Pressure" (Maximo Park), and "I Predict a Riot" (Kaiser Chiefs). On the rest of their debut, the Dead 60s distinguish themselves from the current UK guitar-rock crop with shorter songs and more ska, dub, and "Rock the Casbah"-style dance beats, which means they would fit just as comfortably on a bill with Bloc Party as The Rapture. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Riot on the radio.......2006-01-02

Britpop is not dead. Not since 94/95 has there been a resurgence in British indie rock bands and The Dead 60s are a fine example of a new indie band. The three singles in the album are the most noticeable; Loaded Gun, Ghostfaced Killer and (the excellent) Riot Radio. Loaded Gun is a great example of The Dead 60s using guitar work typical of an indie band, but having a jamming beat underneath it. Ghostfaced Killer sounds like a Kaiser Cheifs' song, with its catchy lyrics and tune, but without the woahhh before the chorus. Again, a ska beat is used underneath it, similiar to the ska/indie of Madness. If Ghostfaced Killer is catchy, Riot Radio is addictive. The first song on the album and the best, shows what a great new guitar band The Dead 60s are, with a chorus that you pick up instantly.

The rest of the songs are not without merit: A Different Age, although only 93 seconds long, is about as urgent as a song can get, with a rapid bassline. You're Not The Law is reminiscent of the post-punk era, a song that wouldnt sound of place in a Clash lineup. Similiar to this is Horizontal, urgent and slightly punk sounding. A couple of the songs on the album drag, with Soul Survivor being the only song I didn't like.

Overall, definitely get the album if you like Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party or Hard-Fi (who are extremely similiar to these).

On a side note, The Dead 60s are amazing live, especially with Riot Radio. If you like live indie music, go to one of their gigs.

good disc, great sound. My complaint? I work a ton of hours and can't install the play back feature on my security computer. So in other words this doesn't play on a computer unless you load the playback program. Anti Piracy? One of my employees burnt the entire disc off of Limewire. I paid for the disc and am limited on play back features but he can priate it and have the freedom to play anywhere.......... :(

4 out of 5 stars Great cd!.......2006-02-16

The Dead 60's debut cd has a mix of influences. Most prevalent is the Clash. Throw in some Specials and sprinkle some dub on top. This all makes for one terrific cd. "Riot Radio" is the first single and the lead off track. It's a great indication of what this band is all about. A punchy song with a driving beat. That continues with "A Different Age". They change gears with "Nowhere" and head down a more reggae/dub trail with a little spaghetti western thrown in for good measure. Very catchy. As are "Control This" and "You're Not The Law". Both great reggae songs, the latter which wears its Clash influences on its sleeve. Other standout tracks include "Just Another Love Song", "Horizontal" and "The Last Resort". On "Nationwide", the singer sounds like Joe Jackson fronting The Clash on a track that could have come straight off of "Sandinista".

These guys have a lot of potential. If this is just the beginning, I can't wait to hear where these guys go next. They're great songwriters and their sound is really tight.

4 out of 5 stars kids these days.......2006-02-14

So almost every indie band we listen to these days reminds us of some band we were enamored with in our twenties. Back in the 1980's when everything was new, exciting and fresh. Whether they're from my hometown of Detroit or yours, somewhere in the UK. Is any young band completely new and original? Interpol sounds like a Joy Division tribute band. But that's not such a bad thing. Most of the current Detroit bands ( like the Von Bondies, the Go and the Detroit Cobras ) sound like the Bookies Club 870 bands of my youth. The above could very well be Coldcock, Cynecide and Nikki and the Corvettes. But that's OK, isn't it?
The Dead 60's do sound a lot like the Clash at times but more often sound much more like Gang Of Four. In fact, guitar-wise, a lot like Gang Of Four. And that's cool. Because young rock bands are not recording for fogeys like us over 40. And the average twenty-something has never heard of the Gang Of Four. Blink 182 fans think Rancid invented their own sound.
No sweat. When I was a kid I thought Led Zeppelin wrote "You Shook Me" and "I Can't Quit You Baby". The ( borrowed ) Beat goes on.
Buy this CD, it's quite good. And play it for your nephew or neighbor or kid who cuts your lawn and tell them stories of how cool Joe Strummer used to be. That's Rock and Roll geezer.

5 out of 5 stars One of 2005's best new bands.......2006-02-01

This band are always getting compared to old Ska bands, and yes, they do have a ska sound, but The Dead 60s are more upbeat, more rock, and I think they sound a lot like Elvis Costello's better music, although the Dead 60s are much better. The songs are concise and varied, with organ fills heard here and there, perticularly in the last track, You're Not The Law. The strongest songs are We Get Low, Riot Radio (which you might recognize from a Sirius TV commercial), and Loaded Gun. This band sounds like nothing else around, a welcome break from the norm, and a refreshingly energetic attitude. Buy this CD now!
