With Telling Stories, her first album since 1995's New Beginnings, Tracy Chapman returns to the spare, unsentimental feel of her early work. In doing so, she recaptures some of the urgency and simple melodiousness that made her debut a soulful folk-rock classic. There's maturity here, exemplified by recurring spiritual metaphors. On "Unsung Psalm" she imagines her funeral, singing, "I'd have a halo and flowing white robes / If I live right." "Wedding Song" offers the plainspoken, devotional line, "I reach out for your hand / For you I'd don a veil." The musical arrangements, too, are pared-down, with ghostly banjo, silvery fiddle, and guitar woven into subtle drum loops. Though not as immediately captivating as her debut, Telling Stories is a focused return to form for Chapman. --Lucy O'Brien

4 out of 5 stars Listening And Loving It! 4 1/2 Stars!.......2006-12-31

With such previous hits as "Fast Car" and "Give Me One Reason", Tracy Chapman not only introduced herself to us but made us fall in love with her in the process. Her vocals were unlike any other we had heard before, often vibrating or ululating at pivotal moments during any given song. Now, she tells us stories. About her life? Yes, but more importantly, about OURS. With heartfelt lyrics and melodies that gracefully cascade over us, Tracy Chapman uses "Telling Stories" to sing our life's histories - life, love and the lack thereof.

What I like most about Chapman, and subsequently "Telling Stories", is that she, along with her music, is 3-dimensional, often providing several messages within each song which allows the listener to pick and choose, so to speak. For example, on the first track for which the album is named, "Telling Stories", one is left wondering: Is she speaking to other artists who have lost their way, using "sad, sordid stories" to gain attention, believing that "a lie is the best thing" or is she speaking to herself? Or has she experienced the same thing that I have, a lover sweeping the truth under the rug only to be exposed at a later time? More often than not, listeners are left with a meaning to which they can relate.

Not many artists are able to pull off such a feat.

As well, not many established artists are able to capture the same essence that initially transformed listeners into devoted fans. Those same established artists often use methods (i.e., sampling other artists's songs) to keep their fans enthralled. Tracy Chapman does not do this, instead, providing her listeners with new material on each album. "Telling Stories" is no different. The woman that we came to know and grew to love as the political, social and spiritual being is the same woman heard on this album. And although Chapman is often overlooked due to the genre in which her music falls into, folk-rock, do not be lead astray by this, for you will be sorely disappointed.

Though this album is a bit short and most of her music sounds the same, the lyrics and the easy-listening melodies more than compensate for the areas in which she lacks. In fact, I will go as far as to say that the monotony of her music is what keeps me interested. From the first track, "Telling Stories", to the last track, "First Try", Chapman provides enough memorable hooks to reel you in and keep you humming along with her. Such hits include "Telling Stories"; "Devotion"; "Paper And Ink", a political and social tune that warns listeners of greed; and "Unsung Psalm", a "if I..." approach towards our eternal soul.

For those of you who are extreme Chapman fans, you will be highly pleased after listening to this album. For those of you who may be newcomers, you will soon find yourself a Chapman fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Delight! .......2006-02-04

As a long term fan of Tracey Chapman's wonderful voice and great talent, I always buy her albums, but to my great delight the CD "Telling Stories" has become a dearly loved "Best Collection" of Tracey's.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tracy Album.......2005-08-26

This has to be the best album Tracy Chapman has ever released. I think she got over looked with this album. My favorite tracks are Devotion and Telling Stories. I really like the way she works the concept of the album. These stories let her fans get closer to her as an artist. Tracy Chapman is a true talent.

5 out of 5 stars One of my FAVs.......2005-05-05

If my darling husband, Norman, and me start kissing right when I put this CD in the player, we'll be.. uh.. very happy.. and .. er.. um, busy, by the time "Wedding Song" comes on. we love this CD soooooooooooooo much, it's fabulous kissing music. needless to say, I LOVE this music! (or did I say that already?) this is one of Tracy's best CDs. sometimes I could cry it's so beautiful. sniff.... really, no kidding, you've got to buy this and listen well. Tracy is truly a talent not recognized in the pop music world. maybe because she is way better than just "pop". although some of her stuff is played on the radio - not much is, and that's a dam shame. it is good.

2 out of 5 stars It's not bad...it's just boring........2004-09-01

I could find no other word to describe this album.
I love Tracy Chapman. I have most of her CDs. Her debut being her best album and one of the few albums I have from the 80's that still sounds fresh. And New Beginning was an amazing work with a blues touch that Tracy sounded comfortable with. And her newest release "Let it Rain" is definitely her most beautiful sounding album (in fact I'm listening to it now).
But this one is I guess anti-climatic (maybe because it was after the big success she had with "Give me one Reason"). I really didn't hear a standout track. Nothing really grabbed my attention as if saying, "Stop what you're doing! Your mind and ears are mine!" All of her albums are solid and full of talent but this album just seems so...ehh (sigh) compared to New Beginning and lackluster next to Let it Rain. If you're new to Tracy start with her Grammy winning debut "Tracy Chapman".

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video...........2002-10-13

I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....

And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07

As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.

It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.

If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.

5 out of 5 stars Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04

Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."

4 out of 5 stars Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18

I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05

This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

A great compilation and a good introduction to many of these Cape Verde artist, of which we have little or any awareness. A fantastic blend of African and Portugese influences, similar to Brazilian music. If you thought the David Byrne Brazilian compilations were good then you will love this CD. Great for parties too.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection of Afro-Portugese music........1998-08-29

This compilation album of Afro-Portugese music is wonderful. The songs are beautiful and hypnotic. Although I cannot understand the languages represented on this CD, the power of the music makes the language barrier irrelevant. I loved all of the songs, but "Mona Ki Ngi Xica" by Bonga, "Salale" by Vum Vum, and "Mama Africa" by Danny Silva were, for me, standout selections.

I have had this cd for three years and it is my favorite. The melodies are haunting yet very beautiful. The rhythms make you want to dance and the more you listen to it the more you will enjoy it. You can feel the country and the culture. Picture yourself on the beach somewhere with this music playing. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars eclectic but enchanting.......2000-09-05

a collection of African pop (?) that have the portuguese language as the common trait. pop is probably not a very good description in view of the variety of styles, from the salsa to cape verdien morna. Some of the songs are very forgettable, but some very haunting. I bought it for the first song in the CD by Bonga, which by itself is well worth the price. overall, it gives you a nice sampling of the great musical diversity of that part of Africa.

4 out of 5 stars good music.......2000-07-04

This is just a great cd. I can't say that any particular track stands out, because each track contributes something to the next. If you are a fan of world music or latin music I promise you will not be unsatisfied with this album . . .

5 out of 5 stars Moving and haunting tribute.......2005-01-03

Kristy wrote this song after the tragedy on 9/11.

Everytime i hear her tribute to all those lost souls, i am moved to tears.

The premise of this song is summed up by its title - a housewife kisses her hubby goodbye on his way to work, not knowing he would be both a victim and a hero not much later that day over a field near Philadelphia.

Kristy performs this song at many functions that raise funds for 9/11 charities. In fact, she donates some or all of the royalties derived from sales of the single to the same charities.

    Check out Kristy's other songs/albums - theyre a mix of country/pop/ballad/blues.
